@majestictortoise got an ask about recommendations for more Chinese shows for someone who enjoyed The Untamed, and opened the floor for more recommendations....
... My time has come.
I actually have a watch list here that's filterable by genre, as well as some other things (including my recommendations for those new to Chinese shows), but I wanted to pull out a couple of those that I think are good for people who are looking for something to watch after The Untamed, that might not be the first shows you'll hear about here on Tumblr.
If you like political intrigue, complicated characters, bromance, and women who can kick your ass (both metaphorically and literally)
THE SECRET OF THE THREE KINGDOMS
54 eps. Viki. Youtube.
199 CE. Yang Ping grew up alongside his foster-brother Sima Yi, unaware of the fact that he is the Emperor's identical twin brother. When the Emperor dies, Yang Ping is secretly placed on the throne in his brother's place. He quickly learns that his brother was emperor in name only, and spent his entire reign under the control of one warlord or another; currently he is under the thumb of the infamous and ingenious Cao Cao. But Yang Ping lacks the the viciousness and cunning that those closest to him think he needs to survive as the emperor, let alone unite a war-torn nation and revive a fading dynasty. Can Yang Ping survive the power-struggle and become an emperor in his own right while remaining true to his principles?
This is a (highly) fictionalized history of the fall of the Eastern Han and the start of the Three Kingdoms period.
It start off a little rough (I honestly almost dropped around episode 5), but I got pulled in and find this to be very bingeable and just a fun show with a cast of really interesting characters. While they all have knives at each others throats, no one is truly a villain- even those people who are traditionally seen as being 'bad guys' are given depth and complications. These are people living a terrible period of history, who have very different ideas of how to fix it.
Speaking of history, if you know nothing about this period you'll likely need to do a little bit of Wikipedia-ing if you want to really get the most out of the show. While I do think it's mostly accessible to someone who is going in without knowing what happens, I actually think the liberties taken with history are an interesting way to play with the historical characters and why they did what they did, and how they became who they were; it's constructed in such a way that it assumes you know what happens to these people, which often makes their early actions and statements ironic looking at you Cao Pi, my poor little meow meow I've actually been debating about making a simple guide to the characters, so if that's something you're interested in let me know.

Su Shangqing (voice of Meng Yao, Cao Weining, Tang Fan) voices several characters
I am almost positive Yang Ping is voiced by Jiang Guangtao (voice of Xie Lian, Sheng Lingyuan in Drowning Sorrows in Raging Fire, Chu Wanning in the Erha voiced manhua).
Tan Jianci (Cao Pi) is playing Gu Yun in Winner is King
Tse Kwanho (Cao Cao) is playing Xue Zhengyong in HYX/Immortality

If you like a drama queen of a main character who is willing to do (almost) anything for what starts off as a just cause, a great friendship that gets twisted as the show goes on, found family, and fantastic chemistry between the actors (not just the romances)
RISE OF PHOENIXES
70 episodes. Netflix.
Banished prince Ning Yi claws his way back to power and favor, methodically eviscerating all who stand in his way. All the while he's drawn to the independent and intelligent Feng Zhiwei who has disguised herself as a boy and become a trusted scholar to the Emperor. But will they survive the schemes and hurdles thrown their way?
If you've watched Nirvana in Fire, Ning Yi is the person that Mei Changsu thinks he is, while thinking that he's the person who Mei Changsu really is. Chen Kun is one of my favorite actors, and the role of the histrionic and morally complicated Ning Yi really shows off his strengths. He's also my fancast for Yan Wushi for what it's worth, and this show is my Powerpoint for why.
I will say that I think this show embodies both the good and bad things about pseudo-historical c-dramas, especially one of this length. I've already touched on the acting, but it's really fantastic from nearly all of the cast, and the actors are allowed to actually react to each other which is a lot of fun to watch. The design is also very cohesive- in addition to the costuming, the set dressing is also really well done with lots of nice details.
However I will say that generally this is a show that you need to turn your brain off and just watch when it comes to the plot. There's also some pacing issues, with important information being skipped over or seeming like entire scenes were jumped over... which might actually be the case because rumor has it this was originally 90 episodes (!) but they were told to cut it down.
I honestly recommend you end this show at episode 68. The ending of that episode is more satisfying than what the show gives you (which, spoiler, is a sad ending), and some of the story and plot issues of the later episode really snowball in the last two episodes, with characters acting really OOC and some pretty extreme ridiculousness.
But now that I've said all of that this show is incredibly bingeable and just a fun watch! And I can't understate how excellent the acting chemistry is.

If you like a main character who has a lot of growing up to do (and does it), brothers with a relationship that's #it's complicated, and a xianxia setting focusing on gods and monsters.
ASHES OF LOVE
Viki 60 eps; Netflix 63 eps
Jinmi- a carefree spirit who is unable to feel love- finds herself caught in the sibling rivalry between the two sons of the Heavenly Emperor, Fire Deity Xufeng and Night Deity Runyu.
A personal comfort show/guilty pleasure. This was also a super popular show in China when it aired. The more fantastical xianxia setting gives a lot of room for interesting costume and set design, and while there are some hard fails, there's a lot more that really works! Honestly though I think this show is as popular as it is because of the three leads- Deng Lun, Luo Yunxi and Yang Zi are all really good actors, and make this more than what could have been just another xianxia romance soap-opera of a show. All three of them grown and change, and end the show as completely different people.
I do want to say this show changes tone- it starts off almost as a romantic comedy with goofy elements before taking a much more serious turn in the later half.
If you can, watch this on Viki rather than Netflix because the subs are much better (I strenuously disagree with a lot of the choices, but I'll spare you my rant), and the Netflix version is the extended one which makes the show too long while not adding anything worthwhile, and actually messes up the ending of a pivotal episode, weirdly enough. EDIT: It appears the episode ending has been fixed! If you're curious, it was the ending of episode 45, which.... yeah kind of a major episode ending.
If you would like to join me in waiting-for-HYX/Immortality hell, this is made by the same production company, and Luo Yunxi (Chu Wanning) plays Runyu, and He Zhonghua (Nangong Liu) plays the Heavenly Emperor (if you've spent any time in the Erha/Dumb Husky tag you have almost certainly seen people using clips of Luo Yunxi in this show for Chu Wanning edits)

If you like a coming-of-age fantasy that's a sprawling heroes-journey type story, but with the twist that the seemingly chosen hero is more of an anti-hero
EVER NIGHT

Teenagers Ning Que and Sang Sang try to survive despite the odds stacked against them, while Ning Que attempts to avenge the massacre of his family. Meanwhile, a prophesied darkness has awakened, and the threat of a humanity-ending Eternal Night looms.
I love this show. I adore an amoral main character, as much as I love a character who does bad things for what they think are good reasons and this show has BOTH, AND sets them in contrast to each other!
I also love the design choices and the cinematography.
Be aware however that as far as I'm concerned, season 2 didn't happen (a lot of the actors didn't return - including lead Chen Feiyu - and it just has a lot of issues). I think season 1 ends by closing out a major plotline enough that it's satisfying in that regard. I like to say this is a show for people who can enjoy the journey rather than the destination, since there are still a lot of things left open.

JOY OF LIFE

Fan Xian was a modern guy who died and was reincarnated in ancient China. Since he's maintained all of his past life's knowledge, he plans to take advantage of his modern smarts and knowledge of classic poetry to live an easy life. However, larger forces have other plans for him, and they don't take kindly to the idea of someone who wants to control his own fate...
This is, hands down, one of the best c-dramas I have ever watched and it kills me that it's not more well-known. Everyone is fantastic and all of the characters are compelling (Haitang Duoduo, please marry me). It also has a twist to it that you will not see coming! I also want to give a special shout out to the actor who played young Fan Xian because he nails the adult actor's mannerisms and speech pattern (seriously, go back and watch the first ep again after you've seen further into the show, it's uncanny).
Heads up this ends on a cliff-hanger, and season 2 filming has been delayed for various reasons, but is supposedly starting in September. HOWEVER I think this show is more than worth watching without season 2 lined up because it's just so good. Also please don't read the Viki summary, it somehow manages to not be the show at all while also giving a major spoiler.

Outside of very specific scenarios, I find them underutilized in fandom. (also, the concentration of jc-bashing in newer fics on ao3 just keeps... rising. hey what the fuck. @ the responsible parties how does it feel to be history’s biggest cowards)
Honorable mention for Every dead wen and jiang that isn’t part of the ruling family, plus a particular shout-out to Wei Changze because canon characters also forget that he exists.

If meow meows are for making their own problems, plinko is for outside problems being inflicted upon them. Nie Mingjue and Jin Guangyao are both so good for this in such very different ways. They are such stinky bastard men. Jin Guangyao is god's perfect killing machine but can't stop anyone from picking him up and messing his hair. Usually does make half of his own problems but makes sure they're everyone else's problem too. Honestly, the less in-control of a situation he is, the better off his long-term happiness is likely to be. That he hates every second of it when it's ultimately good for him? Funnie.
Nie Mingjue, meanwhile, needs to be shrunk in the wash and felted in the dryer. Its character building,

Smaller, more structured cast! Let's see if this is more or less challenging than the vastness of DC/Batman.

...Lan Wangji. I don't know he's just compelling. He's a mood.

Wen Ning? Yeah. Wen Ning. Lan Zhan hit me like this initially and I still want to obnoxiously pinch his cheeks sometimes but he's just so much of a dick also.
Oddly not Sizhui much as I love him, I weirdly have too much respect and also the camerawork in The Untamed kept handling A-Yuan like a prop instead of a character and it squicked me out.

Oh this is harder, there aren't like. That many side characters allowed in mxtx's writing style, and everyone seems to have a little fandom of their own atm due to the high pitch the fandom's running at.
Jiang Yanli. She is criminally underrated, sometimes even by people who like her. I saw a fic the other day tagged 'make jiang yanli relatable' and I'm like maybe she's not to YOU. Maybe she's just not for you!
She's pretty thinly written in the novel but she's got a reasonable character core and her drama actress did great work! (Do not talk to me about animated Jiang Yanli pls.)
Particularly underrated is the part of her power move at Phoenix Mountain where she declares wwx is her little brother, and should be regarded as such wrt things like whether she needs a chaperone to be alone with him, because like. He's definitely never been formally adopted, so the only way for that to be literally true is if he actually was Jiang Fengmian's bastard.
So what she's doing there is drawing the line that her dead father's reputation is expendable if it will help protect and maintain her connection to her living foster-brother, which in that social context is bananas. This woman knows her own weaknesses intimately but she is fearless.

For reasons cited above this is literally impossible unless I want watch The Untamed enough times I memorize the extras' faces and pick a fave from amongst them, which admittedly I would if I did.
Maybe it'd be that guy who's sitting with Lan Qiren basically in his lap, after he goes down in the cursed objects saferoom trying to deal with the arm, because that guy is a real champ for watching Hanguang-Jun and this random flute maniac music together at the problem like that, and just rolling with it. I wonder how many scenes that guy would turn out to be in if I did. I wonder how many sects he belongs to lol.
But it's Ouyang Zizhen. He gets left out all the time, including from scenes he is definitely supposed to be in in the donghua, and I adore him.

Oh, it's Lan Xichen. He is very pathetic by the end of things and while his popularity in-universe is titanic he's got a lot of live human haters and people who hold him casually in contempt. As we know from the existence of the Oldest Sibling Cinematic Universe, he is my Jane Bennett and I love him.

My beautiful undead boy. A fierce corpse with social anxiety. The kindest person you’ll ever meet, loves his family and small animals, is routinely bullied by children, will help you hide a body if you ask nicely. I have no idea why he spoke to me so much, because I usually pick the most controversial and morally grey character I can find in a work of fiction, and this one is a 100% Good Boy, but here we are. He has a pretty impressive kill count for a cinnamon roll, though

He’s 15 and it shows. He has a dog! And a lot of issues! And an irrational desire to put himself in danger as often as possible! I want to pinch his cheeks.

Tbh that’s just Wen Ning again, because people don’t appreciate him enough, dammit. Yes he’s a 100% Good Boy, but he's also somewhere up there among the most tragic characters of the story, he's got depth, and his own motivations, and interesting conflict, and a lot of fun potential to explore. But he's too often overshadowed by other characters, and I think it's a shame.

He's a stoic henchman/bodyguard of one of the most annoying villains ever, and he's not being paid enough. A shining example of malicious compliance. An icon. I'm not even mad at him for all the murders.

Jin Guangyao!
Look at him. What a polite and trustworthy young man. He has cute dimples. You can fit him in your pocket. He's a customer service employee who's being yelled at by Karens every day of his life, and that's his villain origin story. Personally, I think he gets the prize for being the character with The Most Fucked Up Life in this novel, and I allow him to do some mass murder about it.

Jiang Cheng. It's always open season on Jiang Cheng.
*slaps Jiang Cheng on the ass* This bad boy can fit so many insecurities, parent issues and unprocessed trauma in him. He has the most epic entrance in the entire series, and 5 minutes later he's crying uncontrollably on the floor, because he's shocked and upset that his brother cared about him. He's a mess. He’s the most controversial character in this fandom, I’ve never seen a person who’s normal about him. He’s legally banned from dating despite being rich & hot, because no one wants to deal with All That. He's so fun to bully. What a guy.

Most fake dead cat ever. Also, if it was dead, why did it meow on the way down?
Debating whether I should spend time actually looking this up, but even if that is how they make that particular dish, that rice must be super crunchy. Five minutes of cooking (without even starting with hot water) is not enough to soften rice.
Okay, now we get into the horror part of the story. I like how spooky they made this part.
I can’t help but get Scooby Doo vibes out of this part. All the kids trying to solve the mystery. And poor Wei Wuxian having to babysit them.
It’s so cute to see them all offer their own blood for Wei Wuxian to use in a summoning charm. It shows how quickly they’ve all come to depend on and trust him. It’s less surprising for the Lan juniors, but for the others, as well as Jin Ling, to offer their blood really shows that they have come to trust Wei Wuxian with their lives. Maybe it’s because he’s the only adult around, maybe it’s because he saved them from poisoning—either way, it’s obvious that he has earned their trust in a very short amount of time.
I think this is the first time we actually see someone take out an object that has been magicked into a pouch or sleeve, so thank you, Lan Sizhui. I think the only other person who does this is Lan Wangji, and his guqin just seems to appear out of thin air when he waves his arm a certain way. So, it’s a little detail to show Lan Sizhui opening the pouch, but it helps understand that they aren’t, in fact, magicians.
Jin Ling telling Lan Sizhui that he must be wrong is funny, because for one, what does Jin Ling even know about spirit association, and two, this kid grew up under Lan Wangji’s guidance. Look, all he needs to say is, “I learned from Hanguang-Jun, and he is never wrong, therefore I am never wrong.”
Agreed. Enough of your villain monologuing, and let’s just get on with it.
Commentary in this episode will be sparse. But I do want to talk about Xue Yang a bit. I like how overtly evil he is and how committed to being a villain he is. “If I say I’m going to kill the entire clan, I will. I won’t even leave a dog behind.” Yes, it’s all well and good that he’s just that bad, folks. I just get bored with him. And this whole side story that’s largely irrelevant to the plot that’s coming up. I just find that I don’t really care much about any of the characters, except for A-Qing.
I like this little conversation. Wei Wuxian first says Wen Ning is going to win the zombie fight—he has absolute confidence in this fact that he even scoffs to Xue Yang. And then he defends Wen Ning, saying that Wen Ning is not a thing. He isn’t just that dagger, a tool for other people. To Wei Wuxian, he’s a person, an ally, a friend. We saw this in the last episode, and we see it again here, reiterating that Wen Ning is an equal.
This is super cute: the place Wei Wuxian is needed is here, with the juniors. Despite what he’s done—or maybe because of what he’s done, he’s actually in a very good position to teach them. He’s learned so much, and a lot of times, it was the hard way, that it makes him the perfect teacher and guide for them.
“So you think Hanguang-Jun is not good?”
Haha, I love this little exchange. And Wei Wuxian, who has this weird little giggly moment where he affirms that Hanguang-Jun is very good, the best, even. I think it’s clear that “good” doesn’t really cover what Wei Wuxian thinks of Lan Wangji.
Wow, that was short! Um, I think I’m going to skip the Empathy section, because I don’t really see the point of watching it. I vowed to watch it at some point, and I already did, because I watched it with my friend. Oath fulfilled.

hello anon! so you might just be making fun of me with this ask bc I know i do nothing but talk about cats however I am taking it seriously so if that is not what you wanted please look away now!
to recap: lan xichen = orange boy cat
also disclaimer - we do not do cat breeds here. no sir. we also discourage you from reading too much into cat stereotypes. all cats are individuals it is really not much to do with their colour or gender. also we do not know why we are referring to myself as we, but that's just how it is now. blah blah blah.
as for the rest :
lan wangji = big tortoiseshell energy. I know that they are only female but I think honestly that is just very gender of him. so he's like one of those really puddingy tortoiseshell cats, will whack u if u pet him wrong, will curl up on ur lap and be the warmest ball of fluff if u Behave
wei wuxian = not to be predictable but he's a black cat. one of those that has silly time every night at 3am. sometimes he disappears for three days at a time but he always shows back up when u least expect it, covered in mud and sometimes with his ear split
jiang cheng = let's be honest he's probably grey. like a really sleek grey cat that u would see on a cat food advert. despite his appearance he will hiss and growl at Anything That Moves. he has his people that are His People and the rest should Stay Away Or Get Scratched.
jiang yanli = old lady tabby cat. she probably has no teeth but is the gentlest little cat you ever have met. instantly your friend, and will chirp at you because You Are Her Kitten Now
nie huaisang = okay. so. one time I met this cat that was like. super pretty, white cat, blue eyes, lil bit fluffy, you know the type. shoulda been called duchess except i think her name was sapphire but yknow. everyone who met her was like oh she's the most gorgeous cat I've ever met! and they were WRONG. she was purely evil, literally a demon. her meow sounded like metal screeching. she did not know what a litter tray was. she was plotting my death. and no, she never even scratched me. but I bet that when I hit my head on the door on the way out that was her fault. so that's nie huaisang.
nie mingjue = big Big street cat with the cheekies, been straying for years, probably doesn't have a full tail or his ears intact, his nose is all scritchy scratchy. HOWEVER. once you gain his trust it is over for you hoes. he will literally fall over onto you and rest his entire weight on you for affection. a good boy.
jin guangyao = I don't know but he has really big ears. probably a silver tabby. always squinting at u, and yes that means cat friendship. but u have a sneaking suspicion he has gone beyond cat body language
jin zixuan = fluffy tabby cat. insists that you brush him three times a day at precise hours. probably has a fainting couch and glass dishes like that tumblr cat, you know the one.
wen qing = again I'm not sure about colour, maybe another grey cat. she doesn't care about you and she wants you to know it. however, if you are sad, she will mysteriously appear in the same room as you. but it was an accident.
wen ning = a kitten. very stupid and will fall over himself trying to get attention. like when u scratch at the base of his tail he will stand up so high that he goes head over heels.
xue yang = like a version of Wei wuxian except that he's Actually Feral and his whiskers are all missing and he's the scruffiest cat you ever did see. but he Wants that tuna and you Will give it to him.
xiao xingchen = another orange boy cat, but a very fluffy one with white paws and chest. knows he is pretty and would like belly rubs about it please and thank u
song lan = i am running out of cats at this point. probably another grey one though. no touchy.
