I love that Goncharov is getting more publicity since it's really underrated, but with some of the posts I really wanna shake the fandom. Like, why can't you leave my girls alone?
Goncharov/Katya shippers act like Sofia is this evil seductress who drives a wedge between them (when really it's Goncharov driving a wedge between Goncharov and Katya), while Gonchadrey shipper will be like "oh, if it weren't for Katya, Andrey and Goncharov could just be happy together". As if the whole point of the movie isn't that Honcharov and Andrey never could have been together anyways because of the society they live in. Even if Katya weren't there, Goncharov would have married someone and it all would have ended the same way. It's inevitable.
It's as if they haven't watched the movie, but either way they for sure haven't understood it's themes

I keep seeing people get sooo worked up about whether or not Katya was either a perfect soul mate for Goncharov or wildly manipulative and evil to the core. First of all, the two are not mutually exclusive (though I don't personally think Katya was Evil™️ within the context of the narrative). Like, Katya was a bitch *and also* supportive in the synchronized, semi-adversarial way that Goncharov needed. If you remove Katya from the narrative you don't suddenly get a happy romance between Goncharov and Andrey, you get Goncharov and Andrey with no outside influence to help them understand each other beyond their broad stroke differences! And that isn't even taking into account the ways that her personal character arc was integral to the undercurrent of desperate, and sometimes ill-conceived, attempts at harm reduction in times of senseless violence.
Also I hope you all know that Scorsese is probably giddy as hell that people are responding to Katya with the same vitriolic and opposite interpretations that people have about Lady Macbeth lol. Like literally he must be so fucking pleased with himself.

if you’re mad about shipping goncharov with andrey you should also be mad about katya’s characterization
