no i could write an essay on goemon he's the most character of all time. he constantly fucks off to do his own thing and works w the lupgang bc the pay is good. he's deeply connected to his ancestry and their ceremonies to the point of being shackled by them. he's a sword for hire he's a thief he's a massive bitch he has never hesitated when given the chance to kill lupin. he went into a dissociative fugue for 3 days then killed 14 people. he blushes if a woman looks at him for too long. he rides a moped. he's like 30 and his voice still cracks. he thinks sandwiches are the peak of foreign cuisine.

Warning for discussion on abuse
I think it is important to discuss the effects Momochi's abuse has had on Goemon's characterization, as I feel people are too quick to point to Goemon and blame him for certain ingrained mannerisms, and that Part 1 overall has an unspoken theme of healing from trauma. This may be long, but I feel it is substantially important to bring awareness to.
Something of note is that it is not made clear why exactly Goemon is with Momochi in the first place; after all, shouldn't he be training under his father? However, another thing of note is that there is no mention of Goemon Ishikawa XII at all within the series. The manga's continuity and Part 1 overlap in some areas, and Manga Goemon is the last living member of his bloodline. It is entirely possible that Momochi has raised Goemon for much of his life, and that Goemon has had to tolerate years of abuse.
Tumblr media
Within this scene, Momochi prompts a fight with Goemon. He attacks Goemon in the dark, and Goemon defends himself, unaware of who the intruder is. This also raises the question of whether Momochi is physically abusive as well, as he felt the need to physically fight Goemon for no good reason.
Tumblr media
Upon realizing that he was fighting Momochi, Goemon takes responsibility for both his and Momochi's actions, and refers to himself as insolent while begging for forgiveness.
Tumblr media
Momochi immediately lashes out at Goemon, and insults both his appearance and his "failure" at assassinating Lupin, and deems Goemon as hopeless despite the effort and years Goemon has put in to develop his skill.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Momochi once again mocks Goemon, despite Goemon's promise to make things right for Momochi's sake.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Momochi cuts Goemon off mid-sentence, and further belittles him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Momochi yells at Goemon to "shut up," claims that Goemon is lying when he is in fact telling the truth, and destroys an object which brings Goemon joy. Momochi also interferes with Goemon and Fujiko's relationship (with it being stated that Goemon must bring Fujiko over for only a few hours a day, when Momochi is not present), despite Goemon being an adult.
Goemon has likely never been shown love in his life until meeting Fujiko (who was using him), and has likely never been shown true love until meeting Lupin. It is no surprise that Goemon is in turn cold and attempts to shut out the world; his behavior and stoic demeanor most likely serves as a defense mechanism, so that he cannot be hurt again. His stoicism may also derive from Momochi punishing him for having emotion and being anything other than a samurai, which may also be why Goemon struggles with identity aside from his purpose, perfectionism, and maintaining a degree of seriousness.
Tumblr media
Interesting how Goemon only begins to smile once Momochi is gone and he finds friends who appreciate and love him for who he is

Acquired Children, part 1
His superior officer hands him a file, a case he should be able to handle on his own, according to the older officer. Zenigata is used to doing the jobs that had less risk and that the other officers just didn't want to deal with because he's fresh out of training and barely 20 years old. He isn't sure about what to make of this case though.
It seemed simple at first, just four kids that needed to be processed and put into foster homes, but the issue comes in when he reads where they'd gotten these kids.
Case 361: Arsène Lupin arrested, grandson (4) in police care. Child will not give more information than his age and refuses to give his name. No known surviving family members.
Case 365: Unknown gangster taken into custody, left son (6) in police care. No known family.
Case 367: Ishikawa Goemon XII, found beheaded in Okigahara forest. 6 month old son found bundled in nearby tent. No know relatives.
Case 368: Shiemi Mine, local prostitute, found shot dead in alleyway with toddler girl (2) crying over the corpse. No known family.
The report was giving Zenigata chills, three of these were criminals and children of criminals were often messed up from the start. These kids were apparently locked in one of the backrooms in the station because the 4yo keeps stealing random things off cops, the 2yo keeps yelling for the slightest thing and the 6yo has already outshot most of the rookies in the firing range in the basement.
Zenigata, albeit unnerved, followed the procedure as usual. He called all the local foster homes and any places that usually took children that were left at the police station, but every time when they heard who the parents were, they'd either immediately decline, start preaching about demons or just end the call abruptly in his ear.
By the time his shift was ending, Zenigata had made no progress on it and they needed a place to stay overnight.
*****
After reporting to his superior officer and getting a thorough lecture on responsibility and that if there's no one else then an officer has to take the kids for the night. Again, none of the other officers wanted to deal with the kids.
So, Zenigata made his way down to the backroom where they were locked in for the last couple hours. He needed to at least meet them if he was temporarily responsible for them.
To his surprise, the door wasn't locked as the other officers had said it would be. Even more surprising, was that all four of them were still in the room. One of the boys, his guess was the 6yo, was busy trying to get the 6 month old to eat some crumbled up granola bars. There was a couple wrappers and soda cans laying around and Zenigata found himself surprised because as far as he knew they hadn't exactly been left with snacks, not this much anyway.
When the kids noticed him, the girl ran over and hid behind the smaller boy, who was standing now and offering Zenigata a grin. The other boy didn't pay him much attention, still trying to deal with the baby.
Zeni wonders if they've already bonded or if the girl just hid by them because they're older. He'd have to find out later.
"You four are gonna stay with me tonight," he says kindly, trying to be as gentle and non-threatening as possible. This didn't seem to work though, because the girl moved further away, the older boy turned to shield the smallest from the cop and the boy that had been smiling, now crossed his arms. "Not happening! You're a cop, why should we trust you?" Seems he was gonna be the talkative one then. It was odd to him that the four, so young, already had a distrust for police.
It takes a while to convince the four he's not going to hurt them and then he's got the problem of getting four kids to his flat. The walk, which thankfully wasn't more than two blocks, started with the baby held in his arms, fast asleep, Fujiko on his shoulders, patting his head with his hat on her head and the two boys holding onto his belt loops, both refusing to hold his hand for whatever reason.
Five minutes passed with this relative peace, when Lupin gets distracted by a guy wearing a Rolex and Zenigata has to corrale him away from the stranger, only to find he has the watch anyway. Then the assumed Goemon woke up, took one look at Zenigata and started screaming. For the life of him, Zeni cannot figure out how to calm him down and soon Jigen has the baby and is somehow soothing him better than Zeni ever would have been able to. This lead to Lupin having one hand to Zeni's belt loop and the other one clinging to Jigen's coat to make sure the other two boys didn't get lost.
Thankfully they made it to the apartment without further issue, but then Zeni has to figure out what the hell he's gonna do with four kids in a flat that isn't even big enough for himself, let alone other people as well.
While Zenigata is still figuring out if he needs to give them food or a bath or where he's gonna let the four sleep, he gets stopped in his tracks.
The four kids had piled up on the couch with Jigen at the bottom, Goemon resting on his chest and Fujiko and Lupin on either side of him, leaning against the older boy.
This gives Zeni a moment to sit down on the armchair and think through what he just agreed to. It would be just one night, but if they can't get a foster home or track any relatives then he'll have to take them for another day and another day and another day.
He can't afford that on his salary, but maybe if they stay for longer than a week then he can convince his superior officers to either fund their expenses or give him a raise because hell knows he can't raise three kids and a baby this way.
He decided to think it over with a shower and since they were still asleep when he was done, he tried to get some sleep as well.

Rises the Moon
Tumblr media
Pairing: Platonic! Goemon Ishikawa XII x Reader
Genre: Fluff.
Summary: Based on "Rises The Moon" by Liana Flores; everything that could go wrong in the heist goes extremely wrong, and Goemon and the reader have to wait together until the rain stops to go back with the gang.
Words: 2k
TW: Some strong language. It's possible that Goemons and the reader pronouns got mixed on the translator, so notify me if that happens!
Enjoy! 💕

Shit.
Shit, shit, shit.
Y / N didn't know at what dammed moment the gang had separated, but between the rain, the fiat (which did not start), and Pops dispersing his group to search for the 4 thieves on the run, there was no other choice but to get away to distract them , and meet back when everything stopped; God, Lupin is a real jerk.
"Nothing will happen!" He said. "Surely everything will go well, we have to take the treasure and leave" he said. "Come on guys, it's nothing we haven't done before," he said. And he convinced them. So he was not the only stupid one, if not that the rest agreed to go out with the incessant rain and knowing that the place that surrounded the gloomy mansion was pure vegetation.
The fugitive, in her hurried journey through the thick forest and trying to escape from a policeman, who shot her while screaming to her to slow down, wanted to lose sight of him while crossing the bushes. Another bad decision of the night.
Yes, she managed to dodge it, at the expense of bending her ankle wanting to dodge some branches and tripping over a root. With great difficulty and suppressing groans of pain, she hid behind a tree and waited for the light of the flashlight to fade further from the place. She repeated herself a thousand times with the intention of distracting herself that "Lupin is stupid," knowing deep down that it was her responsibility as well. But what else can you expect from her in that situation? They had the tiara secured and did not even break the glass in the cabinet, since as soon as Lupin touched it, the alarm system was activated. After that, her memories were clouded in the chaos that was to escape, especially when the police, neither slow nor short, were already leaning at the door of the house. In those moments she justified back to herself how she hated that Lupin announced his thefts, although if everything had gone well, she would surely have forgiven him. She sighed tiredly, while she felt the dew that fell from the leaves of the tree wetting her features, and the smell of wet grass filled her nose to the point of being unbearable. If she hadn't been in the situation she was in, she might have enjoyed it.
She took her cell phone out of her pants, but as if life had decided to make it out of nowhere, it wouldn't turn on. Frustrated, she angrily threw it into nothingness. Or almost to nothing, since she heard a little "Ow!", Along with something falling off. She prepared to unsheathe the weapon in case her luck was at its height that night. However, the target she hit with the plastic rubble cut through the bushes before she had time to even take it. She would recognize that fine cut anywhere, and she sighed gratefully that she had hit Goemon.
Damn, she hit Goemon.
The slim man emerged from the leaves silently, as he readjusted his rain hat (nicknamed “the bowl” by Jigen), and he looked at her as seriously as he used to. They both looked at each other without knowing what to say. It was past all that evening that simply saying "I'm sorry" in that exact moment wouldn't fix all the embarrassment they experienced that night.
Goemon simply gave her the cell phone and held out his hand so they could go back together with the rest. Y / N shook her head, "I twisted my ankle," she added, then outlining a weak smile. "If you help me we will risk both of us falling together, the mud is getting more and more slippery and I don't think I'm ready to take any more miscalculations tonight."
The samurai sat next to her, confusing the girl. “In that case, let's wait for the rain to stop. When there is a little more light we will meet with Lupin and Jigen ” he explained. And she couldn't complain, at least she wouldn't hang out alone, no matter how quiet she was in the company of the reserved Goemon.
. . .
A while passed, and the rain seemed to be getting stronger, along with the cold of the night. She was shivering, being soaked from head to toe, the coat that she had on top of her was insufficient to give her little comfort, and the pain in her ankle seemed to give her no rest; surely Lupin and Jigen were already back at the hideout, and if they were, she was prepared to take her anger out on them. Goemon, on the other hand, seemed unfazed by the temperature, or at least he was good at hiding it. And Y / N envied the peace he was in at the time, and needing to mentally escape her horrible state, she decided to start talking to the samurai, or at least trying.
"Hey, sorry about the hit."
Nothing. No response. She wouldn't give up so easily either.
"I was frustrated with everything that went wrong tonight ... and when it didn't turn on, it was the last straw for me" she said, smiling a little. He only responded with "okay, don't worry", no more and no less.
"It got so cold, don't you think?"
Goemon opened his eyes, and not at all subtle he saw out of the corner of his eye the shrunken figure of his partner, shaking her body slightly and listening to the grinding of her teeth at the low temperature. Surprisingly for her, he extended his arm a little, as if inviting her to approach him, no matter how uncomfortable it was to the Japanese. Without hesitation, Y / N leaned close to his side, resting her tired head on her partner's shoulder. Goemon's cheeks were slightly flushed, from the simple fact that they didn't have the same confidence compared to that between her and the rest of the gang. It certainly felt weird, but he wasn't hard enough to leave her like this.
"Thanks".
"You're welcome".
And silence again.
Y / N tried to rest her eyes, now with a closer heat source, no matter how minimal. She relaxed her body as much as circumstance allowed, knowing that Zenigata or someone might find them at some point; if it came to arresting them, there was no storm to stop old Pops, and even if she tried to disperse at times it was impossible. She wished to have Goemon's peace of mind that, as much as his meditation position was adulterated by her, he remained immobile and in serenity with the situation around them. The minutes passed, and they passed, and when she guessed that much more than an hour had passed, she was truly exhausted.
This time she felt bad interrupting him, but seeing that the storm was advancing, and the moonlight did not permeate between the stormy clouds as if to try to entertain herself with it, she gently touched the samurai's hand that rested on her arm.
"Goemon."
"Hmm?"
"Do you have your cell phone here?"
"Is it for calling Lupin?"
“No, the signal does not reach here. It's to put some music on, I need to dissipate myself from this, even for a few moments. "
Goemon hesitated a bit at first, but ended up giving her his phone anyway; it wasn't like he knew how to use it properly. Y / N mumbled a thank you, to which he only responded again with a "hmm" and returned in a few seconds to his meditation. She doubted that the device actually had any songs on it, but to her surprise, there were some music files, scarce but available. She sighed relaxed, searching for something that interested her.
Until she found a song that made her smile, and raising the volume of the device a little, enough to be able to listen without being discovered, she hit play. It did not take long for her to murmur the lyrics under her breath; while she was a little more meek, she settled more in the figure next to her, took a deep breath, and closed her eyes with a smile.
It was one of the many songs that her mother sang to her when she was a little girl, and remembering the moments of her childhood when the voice of her mother cradled her to sleep, she was finally able to relax and induce the sleep that she had wanted so much.
When Goemon felt more of her weight fall on him, he looked at her calmly, taking a deep breath and grateful that she could not see his discomfort, as he paid attention to the song that Y / N had put on. It was one of the few songs that gave him a positive feeling, outside of the traditional Enka that he used to listen to. he had asked Lupin to download it to his cell phone, and after laughing a little in his face for his taste in music once more, the thief agreed. Internally, and although he would not admit it, Goemon sensed a certain warmth in hearing of someone who shared his musical preference.
And as a coincidence worthy of a story, while Rises The Moon sounded in the background, very slowly the clouds stopped crying, making way for the moon itself, illuminating the poor thieves.
. . .
The morning lightning, along with a violent jolt to her shoulder, woke the exhausted Y / N. She couldn't wait to get to the hideout and take a well deserved bath.
"HEY, COME ON, WAKE UP" Lupin exclaimed as he shook his partner once more, causing Goemon to move too, like a chain reaction.
They both opened their eyes irritated. Would it take so much to not be so intense all the time?
"How are the lovebirds doing?" the suited thief commented with a wide smile, just as disheveled as they were. Lovebirds? He must be fucking kidding.
"Where the hell were you? Tell me you came back to the apartment so I have the perfect excuse to yell at you ”Y / N grumbled.
"Wow, calm down. Jigen and I didn't have the best of nights either, not to say it was as chaotic as yours, ”and he wasn't lying: they spent all night waiting for Zenigata to disappear from sight long enough to get close to the Fiat. and that happened in the morning, just when the sun's rays began to come out and the police convoy could be seen moving away from the place. They were grateful for hiding the car in the vegetation the night before, enough not to arouse suspicion. “We barely managed to start the car and finding you two was not easy, so hurry up. Jigen is waiting for us ”.
The girl looked him up and down, and releasing a yawn, she barely got up, complaining of the pain in her ankle still injured. Goemon got up seconds later, and offered her his arm again to help her walk to the Fiat, while Lupin looked sideways at the scene, and asked how they had spent the night while walking as fast as possible in case Pops came back.
And because everyone needed a bath, mainly because of that.
. . .
The Fiat was going slow but sure on the road: it was obvious that if they pushed it a little harder any effort made to get it going again would be in vain. At that rate they had an hour's drive to the hiding place, and even Lupin was not speaking, perhaps the miracle that the rest needed after the incidents suffered. The interior was silent for a while, until Jigen reached for something in his pocket and offered it to Goemon, it was his cell phone. Lupin smiled slightly, and waited for the reaction of both passengers in the back seat.
Goemon, flushed and embarrassed, lightly touched Y / N's shoulder and asked in a low voice how to change the device's wallpaper. Surprised, she took the cell phone and frowned when she saw that Lupin had taken a selfie with the two of them hugging and asleep in the background.
God, he was a real jerk.

I think in part 2, Goemon mentions a grandmother who saved his live with that earthworm broth he tried to make for Funiko, but other than that I don't know how you think his relationship with the rest of his birth family would be.
Part 2 lore is weird, sometimes Goemon says "ooh, a letter, I wonder if it's from mother" but simultaneously says "my dearly departed mother" (I believe the line about his mother being dead came first). With that being said, I have been meaning to get into Goemon's family lore.
Tumblr media
In Part 1, Goemon studies under Momochi. However, I have always found this unusual considering that Goemon is meant to be the 13th of a long line of samurai. Wouldn't he just train under Goemon Ishikawa the 12th?
I don't know if Goemon was sent to some samurai summer camp or something, but Momochi seems to take a near-parental role in Goemon's life. Goemon has apparently studied under him for years, and Goemon doesn't seem that old to me. I headcanon him to be about 18 judging by how he talks and how he obeys Momochi; and, in the manga chapters Part 1 is based on, Goemon is 17.
Tumblr media
Speaking of the manga, I believe that it was never initially stated that Goemon was the 13th of his family (though I may be wrong). I also believe that it was stated that his entire family is dead, explaining why he was so angry his uncle was murdered in "Saint Goemon."
Tumblr media
It's possible that his extended family is alive in the anime, but that possibly his immediate family is dead.
Tumblr media
I'm going to get into my Pilot Film rambles because I think it had so much potential, so this may be long. Also consider that much of what I have to say is not necessarily fact, but what I think would have been interesting.
I think the phrasing of Goemon's introduction is unique:
"This is Goemon Ishikawa in the 13th generation."
It almost makes it seem as if Goemon has gradually changed with the times, or is the first break in a long lineage of tradition and heritage (I prefer to go with the latter). I personally believe that Goemon comes from a long line of exclusively Japanese Goemen, only to be the first break in this tradition with his race. With this, I'd imagine there would be some conflict.
Tumblr media
I still don't believe that Goemon Ishikawa XII or his mother would still be around, so instead he'd be close to his extended family. I think his race would in part lead him to become a sort of "black sheep" in the family (I need to make it clear that I do not believe that first generation mixed-race people are bound to be hated by their extended family, I speak only from experience and the types of things I would like to see represented).
I think that his extended family/master(s) wouldn't like the other half of his heritage (once again, not an absolute, but at the same time he comes from a family that values heritage so much that they've kept the same name for 13 generations). He's also mentioned in the Pilot Film to be lonely and the creator of his sword technique, which leads me to believe that he's had to fend for himself for a while.
Tumblr media
If he were to have a character arc, I could totally see it be about him overcoming his internalized racism and realizing that he has more in common with Lupin (who also has mixed heritage) than anyone else. I could see him at first being a misunderstood villain trying to obsessively prove his worth to his family, who will never appreciate him the way they should, only to then realize that he doesn't need to prove or change himself for anybody.
Tumblr media
In the manga he definitely had mean masters, so I could see this carrying over to the anime. In "A Day Without Killing," Goemon tries his best to kill Lupin but fails, upsetting his cruel masters who verbally abuse him and kill his pet, only to leave this environment and join forces with Lupin. I could see this happen in the anime but with a bit of a racial focus, with Goemon leaving his bigoted family/community to join a group of people who actually love him for who he is.
Once again, the Pilot Film could have simply been "look at him cut things," these writings are just what I would like to see.

In which a young Zenigata (20) gets put in charge of the Lupgang as kids/toddlers (6m; 2y; 4y; 6y)
Tumblr media
Arsene Lupin the first caught and jailed, grandson (4) left in the care of police, no known family to take him in.
Nameless mobster arrested after violent turf war, son (6) left in police care, no known family.
Shiemi Mine, prostitute found dead in a ditch with toddler girl next to her, girl (2) in police care. No known father or family.
Ishikawa Goemon XII, stabbed to death in forest, found with baby (6m) that is now in police care.
Zenigata (20) is a new cop in the Tokyo police department and he gets settled with the run of the mill jobs the other cops don't really wanna do. One of which, is deciding what to do with a bunch of kids who are in police care after their guardians were either arrested or killed.
He ends up being responsible for these kids and now he's crammed four kids and himself into a too small apartment on a salary that barely covers his own needs, much less those of four children.
Jigen takes to Lupin very quickly and becomes a sort of protective older brother figure for the tiny thief.
Goemon also likes to be held by Jigen but will fuss if Zenigata has him for too long.
Fujiko just wants to dress up and be treated like a princess, to which Lupin obliges.
