So I was gushing at @skadren and @takenbynumbers about this earlier, but I wanna share it here too because I think I'm right. I think I have patched one of the biggest characterization holes in Crisis Core, and the result is both horrible and entirely on-brand.
I don't think Gillian ever left Project G.
In Crisis Core, we find out that Hollander was apparently supposed to be the lead on the Science Department's handling of SOLDIER, but Hojo somehow stole it out from under him. We never find out how, but the important thing here is that—in spite of Gast calling Project G a failure in the late '70s—Hollander was still respected enough in the company to be in the running to head up his department.
After Project G was deemed a failure, it's implied that Hollander and Gillian independently made Angeal, to try to prove that they were right. I think most of the fandom has just always kind of assumed Gillian caught feelings because she was the one actually carrying the baby this time, and that's when and why she bailed.
But…she didn't bail.
Gillian stayed in Banora, the original research site for her project. She stayed in contact with Shinra. And, most egregious of all, she encouraged Angeal to join SOLDIER. She and her husband were so proud of him for enlisting that her husband literally worked himself to death to buy Angeal better equipment than his peers. You don't do something like that if you don't dramatically approve of what's going on.
What if the real reason that Gillian never accepted hush money from Shinra had nothing to do with her (horribly sanctimonious) concept of honor, or even her wounded pride, but because she believed that Project G would still come to fruition when Angeal was old enough? What if she didn't take hush money because she didn't want Shinra to be able to hold the bribe over her head when, eventually, she came back to the company fully vindicated?
She's the only one of the original four junior researchers that wasn't moved to Project 0 by Gast after the Jenova Project wound down. Hollander was there, Hojo was there, Lucy was even there, but Gillian wasn't. Gillian stayed in Banora, and she brought Angeal up, and then she sent him back to Shinra.
I think she knew how Gast played, and she intended to beat him—by being patient, because Gast wasn't. It was his greatest weakness as a scientist. He refused to ever wait and see how things developed; the moment he got a single piece of new information he jumped on it, even if it meant abandoning all his prior efforts and leaving his junior researchers to clean up after him.
If she was so against what she'd done with Shinra, why did she encourage Angeal to enlist? It makes no sense with the context we're directly presented in the game and in some of the newer meta, but it does make sense if she encouraged it because she wanted him sent back to Hollander for testing. It makes sense if she knew that war was the best time to prove that she and Hollander had made something they could be proud of, something worth the company's time.
Hollander was in the running to head up the department. He'd done something to garner so much approval from Shinra that he was almost given charge of the department he'd been working in as a junior researcher for decades. Angeal enlisted at some point in the decade prior to the events of Crisis Core, and Genesis was initially the one sent to Tamblin to end the war.
But Genesis defected. Project G didn't end the war. Hojo was given the lead position, and Hollander literally ran away, going into hiding while still desperately trying to prove his project a success by whatever means necessary.
He never stopped working on the project that had been declared a failure over twenty years prior, why would the project's namesake?
This would also explain why Gillian refused to help Genesis—he was the subject that got her project deemed a failure. Possibly twice, if the above events are accurate. She already knew that, at least scientifically, Genesis wasn't worth the effort.
This concept, to me, makes Gillian finally make sense. She only kills herself after Angeal chooses a side, and it's not the side that will lead him back to Shinra. She kills herself when there's no way that she'll ever be able to capitalize on the success of her project. She kills herself when her patience proves to have been for nothing.
I don't think Gillian ever left Project G.

For the ask game 4, 8, 12, 18 and 25 for any fandom
This is part of this ask game :3 Mostly seven with some general and one intentionally unspecified fandom
4) What was the last straw for finally blocking that annoying person?
I’m very bad at actually blocking people, I tend to cause my own problems that way, but the last time I blocked someone it was because they sent me an unsolicited DM basically trying to guilt me into commissioning them right after an artist I’d just recently commissioned posted the piece. I love getting DM’s and interaction in general even if I’m not super active myself because of anxiety so I was really upset about it when I saw the message.
On one hand I get it, I do- I’m also a commercial artist and I’m lucky enough to have a decently stable W2 Job right now. On the other hand though: maybe make your sales pitch at least more enticing than a Jehovah's Witness knocking on your door.
8) Common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about?
This one got WELL out of hand length wise so I'll be posting my full thoughts on why later today or tomorrow.
The apple game in CC (from the Silver Elite fan club letter) is bs, and it baffles me that people trust what Hojo says as much as they do.
Honestly, most of the fan mail in the game is bs or has the truth heavily muddied but this example is especially egregious in my opinion. It's not an activity that Genesis, Angeal, or Sephiroth would actually enjoy much. Sephiroth himself would be bored to tears since he has such an unfair advantage since his sword is much slimmer than Rapier and Angeal's standard issue broadsword. There is also the issue of the fact that all of them likely have some element of food trauma (or in Angeal's case are confirmed as such) but the expanded post later today will expand on that.
Disclaimer that you can enjoy and write what you want or believe in the story of AGS playing with apples and swords. Make content you feel inspired to, consume content you enjoy, and don’t let me stop you from having fun.
12) The unpopular character that you actually like and why more people should like them
I don’t know how unpopular he is anymore but Denzel is great- if you can find the ‘on the way to a smile’ anthology and read ‘episode Denzel’ or the OVA from 2010 his character gets a lot better. He’s a complex little guy with layers and plenty of regret already trying to go forward with life. Post AC he starts working with Reeve as a protege of sorts iirc after Reeve blocks him from joining the WRO’s militia. (Which would not have gone over well with anyone if it went through, Denzel is 10ish at that point.)
He wants to save people like Cloud saved him, somewhat so he can feel worthy of having been saved. There is also still a lingering of the unintentional toxic positivity his mom instilled in him and it is delightful.
The book mentioned above was finally released in English around a decade after Japan got it but it was $35 USD last I checked. I think there are some readings of it on YouTube but I can’t vouch for the quality of any since I don’t do well with audio books.
The OVA can be really hard to find because it was only on the AC complete Blu-Ray discs of a certain edition- I’m pretty sure it was the first run of them but I may be wrong. Because of this and the fact that I’ve seen take-downs happen continuously each time I went back to reference it last year it’s to the point where some people are incorrectly assuming it’s just totally lost media. Either way I have a so-so quality copy I saved, I won’t put it on the post directly just to be cautious but if you’re interested DM me or contact me through discord (rivkae) if you have that and I’ll shoot you the drive link.
18) It’s absolutely criminal that the fandom has been sleeping on…
In og CC Gillian dies with a smile on her face. In reunion it’s blocked by a vignette.
I’ve never seen it mentioned in a fic dealing with her death yet, the few that there are, so eventually I’m just going to have to do it myself.
This answer is almost pathetically short because every time I start thinking about this I get the urge to write. Since I can't really sit down to write prose right now so I'm not going to get to into it.
25) Common fandom complaint that you’re sick of hearing?
(Slightly dramatized for effect, I’m not saying the fandom because I’m mostly out of it writing wise right now but iykyk feel free to send me your guesses)
‘Ewww I hate y and z version of [media]!!! X version of [media] is the only good one- anyone who interacts with y and z supporting posts will be blocked!’
‘I hate this version of my favorite character from x in y and z [complaint that could be very easily interpreted as racism] anyone with art of this design will be blocked! DNI if you have [bastardized version of the characters name to show distaste] content!’
Except then they don’t block you after you DNI, they start following your blog posting stuff for y and z version of [media]
Now obviously blocking is a core part of the tumblr experience, really the entire social media experience but it’s taken more seriously other places. Here though? If they breathe annoyingly it is perfectly fine and normal to block them- encouraged even! I have no issues with a DNI, BYF, etc as concepts I just get a little irked when people don’t practice what they preach while still loudly complaining about [media].
Now obviously adaptations make a lot of people angry for good reasons sometimes, I understand that. I dislike many adaptations myself, but it’s the incessant complaining when you aren’t even following your own rules that it gets under my skin a bit. That’s not even mentioning the drama that happens in discord servers with areas about said alternate versions of [media] where most community spaces to discuss said versions die quickly due to the toxicity of comparison and the group norm to conform to being putting x version, the original version, over the other version. You can like y and z but you should like x more- you should agree that x is objectively better. Even if x is also offensive in several ways and dated in others and isn’t as easy to consume story wise- which is how y and z brought new fans to the fandom.
I’m going to cut myself off there but… Yeah. I hate adaptations too sometimes but it shouldn’t be used to backhandedly bully others into silence. Let people enjoy what makes them happy.

Zack: Aaanngeeeal!
Angeal: *muttering* How many syllables does my name have?
Sephiroth: About seven, I think.
*later that day*
Genesis: Aaaannngeeeaalll!
Sephiroth: *whispering* It's up to nine, now.
Angeal: Do we need to have another talk about rhetorical questions?
*later that year*
Gillian: Angeal Hewley!
Sephiroth: Oh, that sounded like a normal amount of syllables.
Angeal: That's not better!
*back in ShinRa*
Lazard: Captain Hewley?
Angeal: T H A N K Y O U !

I noticed a pattern: Gillian couldn't live with the truth and committed suicide, causing great pain to Angeal. Angeal couldn't live with the truth too and forced Zack to kill him, causing great pain to him. And they both smiled

There are a lot of myths and misconceptions about what SOLDIER treatments do to a person’s body, some of which are started and/or perpetuated by SOLDIERs themselves.
When visiting home, Genesis exploits one such myth to get out of having to eat anything with bell peppers in it, while Angeal invents one of his own to avoid being fed beets.

GENESIS RHAPSODOS HEADCANONS
Tumblr media
[these are my headcanons, meaning the way I view him in my head and may not follow popular fanon]
↘︎ Genesis was trained in fencing as a child. This was his introduction to sword-fighting and what ignited his proficiency in swordsmanship—of course this is also the root cause of why his sword is modeled after a rapier.
↘︎ He was obligated to study Latin, old Banoran, and Mideelese when he was a boy and is proficient in all three, though sadly not completely fluent in any.
↘︎ He has a golden singing voice and makes sure everybody knows. He had started learning to play the piano as a young boy but that was cut short when he enlisted in the army.
↘︎ He still has his favorite stuffed animal from childhood, a plush phoenix named Braeburn. It’s a little worn and its fabric is matted but it’s still locked away somewhere in his closet
↘︎ Genesis is a total apple snob, frequently being rather arrogant in his opinions—e.g.: he thinks gala apples are atrocious.
↘︎ He claims to only listen to classical pieces and musical soundtracks, but anyone who knows him IRL knows how big of a lie that is. Genesis is obsessed with the band LOVELESS and can turn into a complete metalhead when he’s in a fiery mood. He’s also big into trashy pop music. Big.
↘︎ His childhood endeavors included participating in musicals and other performances, seeing as he did theatre in late childhood. He was also encouraged by his parents to enter various competitions. The trophies can still be found on his desk in the Banora mines.
↘︎ As I kind of teased here, Genesis’s parents are—contrary to popular belief—pretty decent people. Angeal would describe them as ‘eccentric rich people’ while Genesis would regard them as having no filter whatsoever. They’re Genesis’s #1 fans and love to boast about his achievements.
↘︎ Genesis’s mother and Gillian call him Genny, and he endures it seething with rage.
↘︎ Genesis’s relationship with his parents became strained in his teen years but mellowed out once he reached adulthood. His parents are the primary Banora White and Banora White juice exporters in Banora.
↘︎ Genesis can cook. How did he learn? By spending too much time around Gillian Hewley as a child, leading him to pick up the basics. And of course, he’s a big reader so he can follow a recipe—oftentimes challenging himself to cook complicated dishes. Genesis can bake, although he rarely has the patience to, and his specialties include Banora White apple pie and apple tart.
↘︎ Amongst his many pet peeves, his primary ones include seeing his name misspelled and not being the center of attention
↘︎ He’s sometimes invited to model and do photo ops for famous designers, something he’s immensely praised for due to his attractive features.
↘︎ Genesis isn’t scared of insects and certain animals like rats, so much as he’s grossed out by them. Having said that, he will scream.
↘︎ People who’ve met him say he smells like apples, cinnamon, and expensive cologne
↘︎ He’s a social butterfly and has friends in multiple departments at ShinRa. He often uses this as a ruse to get out of doing work. Lazard is tired of sending awkward 3rd classes to go fetch Genesis from the General Affairs floor, where they find him gossiping. Needless to say, his eternal best friends are Angeal and Sephiroth.
↘︎ Genesis also has many friends in the theatre industry and regularly supports smaller shows, and sometimes appears on podcasts.
↘︎ As much as he and Sephiroth fight and argue, they both know it’s purely for entertainment and would never deliberately hurt each other. Angeal gets a kick out of making them hug it out after every argument
↘︎ Genesis would never openly admit the jealousy and resentment he harbors toward Sephiroth, but he would also never reveal the respect he has for him. Genesis loves to buy Sephiroth childish knick-knacks, candy, and other stuff he knows Sephiroth never got to experience.
↘︎ Genesis himself has no filter and will openly insult and demean people in the name of being “honest.” He’s also a serial gossiper and will even go out of his way to create rumors to feed the mill at ShinRa.
↘︎ His first kiss was with a girl from Banora village. He kissed her under the large Dumbapple tree on his family’s property. Afterward, he got curious and kissed her twin brother in the very same spot.
↘︎ He avoids the sun like the plague in the summer for fear of his freckles resurfacing.
↘︎ He has a series of writing WIPs he never finishes and never will finish due to his dissatisfaction with his own writing.
↘︎ He refers to Angeal and Sephiroth as Angela and Sophia for laughs. He shuts up quickly when they call him Genevieve though.
↘︎ If you see him wearing sunglasses at 7 AM indoors, there’s a 97.8% chance he’s hiding the dark circles he acquired after staying up the whole night reading. Bonus points if he has overpriced coffee in his hands.
↘︎ He’s actually fiercely protective over Zack and Cloud, who he affectionately calls Puppy and Baby Chocobo. He would never admit this, of course, and whenever he sees the pair he goes “Oh, Goddess, the children are here.”
↘︎ Contrary to popular belief, he does hand in his paperwork and mission reports on time. Goddess forbid he’s outbested by Sephiroth in that department and seen as anything other than the perfect SOLDIER.

Genesis was a weird kid. Sweet. But weird.
Begging and pleading on my hands and knees for everyone to get that this is a joke, this is not a shippy pic, Genesis is 5 years old and does not understand what a "dowry" is, that's the joke.

"And so we gain a pair of guests, on our grand escape from that place of misery and tyranny! You should count yourselves as esteemed, then, for there are not many - no, not any who have been welcomed into our company before! Judging by your looks alone, I can tell who you are.... But even without looks, the bond that resides deep within us connects beyond such shallow waters-" "GENESIS, SHUT UP AND GUIDE BAHAMUT SO THAT WE DON'T FLY INTO A BUILDING."
Thorns Unbound, Chapter 2: Three Wings
Whereupon Sephiroth doesn't entirely deal with a trio of intruders, and instead finds out some interesting things about himself.

In defense of Angeal and Banora apples
Tumblr media
I often see criticism of Angeal in Crisis Core Reunion for stealing from poor farmers while leaving the richest family's dumbapples alone just because Genesis was his friend.
I understand the immediate instinctive reaction to take from the richest, however, if you follow the story closely you will see that there were no poor farmers in Banora. Which Angeal explicitly says anyway.
Tumblr media
But I want to dig a bit deeper:
The whole Banora village was fake and was staffed with Shinra's employees, as well as served to keep employees from Project G under house arrest.
The only reason why Angeal's family was poor was because Angeal's mother, Gillian Hewley, refused Shinra's compensation since she suffered from guilty conscience for participating as a scientist in Shinra's Jenova experiments, and even doing the experiment on her own child. That she unsuccessfully tried to escape Shinra's house arrest with her baby certainly didn't improve her living conditions.
So, we know Gillian was offered large sums of money, and from "The Kids are Alright: A Turks Side Story" novel we know that fake villagers, who populated Nibelheim after the Sephiroth incident, were also Shinra's employees, and received enormous sums of money to live there and keep their mouths shut. So it's obviously Shinra's modus operandi in such situations.
So again, there were no poor farmers in Banora because people there, in addition to having farms, were handsomely paid by Shinra.
Also, one child eating apples can't do any significant damage to a farm.
Ok, so if we accept Angeal eating apples was no big deal, then why didn't he just eat the tastiest apples from the biggest landowner who, even if everyone was rich, would feel it the least? Why not ask Genesis, like Zack suggested?
Why would honor stop him from asking, but not from stealing in general?
It wouldn't, it's mistranslation, it's supposed to say pride *sigh*
Angeal says in Japanese:
アンジール:しかし そんな俺にも誇りはあった
Angeal: But I had my pride.
Tumblr media
.....
アンジール:誇りというのは厄介なものだ
Angeal: Pride is burdensome/a tricky thing/troublesome.
Tumblr media
I don't know why they translated it in a way that makes it possible to confuse it with one of Angeal's lectures on SOLDIER honor, and to make it seem like he's saying it's dishonorable to ask his friend but not steal from others. But this part has nothing to do with his code of honor as a grown man, he's just saying that as a kid, it would have hurt his pride to ask his best friend for food.
He stole because he was poor and it wasn't hurting anyone, he didn't ask Genesis because of his pride, and he didn't take from a friend because of honor - honoring their friendship.

hmmm 1 and 22?
Heck yea thank you so much for the ask @banorawhite! :D
1. The character everyone gets wrong.
You know 'im, you love 'im, it's the one and only Genesis Rhapsodos, babey~! Honestly, I've seen people treat him like he's some special kind of terrible for an antagonist whilst not holding the same measure to other characters who have behaved just as bad. Do I condone any of the terrible actions he took? Of course not! Do I also find him infinitely fascinating and nuanced and not just a one-dimensional poetry-quoting asshole? Yes! I get Mr. Rhapsodos drove quite a people mad with his LOVELESS-quoting tendencies, and I will say that Crisis Core suffered for being limited to the PSP and from some poor writing choices. But I'll also say that if Square had properly contrasted his pre-and-post degradation mental state and built a sturdy foundation of his friendship with Angeal and Sephiroth, the impact of his desertion and the betrayal he felt would've hit much harder. that's what fanart and fanfic are for and Genesis is so much richer for it
22. Your favourite part of canon that everyone else ignores.
I bet there's a bunch, but my brain is malfunctioning and all I can think of right now is not quite something that's ignored per-se but I haven't seen much on yet. Gillian Hewley's house in Banora is covered in lovely nature photos that I am certain were taken by Angeal and gifted to her by him to brighten things up.
Also, another obscure thing that I noticed that when Zack goes to Banora in Crisis Core, there are wreaths on all the doors of the houses. The timeline notes that this happens in December, which would imply these are festive decorations. And that just kind of breaks my heart for whatever reason cause it means the village was taken over not long after people put out decorations. Ouch.
Also I need to mention my headcanon that Mideel appears to be in the southern hemisphere, which means Banora has a summer Christmas. And cause I'm Australian, for years I've had the mental image of Genesis, Sephiroth and Angeal (and screw timelines, Zack and Cloud too) having a typical Aussie barbeque/Christmas celebration in Banora. Think Angeal on the barbie, cooking up a storm and chugging a beer, Zack and Cloud playing backyard cricket, Genesis and Sephiroth sitting in those dingy white lawn chairs in shorts and silly Christmas shirts with sunnies on, Gillian putting together a pavlova, etc.
