I’m back from vacation, it was amazing minus the flying part of it, slowly catching up over the next few days! My phone was in airplane mode for 9 days, only rare access to wifi, I feel SO refreshed not knowing anything that has been going on.
Also, I was somewhere that is a popular destination internationally, and I’ve realized I can successfully identify Korean being spoken in the wild now. Korean families say hi to each other when they spot each other abroad! Americans don’t do this so I thought it was cool that I could at least understand that much.
#they do get around north america a good bit#i love playing identify the language#germans also are everywhere#also flying right now is insane#our flight got cancelled 4 hours before it was supposed to leave#and we got rebooked on something arriving a full 27 hours later#than originally scheduled#spent a lot of time and money trying to get there only 12 hours later#on a series of 2 flights that were collectively delayed 13 times#we got rebooked 4 times my husband got waitlisted after having a ticket#spent 2 hours sitting on the tarmac#it was a fucking nightmare#i was a ball of stress and anxiety for 36 hours#i couldn't eat or sleep#that's never happened to me before#and i've had plenty of flight issues and drama in the past#made me think of hobi's comments about his state before lolla#it's a fucking horrible way to feel#and i just had expensive days of a bucket list vacation on the line#ugh i feel for them#anxiety to the point of appetite loss is something else

I am language DISinclined as much as I WANT to learn a language. I’m so interested in languages that I have an English BA and I’ve considered going for a MA in linguistics because etymology is 🤩
But I can’t for the life of me learn a full language. That being said, I pick up random words in different languages all over the freaking place.
French? Yup. Italian? Check. Russian. Mmhmm. German. Yes. Sign language? Odd one out but yep. Spanish? Who doesn’t know a few odd words when you live in the US.
I DONT GET HOW PEOPLE CAN FULLY LEARN OTHER LANGUAGES WHEN MY BRAIN IS JUST LIKE “I like these words. Yeah. These are good. That’s it though. :)”

Oh I totally get it honestly, language learning is not that easy usually especially when it comes to grammar which feels like a hellhole whatever the language you try to learn ! I did learn german at school and all I remember are a few sentences and christmas songs but the grammar is all forgotten already ugh.. Tried to learn japanese and grammar lost me again. As for finnish I just randomly say stuff and pray it is understandable, not an ounce of knowledge on it’s grammar.
The best way imo is to listen to other people speak the language more than try to learn the basics via grammar, sure it is important but getting the hang of a language by hearing it helps a lot !
Oh and I know a good online site I use as a French to English and vice versa dictionnary ! It’s called Wordreference it helps me quite a lot whenever I have doubts on some word’s meanings or when I remember a word in english but not in my own language…
And yeah, I gave a weird grammatical exception up here in french, that’s partially why hearing a language helps better than trying to understand the grammar first… We also have lots of words with a silent "t" at the end like "chat" (cat) which you pronounce "sha" or "rat" (rat) pronounced "rat" and then you have a few exceptions where the t is not silent all of a sudden like "brut" (crude/variety of champagne/brute)
And why ?? Well because that’s it, no real explanation sometimes….

Woe, 1839 German bible uncovered in family attic be upon ye!
included: names/birthdays from 1892-1985, a pressed flower, a printed condolence card (1913)
not included: several locks of hair, a handmade condolence card (march 1842), 5 deitsch marriage certificates (1851-1935) lots of notes written in deitsch, and the chemise it was wrapped in
#anyways we found all this clearing out my great-great aunt’s house after her passing 6 years ago#There was a photo album too!! I think the earliest one was dated 1871 but don’t quote me on it#I might post photos of it next time I visit my hometown because it’s gorgeous#the benefit of your family never leaving 1 very small county is that there ends up being a lot of history#also it’s really fascinating because my family spoke deitsch in the home up through the forties so a lot of the notes#Written in are minor translations (deitsch is linguistically distinct but Very similar to german)#All of my great-relatives (and the handful of great-greats that I met) could/can still speak a little#Unfortunately WW1/WW2 meant that deitsch pretty much died out everywhere except Amish/mennonite communities#My grandparents still know a couple words but haven’t really spoken it since they were kids#HOWEVER I have learned that some of my/my family’s weird grammar (which I discovered was weird very late in life) is a holdover from deitsc#This has been your obscure linguistics infodump of the day thanks for listening#Whispers from the ally

thinking abt my "culture" as a concept is super... strange. as a white north american. and i dont know how to articulate this beyond "its so big it's nothing" and im aware it's so so so incredibly privileged to have a big disconnect from "my culture" because it's everywhere as opposed to because people tried to stamp it out! I know. i'm just thinking out loud about how it is strange.

Actually, you know how transphobes kept saying something like "Ohh, you are going to be put into prison if you misgender someone"? Because in Germany, if you out someone who got their gender marker and name changed against their will, you can get a fine. And that's not a new law, that has existed since 1981.
I don't know how often that's actually enforced, but I find that almost humorous. (Also I think most transphobes who have said that are USAmerican, so of course they don't know shit about german laws)

They are also called 'Devils Hole Fish' in english#And 'Teufelskärpfling' in german which roughly translates to 'Devils finfish' in english#They are about 2 to 3 cm long which is like one or two inches I think? I have no idea about inches and all that#The individuals in this image are (as seen in the file name) male which can be seen in their blue color; in general they are silvery white#(with in general I mean outside the mating season; the female fish are silver all the time iirc)#They are endangered and only live in one place which is also where they were discovered around 1830? or 1890...or 1930? I hate numbers :(#it's one of those I'm sure#That place would be a limestone basin above a warm water source called the Devils hole (hence the name of the fish)#That water source is located 15m underneath the ground and the basin above it is about as big as a small room I'd say#People have tried to grow the population artifically but it failed which is tragic since the population in that basin is still declining#as far as I know at least; it's possible I missed something and it went back up again but last I knew there were like only... 110 of them?#This is because of a pump station located very closely to this Devil's hole (can you see I find that name is amusing?)#is stopping the water in that basin from rising; and therefore endangering the habitat of these fish#The close by Hover Damn is also responsible for this and researching this I did not expect this name to pop up#Fallout New Vegas follows me everywhere it would seem#And also! They eat diatoms which are some funky looking things as well! Algae if I remember correctly#I highly highly highly recommend looking at pictures of those#They are pretty pretty; trust me on this#Also; and feel free to ignore this; but these guys give me Mirage and V1 from Ultrakill vibes#based on the color mostly#Although really; show me anything blue and metallic and I will find a way to make it about them#Don't even get me started on color associations; I will not shut up and that is a promise#I could make one of those 5 hour breakdowns of why which shade of any color makes me think of the little idiots that occupy my mind 24/7

9 times out of 10 I’m gonna fuck up and pronounce it “Massive Two Shits” instead of “Massachusetts” and I am very sorry.
My mouth doesn’t do enunciation too good and you require me to pronounce all of the letters very specifically.
#for the record half my family is Eastern European so like my pronunciation skills are a problem everywhere#though the ‘settled communities geeeations ago’ and like ‘the Ukrainians and Polish bonded with the local Indigenous peopl’#means that those three getting together are responsible for what my English sounds like today#(for the record a lot of Eastern European settlers in Canada were running from Russia. so. very little has changed.)#there’s also the Germans who probably did not help make the already rural accent sound like ‘Good Respectable English’#I said once ‘you might not place it. people from here do their best not to sound like it once they leave.’#which feels like it says a lot about how I feel about language policing without context#sometimes words mean different things for different people ‘cause their slang comes from different root languages#gotch are fun because it’s such a common phrase I know but it’s based in Ukrainian and a bunch of Eastern Canadians were talking shit#like that it wasn’t a real thing until I pointed out it was pronounced more like ‘gitch’ and is probably from Weatern Canada more#‘cause more Ukrainian settlers in western Canadian history.#accents. are fuckin weird

Trying to not have a menty b about it but I think my heart longs for the us

WHY would they teach me how to make proper contractions in English in secondary school when in university I get told that I shouldn't use them in formal writing??!??
#part time studyblr#english#this bugs me#because it's so natural and also books use them all the time#but all style guides are like: NO#BUT FOR REAL WHO SAYS SHOULD NOT instead of shouln't#shouldn't*#okay no but like the thing is for me contractions are like one of the main defining features of English and then I CAN'T USE THEM???#that's the part that bugs me#because Dutch does barely have contractions#I don't think I've encountered them in Swedish or French or German#(Dutch contractions occur in the form of 's morgens#which comes from des morgens but that's a case thing and we don't use that anymore and I think that's the only kind of contraction we use)#but in English they are EVERYWHERE#and then some people on the internet will go like:#THaT iS NOt FOrmAl!! YoU Can NOT UsE tHEm!#like read that sentence it feels unnatural#anyway so I have strong opinions on this and I think it's a dumb rule#but I'm gonna read through my report and delete all contractions#like I get why I shouldn't use gonna in my reports like that is informal#but contractions?? that's just how English works#anyway#ACTUALLY I'm not done#(you need to know this is 5 minutes later)#but couldn't and could not also have like a different meaning in my head?
