To be a human body is to be an agent; but it is also to be passive and vulnerable, an object of history as well as a subject of it. (―Terry Eagleton, Tragedy)

I'm sick of all the hate Sam gets for anything.
Let's start with the people who call him selfish for not wanting that stupid hunter life. Of course, he was selfish because he wanted everything any child wanted, a loving family, friends and being able to study, wow how selfish!
He was later accused of not loving Dean enough just because in the early seasons he wasn't as dependent on his brother as Dean was on him .It seems that those people watched the show with their feet, because when Dean was dying in s1, Sam did everything to not let him die.
We move forward to s4 where he gets ALL the blame for becoming addicted to demon blood and neglecting his brother, when it is clear that Ruby manipulated him. He was mourning the death of her brother and coincidentally the only one who was there supporting him was her, obviously we know why. Without Dean, Sam needed a reason to keep going, and that was revenge.
Then in s8 when he got mad at Dean for letting an angel POSSESS HIM WITHOUT HIS CONSENT, he had every right to be furious and many didn't even try to understand why. In the program it is seen that many times he has lost control of his body, soul and mind.
Starting with Meg, when she possessed him in s2, forcing him to kill another hunter and make him watch the scene (I forgot, Azazel also used him as his puppet).
We already talked about Ruby and how much damage she did to him by manipulating him and trying to turn him against his brother and oh, of course making him addicted to something that was corrupting him.
Do you remember the episode where this guy Gary switches bodies with Sam? Well, you'll remember that he had SEX WITH SAM'S BODY, God I don't know how the writers find that funny.
We must not forget that Lucifer tortured him all those years in the cage and obviously raped him, yet there are stupid people saying that Sam is weak for allowing the wall in his head to break. Dude, seen the show?
We have Gadreel, the icing on the cake, who possessed him and killed Kevin with his body, nothing more.
And so there are many more things for which Sam is accused of being a bad person and brother. Dude???

thinking about Sam post-Gadreel going to get his anti-possession tattoo re-done. And as the artist is working on him, he starts thinking.
Goes into research mode when he gets back to the bunker, looks up every sort of anti-possession ward he can think of, dives deeper into the library and starts making his own spells. He consults with Don for some advice, digs out Patrick's number and has a sigh of relief when the witch picks up and runs his thoughts by him, too. Searches and searches until he finds a tattooist who is hunting-adjacent and understands why he wants the ink mixed with a bit of holy water.
He gets his second tattoo on his back, centered, and it takes several hours spread out over months. Castiel helps him with the aftercare, spreads balm over the healing tattoo, washes it with holy oil, makes sure it stays clean and healthy the entire time. When it's done, his back is covered in runes and Latin and Enochian sigils. Esoteric symbols from every culture he could think of. All of them geared towards protecting his mind and body and soul from demons and angels and ghosts and witches. No possession. No body-swaps. No mind-control. Everything he and the witches and Castiel and the bunker library could think of.
When his back is done, he gets bits and pieces of the tattoo done on other areas. Anti-possession tattoo behind his knee, on the sole of his foot, on his hip and shoulder and around his navel. Enochian script flowing along his biceps. Tiny runes of protection behind his ears. And it's not enough. He still doesn't feel safe.
He gives himself an undercut, shaves away the hair at the base of his skull, and has a spell tattooed onto his scalp to protect him from mind-control and starts to feel better.
Finally, he asks "Have you ever tattooed something... intimate?"
The tattooist has been in the business, and known enough hunters, not to be phased. "It'll hurt," he warns.
"I can handle pain," Sam says, and he doesn't think about the Cage as he pulls his jeans and briefs down.
The request might not have phased the artist but Sam's size has him raising an appreciative brow - still professional, nothing that makes Sam feel uncomfortable, and he's all business as he wipes Sam down with sterilizing cleanser.
"Just fit as much as you can," Sam says.
The tattooist laughs at that. "Man, I could fit a novel on this," he says and Sam blushes as he chuckles.
Sam concentrates on staring at the ceiling and keeping his breathing steady, counts his breaths while the man works. The buzz of the machine is oddly soothing, and the clinical way the man touches him is reassuring.
Safe.
And for the first time since he kicked that damned angel out of his body, he can close his eyes without seeing Kevin's burned out eyes staring blindly, accusingly, into his.

sam's initial reaction to the bunker is actually heart-wrenching. do you guys ever think about how fucking terrifying it is that sam eventually just accepts that he's going to suffer forever? that he'll never have a home? that pain is what he DESERVES, his destiny, what he's fated for. the loneliness of sam's character genuinely HURTS me, especially when they show us over and over again that he craves humanity so badly. him running away to stanford and his short stint with amelia are just two examples but i could go on for hours about how much sam perpetually craves connection. every single time the opportunity is presented he jumps at the chance because even if it has ended in disaster every other time he so desperately wants something permanent, something that's his, to feel like he belongs anywhere.
the sole reason that sam was able to gain control over lucifer in swan song and jump into the cage was because of that little soldier man figurine in the impala. that entire episode revolved around the impala and how it was sam and dean's home their entire life. those little snippets of them carving their initials into her skeleton and how dean made sure to keep all those little personal effects every time he rebuilt her... it just tears me apart knowing what sam goes through later on. he places such deep, deep importance on the small stretches of life that he gets to experience in between the pain and loss that is the rest of it.
this is why when sam told dean that he couldn't call the bunker home because every home he's had has literally GONE UP IN FLAMES, it absolutely destroyed me, because there was so much FEAR and desperation in that scene. that 'normalcy' that sam wanted when he was younger wasn't actually about the specifics of civilian life. it was about having a home, and the peace of mind that he could unconditionally trust that the people he loved wouldn't leave or die.
but the bunker is literally warded against fucking everything. in s9 the bunker is presented as this impenetrable fortress, full of decades of lore and weaponry and information, a perfect dream hideout for a hunter. it's the first real chance at safety that sam has ever had but he absolutely cannot trust it. he tried with jess and with amelia but he's just so tired, so scared to care because its inevitable that this will also go up in flames. after everything he's lost? he can't even consider it. he's had this desperate need his entire life but he's so wary and fearful that he can't let himself hope even when the stars align perfectly.
it's terribly tragic. the silent, burning loneliness in sam's character is so well done and it talks to how much sam's been through that he's genuinely accepted that he will never get the luxury of safety or trusting anybody but himself. it really highlights how twisted up he is despite people insisting that he is the 'normal' brother.

Supernatural Make Me Choose: anonymous asked possessed by Lucifer Sam or possessed by Gadreel Sam?
I've been waiting for you... for a long, long time. Come on, Sam. You have to admit – you can feel it, right? What? The exhilaration. And you know why that is? Because we're two halves made whole.

s9: Remember gadreel?(warning: rant)
Tumblr media
Remember gadreel?....
How the arc was: sam was dying after the trials and dean was desperate to save him n on the brink of shaking hands with Death, dean tricks sam n stuffs an angel into him (aka rape) ? .... n then how it led to:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And
Tumblr media
And then all this?:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That led to idiot dean doing this
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
& you know what the kicker is? - all of it - completely unnecessary 🙄...
Its just a Massive plot hole OR a very clear indication of deans selfishness being clearly portrayed: let me explain-
- they had OG Death still around back then - Billie wasn't in the picture and so there wasn't a reaper'-"fatwa" on the winchesters n "losing 'em in the empty"-campaign yet...
Dean & tfw in general ALREADY KNEW HOW TO SUMMON n make deals with Death- hell, dean did it just to shove sams soul back n they were still allies at that point just before in s8 (&again in s10/11)
Not to mention, they ALSO knew how to make deals with reapers - THEY'D literally used it to help Sam complete his 2nd trial in s8, just earlier!....
So it wasn't like an angel possessing sam was literally the ONLY option available to dean to save his dying brother- he could have reached out to Death or reapers or literally anything else!....
Hell, when gadreel showed dean sam chatting to Death - that alone should have given him an idea to make a deal with death or reapers ....
Point is - he could have let sam die n then brought him back as he'd done before...
why was violating sam the 1st and only option he considered at that point? - especially KNOWING how sam would feel about it?- hell he even said it to gadreel....n then proceeded to do the exact opposite
dean is supposed to be the "genius at hunting and lore" - he knows all sorts of things about all sorts of gods n beings even if he didn't deal with death - & we know it was hours they'd spent in the hospital if not days ... he could've been looking for options - but it's clear he hasn't been...
but no, nothing else considered n sam raped by proxy and violated by the person he trusted the most - because to dean sam wasn't a human being, just this living-doll he possessed n carried around with him, labelled "little brother" like a toy a boy carries around for his own comfort....which is why sam is EXACTLY right when he said: "you didn't save me for me, you did it for you"
If not for Dumbass, selfish deans decisions, none of this would have happened:
Kevin not killed, his mom not killed
No moc!dean n demon!dean
maybe metatron still and gadreel but differently
No darkness released n dumb undercooked "return of mary" doesn't happen
No Charlie dying - hell we could had Kevin AND Charlie - it'd be hilarious to watch them together!...
Maybe they still get Jack n Rowena n return of lucifer etc...but at least sam wouldn't have to face the horrific reality of his beloved brother violating him

I was reading the draft script for 9x22 Stairway to Heaven and I found this part in it hilarious. Castiel opens the gates of heaven and finds shirtless pictures of Dean plastered everywhere. The next page cracks me up the most because it sounds like Sam is implying that this is Castiel's ideal version of heaven. Is he too ashamed to admit he's got a schoolgirl obsession with Dean? If they actually included this in the episode, it would be the most wildest thing ever.
