Was Gadreel in love with Abner?

I’m surprised no one else is rushing to meta about this, especially with a fandom as slash happy as Supernatural. The impression I got from the episode is yes, Gadreel was in love with Abner and I feel like talking about why I think that is true. I’m not sure what this says about the resolution of Dean and Cas’s relationship as romantic or if it even has anything to do with that, but I think it makes Gadreel even sadder, in any case.

The first scene we get with Gadreel he meets another angel. This angel is inhabiting some sort of pop star, with this weird sort of k-pop vibe, named Corey. (I’m going to call this angel “angel-in-Cory.” I think his name is Thadeus but I can’t find the spelling of his name on a wiki or imdb.) Anyway, we learn that angel-in-Cory was Gadreel’s prison guard. He did more than guard Gadreel, he tortured him, but it seems that was a part of his orders. But angel-in-Corey also tortured an angel that Gadreel was associated with named Abner.

AiC: I was guard, I was doing my job.

G: What you did to Abner, was that your job?

AiC: Your boyfriend, no that was just fun. Is that what you’re here for, the big pay back?

Now to me this still reads as ambiguous. The angel-in-Corey could be teasing Gadreel. Characters who are men, or at least male bodied, are teased for having emotional attachments, especially to other men. “You’re not all stoic and cut off from your emotions, so you’re not manly and therefor gay.” Even the suggestion for payback doesn’t tell us anything besides the fact that Gadreel and Abner were close. Supernatural likes to show us with Sam and Dean the strength of familial, non-sexy type love and by this scene one could think that’s the kind of love that Gadreel and Abner have.

In the next scene with Gadreel he meets Metatron at a bar and he gives Gadreel the name of Alexander Sarver. We learn later that the this is the vessel of Abner. In the bar scene Metatron tells Gadreel that he has to prove his loyalty and worth. It seems to me that Metatron sent Gadreel to Abner to prove the extent of his loyalty. If Gadreel will kill the one that he’s closest to for Metatron that speaks volumes about his loyalty. I personally still don’t get “eros,” from this whole thing just yet. So they met and look surprised and delighted to see each other.

To me it gets very not ambiguous right around the time the little girl in the scene calls out to “daddy.” Gadreel looks shocked and heart broken. Jared plays the scene as a someone who has come across their old lover who has clearly moved on with someone new. He tries to smile at the little girl, Abner’s daughter in effect, but it’s a feeble little twitch.

When they talk Abner talks about having moved on from his past. He’s settled into Alexander’s life. He admits that he was a “crappy angel.” In Supernatural an angel’s defining trait is their loyalty and Abner was not loyal because he “abandoned is post,” or defied his orders and was locked up for 700 years because of it. However, he has moved past the pain from that experience. He also gets no joy from knowing that his former prison guard is now dead, nor is he happy that Gadreel got revenge, revenge that Gadreel claims was for both of them.

A: I wish you hadn’t of done that.

G: But why? He tortured us, you most of all.

A: I remember, and I remember you were always there to put me back together.

G: We were friends.

A: We are friends.

I find it to be a little telling that Abner and Gadreel never refer to each other as “brother.” To me this shows their relationship was different than the ones that most angels have with each other. I wonder if angel-in-Cory tortured Abner as an additional torture to Gadreel verse torturing Abner because of his crimes. Gadreel had to watch as someone precious to him was broken down and then returned to him. Gadreel would “put him back together,” make him well again, and then Abner would be taken away from Gadreel again. Gadreel is not over the torture of Abner, probably because it was really about Gadreel in the first place.

A: The fall, it’s our second chance. We can forget our old hates, who we were.

G: It’s not that easy.

A: Yes it is. Look at me, I’m happy.

G: And your vessel, is he happy?

Gadreel wants to give some of his hurt back to Abner by reminding him that he stole a life that wasn’t his to begin with. He’s very clearly upset with what Abner is saying, he’s upset that Abner is happy with out him, moved on with out him. This again reads as more a reaction a lover would have, not a friend. Abner counters Gadreel’s comment by saying his vessel was not a good man, implying that the family he adopted is now better with Abner around. During all of Abner’s talk Gadreel does a lot of glowering and jaw clenching but he looks at Abner the entire time. However, there’s a change in Gadreel’s demeanor when Abner says “I love my family and they love me.” He looks away and down from Abner as if he’s just received a particularly devastating emotional blow.

Gadreel realizes that Abner never loved Gadreel the way he loved Abner. When Gadreel looks back at Abner his eyes are narrowed, and looks quiet angry. He’s angry that Abner is happy, has love, and at peace with himself.

Abner then says what he thinks the key to happiness is, “getting the one thing you want and never letting it go,” which is what seals his fate. Gadreel knows now he can’t be with Abner like he wants, he’s too full of rage and jealousy, but he can redeem himself in heaven by doing what Metatron says. So he proves his loyalty to Metatron because he believes his love for Abner is not wanted.

I'm sick of all the hate Sam gets for anything.

Let's start with the people who call him selfish for not wanting that stupid hunter life. Of course, he was selfish because he wanted everything any child wanted, a loving family, friends and being able to study, wow how selfish!

He was later accused of not loving Dean enough just because in the early seasons he wasn't as dependent on his brother as Dean was on him .It seems that those people watched the show with their feet, because when Dean was dying in s1, Sam did everything to not let him die.

We move forward to s4 where he gets ALL the blame for becoming addicted to demon blood and neglecting his brother, when it is clear that Ruby manipulated him. He was mourning the death of her brother and coincidentally the only one who was there supporting him was her, obviously we know why. Without Dean, Sam needed a reason to keep going, and that was revenge.

Then in s8 when he got mad at Dean for letting an angel POSSESS HIM WITHOUT HIS CONSENT, he had every right to be furious and many didn't even try to understand why. In the program it is seen that many times he has lost control of his body, soul and mind.

Starting with Meg, when she possessed him in s2, forcing him to kill another hunter and make him watch the scene (I forgot, Azazel also used him as his puppet).

We already talked about Ruby and how much damage she did to him by manipulating him and trying to turn him against his brother and oh, of course making him addicted to something that was corrupting him.

Do you remember the episode where this guy Gary switches bodies with Sam? Well, you'll remember that he had SEX WITH SAM'S BODY, God I don't know how the writers find that funny.

We must not forget that Lucifer tortured him all those years in the cage and obviously raped him, yet there are stupid people saying that Sam is weak for allowing the wall in his head to break. Dude, seen the show?

We have Gadreel, the icing on the cake, who possessed him and killed Kevin with his body, nothing more.

And so there are many more things for which Sam is accused of being a bad person and brother. Dude???

saw someone make a comment about how “there’s no proof sam winchester isn’t straight!!” and it made me realize how new this side of spn tumblr is to bi/pan/nonbinary/queer sam. the history of it, the evidence for it, and most importantly…how fun it can be!!

as someone who’s been in the trenches in both the samgirl/desticule side of tumblr over the years I thought it’d be fun to share some LGBT Sam Winchester History (Herstory? Theirstory?) for anyone new to queer sam headcanons (and canon) but still interested!

What is Sam's sexuality?

Someone sent this interesting statement regarding Dean and Sam’s sexuality:

“Why do a lot of people say Dean is bi n everything when Jensen flat out tells people he is not?? Like yes its a headcanon but that’s all it is Head-Canon, not Canon- out of all the characters we honestly should try to find out more on Sam seeing as when asked about his love life n stuff like that Jared say guys or girls and that he would have no problem with playing Sam as pan/bi-??? (May not be 100% accurate I just remember a video of Jared saying both Boys and Girls when in reference to Sam))”

Now that is something interesting. The only people who question Dean’s sexuality are, and always have been, the destihellers. Normal fans of the show don’t care enough, because a character’s sexuality is not important to the story of Supernatural. The most important relationship on this show is between the two brothers. What they do with their sexual conquests does not impact their personal relationship with each other or even how they do their job. They still hunt in the normal way, and they still save people. As a levelheaded viewer, I will respect the canon and the fact that Dean is straight. However, it would be fun to discuss Sam’s sexuality in our little corner provided we don’t take each other’s words and start nagging CW to make Sam anything other than what he really is. I am giving you my theory. But it is still a theory which means, its just an opinion. It just opens doors for more interpretation.

When Dean is mistaken for a gay man, he reacts with great shock. Sam, on the other hand, just smiles. It amuses him. It might be because “this person hit the nail on the head”. Or it might be because he is amused at how mistaken that person is. He doesn’t consider being called gay, an attack on his masculinity. That might be the case with Dean because Dean is down home old fashioned when it comes to his sexuality. He’s not prejudiced. He just would prefer not to be mistaken as something he is not. That is why when Dean said “the more troubling question is why do these people assume we are gay”, Sam's amusing baby brother response was “well you are kind of butch. Probably think you’re overcompensating.’‘ He is trying to rib his big brother because he knows being called gay bothers Dean more than it does him.

Sam slept with a demon. He was in a state of terrible mourning. It might have clouded his judgment. However, the fact that the demon was in a female cadaver, might have motivated him. I don’t think this is proof of pansexuality because it would be insulting to assume that a pansexual will sleep with anyone, even a demon. Remember, Ruby strategically edged closer to him by using his dead brother as a motivation. Sam accessed a male cross roads demon to make a deal for his dead brother. If kissing the demon would have brought his brother back, I think he would have done it. None of this is proof his bi/pansexuality because emotional duress is a huge factor here, brought on by his love for his big brother. Remove Sam’s mourning and the entire scenario might not happen at all. None of this reflects on Sam’s sexuality.

Sam being raped by Luci is still up for debate and I wish they would bring closure to this issue because it is not a joke. However, being raped is no reflection on his sexuality. He’s just a victim, unless nothing happened and Luci is just being an expletive to annoy Sam.

There has been no indication about Sam’s sexuality in canon, except for this one exchange.

Dean to Henrikson: You kinky son of a b*tch. We don’t swing that way.

Now, because we respect canon, we have to take this whole statement as true. Dean is talking about both him and Sam. I accept as true because I am not a heller and because canonically it makes sense. Dean has raised Sam. He knows about all of Sam’s quirky little habits, about his likes, dislikes and embarrassing little fears. He knows exactly which one of Sam’s buttons to press. If Sam was bi or pan, Dean would know. On the flip side, like any other closeted person, Sam might have hid this side of himself from his brother, perhaps because he knows his brother well enough to know how to hide something like this from Dean.

But then that hypothesis brings up the pertinent question of why. What would be his reason for concealing something like this. He didn’t hide having sex with a cadaver. Both he and Dean have died plenty of times. Why would he hide this part of him from his brother in the face of death especially in the early years when they didn’t know they were immune to death? Is it because Dean is prejudiced? Well, Dean didn’t seem very prejudiced towards Charlie. Is it because he is concerned that, because if this new development, Dean wouldn’t understand how to react, and he doesn’t want to make Dean more confused, considering what Dean has to deal with on a daily basis? No, that doesn’t make sense either because if he cared so much about not worrying his family, he wouldn’t have gone to Stanford despite the fact that it tore the family apart.

To date Sam has only taken a personal interest in three male characters. Cas, Kevin and Jack. Jack doesn’t count here, because canonically Sam sees Jack as his child. Then there is Kevin. Even though there are a biased group of writers who didn’t really focus on Sam’s relationship with Kevin, some viewers may assume that Sam had a meaningful relationship with Kevin, whilst others will be offended by this because Kevin was a school kid and ’'Sam would never do that”. If you factor in Sam’s affection for Kevin, it might explain his anger towards his brother when the whole Gadreel debacle happened. Gadreel used his vessel to get close to Kevin and kill him. Maybe that’s why he was upset with his brother and blurted out his anger without meaning it.

Sam and Kevin were very similar. They were studious. They were thrown into a situation they both did not want to be a part of. They were afraid of being in said situation until they grew out of that fear. They were very similar is temperament to each other. Unfortunately, switching his phone off and leaving Kevin to suffer for a year is just bad writing and throws this whole theory out the window. This is why it is difficult to analyze Sam’s character and sexuality because Ross-Lemming and gang have done considerable damage in 7 years. There is only one meaningful interaction between Sam and Kevin [a church scene] and the interaction was so emotional and affectionate on Sam’s part, that Kevin actually thought Sam was hitting on him. The Sam and Kevin storyline is one of the worst fanfic tragedies because of the bad writing in canon.

Cas and Sam have an interesting story. When Sam first met Cas, he fell all over himself just to greet the guy. He was starstruck, for want of a better word. There was even an emphasis to their handshake which is perhaps one of the most intimate handshakes I have ever seen between two male actors.

It was as if he was meeting a legend. Back in Season 4, Cas kind of was. Now, not so much. The legend is dead. And Cas is a joke. Cas and Sam have various similarities. They have similar temperaments. They have messed up spectacularly in the past, and both admit to it. They both bonded over the fact that they accidentally caused major damage in the quest of trying to solve a problem. They bonded over their pain. And Cas reassured Sam that messing up and falling in Dean’s eyes is something that Sam does not alone have a monopoly in. Cas has messed up plenty. He was trying to comfort Sam. Most of the emotional heart to hearts seem to happen between Sam and Cas. Dean is usually mocking Cas and Cas is usually getting confused by Dean.

Castiel’s dialogue either to or regarding Sam:

Nothing is worth losing you.

The only person who has screwed up things more consistently than you, is me.

You wont take Sam Winchester. I won’t let you.

You come near Sam Winchester, and I will kill you.

I was lost until I took your pain.

The idea of Samstiel and Sastiel highly amused Sam. In fact, I have very seldom seen Sam so enthusiastic about something. Remember nobody pointed out that there was a pairing between him and Cas. He did that on his own, and didn’t appear repulsed by the idea of him and Cas together. Dean on the other hand, is repulsed by any mention of fan fiction, even going so far as to break the fourth wall and glare at the guilty party when destiel is mentioned for the first and hopefully last time on Supernatural.

Now Sam and Cas even share a child, and I think that is bringing them closer. Unfortunately, Misha oversells the stupid dinghy destiel and leaves a more promising ship behind because he over-pandered to his lunatic fandom. And giving into Sastiel made make them go full psycho. Which is a terrible sign of his stupidity because if there is any slash pairing that makes any canonical sense, it is sastiel. Destiel appears more like an arranged marriage for a green card. Everything is forced on Castiel’s part and faked on Dean’s part, because both actors involved has different point of views regarding destiel and slash fiction.

In conclusion, the only lingering indication of Sam’s supposed bi/pansexuality seems to be his interaction with Cas. Even then, it is just an analysis and not canon. And it is just my overall analysis, which I am sure, is limited. I don’t know of any other subtext with regards to Sam’s sexuality. If anyone out there has a proper example, kindly comment. I would like to know what is construed as bisexual Sam subtext.

in my opinion michael is the high key bisexual and david the low key. michael has even admitted that his first crush was on a man and is constantly complimenting (and honestly, thirsting would be the correct word) over other men jdjdjjdjs

Hah…I am absolutely with you there, Anon! I originally used a tag about a month ago that said exactly that (#david is lowkey bi and michael is highkey bi), but then I switched it the other day because I kept going back and forth about it in my mind.

As you mentioned, Michael has been quite vocal about his attraction to men, such as his first crush on John Taylor of Duran Duran, his description of Tom Jones in his 1960s heyday as “sexy,” talking about being sexually attracted to several members of the Manic Street Preachers back in the day. …and of course, the seemingly endless number of flagrant instances of his thirst for David–one of the most flagrant being a video of him talking about David’s hips (essentially telling us that Michael has not only checked out David and looked at his hips, but has looked at them long enough to classify them as “slinky”).

David, by contrast, tends to play things more coy. He isn’t as expressive as Michael is with words, preferring to allude to what he wants with his body/body language instead. He’s had no compunction about kissing men (John Barrowman, John Bishop) with hardly any pretext involved, or about being the object of desire for men (Michael - and this is only one example out of about a zillion). But when it comes to conveying his own attraction, he’s more subtle about it, drawing the person he wants to him and making them do all the work so he can simply lie back and enjoy the attention.

But sexuality is, as we know, quite a spectrum, and I think what it comes down to is that both Michael and David are fluid in their bisexuality and the expression of that bisexuality–meaning that they have been and can be both highkey and lowkey about it depending on contexts, the person, and many other factors. Which is really what makes them such interesting and multidimensional people, and so hot to watch.So thanks for writing in, Anon!
