Monika has known about Mewtwo beforehand due to her connections to Team Rocket, and was inspired by him to live on

Mewtwo finds himself in love with Monika eventually and the two begin a romantic relationship

This eventually falls apart for a few years during Monika's later teenage years, as the two lacked experience in serious relationships

Mewtwo spent a few years by himself in self-discovery, making new friends in the process

Later reunites with Monika during her travels in Kalos, rekindling their romance

Eventually starts a family

Fuji is inspired by her cultural heritage and the exploration of how one carries on tradition through generations of living abroad. She is fascinated by traditional Japanese mythology and folklore, and expands on these themes within the context of her own experiences of being an issei (first generation) woman in the United States. A recurring theme in her work is the exploration of what creates our sense of identity, and how that can shift over ones life. note: this was an ask sent in by a former mutual that I drafted & half responded to but never got around to posting. since the asker is no longer a mutual I won't be posting the ask on its own but I didn't want to let this juicy hc slip away so I'm just answering it in a separate post.

Mewtwo has a love/hate relationship with science.

while he definitely does things that would label him a "scientist" of sorts, Mewtwo would consider it an insult or even something of a slur to be called one, as a product of science himself who obviously has some significant trauma and identity issues as a result of his creation by science and those who practice it (read: humans). in fact he considers the word ‘scientist’ a term strictly to describe humans, because it's a 'dirty' and loaded word to him. he wouldn't call himself a scientist (even if the term might fit); he prefers 'researcher' or 'intellectual' - anything else other than 'scientist'.

still, both in spite of and because of his undeniable connection to the scientific field, Mewtwo is also inevitably drawn to and has a natural aptitude for it, as evidenced by his quick mastery and perfection of the cloning process by which he himself was created. he avidly reads and seeks out information about it including new discoveries, keeping up to date on progress while making his own, occasionally experimenting in order to do so.

when a sapient biological component is needed for such things, Mewtwo experiments on himself. he would never hurt or experiment on another Pokémon without their consent (and even then he probably wouldn’t unless it was a dire life or death kind of thing).

however… I can see situations where he might be willing to experiment on or hurt humans for knowledge or other scientific reasons, although such scenarios usually require said human to either be a personal adversary or that his reasons for doing so be incredibly important to him and worth the “moral damage” of such a deed. as much as I’d like to say he wouldn’t go all ‘mad scientist’ or whatever in the pursuit of knowledge or personal goals, Mewtwo has a habit of finding excuses to be worse than he wants to be…

ironically the one use he really would have for human experimentation is for the same reason that kickstarted his own creation - bringing back someone who's dead. and wouldn't you know, it's the same person Dr. Fuji wanted to bring back! :)
