Free! the Final Stroke - Budapest pilgrimage part 1

After being in love with Free! for 10 years now and visiting Iwami 3x already (soon it will be the 4th time) - you cannot imagine how surreal it felt when I heard about the Budapest part when the movie was released last year. Thanks to @fencer-x who confirmed many details and directed me to Japanese Twitter users (39_Free and Ladyoscar_1990) who actually found the exact location of the HaruRin train crossing and the little shop where Rin met Ai - I could visit the places quite quickly, living in Budapest myself. This particular post focuses on Makoto’s parts - Keleti Railway Station (I pass it 2x a day on my way to work and back), the Fisherman’s Bastion in the Castle district, the No 41 tram (they don’t use the same type of vehicle on that line anymore, so I went to Deák square to take photos of the type shown in the movie), the lower quay on the Buda side, the Chain bridge from the Pest side (it’s still under renovation and probably the red bench where Makoto and Haru sits and talks won’t be there after the reveal...) and last but not least the Parliament (photo take from the Castle district). Anyone who needs exact locations and addresses, just send me a DM!

I was super lucky with the weather - could take almost the exact same shots as were shown in the movie.

In TADC, some lines got changed between the dubs

My favourite of which is when Caine asks Bubble "why are you like this?"

According to my friend, in the Ukrainian dub, it got changed to "evolution did not have pity on you" LMAO

This particular post focuses on Rin’s and Haru’s breathtaking meeting at the railway crossing. Which is in actually the very same district I live! Újpest/4th district bordering 15th district. KyoAni again went into insane details - it is at the final stop of bus 20E and near the tram line 14 at a stop called Óceánárok - a name containing the word ‘ocean’ in a country without any sea... And there’s a stream (Szilas-patak) and a swimming pool near this location - sounds like a very Haru-thing. I’ve been to this spot many times ever since - just as I said, it is so surreal that after visiting the other side of the world 3x to see the real location of Iwatobi, I get to live near a site that has actually became part of the Free! universe.

I think one of my favorite things about Codywan is that it absolutely could be canon and wouldn’t disrupt the established timeline. I mean, a ship doesn’t have to be canon compliant to mean something but for me, personally, I so rarely fall for pairs that are possible that when I do it’s like, a little extra special.

And as someone who loves angst + hurt / comfort, codywan in canon would obviously be filled to the brim with both in order to maintain established canon. For example, Cody obviously isn’t in A New Hope, but with the clones accelerated aging that could easily be a sad but canon compliant reason why he’s not. Or in rebels, Rex mentions he believes Obi-Wan to be dead, and he talks about Cody as if he’s no longer around. That could be because Cody and Obi-Wan are hiding out together on Tattooine, just like the original draft of the Kenobi script.

Does this make sense? Do I think Lucasfilm would ever go for this? No. But do I think if they wanted to they could do so very, very easily and it would fit right into canon, like it always belonged? Yes.

went a whole agonizing week of no coffee caffine just for my streak to be broken because a family member made regular coffee in the pot and told me it was decaff. it was in fact not decaff

(also i promise I'm working on stuff and chapters and art, im just super busy right now preparing for the con and dealing other life stuff lskdghlksdhgs. hold out for arts n stuff soon)
