Pleased to receive the Tenth Anniversary Expanded Edition of Jesse Graves’s first book “Tennessee Landscape with Plighted Pine.” I can remember finding a copy of this in a bookstore before I knew much about local, or even regional, literature and it came as a revelation to me that there might be a living poet who talked about the places around me, let alone someone who addressed contemporary concerns. I’ve since had my eyes opened to the huge amount of literature in the region, but seeing “Blighted Pine” in the title came as a surprise to me back then. This expanded edition comes with comments from a host of fine authors, such as Robert Morgan, Rita Sims Quillen, Fred Chappell, Jeff Daniel Marion, and Ron Rash. Read this one; Chappell is a master. Somehow this poem doesn’t feel repetitive or forced, and each return to the repeated lines feels fresh. I have found it difficult to read through Ol’ Fred’s “Midquest,” but individual poems like this remind me of his power. I know this is a bit late for Halloween (when do the Christmas posts start?), but this arrived in the mail yesterday so I’ll go ahead and post it now. This is a chapbook of Chappell’s #worldfantasyaward winning short story ‘The Lodger.’ Largely influenced by H. P. Lovecraft’s work, the awards honored him by holding their inaugural ceremony in his hometown and for many years mirroring their trophy after his likeness. I read this collection of stories last semester and came away wanting more. It follows a boy named Jess as he listens to his mother and grandmother tell stories of the important and mysterious women who shaped their lives. Deep landscapes full of the seemingly ordinary lives of strong and powerful mountain women. If your interested in reading about the lives of women in Appalachia after WW2, this book is wonderfully written, or just looking for another book which will stand up to as much or little interpretation as you want, this one is my recommendation. My friend @alancornett sent me an amazing gift! This is a hand printed broadside of a poem written by Fred Chappell for Jim Wayne Miller. Miller, often seen as the father of Appalachian Studies, passed away the previous year. Chappell, a dean in the field of App Studies himself and fellow poet, penned this after Miller's death in 1996. It is difficult to consider how the field might look without these two individuals and their great work both academically and creativly, and to have this piece is truly special.
