So pleased to find this under the tree this year. Rare as a hardback, Jim Wayne Miller’s third full length book is probably his most influential and ends with his famous “Brier Sermon” poem. Miller signed this book to Nancy Carol Joyner, a prominent Southern and Appalachian literary scholar. Former president of SAMLA, she also put together the influential “Bloodroot: Reflections on Place by Appalachian Women Writers.” Pleased to find this association copy, and always glad to add to the Miller collection. I have always loved old books. From the smell and touch of the rough pages, to the ways the phrases sound and flow, everything about them excites me.

However nothing excites me more than the artwork. Hand drawn and painted it always feels like you can catch a glimpse of the artists soul in the linework.

I always wanted to learn how to draw like that.

Quite a few years ago I came across the blog of the artist James Gurney, the author and illustrator of Dinotopia, and he mentioned something called “The Famous Artists School”.

The “Famous Artists School” it turns out is a correspondence course founded in 1948 by a number of well known artists of the era including Albert Dorne and Normal Rockwell. It was a $200 course of 24 lessons, which adjusted for inflation would make it around $2500 in todays prices. The artists school had an artists course, a painting course, and a cartooning course.

The goal claimed to be to get you to the point of being a working artist by the end of the course if not before. It reminds me of the coding bootcamps of today but art.

The student would read the lessons, practice the exercises and send in the assignments at the end of the lessons when they were ready to move on to the next one. After it was sent in the assignment would be looked at and critiqued by professional artists on staff and then returned to the students with critiques and improvement suggestions.

Now obviously this course is and was not a magic pill to make you be an artist with no effort on your part. Nothing works like that. But it is instructional and gives an insight into the art career as it was like back then . It also was a course I have heard multiple artists mention in a positive light. And so I wanted to try it.

The problem was I really wanted to try the 1950s course and obviously it was not the 1950s which made it harder to find. When I did find complete sets they were far out of my price range so the idea fell by the wayside.

After many years that included two difficult pregnancies, job loss, and a long non intentional break from all art at all, everything finally aligned.

Last year I found THE set. It was from 1954, it was complete, it had the assignments still included, and it even had extras. But best of all it was in my budget!

The set includes 3 binders with the 24 lessons and their assignments, a catalog of art supplies you could buy, an art term dictionary, a sales book, and a booklet on artist jobs.

I will be going through the set in my own time trying to match other courses to the lessons. For example when I do the composition lesson I will want to do other courses on composition just to bump up the learning.

I will not have any access to the critiques which is probably one of the more valuable resources but there is not that much I can do about that, my mother told me not to play with necromancy after all.

I have already done a few lessons and I surprised myself with what I was able to create.

I am very excited to go through this course both as an artist and as an old book lover. I also have a secret. I found the complete painters course too!
