Hiya, just read this about Lorde & cancelling tours. Seems like it’s more common than I thought?
https://www.nme.com/news/music/lorde-addresses-economic-realities-of-touring-things-are-at-an-almost-unprecedented-level-of-difficulty-3347062
Oh, that’s such an interesting article. Thank you so much for sending it. It does a really good job of laying out the myriad complication involved in staging a tour these days.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Basically, for artists, promoters and crews, things are at an almost unprecedented level of difficulty,” Lorde wrote in her letter, citing factors like “three years’ worth of shows” occurring simultaneously, global economic downturn, and concertgoers’ “totally understandable wariness” around health risks.
She went on to acknowledge logistical factors such as widespread crew shortages, linking to an article from New Zealand news outlet Stuff about the issue. “Extremely overbooked trucks and tour buses and venues, inflated flight and accommodation costs, ongoing general COVID costs, and truly mindboggling freight costs” were also listed as factors.
“To freight a stage set across the world can cost up to three times the pre-pandemic price right now. I don’t know shit about money, but I know enough to understand that no industry has a profit margin that high,” Lorde continued.
“Ticket prices would have to increase to start accommodating even a little of this, but absolutely no one wants to charge their harried and extremely-compassionate-and-flexible audience any more fucking money.
“Nearly every tour has been besieged with cancellations and postponements and promises and letdowns, and audiences have shown such understanding and such faith, that between that and the post-COVID wariness about getting out there at all, scaring people away by charging the true cost ain’t an option. All we want to do is play for you.”
Lorde went on to say that she’s lucky because profits being down across the board doesn’t pose an issue for an artist of her stature, but touring has become a “demented struggle to break even or face debt” for artists selling less tickets than her – which in some cases, can make touring prohibitive altogether.
[…]
She continued: “I wanted to put all of this in your minds to illustrate that nothing’s simple when it comes to touring at the moment, and if your faves are confusing you with their erratic moves, some of this could be playing a part.”

From 20K to 2K? Damn, what the fuck is going on in Asia?
I’m wondering the same thing, anon! I saw someone else mentioning this and I agree; just because it’s the only asia tour show doesn’t mean people will travel from all over asia for that show.. flights, accommodation etc. on top of buying a ticket isn’t something everyone can afford (or are willing to spend which is fair like I wasn’t even gonna see louis on the 2022 tour cause the closest shows were stockholm or berlin. and that a fairly short distance compared to coming to jakarta from another country)..
but it can’t just be that I mean for the show in jakarta in 2022 the venue had an about 4K cap. and while I don’t know if it was sold out back then this new venue is only half cap. at 2K 😐 so is it higher ticket prices that’s the problem? because it seems very strange to me that demand would have declined in asia when it’s increased hugely in both europe and the US..

After what happened yesterday I'm just thinking about belfast 2015, it had the same vibe.
Listen. Please feel free to feel whatever you're feeling, I think things have been hard lately and it's normal to feel confused and weird about it. But since you sent me this (and there are a lot of people in my inbox with similar messages), I feel the urge to tell you guys something... Belfast happened SEVEN years ago, when the boys were under extremely abusive contracts and strict clauses. I think it's absolutely unreasonable (and dismissive of what happened back then) to compare Louis' solo career now to what they had going on with the band.
Watching some of you still being stuck on the same way of thinking from 10 years ago, acting like Modest is still breathing down Louis' neck, is very mindblowing to me. Wake up, things change. And it's okay if we don't know what is happening and what changed, we can admit that. I find the entire cancellation extremely confusing, I'm very disappointed about the way things were handled and Louis' tweet... it would be wonderful if we get some further clarification, but not everything is this big mystery, not everything requires the craziest theories. I'm very tired of people going back to these same theories that look very outdated just because they need some comfort, some explanation, and most importantly, someone to blame.

why do you reckon the fitf tour north american venues are so much smaller than the european ones? ive noticed louis is playing in a lot of non-major cities (what he called “secondary markets”) so that’s part of the reason but even in the major cities like la and nyc he’s playing much smaller venues than the europe ones. do you think this was a deliberate choice? or maybe he couldn’t book bigger ones bc promoters didn’t think he could sell them?
LTHQ are absolute masters of data mining;* all the pre-Walls promo was clever little things that required us to give our locations to access it and let them see where engagement was and in what numbers and plan accordingly. So while Louis has himself said, I want to go to secondary markets because they don't always get people coming there, and there is likely an element of trying to fill in gaps from last tour a bit, some of the reason for those locations could be that they know something we don't- IE that there are people there who want a show! I assume they're still using those metrics and gathering new ones and booking him in the right size venues for whichever locations (last time they ended up being a bit small for a lot of US shows but the delays caused by the pandemic changed things a lot I think, I'm guessing they did their best with all the weird shuffling); you'll also want to take into account the fact that they will almost certainly be announcing more dates after they sell the first round of tickets tomorrow- I bet we'll get those pretty soon, like second nights in various locations. And there are a lot of US shows that are closer together than a lot of places; like in LATAM (and Europe) he'll play one show per COUNTRY you know, and here in the US they're driving casually from one to the next because they're denser (like Cincinnati and Cleveland are just a few hours drive apart). So that's one reason for smaller venues. But also, it's an outdoor arena tour! (So fun!) So I'm thinking size is perhaps not the only factor in the choices. I bet one of these cool outdoor arenas is the mysterious US venue he already has his eye on for the year after next's AFHF.... Anyway I didn't look at capacity everywhere or anything though but at least near me he is playing venues 3 to 4 times bigger than he did on Walls tour, so while they may be smaller than Europe if you're right- they are not small. Anyway while we're on the topic, did everyone see how today on the Rolling Stone stream when they said he was touring until Nov Louis looked straight into the camera and smirked and said "if that is the end"? Lmao. Anyway we should be getting the rest of the world dates soon, maybe some for before the US dates, probably some in the empty month (August) between US and Europe, and I guess definitely more after the UK too! When he said that, I was wondering if he'd do the same thing as Walls tour and go from smallest to biggest shows, starting with the US and ending with LATAM, but I guess we will see soon enough...
(*real data mining that is not stalking or whatever some people seem to think data mining is)

Louis announced his 2023 Asia dates and there are only seven of them. After all the hype about him playing India and Africa, turns out he's not even playing Indonesia, Phillipines, or Dubai like he did last time.
Louis' Asian Concerts by Capacity
Taipai Exhibition Center - 3k capacity
Singapore Star Theatre - 3k capacity
Nagoya Century Hall - 3k capacity
Plenary Hall Kuala Lumpur - 3k capacity
Tokyo Garden Theater - 8k capacity
Bangkok - 11k
Osaka - 10k
So much for the mighty arena tour! Those 3k venues won't generate any profit once he's paid to fly everyone out there.

Heyy when do you think AUS, NZ, and Asia dates will be announced ?
Heyy!
I'm thinking he'll do Aus, NZ, Asia after UK/Europe and he's finishing that mid November; probably a little break after that so maybe starting December and moving well into 2024. Especially if he's gonna be making it as widespread as possible (like UK/EU) covering a load of "secondary" markets like he said.
obvs I don't know for sure 😅

Just a response to your anon who asked about the cancellation. There is a website called soundcloud*com that writes about the music business. They have an article breaking down the intricacies of a tour. Very complicated. After reading it, I came to the conclusion that livenation Asia signed up the tour last minute hence the late announcement and that livenation Asia didn’t really invest in any significant effort in promoting it (probably thought it would be easy money) and when they realized they were not going to be able to make a good profit after expenses, they pulled the plug. Hence why we got the cancellation announcements first from livenation Asia and why it was not directly addressed by Louis. He likely was not able to say anything and probably didn’t want to burn bridges with livenation Asia. Not satisfying for fans. And to be clear livenation and livenation Asia are two separate entities, so just because livenation was doing the tour in the USA doesn’t mean that livenation Asia would automatically do it. Livenation had acquired an Asian tour promoter to become livenation Asia.
That's super helpful, love. Thank you so much. We figured it had something to do with not selling enough tickets or covering the costs. Dod you mind sending me the link?

i kinda get why the show was moved to a smaller venue, tickets are not affordable at all, the same thing is happening in latin america like fans have been giving away tickets to other fans because most of us can't afford them and it's the same reason why he hasn't sold out any shows here yet :(
well he doesn’t need to sell out every show to make enough of a profit for the tour to be economically sustainable. but he does of course need to sell a certain percentage and it seems that just isn’t possible rn in some markets. it’s probably at least in part due to higher ticket prices than the last tour (again because of higher costs of touring compared to 2019/20 when most of the tickets for the first tour was sold) and then combined with many people being hit by the higher cost of living and not being able to spend that much on concert ticket (+ travel). and we know louis has done what he could to keep ticket prices as low as possible, he did for the first tour. so it’s hard to see how this issue can be solved unless there’s a shift in the entire global economic situation. it sucks but it’s a reality louis and his team has no power to change

The way it has been over a week and Louis hasn't said anything about the canceled tour
I loved how he was chatty on twitter yesterday, it always lifts my mood when he just comes online to chat with us, it's so sweet of him. But yeah... it's a big elephant in the room, I'm sure he saw MANY questions about that yesterday and avoided them. So I think it's pretty clear by now that we're not getting any further explanation for now, for whatever reason.

I know Louis' your fave so I hope it's okay that I send you this. But recently the blinkers have been coming off for me in regards to Louis. I think I used to have him up on a bit of a pedestal. I just thought he was this really intelligent guy, really aware of social issues and willing to fight for the right thing and be rebellious when necessary. I don't know. I saw things playing out very differently. But unfortunately, lately, I've been seeing a lot of laziness and complacency and a willingness to settle from him. A lot of contradictions as well. Like he gets the anarchist symbol tattooed but doesn't speak out or place his support behind anything substantial. I'm sorry, legalizing weed is his most political stance. And then being seen with the Starbucks cup and actually covering it in the video like lmao. Not knowing what number year your festival is when he supposedly had big dreams for it. I know this is so small but it irks me that he's been going on about playing the guitar for years. And he is yet to bring it on stage for even one song! I know it comes from a place of self-doubt and insecurity no matter how confident he makes himself appear but like he just doesn't help himself. And fans exaggerating and praising every little thing he does as if he isn't just some basic white man does my head in. Sorry I word vomited on you and I know this sounds harsh but I acknowledge it comes from a bitter place where I feel like his potential is just not being met. At the end it's his life and I genuinely hope he doesn't have many regrets later on.
hi babe
I think I am completely in the same situation as you! I might not be triggered by exactly the same things but I’ve been going over and over it for the last couple days asking myself why I’m so annoyed with him right now?? And I think it really is just the disappointment finding out your fave man is after all, just a man.
Like, to me, it feels like he’s been stagnant since early 2023. right now, to me it feels like he’s just on the hunt for the cheap thrill, getting the validation in that he also can pull massive crowds of screaming girls just like he did during 1D (and it isn’t even the actual validation he’s looking for??? Like he still starts yapping every time a man validates him as if it’s so much more important??)
I feel like he lost focus, or energy, or both. You know, you said it!! You know I love Louis to death, he’s my favourite, and genuinely, I don’t blame him. It makes a lot of sense to me. He’s finally proven himself to not be a flop to all the people doubting him. He’s overcome all the obstacles, did LTWT and had massive success with it, way beyond anyone expected, rode that wave, made a second album that proved he’s not a one hit wonder either, an album he actually enjoyed making, and proved his fans liked it, too. And then… it just kind of stagnated. His team made mistakes and miscalculations. Announcing Asia tour so short notice thinking, then cancelling bc it didn’t sell out, handling the announcements horribly, not realising LTWT was massive bc of all the pent up excitement and desire throughout years of a pandemic, the magnetism of it being the first solo world tour. They also didn’t get it when it came to Milano Summer fest vs. AFHF. The 35k sold out bc it was announced many months in advance and it was the last LTWT show - that’s meaningful to fans. It was easily accessible. You can’t translate just the numbers to „it’s bc he’s popular in Italy,“ there’s so many factors at play they ignored, and therefore AFHF Italy only sold 2/3 of tickets, and a lot of these people didn’t even show up (couldn’t, I better say).
For me, FITF felt like he had checked out a little. He’s plateauing. The excitement and irresistible draw he has is largely due to his resilience, his underdog persona he created that allows normal people to identify with him. And there just wasn’t any… growth since early 2023. He‘s also alienated a large part of his fandom with the bbg pushes, and as you know, I still believe it was all part of the bigger plan to end it, but it does feel like he gave up, got comfortable. And it’s not that I blame him for it necessarily?? Like all he’s been through? It makes a lot of sense to me that now he’s achieved all the things people told him he wouldn’t be able to achieve, that now the burn out sets in, that now, the driving energy of spite and wanting to prove himself has run out.
I feel like the jokes of “oh I’m a pothead I can’t remember if it’s the third or fourth edition of my super duper important close to my heart festival project” or “oh yeah sometimes I forget I’m an actual parent and have a kid” are getting old. Like, it doesn’t serve him anymore it feels like? To me it feels like the weed was a coping mechanism that helped him get through hard times, and that’s completely valid, but now it looks like to me it’s holding him back, blurring his genius.
I’m sorry for the rant back to you. I’m deeply upset because Louis is my escape, my happy place, fandom is my comfort, and I feel like it’s slipping through my fingers because it causes me more upset than happiness at this point. The amount of “kill yourself” messages I have gotten over criticising louis for announcing AFHF so short notice is frankly INSANE. Do people not talk to other people in real life?? How do the people around these people that send those messages deal with them in real life?? It’s so upsetting to see how many people feel comfortable typing out these kind of messages and sending them.
I do hope this feeling of mine calms down, and I can go back to just glorifying louis and have him as my comfort place, because I do not like the thoughts I have and the way it makes me feel.

ok so to recap LTHQ posted a presave link to ????, then a link to "JOIN IN" that leads to a map of 170 hotspots worldwide; most of the hotspots are at venues Louis played (both tours) plus a few for countries he wasn't able to play yet; the hotspot links will reveal 15 puzzle pieces to fill in a square. They are each open for two hours, mostly midday local time (except the Asia/Oceania ones in the evening and all the North America ones being at the same time to make it a little less drastically staggered); the first ones open in about 10 hours. Later the hotspots disappeared leaving the map blank. It appears there is an app you can download; I am guessing you go to the location and the app will then unlock a puzzle piece for you. Someone got into some part of a site early temporarily and saw a short video (tour footage and Louis talking about tour); reminiscent of the Two Of Us hotspots like this which unlocked video clips. ANYWAY FITF LIVE ALBUM IS COMING HELL YEAH and the puzzle pieces will surely be the cover reveal imo (or tracklist/both?... but now there are also video clips in the mix)*, the last hour has been a busy week for us etc

Louies' 2023 Wrapped Tag Game
(Rules: Answer the questions below and tag at least 3 people!)
Thank you bestie @berlinini for tagging me 🤍 sorry i’m so late on this, work’s been kicking my ass, here we go though!
favorite walls song: this year; don’t let it break your heart
favorite fitf song: impossible to pick just one but right now; holding on to heartache (which is funny considering my fav off of Walls this year)
most played song on Spotify by Louis: Written All Over Your Face (ok whore)
Tumblr media
favorite louis lyrics: that’s actually an impossible task because there’s WAY too many! but “there’s endless versions of the thing that keeps me drifting back to darkness” hits home in a way that i can’t explain in words
louis life lesson: it always remains the same; picking yourself back up after facing hardships, seeing the possibilities and positives in a difficult situation; basically strength & resilience
favorite louis outfit: oh that’s unfair, my little fashionista kills it 99% of the time so i have a list of favorite 50 outfits from 2023 but for the purpose of this game we’ll narrow it down to three (and it’s not even top three just three that i loved)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
favorite tour show: there were so many good ones this year (Phoenix, Austin, Houston, LA, Philly, New York, Bologna, Paris, Antwerp, Vienna, Łódź, Sheffield, Cardiff, London) but the way that I felt physically ill after fitfwt: Columbus might need to be studied for science; the whiplash from the stark difference of him during the show and him post show was entirely TOO MUCH
Tumblr media Tumblr media
favorite public appearance: has to be the RS Awards; the slutty custom-made fit, the main character energy throughout, the confidence, the glow, the ever present eloquence with which he spoke about his work and his successful af year, just him him him <3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
favorite AOTV scene: once again there’s so many; that scene where louis’ recording Saturdays and we get some insight into his thinking and his process, the montage of louis with band and crew having an absolute blast while All This Time plays in the background, that one scene where JD is helping him put his hoodie on after he broke his elbow 👀 the last few minutes of the movie where we hear him say the words “i do feel like i deserve this” 🫶🏽🥹 and so so many more actually
favorite band or crew member: favorite three :p are Krystle, Steve & Joshua! special shout out to Joshua for going above and beyond this year honestly! that man carried lthq on his back!
favorite picture: another unfair question but i won’t cheat and post one of my absolute most favorites from this year because it’s like the energy of his shows captured in one moment (i found out on twitter that the hand in his hair belongs to a desi louie which was like the cherry on top)
Tumblr media
something that you are looking forward to in 2024: the fitfwt latam shows!!! there is nothing else like the energy the latam crowds bring, which in turn brings out the absolute best (and most unhinged) in louis and his band too, so definitely looking forward to that! and the festivals!!! can’t wait to see him shine in front of the world <3 hope against hope to be a part of it if things work out 🤞🏽🕯️
one wish for Louis (or Louies) for 2024: 🍑🐧🎧 sighting! kidding (not really)! honestly though, growth
growth in this fandom’s level of maturity (with the addition of lots more people who are here for louis’ art and not his personal life), growth in the markets he’s able to capture, growth in the places he’s able and willing to tour *cough*ASIA*cough*, growth in the ability of his teams especially his social media and PR teams, growth from Louis himself in regards to him being open to trying new things
i don’t know who all has done this! but i’ll tag some people just in case (no pressure) @noraincsl @timidlouie @poekitty2020 @stormyhale @louveyous
