Vessel detected: Alien ships in Star Trek: Part 3
By Ames
Tumblr media
We’ve looked at Klingon ships and Romulan ships in the past weeks, but there are so many other aliens flying around in Star Trek. So many, in fact, that there’s no way A Star to Steer Her By is going to cover them all, so I’m going to try to keep the list focused on aliens whom we see a lot or who are otherwise noteworthy or whom I just like for my own dubious reasons. So if you don’t see your favorite one-off alien ship, bring it up with the continuum.
We’re starting off with just the couple of alien ships we saw in The Original Series and then blasting through some of the highlights from The Next Generation. We’ve got warp drive online, so keep up with all our allies and enemies below and listen to our discussion on this week’s podcast episode (discussion starts at 1:06:59). Engage!

Tumblr media
First Federation Fesarius
One of the first alien ships we get to see in all of Trek is also one of the most unique. The design of Balok’s First Federation ship is truly alien and that is impressive for so early a ship design. The sphere made up of other spheres is so ornate and intricate that we just wanna disco dance under it, and the beautiful gold color is nice whether remastered or in its original form! Pass the tranya!
Tumblr media
Gorn Ship
We may only catch flashes of the Gorn ship in “Arena,” but the remaster and subsequent model designs provide for a nifty vessel that looks like it’s built for speed and maneuverability. Those wings look like they’re reaching out threateningly toward you, and the compact four-nacelle configuration should make the Stargazer feel ashamed of herself.
Tumblr media
Ferengi D’Kora class
That’s all I put together from TOS since there just weren’t that many ships to speak of, so let’s see what’s out there in the TNG series, starting with the dreaded Ferengi! While the Ferengi themselves are just laughing stocks, their ships are actually really neat to look at (once you figure out which side is the front and which is the back). The horseshoe crab shape lends for some nice curves and no discernable nacelles, which is a nice change of pace, and the red-orange color is something we don’t see a lot of either!
Tumblr media
Pakled Mondor class ship, et al
One of the most reused designs we’re going to see across Trek of the 90s is the Pakled ship: a very basic wedge design with lots of various Swiss army–knife tools all over it. Ex Astris Scientia put together a collection of just how many times we see this resilient little doorstop of a ship, and if you think about it as something a lot of different races would just purchase wholesale off the lot, it makes a lot of sense why you’d see it so much!
Tumblr media
Husnock warship, et al
Even more than the Pakled ship, we see the Husnock ship absolutely everywhere during this time period. Ex Astris Scientia counts its sighting in 22 different redresses of this rectangular giftbox in space. The shape of it is quite dull – so dull that most people may not even notice we see it practically every other week in the Alpha Quadrant. Good work to this little prism: the most ubiquitous ship in the galaxy!
Tumblr media
Miradorn raider
Arctus Baran’s ship that we see in “Gambit,” on the other hand, gives us another new and very pointy shape to look at! We’ll see a little more of it in Deep Space Nine as a Miradorn raider, but its debut as the funky little ship of pirates and goons is actually quite perfect. The Fortune just looks scrappy and sharp, and a little like a space invader design to boot!
Tumblr media
Borg Cube
There’s a lot to be said about the simple design of a cube that gets across that the Borg is an incomparable force. First off, their ships are huge, which gives them the intimidation factor. The geometrical shape is so out of place for a ship that the wrongness of it is also alarming. And finally the texture! These things are constructed out of so much STUFF and yet so obsessively organized to keep to that cube shape that you know you are literally rolling the dice with your lives just to be in its presence.
Tumblr media
Borg Renegade Ship
Another Borg ship we see is that of Hugh and his fellow renegades from “Descent,” and their ship breaks that clean, beautiful cube simplicity by going for an entirely asymmetrical, chaotic shape. It’s still got the normal Borg texture that is clearly made up of all the different other vessels that were assimilated, broken into their parts, and put back together. But the almost haphazard wings of the ship are closer to the corridors of a building than of a ship. It just looks like a pair of arms preparing for a boxing match! Them’s fighting words!
Tumblr media
Borg Sphere
If you were more into geometrical shapes from our borgified friends, then First Contact has something for you: check out the Borg Sphere! The Borg Queen sure can travel in style! Like Balok’s ship we took a look at earlier, the sphere is much more than just a ball. Creating a perfect sphere out of hunks of metal is so like those anal-retentive Borg, isn’t it? Polygons are futile!
Tumblr media
Vulcan T’Plana-Hath
The other major ship that comes out of First Contact is the Vulcan ship that does that actual first contacting! It’s an interesting shape and looks kind of like some kind of water sprinkler device you’d set up in the backyard. Its three-prong shape is a new design for alien ships, and the landing gear is straight out of sci-fi shows about abductions and crop circles. Is it logical? Debatable.
Tumblr media
Son’a command ship
One more TNG movie’s worth of alien ships: let’s feature the ships of the Son’a. Say what you will about these blokes’ faces, but their ship aesthetics are pretty phenomenal! Their beautiful command ship is like a literal set of angel wings and just about as heavenly. The winged look of this ship is sleek and shiny in its chrome-looking silver. It’s no wonder it houses one of our favorite captain’s chairs from the franchise!
Tumblr media
Son’a battleship
Another ship from our plastic bag–faced friends is their battleship, which looks like a deadlier version of a boomerang while also definitely coming from the same collection as the command ship. The detailing has that pretty and swooping angelic quality while the shape looks much faster and sharper. I’d hand over the fountain of youth to these things before I fought them, that’s for sure.
Tumblr media
Son’a collector
Finally, the pièce de résistance of this collection: the collector ship, which looks like an unassuming jetski splashing around in space until it unfolds into a truly beautiful stellar butterfly. The sails on this beauty queen are so glitzy and golden that it might just be sprinkling us with fairy dust… as it sucks the metaphasic particles out of the atmosphere. But really, could you think of a lovelier death sentence to a planet of people?
That’s all I’ve got for you this week, obviously skipping a ton of ships from the shows for the sake of time and sanity. Shout out any of your favorites I’ve missed because we’re hitting the gas on our way to Deep Space Nine next week! Also be sure to keep listening to our coverage of all of Voyager on SoundCloud or wherever you get your podcasts, hail us on Facebook and Twitter, and catch a breeze with those Son’a sails!

Let's briefly talk about this scene.
Tumblr media
It starts with Anakin lamenting how the Clone War corrupted the Jedi and the principles of the Republic.
Now, Padmé thinks she and Anakin are talking about the same thing: this war is corrupting the Jedi and the principles of the Republic and Palpatine doesn't seem to want to put an end to it, instead increasingly amassing power.
Tumblr media
She asks Anakin to get Palpatine to cease the fighting and let diplomacy resume. And Anakin. Gets. Triggered.
Tumblr media
Why?
Well, firstly... it's because they weren't talking about the same thing.
Tumblr media
1. What Anakin really means when talking about "the principles of the Republic".
While Anakin may say that he's concerned for the corruption of the Jedi Code and the principles of the Republic... he isn't really.
Anakin has a track record of saying he supports abstract principles and concepts, then complaining when standing by that hurts him.
Like when he'll preach that wartime forces him to make hard choices, duty over emotion...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
... but then gets mad when someone else makes the hard choice in doing their duty, and it hits close to home.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's this line Matthew Stover wrote in the ROTS novelization, which I think is very relevant:
“I think," Obi-Wan said carefully, "that abstractions like peace don't mean much to him. He's loyal to people, not to principles. And he expects loyalty in return. He will stop at nothing to save me, for example, because he thinks I would do the same for him.”
Anakin isn't about abstractions like "peace", "duty" or "democracy". He'll say he is, because he knows he should be, in theory... but, in practice, he's more loyal to people than to principles.
And right now, he's very loyal to Palpatine. Arguably more than anyone else. No matter how blatantly he acts like a dictator, Anakin stays on his side.
So whenever he uses the words "Senate" and "Republic", what he means is "Palpatine". To him, they're one and the same.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He loves Palpatine very much but the two other people he loves, Padmé and Obi-Wan, are both telling him Palpatine's bad news.
Which brings us to the second reason he gets triggered...
Tumblr media
2. He's under an enormous amount of stress.
Tumblr media
He's barely had any sleep since his nightmare about Padmé and is now scared at the prospect of losing her like he lost his mother.
He's been on an emotional roller-coaster with the Council, first being put on the Council, but not as a Master, then being given a mission but it's a mission to spy on a mentor and father figure. Now he's not even sure the Jedi trust him and he's not even sure they should, after his outburst.
Also Padmé herself is asking him to tell Palpatine to stop, criticizing the Chancellor just like the Jedi do.
It's understandable that he's on edge. That said... a huge chunk of this stress isn't Padmé or the Council's fault. It has been manufactured by Palpatine.
He appointed Anakin to be his representative on the Council specifically because he knew it would put Anakin under pressure... pressure he can exploit for his own gain.
Tumblr media
That's what Palpatine does. He orchestrates pressure then swoops in, in the guise of a savior.
With the Republic, he does this by engineering a war then bringing about order (to the chaos he caused) as an Emperor.
With Anakin, he does this by engineering conflict between him and his family - Padmé, Obi-Wan, the Jedi - then presenting himself before Anakin as the solution to all his problems.
From that point on, he enables the Republic and Anakin to give in to the worse parts of themselves and implode.
The former goes from being a democracy to a dictatorship, the latter goes from being a sweet kid to a bad man.

no ok because forevers solo mission into the nether and all the vague ‘if I don’t return’ and ‘I’m sorry’ messages he’s left behind is made all the more heart wrenching because he wasn’t meant to be the martyr.
bad has been setting himself up for tragedy. it’s in the self destructive choices he makes, his hyper paranoia, his self isolation, the way he’s literally turning blue and can’t seem to notice it himself. and from a meta perspective, it’s obvious - he talks about lasting consequences, he makes very clear framing and music decisions, the story arc has been setting up for something big. he’s got a book that says it’s for forever’s eyes only and hinted at him needing his help. he’s said to tina that he’s 100% sure of one person ending up dead at the end of all this. he’s made it clear he’d do anything he thinks would get the kids back - self sacrifice included.
it’s been an anxious build up as bad gets worse and worse. as his friends pick up clues and notice. bagi says she knows that bad lies and can cause havoc, but she’s not going to leave his side because he is too sad to be left alone. foolish takes note of his color blindness before anyone else. forever demands his time and reassures bad daily that he is there for him. gives him a flower every day. makes an entire party just showing how much bad is cared for and loved. keeps talking and visiting even when he’s ripping out his hair with annoyance because bad just won’t quit being a nuisance, or argumentative, or a probable kidnapper.
it feels like love and doomed endings. it feels like a build up to something tragic. it feels like trying to save a drowning man who won’t let anyone pull him up. because bad is ready to work for the feds, torture people, burn down anything in his way, sacrifice himself in his desperation and grief.
but now its forever who’s gone and decided any danger to himself is worth it for his son. who’s left behind vague goodbyes and see you soons, unsure if he’ll survive but set on the kids surviving at the very least. he’s already decided his death is worth it.
and while it’s not a surprise, it’s enough of a script flip to punch us all in the gut. because we expected tragedy, we expected uneasy goodbyes and self destructive choices and that effect felt across the island - but we didn’t expect it to be forever.
and neither did bad - who relied on that flower every day

it kinda bothers me when people say that tubbo snitched, because that's not what happened
Cucurucho came up to Tubbo while he was building and gave him a book with instructions that he had to go get any illegal items Ramon was in possession of and give them back to Cucurucho after, offering a grappling hook and 5 duck coins for his help
Tubbo asked if he could say no or what would happen if he just didn't, and Cucurucho pulled out a gun. Tubbo then asked if he even had a choice, and Cucurucho said no. Then he asked why Cucurucho couldn't just do it themself and it just laughed, so then Tubbo gave in and went to go get them.
Tubbo then removed the Blazecakes, but realized that also got rid of what was powering them so he just placed them back (which might have consequences in the future) and checked out other areas because of the instructions
Tubbo did not want to do this, but he did anyways because his life was being threatened the second time in two days. He also mentioned (i think?) that he didn't want to get ramon in trouble with cucurucho because he cares about Ramon
He also said that he will absolutely tell Ramon what he did, because he is not two faced
So TL;DR: Tubbo didn't snitch, Cucurucho already knew about the illegal items, he just used Tubbo as a way to get rid of them because Ramon clearly trusts Tubbo and Cucurucho hates when people are happy (the last part is /hj)

one of the most frustrating things to me with the mapleshade/birchfall situation is its like. the only time since into the wild where the books acknowledge queens don't have to reveal the fathers of their litters. when mapleshade tells beetail (? the deputy whats-his-face) shell be raising the kittens alone, he accepts it without question. this implies her lying about birchface being the father was unnecessary, but in Bluestar’s prophecy everybody immediately assumes thrushpelt is the father the minute bluefur is known to be pregnant, and bluefur not correcting this is treated as a reasonable decision despite it being the SAME situation! it's just the authors want mapleshade to be unreasonable so this time it's bad actually.
The in-universe Queen's Rights are so poorly defined and utilized that the BB!Queen's Rights are essentially an entirely original framework. They sometimes exist in the books and sometimes don't, depending on if the writer remembers them or not.
They actually seem to not be a thing in Bluestar's Prophecy, from what I remember. Thrushpelt offers to be the pretend-father as a result.
It seems to have protected Fallowtail though, until Reedfeather decided to kidnap his kids.
Featherstorm's first litter, Raggedpelt and Scorchwind, are bullied for being fatherless and face constant speculation.
Same with Flintfang, Blackstar, and Fernshade. They're not even actually halfclan, Blackpaw holds his tongue and refuses to reveal the truth to stop bullies.
Brokenstar faces open bullying from his adopted siblings for not knowing who his mother is (but also he stops Yellowfang from telling Lizardstripe about it because he overheard a conversation where she told her friend she feels like the baby is stealing milk)
StarClan pushed for Squilf to lie to Brambleclaw for this reason, because they assumed (correctly) that having HalfClan suspicion would make it harder for The Three to be accepted into ThunderClan
So if a queen has "a right" to not reveal parents, it's not very protective. Your kids are going to face bullying and discrimination regardless of how loyal you actually are, or who the dad is.
But yeah suuuure Mapleshade was evil and horrible for not correcting Frecklewish. I can totally accept that in this completely arbitrary situation that somehow it would have turned out better if she told her No and left the whole Clan speculating.

@mcytblrholidayexchange gift for @irrealisms !! you had lots of prompt ideas for writing, but not for art, so i hope you're happy with eclipse federation misery and agony compilation, plus song lyrics
lyric credits: Temporary - Chase Petra / Stranger - The Mechanisms / Easier - The Crane Wives (appears four times) / Two Birds - Regina Spektor / Little Soldiers - The Crane Wives (appears twice) / Heretic Pride - The Mountain Goats
feel free to ask if you want me to adjust some text to make it more readable or something, i think it looks fine but i know different peoples eyes and devices are different, and if i had more time i would definitely have spent more time messing with the colors on everything
speaking. of time. im really sorry i took so long ._. i kind of suck at estimating how long projects will take and how much time i have. thanks for being so patient!!
oh, also, some lyrics and drawings have story reasons for being grouped together, and some went where they looked good. uh. ideally id make sure everything had reason for its location, but this is one area where i did correctly estimate my time, instead of getting stuck in the planning phase.
also in the process of typing all this ive already gone back twice to change stuff in the images and re-add them to the post lol
OH also!! the part where vitalasy jumps off to his death! is as far as i can tell NOT canon accurate!! all the footage shows him jumping off the prison, since thats where he respawns. i didnt think to check this until after id already drawn most of the stuff, and already had the prison drawn, and i didnt want to reorganize the drawing. im telling myself that we only see a few of the later deaths and so theoretically the first one could have been jumping off a grassy ledge somewhere but its still bothering me and i needed to mention it.
anyway yeah really hope you like it i tried some new stuff with this one im not sure how well it turned out and thanks again for being so patient!!
EDITING TO ADD SOME MORE WORDS!!! i love talking about my art! so first, all the text on signs and stuff i did go back and look at videos and vods to make sure was entirely accurate, and i wrote all the words entirely by myself. for the lyrics and other text(death message and DELIVERANCE), i used a text tool first to make sure the words would be neat and where i needed them, and then traced over that on a new layer and deleted the original text layer. my handwritting fucking sucks always no matter what, this was a very necessary step. also! this is officially the first thing i have drawn entirely on my phone, rather than on my ipad like i used to do! also i dont use a stylus of any type i just draw with my finger lol.
