Final year of my master's degree

In one month I will start my final year of doing my master's degree. I am a little bit nervous because I have not started my diploma thesis yet (procrastination level 1000). This post is dedicated to the courses I will take in the last year of my studies (not including long planned PhD which (hopefully) will come after I finish this year).

My state exams will contain four parts:

Pharmaceutical biotechnology and biotechnology in biomedicine

Hopefully I will finish this year successfully with no mental or physical damage lol.

Week 242/243, Day 1698.

As you can probably tell, I am slowly stepping away from writing on here. As I go through my corrections, the PhD journey is dwindling more and more, which is a really wonderful, albeit slightly melancholy, feeling. I mean, I still have four papers to publish, and plenty of conferences to present at, but the battle to obtaining the actual degree is getting easier to fight. Hence, I haven’t been on here much. I will continue posting until the day I officially receive my degree, but my posts may be less and less frequent.

Miss to Dr

I got my final med results today, and I am officially a doctor now. (': I got very emotional yesterday after having finished my last ever osce. I was trying so hard to suppress my tears while walking down the hospital hallway one last time. I had dreamed about this moment for my whole life, since I was a child and I can't believe this is the end of my undergraduate journey.

So many people to thank, as I wouldn't have made it this far without them. From my parents to my best friends. Not forgetting all the wonderful doctors and patients who were so lovely towards me. I learnt so much from every single encounter. And I would like to thank myself as well, something which I rarely do, but I do deserve it because I had worked so damn hard to get this far.

I am absolutely terrified of starting work, but I am trying not to think about it for now. I really need to cherish and enjoy this break as much as possible before work life begins.

Congratulations to Class of 2021! We persevered through the pandemic as medical students, and we shall preserve on as doctors.

What I would tell my freshman self

Well of course I'm at a crossroads after 7-8 years of studying. I did law for sometime and was achieving to a level I really liked, and got into the honours program and transferred. I really liked the security I felt inside law school but I severely underappreciated it.

Don't blame me . I was completely confused. I had no idea where I was going , and really the only reason I even picked up a degree was because my sister and family said so. I chose Law because I had some good English language skills here and there and my English teacher usually liked me.

Fast forward to this bitter 25 year old with at least 25k in debt. He's a law school dropout who's finishing a psychological science degree. He suffers from senioritis; low motivation because it's a transition. You know those transitions where you feel like everything is up in the air. Here are some tips I would like to give to anyone starting this confusing process.

1. Don't stray too far from where you want to go - I remember it was the 3rd year of my honours program in Law in Adelaide. I was fed up and all I wanted to do was simple - discover who I truly was, and to discover my passion. So I started taking up all sorts of courses; like visual arts, photography, then I ventured into film. I really loved film but my photography work stunned my photography professor . Too bad the furthest I got in photography was an instagram I very rarely update anymore, despite the Distinction grade.

Don't be bothered using university as a tool to find yourself, it's only a tool to do what you're good at and bring what you're skilled at, out into the world. You're using money, so if you make an investment you want to make it a great investment - like if you were to invest in a website, it would be facebook you would want to invest in , the one that gets you the best salary. So don't invest in arts and end up with an arts certificate, because you just invested 20k in a degree that will get you no returns. None of that money you invested is coming back to you soon. Though if you invest in law or a hard science like engineering or medicine, you've successful used university as a tool to get a higher paying job and you will be paying off your debts in no time . Don't stray from the point.

2. Your network is very rarely gonna be there . I met a lot of people who I thought were going to impress me with time, but really none of the people I've met in college can I really say compete with my high school friends. Of course we will say "hi how's it going" to each other but over time, it's really family and long term high school buddies who really want to party and have fun with me after all that time. Very rarely was the network of friends I had at university there for me in the later years of university. Of course you can meet your potential spouse at university but most likely you should keep stock in a close set of friends whether in university, at a club or somewhere else, maybe in your high school friends list.

3. Final year is difficult and most of the smartest I know repeated due to failing this course or that course. It's really not a big deal anymore. I'm sure you could even find a professor who failed a unit. University is a long list of professors who function according to their own criteria and their own higher level of expertise. You're bound to find at least one professor who you don't jive with. That may mean you're gonna flunk out that professor's course. Rather than seeing a few fail grades as the end of the world, think of the certificate you will get once you complete, and what it will mean to the world

that you completed something that a certain percentage of the population didn't get to obtain.

4. It really doesn't matter where you went but whether you completed. Some kid transferred into Harvard or the no. 1 school in their country. I got an offer to the no.1 school in Australia but never went. It isn't the end of the world if you're not at a prestigious institution, but you're discipline, field or grades are both effective in an economy.
