what will you do your gazan friends whole family dies?
when your friend cries to you and tells you: "my
family in palestine is dying. i think my grandmother is
dead. she was born before the nakba, before israel."
you will try your best to provide comfort. it feels
shallow. and later, when you go to the comfort
of your own home, you will turn on your computer.
your fingers tap hesitantly on the keyboard. a list
of names. all dead people. nearly ten thousand.
maybe it will reach ten thousand tomorrow. and
your eyes will blur as you try to read through, trying
to look for people with the same last name as your
friend. you will wonder, while reading, about these
people and the manner of which they died. were
they blown to bits? were they burned with chemicals?
or did they die in the comfort of their home, or in the arms
of their weeping parents, cradling them as their souls
were cut? focus, youll tell yourself, and youll keep reading.
videos will flash in your mind as you recognize some names.
awni, who wanted to hit 100k subscribers as a youtuber.
besan, the medical student who loved cats and anne with an e.
you also like anne with an e. you remember her favorite
quote: "my life is a perfect graveyard of buried hopes."
why did you like that quote, besan? did you relate to it, as a
palestinian girl? what of your hopes were buried with you?
your phone will ring, and it will be your mom calling. you are
lucky to still have your mom, unlike those poor children. she
dotes on you, asking what you are doing, and you tell her
she tuts, saying you shouldnt read through such things, that it
will only make you feel depressed, that you should just pray.
so you agree, hang up the phone, turn off your computer, and
you will fall asleep thinking about the palestinians who go to bed
to the sound of bombs dropping, mothers crying, children dying.

So thank you @pinkytoothlesso11 and @undeadchestnut for the chance to take part in this stricklake 2023 event! As well as everyone who also participated in it it wouldn't be nearly as fun without you!
