Fanfic Authors to reread
Here's a list of my favorite fanfic authors that write such masterpieces I'm left in awe. I have reread many, many of their stories because the writing is so good.
Astolat - I've read all of her Witcher and Transformer works at least seven times each, lol. The Game of Thrones stories are mind-bogglingly creative, and the Harry Potter works are the best I've ever read in the entire fandom ever. I love how quickly each story progresses and how immersive each world is, and I find that her stories are the ones my mind most often turns to and thinks about while I'm daydreaming.
spqr - phenomenal, breathtaking, single-chapter oneshots that slice into a fandom with such precision that you don't even have to know what the fandom is but you'll love it and feel like you've been a part of it for years. Masterful, exquisite, heartfelt stories that are like a solid jab to the solar plexus when you step into them.
betts - oh my gosh does this author know how messy emotions and relationships and life can be. She flays apart characters, sees what makes them who they are--all the flaws, mistakes, grief, bad parts of them--and shows exactly what it means to be human. I've never felt seen like this before. betts has a gift and each story is an absolute treasure.
glimmerglanger - this makes me want to cry. I've bookmarked every single one of their stories. Read many of them over and over and over. Screamed in elation when a new update came through. but - they're gone. Nuked. Obliterated. My heart goes to the author. This is a reminder to treat these writers better, to not nag or insult or complain about the writing they do for free. I sobbed when I found out their entire archive had been deleted. Those stories were breathtaking. Staggeringly creative. All Codywan fics set in such masterful worlds: the Mermaid AU, Magic AU, Yellowstone, Baseball, Time Travel, Captured by Vader and tortured, heck, even the Animal Crossing crack!fic was a blast to read. The rarepairs were so much fun, Just Right with Obi-Wan/Alpha 17 was a personal favorite. I hope glimmerglanger is doing ok and knows that they have so much support from dedicated fans.
objectlesson - alright this is my guilty pleasure. Here's who to go to if you want interesting, hot, probably out of your comfort zone but gosh darnit if it doesn't awaken something in you, smut. Never thought I'd read Doc/Lightning McQueen fanfic but here we are. This author knows exactly what's she's doing and I'm all for it.
goldcranes - Masterclass of intense focus on little details. On exactly which lens setting you use to set the scene, what to focus on, how to best portray what's happening to wrench on your reader's heartstrings and make them feel. Phenomenal writing.
esama - my first fandom crush :). Whispers in Corners is my #1 favorite fanfic of all time. She's who I turned to when I first started reading fanfic a decade ago and I still lovingly go back and read what I consider her greatest hits.

Five (5) 🖐🏻 Grimm Brothers Fairy Tales I wish everyone knew better
Yes. I know these are rife with 19th Century heteronormative ideas of Morality and Meekness, and Beauty and Duty, and what even counts as a “Happy Ending.” But you can’t subvert a story, and queer its telling, if you don’t know it exists. And also, problematic elements aside, they’re just good romps.
And Spoopy Season is also Storytelling Season.
1) The White Snake (a king’s servant is able to understand the languages of animals, thanks to eating the flesh of a roasted white snake, helps animals in distress, and is helped in return)
2) Frau Holle (an abused stepdaughter is taken in by an Otherworldly Witch)
3) Thumbthick (A “Tom Thumb” story that’s also a fantastic allegory for growing up disabled, with supportive parents)
4)  The Devil with the Three Golden Hairs (A king tries to thwart a prophecy, and prevent a poor boy from marrying his daughter. He Fails).
5) The Two Brothers (The Rompiest of Romps: Twin brothers who are heroes. Funny talking animal sidekicks. Slaying a giant seven-headed dragon. A plucky, intelligent, princess. Bringing the dead back to life. Why hasn’t this been adapted into a summer blockbuster movie, yet?)

Top 3 your own favourite stories?
Before I answer, I just want to let you know that I have received your other asks and I'll get to writing your request as soon as I can 😊
Okay, favorites.
1. Has to be Driving Mr. Tovar. It probably always will be because of the complexity of the storytelling, the character developments, the blend of genres, and just the fun I had writing it, from start to finish.
2. Christmas Special. I love the repressed and taciturn Pero suddenly deciding to let his feelings out. It was so much fun to work on the reader's attempts to figure him out, but then just give up and go with it. Only to then discover that he's actually this whole other person underneath.
3. Wrong Way Home with Marcus Pike. It's perhaps not my best writing overall, but I love it. I love the hopefulness of it. The kindness of helping a stranger and the unexpected reward. It's also the most "me" I've ever made a reader character, which makes it closer to my heart than all my other reader inserts.
Thank you for asking! I hope my answer was informative 😀

Do you have a favorite story you’ve written? Or a favorite trope?
That’s super hard so imma cheat and give three. I think my favorite stories off the top of my head are probably:
Eyeteeth
Love Thy Enemy
Sweet Dreams
My favorite tropes include fake dating, arranged marriage, and one bed (on the awkward wholesome side), and I’ve written all of them! Sweet dreams is one bed, and Love Thy Enemy is practically arranged marriage with has a bonus strong female x weaker male ship dynamic which I love. Eyeteeth has a monster x human ship dynamic which is another one of my favorite dynamics.

I have this love of Sci-fi stories that are centered around a ship and her crew. I think it started with Han, Chewie, and the Millennium Falcon, but it matured in me when we watched Star Trek: Next Generation every Saturday evening for years. I love the Enterprise and the Next Gen crew. Love them. Then it moved on to Serenity and her Crew. Firefly is one of the best shows of all time, ever. From there I embraced the Roci with Holden, Amos, Alex and Naomi with occasional visits from Miller and Bobbie (both book series and show), the Original Star Trek, and now Farscape with Moya and her crew. I'm just a total sucker for this trope. I think part of it is my eternal love of the Golden Age of Sail. I think I love that the home is an important and almost sentient, if not just actually sentient, part of the family. But, Firefly said it best. It's love that keeps you in the air.
I'm not big on space stories in general. I don't enjoy the terror of space, but give me a good ship, a crew to sail her, a guiding star and I'm all in.

Museum of mmmmm I cannot spell it all off the top of my head is just lovely. I don't want to spoil if your only 2 seasons in but the way the AI gains sentience/purpose also backstory makes me cry and I just want to hug his processor. Also what is your favorite story from the podcast? Mine is probably the picture frames from the street.
Ah! Hi nonny! And I know! I’m on episode six of season 2? I think. But it’s great so far!
As for my favorite story I really liked the story about the Helena Fortuna the ship? I need more answers about the ship. I was at work listening to it and a chill traveled down my spine. It was so amazing! Also high up there is the Fountain where Guide saw the Kelpie and thought it was a horse and freaked out a bit. I wanted to give the guide a hug and say I don’t blame you buddy!
Also, though you didn’t ask my mother was listening to it with it and she said she really liked the story about the Caldron!

so for my favorite things that you've written: - Any and everything that you've written in the SB universe. One of the things that I love so much about you writing is the way that you include small - seemingly inconsequential - details and turning them into so much more. You did this a LOT with Ezra in PONR too, but in SB it's just evident in every word on the page. The sugar. The crack in the ceiling. Ellie wanting to bake for Dina. I love every word of it. - Aphelion, and not the parts that I've worked on. It's very clear that you love Oberyn very much, and it has been such a JOY to write this story with you and watch the things that your mind has come up with for him in this AU. You have such good and RELEVANT ideas for where this story is going to (and should) go, and I'm so so so so so lucky to be able to watch it happen up close. Please don't ever stop loving this man. - I also really like (and often go back to) your Nico, because it's such a sensory experience to read for him when you write him and I love what you're doing with tying it back to the movie series. Thank you for sharing your work with us and for writing such amazing and engaging stories.
Rachael, these things coming from you mean the flipping WORLD to me. Especially when you’re saying them about Joel and Oberyn, two characters you’ve loved for such a long time. 🥺🥲🥰
THANK YOU for appreciating the little details in SB as much as you do. They all have a purpose and I’m just so happy to know you’re paying attention to them.
And!! I’m the lucky one when it comes to Aphelion! Getting to write that story with you is so much fun and it has definitely helped my writing overall to be able to collaborate with you on that. I’m thrilled that you like the things I come up with for that one - I’m fact I *may* have something to show you later tonight so I hope you like that, too.
The fact that you called my Nico a sensory experience is making me so emotional. That’s such an enormous compliment. I had such a blast writing that one, and it all just came out of nowhere and now that I’m thinking about it I owe Nico and Reader a return trip to Buenos Aires, don’t I?

Hey, I came here from the fairy tale poll.
can you recommend some fairy tales with the theme you mentioned? I can't think of many where the monarchy isn't romanticized in some way if they are involved in the plot. fairy tales being used as a way to teach propaganda is an interesting topic I could talk so much about.
But stories like robin hood are often not technically fairy tales, maybe I'm thinking to to much in boxes and definitions here
I was just about to sit down and make a compilation post of my favorite fairy tales with the different motifs I list in my poll.
Since you asked about this, specifically, I'll post it first: King Trying to Avoid a Prophecy:
Simpleton Sibling (autistic-coded) [Warning for ableist ending as a "joke" -- but it's public domain, so we can change that]:
Wounded Soldier (If you accept PTSD as a wound, and if you accept allegory, rather than explicitly spelled out):
Evil Wizard, Otherworld Being at the Crossroads,Magic Objects, Magical barrier (landscape), & Magical Barrier (man-made):
Ex-soldier, "Useless" superpowers:
Animal helpers, Princess in an arranged marriage (Honestly, I consider any story with "Whoever achieves [X] wins the Princess's hand in marriage" to be an arranged marriage, which is ~90% of the most well-known stories. But in this one, the princess actually has agency, smarts, and something to do):

So Venus is my favorite planet in the solar system - everything about it is just so weird.
Tumblr media
It has this extraordinarily dense atmosphere that by all accounts shouldn't exist - Venus is close enough to the sun (and therefore hot enough) that the atmosphere should have literally evaporated away, just like Mercury's. We think Earth manages to keep its atmosphere by virtue of our magnetic field, but Venus doesn't even have that going for it. While Venus is probably volcanically active, it definitely doesn't have an internal magnetic dynamo, so whatever form of volcanism it has going on is very different from ours. And, it spins backwards! For some reason!!
But, for as many mysteries as Venus has, the United States really hasn't spent much time investigating it. The Soviet Union, on the other hand, sent no less than 16 probes to Venus between 1961 and 1984 as part of the Venera program - most of them looked like this!
Tumblr media
The Soviet Union had a very different approach to space than the United States. NASA missions are typically extremely risk averse, and the spacecraft we launch are generally very expensive one-offs that have only one chance to succeed or fail.
It's lead to some really amazing science, but to put it into perspective, the Mars Opportunity rover only had to survive on Mars for 90 days for the mission to be declared a complete success. That thing lasted 15 years. I love the Opportunity rover as much as any self-respecting NASA engineer, but how much extra time and money did we spend that we didn't technically "need" to for it to last 60x longer than required?
Anyway, all to say, the Soviet Union took a more incremental approach, where failures were far less devastating. The Venera 9 through 14 probes were designed to land on the surface of Venus, and survive long enough to take a picture with two cameras - not an easy task, but a fairly straightforward goal compared to NASA standards. They had…mixed results.
Venera 9 managed to take a picture with one camera, but the other one's lens cap didn't deploy.
Venera 10 also managed to take a picture with one camera, but again the other lens cap didn't deploy.
Venera 11 took no pictures - neither lens cap deployed this time.
Venera 12 also took no pictures - because again, neither lens cap deployed.
Lotta problems with lens caps.
For Venera 13 and 14, in addition to the cameras they sent a device to sample the Venusian "soil". Upon landing, the arm was supposed to swing down and analyze the surface it touched - it was a simple mechanism that couldn't be re-deployed or adjusted after the first go.
This time, both lens caps FINALLY ejected perfectly, and we were treated to these marvelous, eerie pictures of the Venus landscape:
Tumblr media
However, when the Venera 14 soil sampler arm deployed, instead of sampling the Venus surface, it managed to swing down and land perfectly on….an ejected lens cap.
