ig the reason might be bc why you ... y me? isnt ~strictly~ a ""bl"", in the sense that the main character is a girl called namwah and a straight couple (namwah and gap), and the bl couples are the side couples, but they get a Very Good Portion of screen time, and they're just all SO wholesome. the whole show is just Wholesome and Comforting with such great friendships, sibling dynamics (especially shogun and namwah!!!), and romantic relationships!!! and its stunningly shot with some really good osts too.

it truly is like. my light comfort show that doesnt require me to use my brain, you know? i can just sit back and chill to it and its sandwiched right in between the middle of the week as i wait for the weekend and between us. and im In Loooooove with shogun x maitoh and just. their entire build up and storyline SOOOO so much!!!!

the first time i watched a thai bl (or any bl actually) was back at the end of 2017 when my ex girlfriend convinced me to watch together with me with her. at first i was Really Confused because i'd never gotten hold of thai culture or bl culture before and i thought asians didn't go that far lmao (if you've seen twm u know what im talking about) but i fell in love with max and tul nevertheless. i did find the story v v v problematic at times and i have my issues with it til this day but max and tul's chemistry completly sold the series for me!! after i finished it i rushed to follow both on instagram and THEY ARE THE BESTEST FRIENDS EVER!!!! really their friendship is great to see i love them so so so much!!

while my ex gf didn't mind the whole thai bl culture that much, i was interested in it because again, it took me by surprise coming from asia yet showcasing that much physical affection in a mlm relationship. so i went to know more about it and watch other shows, that's how i first watched 2moons together with my best friend. she was head over heels for phayo and i would Die and Kill for mingkit (which didn't change when i watched 2m2). after 2m, i began watching sotus and what the duck, but eventually i droppped both.

all of this happened during my school vacays (dec-jan), so when school returned, i didn't have time to watch the series (and i found sotus so boring lmao i dropped it even before school) and having to find links was a pain in my ass (for wtd) so it ended there. or so i thought

i follow max and tul since then and i always keep up with their stuff, twm next chapter was the only bl thing i watched until this year (a disappointment.) when i found thai bls again. and god......

i was just mindlessly scrolling thru tumblr, minding my bussiness you know, just being there, chilling, when i saw until we meet again trending. i had No Idea what that was at the time (end of decemeber 2019 i guess??) but inkorn was all over it with the beach scene and the "wanna be my boyfriend" moment. i was really interested in discovering what show was that, and when i saw it was thai, i legit closed the app. i didn't want to go back to thai bl hell because i knew it would be REALLY time consuming and emotionally consuming too. so i ignored it for a few weeks until uwma trended again, now with winteam. and boy. i tried Hard to fight it but when i realized, i was already on ep5 of until we meet again lmao. and that's how i got back into thai bls. it's all winteam's fault. i blame it all on them and their mindblowing chemistry.

from then on, a thing led to another, i began following oliver (0ffgun) and because of his why r u gifs i decided to watch the show, and then love by chance, and then i followed some other blogs, especially faiza's, which was when 2gether started airing, and then i began watching it and then other show and other series.... AND WELL. here i am today pls say sike

aaaah, yes. after a couple of years spent detached from a show, its always nice to reflect back on one and see it from a fresher perspective.

honestly? what Really worked in 2gether's massive success was that it was a covid/lockdown bl. and that too, from amongst one of the first ones. it gave people something to watch and something to look forward to, when the entire world was in some form of lockdown/under restrictions.

and i think it being a Social Media Phenomenon reaaaally added to that. it meant it got wide wide wide exposure all across the planet.

add to the fact that, lets be real, bright and win are Very Extremely Good Looking guys, which, ya know, there's absolutely Nothing Wrong with that. At All. come on now, lets not pretend and lie that we don't all look at these actors and comment on their attractiveness - we do, and there's nothing about it to be ashamed of!

and it was just a really feel good rom com, at a time when you wanted something cosy and comfy and feel good. the storyline wasnt anything new, you could pretty much guess the whole plot. but that's also something that Works - keeping it simple.

but yeah. i wouldnt say it was The Groundbreaking Thai BL. Sotus was a Huge Worldwide Success. Love By Chance was a Huge Worldwide Success.

2gether was just that. Another Huge Worldwide Success, and gmmtv smelt blood with it and FULLY went all out and milked it.

but. yeah. it didnt really do much for impact, in the sense that it wasnt anything "new" from thailand, unlike KinnPorsche or Not Me or The Eclipse or ITSAY or even UWMA, i'd argue (yes i will put UWMA in here bc it was a story about reincarnated lovers which is something fresh), which all have bought something new to table, in terms of storytelling and cinematography or having a strong political theme weaved into the very fabric of it or a whole different genre that was executed so so well.
