#evil!sara my beloved.
Note
For the ask game, please! Hand Jumper AU where Samin is an officer and Sayeon might technically be a criminal.
Role reversal AUs my beloved:
As per gentry's theory: Sara Lee tried to kill Sayeon as a child because their family usually develops powers early, so she suspected Sayeon was not an aberrant. A corps officer saved Sayeon, then took in both children. Samin came to admire the corps for saving her sister. More pragmatically, Samin feared her little sister would not be safe among an aberrant gang.
The sisters have a great relationship in this AU. Sayeon adores her big sis and wants to defend the law just like her someday. Also Sayeon is fine with being an aberrant or not in this AU, because she does not have prejudice against aberrants and she would be happy to join the corps with her sister.
Sayeon accidentally entered the room right before Evil White Haired Lady was about to kill Jael. Picking up a chair, Sayeon hit her over the head. Whether fortunately or unfortunately, Sayeon activated her hidden powers and drained the corps officer, killing her. (Sayeon maintains this was only "technically" a crime because it was self-defense. Also there is no law saying that corps officers are allowed to murder random kids. Sayeon studied the law and she would know!)
However Sayeon and Jael realize that they will not get to make their self-defense case in court. They have uncovered the dark secret of the corps, that they drain young aberrants and kill them to make themselves stronger. This being secret and illegal only means the corps would kill them both to cover it up. Sayeon doesn't want to get her older sister in trouble, so she and Jael flee together.
Fortunately Samin quickly tracks them down and takes them to safehouse with some of her friends on the wrong side of the law. After joining the corps, Samin saw their dark side. She's been working to change the corps from the inside but also making connections on the outside in case it goes wrong. Her top priority is ensuring the safety of her little sister.

3) The Reading List - Sara Nisha Adams -

He shops every Wednesday, goes to Temple, and worries about his granddaughter, Priya, who hides in her room reading while he spends his evenings watching nature documentaries. Aleisha is a bright but anxious teenager working at the local library for the summer when she discovers a crumpled-up piece of paper in the back of To Kill a Mockingbird. It’s a list of novels that she’s never heard of before. Intrigued, and a little bored with her slow job at the checkout desk, she impulsively decides to read every book on the list, one after the other. As each story gives up its magic, the books transport Aleisha from the painful realities she’s facing at home. When Mukesh arrives at the library, desperate to forge a connection with his bookworm granddaughter, Aleisha passes along the reading list… hoping that it will be a lifeline for him too. Slowly, the shared books create a connection between two lonely souls, as fiction helps them escape their grief and everyday troubles and find joy again.
4) Midnight Is The Darkest Hour - Ashley Winstead -
Ruth Collier has always felt like an outsider, even as her father rains fire and brimstone from the church pulpit. In Bottom Springs, his word is as good as law. But there are things the townspeople fear more than God, like the Low Man, a vampiric figure said to kill sinners in their beds on moonless nights. When a skull is found deep in the swamp, a hunt for the Low Man begins. Suspicion turns to Everett – Ruth's oldest friend, with a dark past. As Ruth and Everett grow closer, Ruth begins to unearth the town's secrets, determined to discover the truth. But as the line between good and evil grows ever thin, how far will Ruth go to save the person she loves most?
5) The Appeal - Janice Hallett -
The Fairway Players, a local theatre group, is in the midst of rehearsals when tragedy strikes the family of director Martin Hayward and his wife Helen, the play’s star. Their young granddaughter has been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, and with an experimental treatment costing a tremendous sum, their castmates rally to raise the money to give her a chance at survival. But not everybody is convinced of the experimental treatment’s efficacy—or of the good intentions of those involved. As tension grows within the community, things come to a shocking head at the explosive dress rehearsal. The next day, a dead body is found, and soon, an arrest is made. In the run-up to the trial, two young lawyers sift through the material—emails, messages, letters—with a growing suspicion that the killer may be hiding in plain sight. The evidence is all there, between the lines, waiting to be uncovered.
6) My Sister, The Serial Killer - Oyinkan Braithwaite -
When Korede's dinner is interrupted one night by a distress call from her sister, Ayoola, she knows what's expected of her: bleach, rubber gloves, nerves of steel and a strong stomach. This'll be the third boyfriend Ayoola's dispatched in, quote, self-defence and the third mess that her lethal little sibling has left Korede to clear away. She should probably go to the police for the good of the menfolk of Nigeria, but she loves her sister and, as they say, family always comes first. Until, that is, Ayoola starts dating the doctor where Korede works as a nurse. Korede's long been in love with him, and isn't prepared to see him wind up with a knife in his back: but to save one would mean sacrificing the other...
7) Outlawed - Anna North -
The day of her wedding, 17 year old Ada's life looks good; she loves her husband, and she loves working as an apprentice to her mother, a respected midwife. But after a year of marriage and no pregnancy, in a town where barren women are routinely hanged as witches, her survival depends on leaving behind everything she knows. She joins up with the notorious Hole in the Wall Gang, a band of outlaws led by a preacher-turned-robber known to all as the Kid. Charismatic, grandiose, and mercurial, the Kid is determined to create a safe haven for outcast women. But to make this dream a reality, the Gang hatches a treacherous plan that may get them all killed. And Ada must decide whether she's willing to risk her life for the possibility of a new kind of future for them all.
8) Madhouse At The End Of The Earth - Julian Sancton -
The harrowing true survival story of an early polar expedition that went terribly awry--with the ship frozen in ice and the crew trapped inside for the entire sunless, Antarctic winter. Drawing on firsthand accounts of the Belgica's voyage and exclusive access to the ship's logbook, Sancton tells the tale of its long, isolated imprisonment on the ice--a story that NASA studies today in its research on isolation for missions to Mars. In vivid, hair-raising prose, Sancton recounts the myriad forces that drove these men right up to and over the brink of madness.
9) Morbidly Yours - Ivy Fairbanks -
Callum Flannelly would rather dive into an open grave than take a stranger to dinner and a movie. But he can only inherit the family undertaking business and carry on their legacy under one condition: He must marry before his 35th birthday. So it’s out of the mortuary and into the dating scene. Lark Thompson would rather get crushed by a falling anvil than stay next to a funeral home during her stay in Galway, Ireland. The vivacious American cartoon creator and animator came here to embrace life, not be reminded of losing her husband. When Lark learns of Callum’s dilemma and aversion to marrying out of necessity rather than love, she agrees to help the introverted mortician. Although sworn off love herself, she is optimistic that Callum can find The One and secure his inheritance. But as the dating project progresses and their friendship grows, so does a mutual attraction. The more time she spends with serious, sarcastic Callum, the more she dreads finding him a match. And the more disastrous dates he endures, the more he dreads Lark’s imminent return to the states. If they think it’s possible to ignore their connection, they’re dead wrong.
10) Bunny - Mona Awad -
Samantha Heather Mackey couldn't be more of an outsider in her small, highly selective MFA program at New England's Warren University. A scholarship student who prefers the company of her dark imagination to that of most people, she is utterly repelled by the rest of her fiction writing cohort--a clique of unbearably twee rich girls who call each other Bunny, and seem to move and speak as one. But everything changes when Samantha receives an invitation to the Bunnies' fabled Smut Salon, and finds herself inexplicably drawn to their front door--ditching her only friend, Ava, in the process. As Samantha plunges deeper and deeper into the Bunnies' sinister yet saccharine world, beginning to take part in the ritualistic off-campus Workshop where they conjure their monstrous creations, the edges of reality begin to blur. Soon, her friendships with Ava and the Bunnies will be brought into deadly collision.

okay i’ve got some sleep, the thoughts are more coherent, the crying has somewhat stopped so here are my thoughts on the last ever season of young royals 💜 (with spoilers)
🐟 writing + pacing
the writing of season 3 is so so similar to the way they wrote season 2. there’s always this huge emphasis on something that the audience could probably care less about. season 2 was about rousseau and season 3 was about hillerska closing down. seriously, did anyone really care that much about these two events? anyway, this pushed a lot of the emphasis onto the school which i felt was unnecessary screen time wasted.
pacing-wise is also similar to season 2. it’s unbearably underwhelming in the first few episodes then it gets really fast-paced in the last 2 episodes. i don’t know how this effectively gets the writers’ point across because i would’ve definitely appreciated some breathing space between the break-up in episode 5 to wilhelm dropping everything in episode 6.
that being said, wille’s decision appears rather impulsive even though we as a viewer know that this decision was something he thought about for the past 3 seasons. being a part of the monarchy was never on wille’s wishlist (and we are painfully made aware of it at almost every moment) but the fact that the break-up happened just before that made it seem like he did it for simon. i think that could’ve been conveyed better.
🎹 music
oh my god the soundtrack this season is especially good. every single song was so perfectly chosen & it portrayed the emotions of the characters so well. i also love the idea that the sounds sound more mature too (no abc i’m the alpha bitch type of nonsense 💀) because the characters are growing and becoming aware of the world and their surroundings
one thing though: i am so disappointed they did not continue the ep4-ep6 song parallel. the season 3 song would’ve worked so well for any wilmon scenes pre-breakup
also WHAT SONG IS THAT IN THE TRAILER AND WHY IS IT NOT EVEN IN THE SHOW? that infuriates me so bad especially since the song is so good
👑 characters
BROOOOO wilhelm angered me the whole season. he was so selfish and kept on going "me me me"; i hated his guts. however, i love that there was a clear distinction between crown prince wilhelm and wille. it’s clear that whatever crazy rules was not his decision to make and he was simply the messenger, but he still could’ve delivered the message more sympathetically. at the end of the day, i’m glad that he could differentiate prince wilhelm from wille and decide for himself.
SIMON. MY BELOVED. MY POOR BOY. he went through so much this season and he didn’t deserve any of that. i’m glad he was happy in the end but i wished he freed himself from the shackles of the monarchy (even if that includes wille) earlier on. it was so disheartening to see him lose a part of himself to keep up with the royal court’s wishes.
i wished felice got more attention that didn’t involve the people around her. i wanted to see more of her—how betrayed she felt by sara, how she was treated differently compared to her peers. yeah, she got that moment about her hair and standing up for what’s fair as the only black girl in school but everything else was just about wilhelm or the rest of the girls. make my girl be more than just the supportive best friend!!!
stedrika. no words. they reek of superiority and i hated it. i am glad they finally got together in the end though
august. i don’t know what to say about him. i’m relieved that him and wilhelm finally got their peace. i am also relieved that him and sara finally got closure. and as evil as it may be, i am glad that he is the new heir for the monarchy as it was always what he’s wanted—even if he realised it too late that it was only the idea of being king that he wanted, not the actuality of the role’s responsibilities.
and finally sara. this girl struck a chord with me. everything she said this season just somehow resonated with me. maybe it's because i recently found out i have adhd so i could see myself in her but i just felt so connected with her and seen by her actions. all along she's been trying to do what she thinks is best for everyone, but she just needs some help doing it the proper way. i was so sad for her when micke abandoned her again because it really felt as though he was turning over a new leaf. and when she made up with felice, i was full on sobbing at that point
💜 ending
now straight up, i felt that the ending was sub-par. it was so rushed, i barely had the time to process whatever was happening. one thing i love about young royals is how thought out everything is, but the ending was so cliche. i love that wilmon got their happy ending but it was just... not executed in a way i feel was satisfactory.
also i love the montage that played but i don't think it was the best choice of media to use. wilmon was constantly on-and-off during those periods. it's weird to use those because they weren't really official during that time (at least not to the whole of sweden).
the only thing that really moved me in the last moments is wille breaking the fourth wall again with a smile on his face, his hair all scruffed and knowing that he is now free to live his life however he wants to.
overall, i would have to watch the series again to process it all properly but these are my thoughts as of now, 2-days post watching season 3 <3

now see my problems with geats come from the fact that the writing is bad. it's trying to deconstruct rider tropes without actually deconstructing them; it's failing to make the characters sympathetic when by all means they should be (especially where buffa is concerned; i love that archetype in my rider boys — kumon kaito and hiiro and ren are some of my favorites for a reason — but not once had buffa made me feel like they do); it did a 180 as far as its treatment of female characters is concerned (neon's storyline and development coming because of kyuun; ace's mother basically being a macguffin, and then the fact that they cast an actress younger than hideyoshi kan to play her; pretty much everything regarding tsumuri re: becoming the next goddess of creation; perhaps most egregiously considering that it's 2023, sara getting fridged for the sake of keiwa's development — and by the way you can't portray a character who wants to fridge sara as evil, and then fridge her anyway). the character focus and balance is also messed up — even during the arc of drive that is literally just about shin's daddy issues, there's still plenty of excellent stuff for gou, chase, and kiriko. (of course now "why is geats so ace focused" has probably ruined that kind of criticism forever, unfortunately.)
what's more is that it feels like people who love geats (and you can if you want! all the better to you for still being able to enjoy it! i truly and sincerely wish that was me because i want to enjoy things) will not accept any criticism of the show. mad about how badly keiwa got sidelined? oh, you're just a sad shipper. upset about buffa's actions? you just can't handle moral ambiguity. not only are both of these things untrue (at least in my case — rider is not all about ships for me, and i love morally ambiguous characters when they're done right — kumon kaito! heart! gou is objectively heroic sure but as a black fan of kamen rider a lot of his actions make me uncomfortable so that also is an example!) but they're so obviously just excuses used to deflect, and it's frustrating. say what you want about my beloved revice, for example, and i'll... probably agree with you. revice is not a perfect series. neither is gaim and neither is ex-aid. i'm incredibly passionate about all three of these seasons, and if you come to me with criticisms of them i'll hear you out and listen, regardless of if i agree or disagree. most fans of these seasons are the same.
i'm tired of geats being a sacred cow. i'm tired of being told that i'm "treating the characters like they're real people" or "unable to watch anything but kid's shows" when i point out actually bad writing. and i'm sick of my friends getting criticized when they do the same. i don't know why geats has attracted this kind of fan but it's incredibly upsetting and i'm tired of it.

Book recommendations; Young Adult fantasy pt. 1/?
So you're looking for new YA fantasy books to read, or you want to begin reading YA fantasy and don't know where to start. Don't worry you're in good hands. Below are a few books (and series) that I greatly recommend, I hope these will intruige you!
As always check trigger warnings and goodreads for more information.
Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson (2019)
Tumblr media
Following Elisabeth Scrivener, we are introduced to a magical world with sorcerers, demons and enchanted books. Elisabeth has known her entire life that sorcerers are evil, but when she is accused of releasing a dangerous grimoire, she must turn to the sorcerer Nathaniel Thorn to prove her innocence, and ends up entangled in a conspiracy of old.
This one is, in my opinion, a read to tackle when you want something fun and light hearted (although I did get emotional near the end). It's fast paced, the magic system isn't too complicated to understand, and the cover is absolutely gorgeous. The characters will forever have a special place in my heart, especially Nathaniel, who I related to all throughout the book.
The Circle by Mats Strandberg and Sara Elfgren (2011)
Tumblr media
Taking a dive towards the gritty side of urban fantasy, this book is sure to keep you awake into the late hours. This book follows a group of Swedish teenagers with newly gained magical powers as they learn they are The Chosen Ones. They aren't what you would consider friends, and the animosity in the group is intense, but to save the world they have to put their differences aside and work together.
I admit, this book sounds cliché and tame in my little blurb, but it's diffucult to read from the start, with violence and darker themes being in focus in most of the book. I personally loved it due to how insane the plot gets and how the characters act like real people I've met. It also gives an insight to an aspect in Scandinavian teen culture, which by being of that area myself can admit is quite similar to my own experiences, though not quite as gory. The soft magic system is really interesting, and I absolutely adore the characters.
This book is succeeded by Fire (2012) and The Key (2013).
Trigger warnings include depictions of suicide, self-harm, eating disorders and pedophilia.
The Girl Who Fell Beneath The Sea by Axie Oh (2022)
Tumblr media
Inspired by The Tale of Shim Cheong and Spirited Away, this book combines traditional with fantastical, leaving us with a wonderous outcome. When Mina offers herself up as the sea god's bride instead of her brother Joon's beloved, Shim Cheong, she is swept away to the spirit world, where she sets it in her sights to wake up the sea god so the storms that ravage the land may be stopped.
This book found me at a time where I really needed it, and now it's my turn to help it find someone else. The colour and love that shine from this book is something that I didn't know you could feel so clearly. All characters are extremely lovable, and the writing will make you emotional more than once. It reads like a ghibli movie, which makes me want to petition the studio to turn this masterpiece of a book into a masterpiece of a movie.
Cinder by Marissa Meyer (2012)
Tumblr media
Inspired by Cinderella, this book follows the cyborg Cinder on a sci-fi retelling of the brothers Grimm fairy tale. When she becomes entangled with the handsome prince Kai (and an entire intergalactic political mess featuring the Lunar queen Levana), Cinder must find answers in her past to save the future.
I absolutely LOVE the Lunar Chronicles; the writing is easy to get lost in (I finished Cinder in three or four hours), the world building is incredibly intruiging and the characters were easy to love. Personally, I was motivated to finish even faster by Levana's chapters, because they honestly gave me the biggest ick I've ever experienced by a book villain. Good job Marissa Meyer, I salute you for being able to write a sympathetic villain that I absolutely detest.
This book is succeeded by Scarlett (2013), Cress (2014) and Winter (2015).
Those are the recomendations! I hope you may find a world you fall in love with through my recommendations. I find that fantasy is one of the most enjoyable genres of literature, and so I was compelled to make this list.
Happy reading!
-Cami

Legends of Tomorrow is... sorry, was... a complicated show with a very uncomplicated premise. It was technically a sci-fi/superhero show about a bunch of misfits travelling through time to fix anomalies. The reality was much more than that, it was a show that was at once better and worse than Doctor Who, funnier and more inventive than many standard comedies and more heartfelt and sincere than many Emmy winning dramas.
It was also absolute nonsense and one of the dumbest shows around, but one thing it never was was boring. It began life with a fairly rote premise, picking up strays from existing DC superhero shows that were airing at the time (Arrow and Flash) and brought them together under the Captaincy of Rip Hunter, a British space cowboy who wanted to stop the man responsible for the murder of his wife and child. A remarkably straightforward mission statement which then evolved over the seasons to become fixing time anomalies, fighting the Legion of Doom, sending time exiles back to their proper place, fighting resurrected evildoers of history, magical beasts, and aliens before finishing on a final season with the very simple plot of finding their way home from the 20s... whilst fighting evil versions of themselves.
For all this high concept malarky, Legends had two key strengths:
1. Its prescience to use lesser known characters as its ensemble, allowing for an easy rotation of cast and allowing them to take (sometimes extreme) liberties with the source material and avoid becoming predictable.
Many characters came and went but all had incedible chemistry and the crew of the Waverider ( the Legends' timeship) always felt like family. Additionally, throughout its run, Legends accumulated perhaps the most diverse and representative cast of any show on a major network, featuring a female bisexual main character from the get go, promoted to Captain from season 2 onwards. By the end of its run the main cast was predominantly female, with a number of sexualities, ethnicities, and religious backgrounds represented.
2. Its willingness to completely throw out the core concept of the show almost every season. All that carried over through all seven seasons was time travel and the team righting wrongs (along with stalwart Captain Sara Lance and AI turned real person Gideon). It seems almost appropriate for a show that has always defied convention (and critics) should end so abruptly, cancelled before given a chance to officially end, on a cliffhanger for the crew (though not without giving us a cheeky glimpse of what the future held for them in the penultimate episode) wherein our brave heroes find themselves arrested for crimes against time (Monty Python would be proud). It ended not with a bang but a literal groan, also conveniently working well as a place to very easily pick up where they left off, should the show ever get picked up in the future. "Where were the Legends all this time?" "Time prison." "Oh ok, moving on."
Regardless of what it was, what it is now, is over and it will leave a very bizarre gap in my life unlike perhaps any other show has or will. It was not the best show, nor even my most beloved show, but it nonetheless holds a very special place in my heart.
This is a show that I started watching with my then girlfriend in 2016 when we had not long moved in together in our first place together, a dingy, very small flat with what could charitably be called five rooms, but was essentially two rooms and three cupboards masquerading as rooms. It was one of the few shows we discovered together and started watching together as a couple and over the course of its run we moved out of our flat, into a new house, got engaged, got married, travelled to four countries, survived a global pandemic, new jobs, and the birth of our first child.
Showrunners Phil Klemmer and Keto Shimizu described the Waverider as a kind of "halfway home" for individuals in need of help, be that moving on, working out issues, growing as a person, or just finding their own sense of peace. It is perhaps fitting then that it is now that we bid farewell to the crew of the Waverider, this show that has carried us through relationship firsts, joys, and heartache; we are whole now, we no longer need them. But we will miss them.

Island Part 1 Live Blogging
I didn't watch anything last week because of being overwhelmed and busy for the past 10 or so days but finally I'm ready to once again start a new show when I should be studying.
My main reason for watching this is really just Cha Eunwoo because I miss seeing his face. People seem to really like his character and say his acting improved so I'm even more excited. I wanted to start Korean sff shows anyway so might as well start here even though I got spoiled for a biiiiig thing that happens at the end of S2 and also people's reactions have been like good but not great.
Ep 1 (Mar 14)
ah they're toast
oh they're not speaking Korean
hello my beloved Eunwoo
i never know whether to trust this type of old man who is the lady's father's butler man and is some sort of mentor to her as well
oof the wedding dress monster killed and ate someone?
isn't there gonna be a fuss about the dead body
ah so the lady is a reincarnation of the woman in the white dress who previously died? and the man is the one who's been living at Tamara since then?
olden times Jeju - the guy was a child and was forced to become half human half demon. where's the other kid who became that way too
oh bulter sir where are you going and what did the student see?
lol we already saw the man being selfish and self-absorbed so that's not doing anything for me but ig he's also gonna become a demon now? also i originally thought the assistant who she told to look into those two men was him but ig it's a different man
A pretty meh first episode tbh
Ep 2 (Mar 14)
damn they really did this shit to the children
beautiful beloved Cha Eunwoo <333 I am very fond of him
oh the bulter mans is Miho's protector
the slug things are so fucking disgusting
these action scenes are so boring because they go on for too long, I don't care enough about Miho, it's only ep 2 so I know she's not gonna die or really get hurt, and the immortal guy is gonna come save her each time like bro move on why are the action and chase scenes so long
yknow I find Miho endearing when she's praying to God, Buddha and being nervous to go to sleep and her nervous mannerisms when the man in the dark comes to her room and I think it reminds me of Saras played by Ae in PS I Hate You
actually she's endearing when she's trying to get Van to sign the contract
damn is Van the one who killed Miho in her past life
also pretty meh for me, I don't care about the action, but I'm glad to see a bit more of Eunwoo and also I'm starting to be endeared by Mino
Ep 3 (Mar 14)
why the fuck is there a domestic abuse plotline fucking hell It's like I gotta either watch women being terrorized by men or turn to watch BL where they also sometimes treat women as evil caricatures like I can't
fucking hell and blackmailing her with her nsfw photos too I actually am so fucking annoyed why can't I fucking watch just a fantasy show
this is so fucking sad bro
I love Yeon-ji already
if Yeon-ji or Suryeon actually die or anything I'll be so fucking mad btw
(Linguistics) ahh I love Johan tryna get away with using banmal and referring to Miho as chingus but being shut down lol can't wait to hear him say noona
I don't care about the romantic hints toward Miho and Van whatsoever tbh
(Linguistics) please the way Miho is all wide-eyed and belatedly adds the -yo when she asks if he's really a priest
Johan is so cheeky I love him
Suryeonnnnnn if Bujille does something to her I'm gonna kill this show
nah the better save suryeon
the failed exorcism was pretty cool
This ep finally picked up. I'm glad we get our characters around each other now and some interesting things have started to happen beyond just "oh monster chases Miho and Van saves her." Most of all, I love Johan being daring and cheeky and beautiful and fun and eager.
Not a super big fan of female suffering due to an abusive boyfriend and threats of nudes/nsfw photos being leaked though like I wish it was just something else.
3 eps in a day oof
Ep 4 (Mar 15)
oh was the light-haired guy the other half-demon from the old days
omg the big devil tree-looking monster being maneuvered by Lee Suryeon
I know it's supposed to be funny that Johan was choking while Miho and Van were arguing but :) I dislike such incompetency and callousness for the sake of humour like first of all Johan was trying to help Miho, second of all we're supposed to think Van doesn't gaf but it's not like we're supposed to think Miho is like that too considering she's trying to convince Van to save Suryeon - so it's annoying that she has no worries about Johan
It's so fucking boring that we're on episode 4, both Van and Johan get to do cool action things and even if Johan gets caught, he can hold his ground for a bit with his cool sword, while Miho has yet to even improve in her hiding/escaping/running away techniques despite already being good at fighting and training. If she was at least able to get through to Suryeon with kindness or whatever, that'd be like something but she can't do that either and yells for Van constantly like okay I'm bored
well okay at least she got to speak to Suryeon and I guess some fucking light inside her made the Benjulle disappear
Ah Johan is so irritating when dealing with Van, ah so endearing
oh van calling upon Benjulle again for Suryeon's revenge
heh Van and the Gramma testing each other are so cute
did Johan leave the shrimp croquettes for Miho or is he just gone to the bathroom and will find them gone lol
I don't fully understand why Johan's doing this with Van? to test his strength? and also he wants his name? Edit after reddit thread reading: Someone said he wants to bring out the demon so that he can see if Van can control it enough so that the prophecy of him killing Miho again will come true or not. He left the shrimp croquettes so that she'd be busy eating those and not come looking for the two of them. that makes sense.
oh this is how Van had previously killed her. by his demon side coming out and stabbing her. oof Johan what have you done
A more interesting episode. I wish we got to see the weirdo abusive ex being ripped to shreds at least a little bit or maybe his dead body since we got to see Suryeon's bruised face and her vulnerable photos.
The Johan and Van fighting was pretty cool, one of the action sequences that I thought was actually fun because it involved things more than just chasing or saving Miho.
Also, I'm at least glad that Miho's rich and has connections because otherwise she'd be so fucking useless but then again, she's pretty useless with it too. She didn't seem to give a fuck when Yeomji first came to tell her that Suryeon was being abused, so I didn't think the 'empathy and kindness' would be her forte the way it is for so many female leads but then after she saw the state Suryeon was in, she did start to care more. I thought her having money would mean maybe she could actually get revenge for Suryeong but in the end, Van had to ask Bujille for help. Miho can't save herself which is irritating still 4 episodes in especially when she's been shown to know how to fight but she also can't help Suryeon much despite her status and money. What the fuck can she do by herself then except whatever pureness is inside her and whatever the prophecy will dictate?
I wish we got better-written, more interesting female characters. Yeom-ji is interesting so far, maybe she'll appear more later
Ep 5 (Mar 15)
blocked by own arm is expected
oh our affable Johan has shaking hands
I love the horror aspect of the tourist murder and organ extraction, please have more scary things
Miho fr went outside by herself in the woods after 1) the Dujille incident and 2) the Van incident? girl you are generally useless, why would you fucking do that
oh she's tracking Van's phone
Miho sounds stupid as hell with the "you promised to protect me and you did :>" like at least make her be like i believe you will overcome it or like something that doesn't sound so naive
and i wish they didn't have a romance because it doesn't make sense
pls not all the girls following behind Johan because he's so beautiful and he's relishing in that for sure oh this priest
Johan's a priest right, he likes girls fawning over him but he's not gonna fall for Miho right? I don't want another romantic line
Suryeon and Yeomji are fr best buddies, so cute I love them T.T
omg give me Johan backstory right now
so the Fox Demon is extracting livers until he finds 'his' and is aided by the evil half-demon? and then sometimes sliced up?
so this is Johan's brother at current time?
Guntan is the other half-demon
no but what exactly did that call that Johan got tell him? that they can't find his brother yet?
we're spending too much time at this orphanage and thinking about what Johan would say to his brother, so I... somehow doubt they'll actually get to meet oh no
girl this is so lol like Sujin's fiance probably gonna die and Johan's brother probably gonna die
like first of all after the lust demons have nearly killed her multiple times + Suryeon's lust demon infested Bunjille due to it trying to Miho, I feel like Miho should have enough brain cells to be like actually don't come near me
oh the husband died but at least Johan got to meet his brother; though he may die soon too who knows
Ep 6 (Mar 15)
more Johan and brother backstory
oh they're adopted by white people who have a sick child.... omg
they're gonna fucking do something to the kids T.T
I don't fully understand what happened but did they try to get Johan's brother's liver for their sick child? is that why he was sick also before they took Johan away? but why was Johan also clutching his stomach and blood on his shirt? Did the operation with the older sibling and white child not work so they tried it with Johan too? Is this white sick child the one searching for the liver now as the Fox Demon or smth? or is it Johan's brother since his liver would be missing, though that doesn't quite make sense with what happened with those other people that the brother worked with right?
ah the siblings are having a heart to heart but uhhh I feel like the "let's stay together" yearning of Johan is not gonna be long-lived
oh fuck the brother is so definitely working for Guntan or something rip
oh did Wonjeong betray Guntan and Van somehow? or accidentally betray them but Guntan believes she did it on purpose?
oh beautiful stag? reminds me of Shadow and Bone
why the hell on earth would Miho leave her friend at the funeral crying alone like
I so don't give a fuck about Van and Miho irritates me
oh the brother Chan-hee can't remember killing those people while he's a lust demon?
ah fuck Chan-hee asking Johan to kill him T.T
bro first I felt emotions for Suryeon and now Johan T.T poor guy
filing a teary Eunwoo on his knees looking desperate for later when I'm not feeling sad for him and he's not a priest
ah fuck desperate, desperate Johan but the lust demon wants to kill Wonjeong/Miho
poor fucking Johan really having to kill his brother
my beloved Johan nooo T.T
wait a second were there scenes after the title card each time?
oh Guntan has a fucking cult
oh what the fuck my beloved Yeom-ji T.T
Also, the thing that Chan-hee was getting and saying "It's not mine" is probably kidney and not liver lol I thought liver because they said that's what the Fox Demon stole but Chan-hee was not that.
Overall Thoughts:
The main female lead was whatever, wish she was just good at something. Whether it be at fighting demons (understandable that she isn't), was fighting back via kindness and empathy (I'll be forever floored that she's apparently feeling soooo much for fucking Van while her reaction to being told about Suryeon's situation was like hmm whatever just tell the cops), actual power due to her status/wealth/connections (but she couldn't even fucking put the abusive ex behind bars and couldn't keep her promise to Suryeon to get revenge for her and then dared to be like 'hmm idk how I feel about this' when Van got him killed), or her smarts (miss girl kept going everywhere in the woods by herself, including in the dark; she couldn't tell her friend to not come to her at night like this). She's not the worst ever because she can still stand up for herself and she has personality but I mourn that they've written her like this. I also just hate that the only other girl we've paid any significant attention to was Suryeon and I had to see her go through an abusive relationship; why can't we get some cool suffering, why do I have to see girls and women be tortured at the hands of men in this way every time?
Van is just fucking boring and I don't care. He's kinda cool but like he's not fun or interesting or endearing or tunning at my heart strings (except him as a child when he was being abused as he was trained T.T)
My beloved Johan <3333 Cha Eunwoo was my main reason for keeping an eye on this show since I watched True Beauty and was into Astro for a few weeks. He did so well <33 I liked his charming, cocky, beautiful character who was so intrigued by everything going on as if he really was 20 and curious about everything but also I liked his apprehension when it came down to it. The storyline with his brother was so T.T He had him for such a short time and it was so sad seeing him trying to do everything to save him and yet having to kill him in the end.
Also curious to see the evil brother half-demon Guntan and his sidekick niece Yeom-ji. They're both pretty cool compared to our 2 main characters. The Certified Noonas were talking about how cool Guntan is and all I could think about was "So, what if he's the devil, Rick? At least the devil has a job. At least he's active in the community." because mans is really active and murderous and a cult leader.
I wish the show flowed better in terms of the sequence of scenes and pacing and the main characters were more intriguing.

reading update
buckle up gang, because I've been reading a HELL of a lot since the last time we did this. let's get right into it...
what have I been reading?
The Tyrant Baru Cormorat (Seth Dickinson, 2020) - Baru Cormorant is, without a doubt, one of the finest examples of a female meow meow ever put to page. and I adore that about her. I love that she keeps getting pieces cut off of her. I love that whenever something doesn't work she goes "but I'm??? a SAVANT???" I love that every other woman who meets her decides they need to fuck or kill her or both. and you know what? I'm very happy with the ending that she got. without giving out any spoilers, I didn't think that something so satisfying for our (nominal) hero was possible in a series this bleak, and I was *breathless* watching Baru pull this final scheme together - while still leaving some loose threads to remind us that the world still has a long way to go. oh and hey - Seth Dickinson? you're the only bitch in the world who knows how to write a genuinely shocking after credits scene anymore. m*rvel needs to take notes.
Sister Outsider (Audre Lorde, 1984) - I recently sat in on a virtual lecture by the brilliant lesbian feminist philosopher Sara Ahmed talking about her recent book Complaint!, during which she recommended everyone go back and read Audre Lorde in times of difficulty. I realized I've never actually read much Lorde to begin with - I've encountered her mostly quoted in other feminist's work, in confusing references to something called "the erotic," and particularly gay poems shared here on tumblr. I've encountered a lot of selected quotes - people like to repeat (or paraphrase) her thoughts on self-care as resistance, how no one lives "single issue lives," and how the master's tools will never dismantle the master's house. for some reason (I know why) I've never seen much discussion of obvious discomfort Lorde caused among (some of) her white feminist contemporaries, and her refusal to let their dismissals of Black women go unchecked and unchallenged. her writing is glorious, clear-eyed and high-minded and filled with a very principled form of hope. it's made me want to be a be more conscientious about how I write in my journal, which I hope can be a lasting legacy.
Night Sky With Exit Wounds (Ocean Vuong, 2016) - this and several other entries on this list are actually just further tribute to Lorde, because the way she wrote about poetry in Sister Outside made me walk over to my silly little local library and scoop up three (THREE!!!) entire poetry collections. I was captivated by Vuong's debut novel On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous and found his poetry similarly... can I say gorgeous? because I want to. in my journal the words I used were "precise and precious" and "a delicate model of a life that I simply must handle with care."
No One Is Talking About This (Patricia Lockwood, 2021) - this is the second book I've read on the recommendation of booktube darling Jack Edwards, and oh BOY is it gutting. Lockwood, who you may know as the owner of beloved cat Miette, has created a DEVASTATING little piece of autofiction that plunges into the brain-addling depths of being Extremely Online before crashing hard on the rocks of all-consuming grief. Lockwood handles both with indescribable skill; I was left self-conscious about my own relationship with the internet and simultaneously sobbing. I must read everything else she's written at once.
Prelude to Bruise (Saeed Jones, 2014) - more poetry! and I really liked this one, which maybe shouldn't be surprising since I also REALLY liked Jones' memoir How We Fight For Our Lives. I've decided that jotting notes in my journal is the best way I know to explain my thoughts on poetry, so what I wrote for this one was "vibes all the way through, evocative of deep soil and emerald plants, choking growth and cold shade." Jones is well-versed in the intertwined evils of racism, homophobia, and toxic masculinity, and they haunt the collection as an endless ache from start to finish.
Bright Dead Things (Ana Limón, 2015) - I will be honest with you, friends: this was perhaps my least favorite of the three poetry collections I grabbed in my post-Lorde fugue state, which might make me a misogynist. but Limón, who grew up in California, talks with great affection about many of the things that were part of my own childhood in Montana: horse trailers and cows and dirt and weeds and the great big open sky. in "During the Impossible Age of Everyone" there's this line that goes "I’m like a fence, or a cow, or that word, yonder" that I found really stirring for reasons I can't quite place. there's also a poem called "Service" that's about pissing inside a garage because a cool dog did it first and I think more poetry should be about shit like that.
Strange Beasts of China (Yan Ge trans. by Jeremy Tiang, 2020) - this book is, as the title might suggest, strange; the beasts in question are in fact humanoid with small physical features that differentiate them from true humans while nonetheless relegating them to being treated as entirely different species who are studied like animals. there's a metaphor about tribalism or xenophobia or SOMETHING going on here, but there's also a failed student of cryptozoology having an absolutely AWFUL time that just keeps getting worse as she is hounded by memories of her mother, an abrasive former professor, her old professor's newest student, and a city filled with beasts and humans who all seem to want something from her. it's a mystery it's a psychological thriller it's a fable. you tell me.
Lesser Known Monsters of the 21st Century (Kim Fu, 2022) - absolutely fucking scrumptious. I DEVOURED this short story collection like a heart-shaped box full of chocolates, delighted even by the ones I wasn't too sure about. I ended up trying to make a list of my favorite stories and ended up jotting down almost all of them. "Pre-Simulation Consultation XF007867" is a TREMENDOUS example of how much story you can pack into nothing but dialogue between two characters. "Scissors" is an old pal of mine that was also featured in the anthology Kink, so erotic it could make you dizzy, and the story "Sandman" shows Fu flexing those same muscles in a much more fantastical manner. how did she make getting filled up with sand and put to sleep hot? idk, but I want in. "Time Cubes" is an absolute peak dystopian short, "Liddy, First to Fly" is a great instance of the monstrous female puberty trope that I simply adore, and "The Doll" is a perfect little spooky story. and the final piece, "Do You Remember Candy," was somehow the most haunting of them all, leaving me perplexed and sad in a way that I never would have expected from the premise. go read this, y'all.
We Do This 'Til We Free Us: Abolitionist Organizing and Transforming Justice (Mariame Kaba, edited by Tamara K. Nopper, 2021) - all I need to say about this, I think, is that ever since I read this I've been starting like half my sentences with "okay, so in We Do This 'Til We Free Us -" because it's just relevant to... everything? literally everything. Kaba gets it, she gets everything, and it's so inspirational to see her work collected in such a way that you can really appreciate the way she insists on organizing as a collective and communal process, always passing credit around to the younger generation and those who came before. her belief in hope as a practice moved me, her thoughts on the difference between activists and organizers were illuminating and resonant, the way she talks about restorative justice as something drawn out and demanding and hard are REAL and affirming that the work is both demanding and worth it. reading this is so revitalizing, I cannot recommend it enough.
The School for Good Mothers (Jessamine Chan, 2022) - I'll be real: I'm trying to keep up with a LOT of new releases right now, and at times it feels exhausting. but holy shit on a bike is it worth it keep up with novels like this. I don't know if School for Good Mothers will be widely classed as science fiction, but I think it is in the most affectionate sense. like an old school sci-fi story, School for Good Mothers probes existing technology for the horrific turns it could take without much pushing: after a horrific day in which stressed, depressed, and recently divorced mother Frida Liu leaves her toddler unattended for two hours, she's arrested and subjected to invasive surveillance in every corner of her home. when her behavior is deemed less than satisfactory she's sent away to the titular school, an isolating year-long program meant to "fix" mothers deemed unfit by the state. at the school, mothers who have lost custody of their human children are retrained using advanced robotic doll-children straight out of the uncanny valley - the dolls are programmed with realistic child behavior and feel real pain and fear, but are treated as objects by instructors who simultaneously scold the mothers for failing to connect with these facsimiles as they would with their actual children. but while the tech is (very slightly) exaggerated, Chan's conflict comes from very real issues. it's obvious within the narrative that the state's idea of "good" mothers excludes mothers who are poor, working class, or otherwise unable to stay home with their children all day; women who aren't straight; women who were raised in cultures that aren't American; women who are mentally ill; women who ever feel angry or lustful or tired or anything but perfectly quantifiable maternal adoration and servitude. it's noted in the narrative that most of the "bad" mothers are Black or Latina, that middle class "bad" white mothers cozy up to the guards, that Frida is the only Asian "bad" mother and is in a unique position because of it. it's a story about criminalization and self-surveillance and unwinnable systems, and it's utterly devastating. as you can probably tell by the sheer length of this segment, I loved it.
Playing the Whore: The Work of Sex Work (Melissa Gira Grant, 2014) - sometimes I like to play a little game where I imagine what I would put on a syllabus for a class on like, a college class for people who have sort of locked down feminism 101 and ready to start getting past that. some other entries, I think, would be Women, Race, and Class by Angela Davis, and Mikki Kendall's Hood Feminism, and as you've probably guessed by now, Playing the Whore is also joining the list. all the best writing on sex work comes from people who have actually done it (you should check out Revolting Prostitutes by Molly Smith and Juno Mac, btw), and Grant does a great job laying out exactly why. there are so many interesting points here about the ways in which sex workers are stripped of humanity and autonomy by anti-sex work feminists who claim to be fighting against exactly that; it's really a must-read for anyone who wants to consider themselves allied with sex workers because of how well it underlines the deeply hurtful stereotypes and projections that can infect so many conversations about sex work.
Woman, Eating (Claire Kohda, 2022) - a very millennial little vampire novel, following a biracial British woman who's trying to start an art career, gain independence from her mother, and stave off her constant cravings for human blood. you know, relatable! like any good vampire novel, there's a lot of metaphor - Lydia's "human" and "demon" sides cause her as much internal anguish as the mixed heritage of her Japanese human father half-white vampire mother - while also just very much being about a fucked up little creature of the night having a fucked up little time. it's about coming of age and finding yourself and repression and self-loathing but also wanting to bite someone's neck and drink their blood so SO bad.
I didn't do the bingo sheet this month because uuuuh I didn't want to so c'est la vie!!

The Opera in the HNL Control Room Video Hints to S4
I don't know if this has been done before or not but I did this right after the tweets dropped, but I wasn't posting then so I'm posting it now LOL (better late than never right?)
On May 5th, 2021, one day before the May 6 release of the ""Eleven are you listening?" teaser (002/004), the Stranger writers tweeted this:
Tumblr media
with the accompanying video:
youtube
The opera that's playing in the background is "Quand Le Bien-Aime Reviendra" which translates from French to English as "When The Beloved Will Return"
Tumblr media
I’ve also seen it translated as "When My Sweetheart Returns To Me”. (any french speakers please correct me/google translate if it’s wrong)
Next I looked up what this opera's plot is about, because there has to be a reason they picked this specific thing to play in the background, nothing they do is random xD
Tumblr media
At first when I saw father and daughter detail I thought of Hopper and El, but I reallllyyyy don't think it's referencing them. For one, El won't end up with Mike because he's gay and in love with Will, so El can't fulfill the "marrying her lover" part of this story. There's also no references to Hopper's death/reappearance in here if he is the father character.
It's the daughter's lover that disappears and returns after fighting his enemy, and the daughter goes "mad" thinking he has died. Germeuil (the lover) is "the beloved" the opera title refers too. The father is not a super important part of the picture here. This opera is more about a couple than a father/daughter or parent/child.
So that leave's us with two possibilities for who this opera could be referencing:
1. Joyce is Nina, and Hopper is Germeuil.
OR
2. Will is Nina, and Mike is Germeuil.
3. A third possibility is that the Opera references BOTH Jopper and Byler in s4, or just some aspects of the opera's storyline for each couple.
Possibility 1: The opera references Jopper
Germeuil (Hopper) fights his enemy and disappears:
Hopper has already disappeared in a fight with the enemy. He was fighting the Russians & the upside down during all of s3, and he disappears or during the final battle of s3, with Joyce literally watching the fight between Hopper and the Russian happen right as she's trying to close the gate.
Nina (Joyce) goes mad and forgets details of the traumatic event:
Just like I mentioned in my Victor Creel Theories post, there are several hints throughout the show to mental instability running in Joyce's family, and Nina is described as going "mad" when her lover (Germeuil/Hopper) disappears and she thinks he has died. Everyone thinks Hopper is dead, Joyce included. It's not out of the realm of possibilities that Hopper's death will send Joyce spiraling, and cause her to forget the details of the event due to psychological distress.
Possibility 2: The opera references Byler
Germeuil (Mike) fights his enemy and disappears:
Mike wasn’t seen in the recent st4 sneak peek teaser (but neither were Jonathan, Argyle, and Joyce (unknown if Will is the one in front of the burning car but I think it is), and Finn was the only person who posted a picture of the clock with the caption “In the upside down, meanwhile…” and not “Meanwhile, in the upside down…”, like all the other cast members and official ST accounts. He never fixed the caption, which leads me to believe it wasn’t a mistake, but rather a clue. I wonder what this means for Mike’s storyline this season - does he get stuck in the upside down somehow?
Germeuil (Mike) fighting the enemy probably refers to some upside down monster, and he gets taken to the upside down during a battle or something.
And Nina (Will) goes mad and forgets details of the traumatic event:
Nina is described as "forgetting aspects of the traumatic incident in a manner consistent with a diagnosis of psychogenic amnesia"
"Psychogenic amnesia or dissociative amnesia is a memory disorder characterized by sudden retrograde episodic memory loss, said to occur for a period of time ranging from hours to years. More recently, "dissociative amnesia" has been defined as a dissociative disorder" characterized by retrospectively reported memory gaps. These gaps involve an inability to recall personal information, usually of a traumatic or stressful nature"
There's a popular theory out there that Will has Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), and while DID is not the same thing as dissociative amnesia, there is the same dissociative aspect in both where the person represses/forgets memories that are traumatic to them. I recommend you read @kaypeace21's theory on this here and here.
If Mike was to disappear into the Upside down, it would certainly take a big toll on Will, which may cause him to go "Mad" (again hints of mental instability in Joyce's family, and Will is Joyce's son) This event may also bring out a more hardcore and powerful side of Will, and could trigger memories of his own life that he has forgotten. It could also be what makes Will face the lab/the monster this season.
Noah said this would be Will's darkest season, and my mind immediately goes "darker than getting possessed by an evil inter-dimensional monster who wants to kill everyone? How is that gonna work?"
But this theory is pretty dark, and it just might fit the description.
It also might fit in with the theory that Will may be one of the test subjects in the "Eleven are you listening?" teaser, which goes along with the theory that Will may have a connection to the lab beyond his relation to it in s2, which I discussed in my post about how Will, Sara, and El are all connected.
Anyways, this is all just speculation right now since nothing is confirmed, but it's interesting to think about how this opera might hint to s4 storylines.
