people have pointed this out before but I love how the death note jdrama highlights how needlessly cruel L is capable of being..... calling Light (and the other Kira suspects) early in the investigation to falsely accuse him of being Kira just to see how he'd react, taunting Light relentlessly while he was imprisoned and interrogated, and of course the mock execution. all while knowing no one can really stop him. the jdrama really said "btw don't forget this guy's an ASSHOLE"

“then so be it” ⋆ red haired shanks
Tumblr media
content & warnings: female reader, she/her pronouns, black-coded reader, conflict angst, fluff
author’s note: opla shanks is sexy, tbh so is animanga shanks 😹 so u can imagine which ever
word count: 1.5k
He means well.
That’s what you believe, and when he does things that chip away at that thought, it's what you say aloud.
You feel silly. because when you try and face reality with the way Shanks disrespects you, you hear a voice in the back of your head pull up that same excuse.
Descending a path of overthinking never helps you. All it does is make you panic and question your sanity.
You’d been in a long-term relationship with the notorious Red Haired Shanks, captain of the aptly named Red Haired Pirates and it was never going to be a walk in the park.
He drops by when he can to your home island, even if it irritates his crew members but he can easily pacify them by making a detour to the local tavern and having some alone time with you for a few nights before he's off heading to whatever journey to god knows where.
You reminisce on how you two met.
Your village had always been under an oppressive tyrant's rule but it was lifted thanks to Red Haired pirates. Now your home was back to normal and free.
Apparently, that’s what Emperors of the Sea could just do.
It was slightly embarrassing for you to admit to Shanks later on that you had fallen for him the moment you saw him. How cliché.
But as soon as you had given him the green light for him to pursue you, he made sure everybody knew you were his.
*
"Jeez, what's with you Captain? You look like shit." Lucky commented after Shanks had been uncharacteristically quiet for the last few days.
"Always can count on you for honesty, can't I buddy?" Shanks chuckled as he straightened his posture slightly.
"You and the missus on bad terms or what?" Beckman questioned as he leaned his elbows against the bar and tilted his head back.
"How’d you know, you sneaky bastard?"
"Written all over your face. What's the damage?"
"Stood her up." Shanks said, thumping his head on the counter.
"For how long?"
"Waiter said the sweet thing had been sitting there for two hours. Christ, I’ve never fucked up this bad."
"Damn, you missed your anniversary cos you were out drinking with us?"
"I’m a dirtbag." Shanks groaned, still wallowing in his guilt.
There was a slight commotion and clamouring of other pirates at the front of the tavern, Lucky turned his head to see what all the noise was about.
"Oooooweeeee!"
"Smokin' hot!"
Lucky’s eyes immediately widened when he realized who it was.
"Uh Cap, you're gonna wanna see this."
"I don't wanna look at some random broads, Lucky. I’m already in the doghouse and all I can think of is my beloved-"
"She’s right there!" Lucky exclaimed.
Shanks pulled a face and squinted his eyes at the absurdity of the suggestion you were even here.
"Quit pullin' my leg Lucky. You ain’t funny."
"I’m dead serious, Cap! Look!"
Shanks did a spit take when he saw none other than his girlfriend, stood at the entrance with three other gorgeous women.
All in the most showy, dressy attire you could think of.
"What the hell is she doing here?" Yasopp questioned.
It was common knowledge that you stuck on your island. And never left.
There was countless men fawning over the four women, but you in particular since you were sporting a “Come and get me look”
You strut your way towards the bar where Shanks and Lucky were sat. Deliberately swinging your hips, running your fingers through your hair and licking your teeth which only seemed to drive the men more wild.
Countless offers to pay for your drink as they mobbed around you.
Shanks however, was not particularly impressed by the series of events currently unfolding in front of him.
"How are you even here right now?" He questioned, elbow propped against the bar.
"I’m sorry darling, have we met somewhere before?" You asked, in a saccharinely sweet tone as you looked at him through your eyelashes.
The Red Haired pirates burst into absolute hysterics, banging tables, spilling drinks and jeering.
"SHE GOT YOU GOOD SHANKS!"
He simply smirked and turned his head to face his raucous crew members.
If you wanted to get your own back, then so be it. It wasn't like he didn't deserve it.
*
"If that bastard thinks he can CAST ME to the side he's got another thing coming." You fumed, as you ransacked through your closet while your best friend Max sat on the ottoman in your bedroom, cackling.
"You two really are made for each other." She remarked as she puffed out the smoke from her cigarette. "I’ve never seen a man who can fire you up that easily."
"I told you no smoking in my house idiot, go to the window before you make the whole place smell gross."
"Fine." She said, as she got up begrudgingly.
She didn't put up a fight since anybody who knew you and was granted access into your abode knew it was pristine.
"I’m gonna look for the sluttiest dress I own."
"And what?"
"Give him some of his own medicine." You hissed. "He getting way too comfortable. He thinks just because I let him do whatever he can neglect me."
"I don't think he's neglecting you." She replied. "You and I both know he's crazy about you, and that your relationship was never going to be like a normal one what with him being one of the four emperors of the sea."
"I don't need rationality at the moment, Max!" You screeched.
*
He dragged you outside of the tavern and turned to face you.
Shanks never got angry. But when he did, it was spine chilling and it took everything in you not to scuttle away like a scared critter.
You were inebriated, struggling to stand upright.
"I let you have your lil payback but why are you dancing with other men in front of my face?" He questioned as he furrowed his brows together.
"Oh, now you care."
"Y/N, don't be silly! When have I not cared? Is this about the anniversary?"
You struggled to come up with an answer on the spot.
"There’s more to it than that Shanks, and you know it! Yeah, that anniversary date meant a lot to me but you blow me off all the time. And don't use your job crap because a good chunk of your time is spent partying it up and drinking with your buddies!"
"I am only doing what you asked." Shanks sighed, anger dissipating away. "I asked you to come with me, does that ring any bells? And you said no. I try to visit you when I can."
"What? So its just all my fault? Yeah I wanted to stay home cos I have a life outside of you!”
"I know." Shanks said, defeatedly.
You swallowed thickly as you felt a lump form in your throat and tears prickle at your waterline.
"I don't know why I insisted...on being with you." You began, unable to face him. "You told me so, huh Shanks?" You said with a wry chuckle as he gazed at you.
"I didn't say that to be a smart ass. I love you. So much. With every fibre of my being." He said, as he moved closer to cup the side of your face with one hand.
He could be romantic when he wanted but he liked to get under your skin, as he grabbed hold of your jaw and smooshed your cheeks together, making your lips pout.
“Shanks, you’re not funny…!” You barked, sounding ridiculous as you struggled to pull out of his grip.
He let go and chuckled.
“I’m sorry, baby. You’re easy to tease.” He scoffed, then pulled you right against his chest.
"You’re making it worse." You murmured as you felt yourself crumble internally as he rubbed your back gently and kissed the top of your head.
"Then so be it.”
“…Shanks.”
You leaned up to brush your lips against his but he was unreceptive.
“I wouldn’t feel right, baby.” He said gently with a smile, pulling away from the kiss. “You’re drunk. Let’s get you to bed.”
“But…I came with my friends.”
“I’ll take care of it, I promise. We’ll drop them home. I’ll let you sleep it off too.” He said, reassuringly as the two of you began to walk back to the tavern.
Soon enough, you rested in the bed of captain’s cabin’s of the Red Force. Mind drifting off to sleep.
He knew you well, despite barely being around. He was a smart guy, despite it all.
He knew you were a sleepy drunk.
“I’m lowdown and no good for an angel like you. But, I’ll do my best to make it up to you.” He murmured as he sat on the edge of the bed, taking your hand in his and running his thumb across the hollow of your knuckles.
You were half asleep and bleary eyed, but his gentle tone and rocking of the ship was enough to lull you back to sleep.
“I mean it.”
You squeezed his hand gently, making him smile. He then pressed his lips against the crown of your head and made his way out.

I have a question; Why do comic book male nerds hate lgbt+ and poc representation in comics?
Like, I've been a superhero comic nerd for years (reading whatever I can) and for example I've know that Harley was bisexual for years and she and Ivy had some sort of underlying relationship brewing? And this is like just news to them?
Like why are they so critical about anything that doesn't represent straight white maleness? And why do they think that manga is the replacement for their straght white male fulfilment they once got from comics? As if alt kids, weird kids, lgbtq+ kids and poc kids weren't like the main people reading manga. If I remember, comic book nerds had a controversy where they thought manga was all about hentai in like 2016 and they kept bashing animanga fans, why are y'all pretending that you're fans all of a sudden because american comics with mediocre stories (e.g the Joker lost all his jazz and personally, he's really boring?? And yet yall would swear up and down that he's the best villain when Dr. FREEZE, PENGUINE, RIDDLER AND BANE LITERALLY EXIST. Petition to never make another Joker movie again. Please) are pandering to other people??
And let me tell you something, manga is more queer, much more progressive than a lot of these comics y'all are running from. It does not majorly pander to YOU. It never will, so don't get too comfortable here and start complaining when you realize they don't care about you nor do they pander to you. Even something as hypermasculine as Jojo is one of the most queer and expressive shit in shounen I've ever read and they don't shy away from it.
Manga is not your escape to be bigoted. Either y'all stomach and adapt representation like queer people had to deal with homophobia for years or shut up. Stop acting like comic books became boring when queer folks and poc came into play, they were getting boring long before, your writers just tried to use our community as a last ditch attempt to save themselves.

hello again it’s me, the One who misses Jaeyeol LOL
thanks for answering my rant ask and i don’t mind if you rant back at me 😂 it feels good, like i’m not just talking to myself in my head but to a friend who feels the same way as i do.
like YES PTJ i love some of the new characters introduced like johan and samuel but with all these new characters added into the story, it’s like the old cast got thrown away (minus zack and vasco etc because they’re always in the mix for some reason, AND NOT JAY ahem i shall rein myself back for some semblance of sanity lol) and i’m like.. why so many characters man? UGH.
ALSO ALSO ALSO what’s with all these middle aged looking characters suddenly entering the scene with a [name] and [age] AND THEY DON’T EVEN LOOK THEIR AGE LIKE
new middle age looking man: blah blah
[name] [16] LIKE BITCH WHAT DO U MEAN THAT GUY’S 16??? HE LOOKS MORE LIKE A 40 TO ME LOL i feel like ptj just gave up making the characters look their age because these ppl definitely do not look 16, 17, etc. or did he even try in the first place? anyway
like this story just became all about gangs at the point where i stopped lol like what happened to his convenience store job (i guess he quit once he entered workers? maybe i missed that part), what happened to the mom visiting every so often (like wouldn’t she worry about her son when he disappeared god knows where?), what happened to attending school during the back end portion? WHERE ARE THE PARENTS/ADULTS? this is like tokyo revengers all over again 😂 idk.. i just wish that it didn’t have to be all about gangs? like i’m fine with the hostel and god dogs portion but after that it’s like i couldn’t give a shit anymore 🥲 and daniel doesn’t even seem like himself anymore 😭 i miss when all he had to care about was making friends, memories and letting his mom live a good life…
i wish ptj just kept it simple with a few gangs, having to keep the secret about having 2 bodies, why crystal has 2 bodies as well, normal school activities/relationships (i keep fantasising about a chapter with them playing some king’s card game where the person who draws the king card can do anything/order anyone to do anything they wanted for a turn like that Baka to Test episode, man that was hilarious LOL like if joy got picked as the king and she would probably have done something to daniel and jay had to step in HAHAHA oop my shipper is showing) and it would have still been a great series. now it feels all muddled 😩
yeah.. oh yes please let me join your prayers circle!!! PTJ U MUST BRING JAY BACK AND GIVE HIM THE ARC AND CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT HE DESERVES!!!!!!!!! I WILL NEVER REST UNTIL U DO!!!! 😤😤😤
good timezones anon who misses jay! i'm glad you find these convos fun hehe i only have one single friend who Gets lookism to talk to so this is really nice for me too
new characters: i think one of the reasons why characters like johan and samuel are so popular are bc they have a backstory that's actually fleshed out really well? like even jake and big deal they had like a redemption/backstory arc (personally i like jake more than samuel tho. i want to punch samuel but his tits would probably break my fists) and i think that's why they're liked more than new characters like, for example, ryuhei. personally i think ryuhei is decent looking but idgaf about him yk.
the age thing: YOU'RE SO RIGHT like no way samuel is 19?? no way that bitch is only one year older than me AT MOST. or maybe he's got the daddy energy coz he's tall, is The fanservice character at this point, and has muscles n big booba. still wanna punch him tho. the ogs being 16/17 international age i can believe, and the anime also made them look younger in a way? especially duke i miss that funky lil guy. i hope his music career is going well
all about gangs: i see what you mean but this is also Animanga Logic right. adults are kinda irrelevant if you're the overpowered protagonist but at the same time i get u honestly i feel like jay's own father has more plot relevance than him at this point 💀 jay vs h group arc WHERE. jay and crystal interaction WHERE. their parallel could be so interesting but i'm not getting into that today i'll like. explore it in a fic or something
plot: i think to us it feels like ptj kinda lost sight of the meaning of 'lookism' in relation to the plot, but i'm sure ptj knows where he's going with the plot, and i trust him to give us more good chapters. for now us jay hong stans are gonna have to make content to feed each other
welcome to the jay return arc prayer circle
Tumblr media
ptj if you won't give jay the backstory and character development arc he deserves i'll do it myself 😤 i'll catch up to canon and write that jay vs h group arc myself 😤
hope this helped!

Do you have favorite anime shows?
Yes! I used to be super into anime a few years ago, but now my interest and attention span has kinda dwindled so i'm not exactly up to date to the new hot animes (i do plan however on starting both Frieren and Dungeon Meshi)
If i have to make a list of my favourite animes, those would be (putting them not in a [most favourite-least favourite] order)
1- Shingeki no Kyojin. Hooly shit i think it was the first anime i seriously watched. The SnK manga was also the first one i ever purchased at like ~11. I just have so many good memories related to that manga
2- DOROHEDORO. God i. I think that animanga was tailor-made for me. It is extremely gorey, but also in a non edgy way. The tone is very lighthearted and the entirety of it's cast has it's spotlight. Also the character design is top notch and the ost makes me go insane
3- Tokyo Ghoul! Another childhood classic of mine (but that's more the manga than the anime) again i have so many memories about it including me doing my ghoul sona again at age 11/12. Good times
4- Pluto! I have never ever watched Astroboy in my entire life BUT i was also a huge fan of Urasawa's 20th Century Boys and Billy Bat so i decided to read it and when the anime adaptation came out i was "oh. They couldn't make it more perfect". Seriously tho, the animation, the story, the characters, the critique of the gulf war (since it was first released in the middle of it)... it couldn't be more perfect. Also Atom looks like my cousin so he's my special little boy
5- Shinsekai Yori. This is a weird one. I don't think that like. I'd actually recomend it to someone else. It's extremely slow paced and the whole subject matter is heavy. It's a dystopian novel-turned anime and i think that the pacing does get affected negatively by this. But if you're in for an heavy watch. Watch it. Please. The finale is one of the most poignant finales i've ever seen in an anime and i still think about it years later
5- Akira! While again this is one of those adaptations where the story had to be cut due to the rest of the manga still not being written, it holds up extremely well. Also the animation is gorgeous and last year i traveled to Rome to watch it at the Space Cinema for it's 35th anniversary and it was a spiritual experience. I do not think i ever looked away from the screen, even if for a split second
6- Vinland Saga! I don't have much to say about it especially to avoid spoilers since the anime is not over yet, but god. Thorfinn. I thought people were exaggerating when talking about his character development but he is genuinely wonderfully written. Also i loved the way season two ended with the poem being played while showing the characters of both the past and the present (and i don't remember if it was there in the manga? I think it was? But also the anime version is more cinematic for well. Obvious reasons)
7- Re:Zero! One of those things that i definitely shouldn't have watched as a preteen lmao. I am not a coneisseur of isekais, so i can't really fully appreciate the subversion aspect of it, but i love Subaru's character and the witch lore intrigues me so much, so if i ever get my hands of the novels i'll read them
8- Higurashi I do know that the anime compared to the novels absolutely sucks (iirc they cut a lot of content?) but i think it upholds very well on it's own (not like the umineko anime lmao). Also i had watched it when i was going through a very hard period of my life, so it's extremely dear to me
And that's it for now! Probably if you'd asked me this a few years back i would have replied with more shounens a la jjk and bnha, which i do still like (jjk way more than bnha) and for whom i had a hyperfixation on it, but again my tastes have immensely shifted and i think that overall these animes have made way more impact on me. Other two animes i really enjoy are FMA and HXH, but again while i recognize that FMA is a wonderful story and i do rank it quite highly it doesn't quite scratch my itch, and i constantly switch forth between loving and hating HXH (mainly due to the fandom's obnoxiousness in treating it like a piece of russian literature)
Have a nice day anon!!!

wait yeah so by now we all know hori has some fucked up issues about women, but tbh looking back now his oversexualisation of the female characters seems in a way more insidious that the 'usual' fanservicey stuff in shonen?? let me explain, usually it's in-your-face stuff, some cheap jokes, big boobs, horny shot angles - which of course is bad too, and it's prevailing in the animanga industry. and we have some of those things in heroaca as well, but there's also something kinda subtler, and it's about the overall designs. I know it's been talked about how hori uses quirks as an excuse to sexualise women, but it's usually about their outfits (momo, hagakure), or personalities (toga, midnight) but actually sometimes he specifically chooses quirks and hero outfits that are too suspiciously connected to horny/kinky tropes and fetishes (miruko, mt lady, the pussycats, and the worst offence imo, tsuyu). like at this point I don't believe his choices are meant to be innocent and not him managing to put hentai tropes into a shonen by not being overt about it.
This requires a deeper dive than I have brain power for. The thing is, I'm really used to ecchi elements in shounen. Naruto had some, I'm a big soul eater fan which had a massive problem on this topic esp with underage girls, and so did fairy tail. A lot of that was played for bigger laughs than BNHA is doing it, sure, but I think BNHA started out doing it the "haha funny pervert" style too. But then you get shit like being able to see Miruko's labia as she's being maimed, and how sexualized Toga's maiming was, or the focus on her in pain, etc, and the various justifications for sexualizing her. I don't think it's uniquely malicious, again, because I also remember Soul Eater (is fire force any better? if anyone has read it or seen it, chime in) doing a lot of this.
But you're right in the fact that everything he does is a choice. All the quirk justification is "in-text". It's not real, what's real is for Horikoshi to justify sexualizing his characters like this. He does it, it's obvious, and so are his kinks. He definitely has some weird fem-dom and humilation thing, especially when it comes to older women. Or like you mentioned, Tsuyu and Toga's sexualized vomiting moments are a thing, likely thinly veiled jokes for showing attractive girls spewing fluids. A lot of this, I want to point out, is by design in the industry too. Manga attracts "incels", by which I mean socially-maladjusted and awkward, isolated young men who have the talent, drive, and time to spend their teen years drawing away instead of socializing. Women are still a rarity, especially in shounen, despite profilic women mangakas. These young men start off in manga early because so often they're snatched right out of college or highschool, so the few years where they should be getting over that nerd shit of "girls don't like me and I don't know how to talk to them" and becoming actual adults are stolen by work hours of upwards sixty or so a week. And so they stay like that. Awkward. Isolated. Maybe even resentful because all the 'milestones' of heterosexual manhood are further and further away because of their schedules. Their social circles become other people like them, and they can't get new ones because of the sheer number of working hours, and at some point being a socially-awkward nerd becomes a badge of pride rather than a case of arrested development that they don't get to change because of their careers. So, yeah, Horikoshi is fucking weird about women. He's told us he considers himself a pervert, is shy enough he wears masks... this is a person who never grew into actual adulthood, which means facing your insecurities. He's not the only one, the industry is structured in a way that men like this are created and perpetuated by exploitation of their labor.
Men like Horikoshi get to stay creepy, repressed manboys because their adulthood is typically constrained in tiny little rooms where they push out draft after draft, their social circle being a rotating circle of assistants who are usually just like them, with the occasional woman (and I do want to say there's absolutely a "female" version of this sort of thing. Just wade into horny anitwitter and look at all the yaoi shota art and you'll see my point about isolated, maladjusted women) joining them. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if one of the reasons Horikoshi isn't stretching the manga out is because he's feeling the keen pressure of time. By his age, I believe Masahi Kishimoto was married, and Kishimoto notoriously fucked up the sequel to his own manga as an apology to his children due to him missing so much of their childhood. Horikoshi just turned 35. He's devoted his entire 20s and now half his 30s to drawing manga, struck gold in 2014, but it cost him any semblance of a normal life. Given the examples of the men around him (like Oda not living with his family and the sheer insanity of his schedule), Kishimoto having to apologize in-manga to his kids for paternal absenteeism, the HxH/YuYU author having health issues and limiting work, the many examples of overwork death... Being an SJ mangaka isn't conducive to a healthy or likely happy life, especially if he ever wants to stop being a reclusive man. This is just speculation on my part, but I have a feeling that's why we are approaching the end.

TOP 5 CHARAS AND 5 REASONS WHY YOU LIKE THEM GO GO GO
AHHHH OKAY OKAY. I LITERALLY LIT UP WHEN I SAW THIS IN MY INBOX YOU HAVE NOOOO IDEA THANK YOU SO MUCH ah okay. i hope its ok if i leave it to just one or two of my fav things about them though cause NFHBGDF I DONT WANT THIS TO BE MILES LONG i hope you understand!!!!!
1. LIGHT YAGAMI
now. i dont think anybodys surprised. MFKSKFMFMHNGJN honestly, though i dont care about death note much at all anymore, hes like gum stuck to my shoe and i just cannot get him off no matter what i do. i tell myself that i dont give a fuck about anything in death note until i see him on my dash and i go apeshit. hes completely changed me and how i approach analyzing complex characters. i think hes the first character that ive ever actually cared about in that sense? the sense where i look into every detail about him i mean. its really just so fun...
my absolute favorite thing about him... i really love how funny he is. this isnt to say hes a humorous guy im saying hes funny as in he makes such stupid decisions and its hilarious to see him struggle so hard constantly. the entire ending of death note is fucking insane it sends me into laughing fits every time. theres so many funny moments in death note despite it being considered a psychological horror animanga because of him being a genuine fucking idiot 24/7. hes supposed to be a genius but he truly does lack so much self awareness sometimes.
if you wanna know more of my thoughts in depth, i have an analysis of him here that you can check out :) ID LOVE FEEDBACK ON IT so if you disagree with me or have questions etc feel free to shoot an ask and ill try to answer!!!!!
2. GORO AKECHI
god... hes perfect. he and light are on the same level of favoritism for me, dont let the numbers fool you. hes hands down my absolute favorite in persona 5 and it blows my mind knowing that the majority of the fandom feels the exact opposite or are torn over him ITS ALMOST FRUSTRATING because its mostly due to the amount of misinformation/mischaracterization spread about him!!!! but no he just happens to be the best written character in that piece of shit of a game! MFDKDHNGJJ AND PERSONA FANS CANT COMPREHEND GOOD WRITING
my favorite thing about him.. i love how hes written. and i know this sounds really basic and predictable, but its the truth i just really love his growth as a character, especially in royals third semester when he gets a chance to properly shine and oh my god! did he shine! hes literally so perfect in 3rd sem
theres just something so captivating about an angry teenager who truly thinks of his life as worthless and doesnt bother making bonds with others because of it who suddenly finds himself questioning his choices of self isolation when he finally meets a group of people he can resonate with and feel seen by. a group of people who are willing to reach out and listen to him despite his past mistakes. theres just something so perfect about seeing that same angry teenager want to take his life into his own hands and strive to grow... that same angry teenager who didnt value his own life start to see meaning in things because of bonds...
i love goro so so much he makes me so emotional if it isnt obvious enough NGFHGDGBDFH I THINK ABOUT HIM A LOT. i think about him healing so much.
(btw im working on an analysis for him atm thats similar to lights so! stay tuned for that dropping when its done in like a million years NFHFBGFHDBGHF)
3. AKIRA KURUSU
DAMN 2 PERSONA 5 CHARACTERS IN A ROW
OKAY SO i know Technically akira is supposed to be a blank slate silent protagonist but let me tell you THATS SO FAR FROM WHAT HE ACTUALLY IS. IM NEVER FORGIVING ATLUS FOR TRYING TO SHOVE HIM INTO THE SILENT PROTAG BOX AND NOT LETTING HIM BE HIS OWN CHARACTER! BECAUSE HE HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BE AMAZINGGGGG ugh sorryfor caps im so fuckng mad MKDFKMGMHMGMG
it really does get on my nerves how because of atlus trying to make him a silent protag, the majority of the p5 fandom sees him as that. blank slate. nothing. when in reality he very much has a ton of spunk and id argue that hes his own character entirely if you just look a little deeper past the surface Like... its not even that hard to see personality in him. beneath the mask is literally his theme song, have you Not seen the lyrics to that? HAVE YOU NOT SEEN THE ENTIRE THEME OF THE GAME? this little dude is so traumatized and angry at those who wronged him (aka the justice system! shitty adults!) and people have the nerve to say hes the worst persona protagonist? lmfao
my favorite thing about akira is how he looks like a cat and how cocky and annoying he can be.. he is such a jokester hes the absolute dumbest. i enjoy this silly guy. *holds him under the armpits like a longcat*
4. SHIGEO KAGEYAMA
ahhh mob. he makes me do this -> :)
mp100, of course, changed my fucking life. mp100 is the reason i am the way i am and though all the characters are incredibly relatable and memorable and i cherish them so dearly, i, like most people, cherish mob the absolute most. seriously his strength really is incredible and though hes just a fictional character he is so inspiring and i wish to carry as much gentleness in my heart as he does.
im so so proud of him on his development he started off so.. i wouldnt say he was weak, but i would say that he lacked experience. he lived in his own little bubble not knowing what the world was like and throughout the story he grew to learn so much.. he learned to make such. mature decisions at such a young age. hes so so wise. hes so powerful not only because of his psychic powers but because of his compassion for others. he can befriend even the worst of people...
my favorite thing about him is his determination to become the best version of himself he can be. and also his relationship with ritsu (not me, i mean ritsu kageyama <3) i always gravitate towards siblings in fiction because im an only child and well <3 i dont experience that. so i like projecting onto them GHBFBBHFG they care so much for each other.. sniffle sniffle
5. RYO ASUKA
ok im going to be real even though im into devilman i dont have much of a reason to enjoy him this much. i just think hes hilarious and really cool and his satan form gives me gender envy. i love it when he commits random easily avoidable acts of violence for no reason at all its just because he wants to. and thats just fine. i think he can kill people and get away with it because hes ryo asuka. gay rights

just a lil “if ash lived” headcanon that i need to unload somewhere bc i've been holding it in for a long time
- set within the manga ‘verse
- takes place when ash and eiji are in their early 30s... so around the mid 1990s?
- i don’t get the weird animanga trope where older = longer hair, so they’re gonna look the same... maybe with slightly shorter hair bc they get regular haircuts now
- (note: i've always interpreted long-haired eiji as symbolic of the fact that he couldn't move on from ash’s death)
Tumblr media
- ash and eiji will continue living in the states, idk if still in NYC or somewhere else. they’ll move around a lot though.
- ash will mostly remain underground as he had to fake his death after lao’s stab, but he does it in a "hiding in plain sight" kind of way. only a handful of people know he’s still alive.
- ash spends most of his time on the computer, mostly coding, hacking, being a nerd, among other fun stuff.
- he also takes on “jobs” anonymously, and occasionally from max (who’s still into investigative journalism) when he needs info that can only be obtained through Dubious Means.
- i also like to think that ash's a bit of a hacker robin hood lol. but he isn’t doing it purely out of the goodness of his heart, as part of it is a subconscious need to atone for his “sins” and cleanse the gnawing and persistent feeling of shame that gets amplified when he’s around eiji.
- also whatever he’s up to these days would ofc still be Highly Dangerous and Illegal, but it keeps him busy and would sate the part of him that’s still hungry for adrenaline without him having to engage in stuff like active bloodshed or substance abuse. basically that’s how i imagine he’d try to cope with life the only way he knows.
- eiji continues to do photography and other part time gigs bc he does not like the idea of mooching off ash forever, and he slowly makes a name for himself.
- ash and eiji live together but they are NOT together in a romantic sense... not yet >:)
- therefore eiji will probably date other people in the meantime, which gets a little troublesome bc it's not like he can bring them home to where his secret Very Important Friend is secretly hiding.
- ash will maybe have one-night stands every now and then. or not. idk. this isn’t a very important detail.
- anyway there will be lots of clueless but mutual pining :)
- ash especially, is of the opinion that they should start living separately bc someone will eventually track him down, maybe someone who has a past or present grudge on him. combined with his current activities, it’s only a matter of time before eiji would unwittingly get dragged into his problems again.
- eiji is v adamantly against that plan bc he's sorta developed a debilitating sense of paranoia that ash might just get killed somewhere while he’s not looking. not that ash isn’t paranoid either, but his insecurities often tip the scale over to “eiji is safer away from me” than “with me”.
- basically they’re doing their whole “stay. no, leave. no, stay” dance all over again, but like, dragged out over MANY YEARS.
- you thought eiji’s letter would’ve cleared up any crossed wires?
- HELL NO
- like yea, there was probably a beautiful honeymoon period of about a year or two after they reunited, before their respective trauma and issues started creeping in and fucking things up again.
- esp on ash’s end, i think he’d engage in a lot of self-sabotage. and eiji is only human, he has his own limits and baggage too.
Tumblr media
- there will be a government conspiracy plotline but on a smaller scale compared to canon that i am unfortunately not knowledgeable enough to worldbuild on, but it will probably have something to do with cybercrime/cyberterrorism/stuff like that bc it needs to tie in with ash's hacking shenanigans.
- i've heard that sing ends up becoming some sorta political big shot in yasha? idk, i haven't read it myself, but since china’s rising status was mentioned in GoL i imagine the plot should relate to that somehow.
- therefore sing would also get to be in this story!
- i guess this means yut-lung would come into the picture at some point as well, and it would be a good opportunity for a redemption arc but i haven’t given it much of a thought bc i’m indifferent to his character orz SORRY.
- look i can’t do plot, but i am basically envisioning a political thriller with a side of slow burn romance (wait, you mean like a rehash of canon?)
- i’m thinking max is the one who kicks off the story by bringing something fishy to ash, and they just end up uncovering more and more and MORE stuff as they keep going.
- so for like 80% of the story, ash and eiji will be separated bc ash will be busy spying or infiltrating something... and being at the center of Plot Things, while max and eiji will be more on the outside dealing with the journalist side of things. i’m fond of max-ash interactions but i’m also REALLY CURIOUS about max-eiji’s dynamic :D
- meanwhile sing will be like, half in and half out i imagine. he's versatile like that lol
- ...i did NOT mean that in a dirty way
- anyway, this will provide ash and eiji ample space to work out their issues separately, as i think living in close quarters for so many years has actually been aggravating them. ofc those issues don’t get 100% resolved by the end, but some time apart from each other to cool off and spend with other people should provide a bit of perspective.
- i want ash to make some NEW FRIENDS (!!!) that are on the same wavelength as him bc there’s only so much that he can tell eiji and i’m sure he gets rather lonely, so there will be OCs that he will meet in the middle of Plot Things.
- ash will get trapped at some point. preferably with sing so they can have a much needed heart-to-heart talk. they’ll have a lot to hash out, ranging from the events in BF, shorter’s and lao’s death, all the way to ash’s love life.
Tumblr media
- btw i like the idea of eiji and sing being close drinking buddies who confide in one another but ash is kinda, justalittle, not very happy about that LOL
- i mean, it's not like eiji can confide in ash when ash is the topic at hand, ya get me? as for sing, he’s similar to ash in the sense that they live dangerous lives, so i imagine he just finds it nice to be able to hang out with someone mundane like eiji every now and then.
- not to say that ash and sing aren’t talking to each other at all, but i think they’d have a bit of a rift between them. sing probably does feel some resentment, both at ash for killing lao AND at himself bc he knows deep down that given a choice, he would’ve saved ash over his own brother. ash can sense that tortured vibe, so eiji’s like their middle man. AND THAT’S WHY THEY NEED A HEART-TO-HEART TALK
- (SIDE NOTE: i want akira to have a role in this too. i actually have a separate headcanon that happens prior to this story... kinda like an alternate GoL?
akira goes to the states to visit eiji, but ash is also there, yeah? akira and ash start out sorta prickly with each other bc ash is all weird and standoffish and always cooped up in his room. she probably mistook him as a jobless model mooching off eiji at first since 1) eiji and ibe have never spoken about him back in japan (cuz he’s supposed to be dead), 2) why would eiji be living with some random hot guy? unless they met during one of his photography gigs? right???
and then she ends up witnessing them in the middle of a tiff, which makes her not like ash even more bc HOW DARE HE YELL AT POOR OKUMURA-SAN??? UNGRATEFUL JERK!!!
but over the course of her visit, she snoops around learns a bit about their history and gathers hints as to why their r’ship is kinda strained. also ash and akira somehow end up bonding (reluctantly) over their emotional insecurities and part on a friendly rivalry to win over eiji’s affections (which eiji is completely oblivious to. also akira may have been 100% serious but ash was just jokingly playing along with her (OR WAS HE???)). anyway long story short, ash teaches akira some cool tech/IT stuff along the way so that leads to her gaining an interest in the field.
she won’t be able to do much in this story, but a minor role would be cool :)
Tumblr media
^ a lighthearted gyoza-making scene amid all the angst)
- (SIDE NOTE #2: i ALSO want cain to feature in this, but bc canon provided very little bg info on him it’s hard for me to figure out where he’d fit. but i suppose that’s precisely why it would be great to include him, since i can just make up my own backstory! lol. for now, i think he should be connected to one of the new OCs to make him more central to the plot. or heck, he can be involved himself! ...yeah, i’m just salty about how cain was treated more like a convenient plot device compared to the other major side characters. we barely know anything about him even though he was one of ash’s most trusted allies. #caindeservedbetter2k20)
- anyway, back to the main story. ash (and his new "friends") barely escape where they’re held hostage. ash would be rusty with combat now as he’s spent the past few years doing only stealth work and being rather sedentary.
- so there’ll be lotsa old man!ash jokes like them poking fun at him whenever he complains about his back hehe
Tumblr media
- when they finally emerge outside they find themselves in the middle of nowhere! they then hijack a passing pickup truck and do a roadtrip back to civilisation. ROAD TRIP FTW
- at this point, quite some time has already passed and ash even has a fuzzy beard and mane and all. he’s standing at the back of the truck with a small smile on his face and the wind blowing in his hair, thinking GONNA GO BACK AND SEE EIJI, MISS HIM LOADS, HELL YEA
- (bonus: this song and this scene is the catalyst for this entire headcanon btw)
Tumblr media
(drew this about a year ago. i was trying to imitate the manga’s art style... and the ash i had in my mind was a little different. i’m too lazy to redraw, but he’s fuzzier now okay! MORE FUZZ! like an actual freakin LION!)
- meanwhile, eiji and max will get into some deep shit around this point?
- eiji in the pic above was me imagining that the Bad Guys had tossed some damning evidence (eg. severed body part?) on the ground like “ash’s dead/ash’s in a lot of danger now so hand over all the info u have”
- and eiji and max are like. SHOOKETH
- this would be the 3rd time ash has “died” after all, and as they say... 3rd time's the charm...
- eiji almost gives in, but then max spits in their face like fuck no and then... yeah. they get beat up and taken away or something lol
- EDIT: hmm... what if the Bad Guy is someone IN the government, and he uses his power to get eiji and max arrested for aiding and abetting a wanted fugitive (ash). and then ash has to rescue them... JAILBREAK STYLE
- also it might be cool to introduce ash's mom somewhere in this story... maybe SHE'S the villain! mwahaha *drama intensifies*
- anyways they will get saved by ash and gang bc that’s just the way things go, BUT! only on the condition they already made it out at least 80% of the way bc GODDAMN IT👏LET👏EIJI👏BE👏BADASS👏FOR👏ONCE👏
- (that is, after he overcomes the initial shock of ash possibly being dead again... again...... again............)
- there will ofc be moments of “oh my god, you’re okay” "i thought i lost you...!"
- something like this, because one can never have enough cheesy reunion scenes
- this will eventually lead to REVELATIONS (of the romantic kind, yes)
- buuuut they will never say "i love you" directly to each other bc ash is too emotionally constipated and eiji is too japanese. it's okay, they will communicate it through heated stares 👀
- i would love for there to be a scene where they have to be separated again for Plot Reasons and ash sorta hesitantly goes all "...will you wait for me?" as a direct parallel to canon!eiji's "i'll be waiting" and it’s like,
- FINALLY!
- FINALLY!!!!!!!!!! ash has finally allowed himself to ask for this, to let himself want it!
- and eiji would be like OF COURSE I WILL YOU BIG DUMMY, ALWAYS AND FOREVER
- but i think it'd be hilarious if eiji pops up while ash's in the middle of the final showdown and ash's like WTF I TOLD YOU TO WAIT FOR ME and eiji's like I WAS WORRIED OKAY YOU WERE TAKING SO LONG
- idk how this is supposed to end...
- oh wait! since the plot is government-related, maybe Someone will be able to pull strings to wipe out ash’s criminal record (past and present) and give him a brand new 100% legal identity, as thanks for his efforts? or maybe ash (or sing) just does it himself somewhere along the way LOL. anyway, he’ll be able to start over with a fresh clean slate and finally work on recovery FOR REAL NOW. yes this is a happy ending AND it didn’t require him to go to japan /flips off canon
- ...i realise it’s never going to be that simple but W H A T E V E R
- (also they probably will visit japan in the future with that shiny new passport... gotta meet the in-laws and all y’know)
- who do i gotta pay to write this cheesy self-indulgent fic for me

isekai recs?
this is the only ask that matters to me.. i won’t give content warnings but some of these stories contain sensitive themes. in very loose order:
Tumblr media
Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken / That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime (anime + manga)
one of the big boys last season. the MC guy dies + transported to another world but is reborn as a slime and, through this, basically becomes a god even though he mostly just wanted to build a safe city for monsters. the cast is mainly male but there are multiple major female characters.
i like plot stuff but it’s actually great fun watching rimuru develop his city and casually become super powerful. i’m still really interested in seeing where the plot goes and the less plot-centric stuff doesn’t detract from enjoyment of the story as a whole because it throws in character development too.
*The Ways of Strolling in the Demon Country is good and cute spinoff manga
Tumblr media
Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari / The Rising of the Shield Hero (anime + manga)
and here’s the other big boy of last season. the MC doesn’t die at the start (good for him), but he’s summoned to another world as one of the four legendary heroes. cool! until he’s immediately stabbed in the back by royalty and cast away. the mood of this show starts off and generally remains a lot darker than every major isekai but re:zero.
what sets this show apart besides the intriguing element of the MC’s legendary weapon being a shield, is (incoming low bar) the other 2 major characters, both ladies. raphtalia, the emotional soul of the show, wields a sword instead of being a typical female mage/archer. firo is the team’s tank and mount (in her real form, a large bird). the team goes through so much shit that when they defeat something, you feel satisfied instead of thinking ‘OP fantasy bullshit again’
Tumblr media
Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! / God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World! (anime + manga)
this one uses the classic “MC dies + is transported to another world” trope but it has a big focus on comedy. humour is its biggest selling point and it is a absolutely hilarious. i particularly love the voice acting. the art is nice though the animation is lacking (budget issues?).
you really grow to love the characters through their ridiculous shenanigans and as a plus, the main cast is mostly female (the MC guy, useless goddess, mage girl who can only cast explosion, and paladin knight lady who enjoys taking damage) and they’re hardly ever put through ecchi situations! yes the bar is that low! there’s minimal romance in the show atm thank god
Tumblr media
Tondemo Skill de Isekai Hourou Meshi / Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill (manga)
the OP skills this guy gets when he’s summoned to another world? infinite storage and online shopping. he cooks so well he garners the attention of legendary wolf beast fenrir, and they’re bound in a familiar contract because fenrir REALLY likes the food this guy makes. it’s great if you like cooking and fantasy - light-hearted, fun, and funny. i love the art style.
Tumblr media
Isekai Shokudou / Restaurant to Another World (anime + manga)
the kind of thing you consume for warm fuzzy feelings when you also like food. a restaurant in our world has a door that connects to a fantasy world, and once a week, people from the fantasy world can come visit and eat. so more like reverse isekai. each chapter revolves around a different fantasy person/people, and through this, you learn about each of those characters. slice of life vibes, light, fluffy. if you like yuru camp and food shows, you’d like this.
honourable mentions:
Tumblr media
Dungeon Meshi / Delicious in Dungeon (manga)
oh this is it. this is my most recent 10/10 rated animanga and holy fuck. it’s not an isekai, it is fantasy. one of the heroes is eaten by the dragon, the others have to retreat without their supplies, but they gotta go back for the person they lost. without rations, they end up eating the monsters in the dungeon. this sounds like a light-hearted premise (sort of), but you never forget the underlying goal of rescuing the girl, you see through flashbacks and interactions the importance of her to the others.
it gets pretty heavy and even dark later on without sacrificing its ability to be comedic. this one balances incredible art, an intriguing story, humour, emotional moments, delicious fantasy food, and characters who are evenly developed. the author is a woman and you can tell because there’s zero fanservice. it’s purely a fantastic story with beautiful art and hilarious expressions.
No Game No Life (anime + manga): game world isekai that revolves around playing games. the games are the most interesting element of this world and layers of mind games, cheating, etc. keep you guessing about the various outcomes. the colourful art style makes for a unique visual experience. more politics than even slime datta! you maybe assume the MC siblings are trying to conquer the world for the human race, but they’re actually just trying to become god. *has a prequel movie: NGNL Zero. incredible animation, it’s lore if you like the world
Re: Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu / Starting Life in Another World (anime + manga): wow the MC sure did think being in a fantasy world would be cool! labelled psychological horror and has a very dark tone throughout. most of the characters are female. the show is rife with suffering and while there is a story element to it, the first season of the anime ends with many questions and loose strings. great animation.
Kumo desu ga, Nani ka? / So I’m a Spider, So What? (manga): the MC girl is reborn as a little spider and she becomes more powerful. it’s hard not to root for her as you watch her grind through the cave. the interesting thing is that she actually becomes more like a villainous monster, partially because of how intruding humans repeatedly destroy her web home. also getting an anime soon!
Kujonin / Exterminator (manga): the MC uses his past life’s extermination skills to kill monsters and basically cheeses his way to OP ability. includes a tragic amount of one-sided love for the MC and fanservice. the characters he meets along his travels make for a more interesting story though; there are some solid moments.
whatever the opposite of recommendations/honourable mentions is:
sword art online.

How to give criticism and critique
Hey, guess who's back? Yup, it’s Regalia. I decided to make a post on how to give criticism and critique. I know people say that you don’t have to be a chef to know when a dish is too salty, which is true, however, it doesn’t change the fact that criticism and giving a critique are both learned skills. So while yes, anyone can tell you a dish is too salty (and it would technically count as criticism/critique) only someone who has learned how to give criticisms and critiques can tell you more than “it is too salty”.
However, being an artist and part of communities where critiques are a classroom subject, I wanted to write a guide and include some helpful tips and pointers on how to give critiques.
Tl;dr: Every bolded part.
It takes time and practice
Like I said earlier, it takes time and practice to give critiques. The only way to get better is to give them. No one is born being able to give good critiques and even I can have trouble forming good ones. It also takes time, there is nothing wrong with taking a moment to fully gather your thoughts, impressions, etc. rather than blurting out (or typing) the first thing that comes to mind. A good way to practice the fundamentals of a critique is to use the critique or criticism sandwich: Compliment, something you didn’t like, something that can be improved, first impressions and thoughts, and lastly another compliment.
The reason the “critique sandwich” is recommended so much is so you can learn the fundamentals of giving a critique. As with any skill, you shouldn’t ignore the fundamentals because they help you get better. The process of a critique sandwich also helps better organize your thoughts because it is easy to say something you don’t like something but forget to say what you do like. While you won’t always follow that formula exactly, knowing it will help you formulate critiques.
Learning to take critiques
As odd as it sounds, learning to take critiques can help you formulate better critiques. Going to be a little honest here, but I find many people who say “You don’t have to be a chef to know when a dish is salty” or “I’m brutally honest” in response to someone telling them their criticism or critique were ineffective, delivered poorly, etc. to be finding a way of deflecting the criticism they themselves received. Sometimes you have to be told that your criticisms are worded in a way that is ineffective or doesn’t serve any purpose beyond just letting you speak. It helps you get better at giving critiques.
Set the tone for your critique
In order to give a good critique, first, you must be able to set the tone of it. The tone you set will be how the criticism is received. If the initial tone is snide, mocking, etc. then people will view your critique in that way. If your intention is to only be snide, mocking, etc. towards someone then it’s fine to just call it what it is, you don’t have to call it critique or criticism.
It is important to be aware of the tone you set for your critiques. Starting the critique out with “This is absolute shit and I hate it.” will be the tone the rest of your critique takes and honestly? It may ruin many points that you make because you already have said that it is shit and you hate it. The point of a critique shouldn’t be to needlessly hurt someone’s feelings or to boost your own ego, first and foremost, it should be about helping the person receiving it. If you don’t care about helping that person, your critique will show that and may make the audience and person receiving it wonder why they should even bother listening when you don’t even want to help.
Personal story time! Don’t worry it’s short not too long.
In my art class, there was someone who actually gave “brutally honest” critiques. They would often say things that were needlessly hurtful either intentionally or unintentionally. During a class critique over portraits, I showed mine. I did the grid assignment of Heath Ledger’s Joker realistically and a self portrait of myself in my more natural style which is anime / manga based. Their thoughts on my assignment were this
“I find anime and manga to be a cop out and I think it is a disgusting and immature style of art for anyone in college. Even though you did your grid portrait realistically the fact that you did your own self portrait in that style has caused me to lose any and all respect for you as an artist.”
Compare that to my professors critique and thoughts on my work which were
“I think the anime like style is a cop out, however, seeing it next to your Heath Ledger I rather like it. It is expressive and shows the ability to illustrate something in a different way. Looking at your portrait, it looks whimsical and mysterious in a way. A tad dark too. I like that you put them side by side because it makes both of them stronger than if they were stand alone.”
My professor also used it as a moment to re-illiterate that we’re supposed to be a class and help each other and that the purpose of a critique isn’t to hurt or degrade anyone intentionally or unintentionally. The purpose is to better ourselves and each other.
Okay, storytime over. Now, you could see the difference between the critique I got from my classmate and the one from my professor. The tone my classmate set was negative and it showed in both what they said and how they said it. Truth be told, there was nothing they really liked about it and it felt like I was just standing there letting them talk down to me rather than getting feedback. Sure, it’s technically feedback but why should I take it when they’ve blatantly said they have no respect for me as an artist?
I still recognize that it was a critique and knew that they didn’t respect me as an artist, however, with them not having any respect for me, I also didn’t care what they thought of me or my works at that point. What may have been intended to encourage me to move away from drawing animanga style art did nothing of the sort because their tone blocked out the intention. It came off more like the intention was to just say something negative.
Compared to my professor’s critique even though he said that he personally thinks the animanga style is a cop out, he also said that he liked seeing it next to my Heath Ledger. The tone he set was positive and uplifting, even if he had something negative to say. His critique encouraged me to consider doing more portraits of celebs or incorporating more realism into my own personal style of art or to even do both side by side again.
The tone you set for your critique is arguably the most important tip because your critique follows your tone. If you set your tone to be mocking, the critique will follow that regardless of any good points you make. If you set your tone to be positive and uplifting, despite negative points you might make the critique still follows the tone you set. If your intention is to help, the tone you set should fall in line with it otherwise, your intention can be missed on the audience.
You vs I
One of the things I learned while doing and receiving critiques are the “You vs I” statements. Preferably, you want to limit the number of “You” statements as possible or balance them out with “I” statements. Take this for example
“You should have used blue because red is too distracting.” compared to, “I think you should have used blue because I think that red is too distracting.”
While both statements contain the same point of red being too distracting, the tone they have is different. The first one can read more like an objective fact and as if they actually did something objectively wrong rather than you personally finding the red distracting. One thing to remember about critiques is that they are subjective even though they can contain objective statements. Another thing is that a “You” statement can put blame on someone for a wrongdoing or perceived wrongdoing and it points the finger at the person receiving the critique either objectively or subjectively. An “I” statement, on the other hand, allows the person giving the critique to assume responsibility for their own feelings and perception rather than putting those feelings onto the person giving the critique.
You either want your critique to have limited “You” statements or find ways of balancing “You” statements with “I” statements and you don’t want to overuse either.
Your critique isn’t the end all be all, no one’s is.
One thing that inhibits people’s ability to give an effective critique is when they think that the critique they gave should be the end of it. Truth be told, no one’s critique is the “end” of it because varying opinions and critiques exist. No one’s critique has to be taken and you shouldn’t treat it as if it is a personal offense when yours isn’t.
Sometimes it happens. I’ve given critiques to people and they refused to take any advice I tried to give, it’s nothing personal. Maybe they enjoy doing it that way, maybe they don’t care to hear my opinion, maybe they don’t have the resources to take my critique at the moment but might in the future, etc. it can be any reason.
No one’s critique is absolute gospel so you shouldn’t treat yours like it is and likewise, while there is nothing wrong with taking the critique and advice you shouldn’t treat the words of the person giving it to you as gospel. There is nothing inherently wrong with disagreeing in part or in whole of someone’s critique. One person may think it is too sweet, another may think it needs more salt, and another can think that it needs more sugar.
If Thomas Keller and Gordon Ramsay were critiquing a dish, they likely won’t have the same exact opinion. They may agree in some parts and disagree with others. However, it’s unlikely that either will take it as a personal offense if one disagrees with the other. They’re more likely to agree to disagree or come to a more mutual understanding and shake hands and both come out with additional knowledge or something to consider.
Disagreement shouldn’t be a personal offense.
Don’t insult the person.
It shouldn’t have to be said, but surprisingly, it does. You should refrain from blatantly insulting the person you are giving the critique to and this somewhat overlaps with “You vs I” along with the tone for your critique. Of course, no one is infallible and an insult or perceived insult may get slipped in but it shouldn’t be intentional or compose the bulk of your critique. In the heat of the moment or debate, someone may get called a dumbass or idiot. We’re human, it happens sometimes.Gordon Ramsay has made a career off of insulting people and calling them donuts, however, it still remains that he ultimately wants to help the person and wants to offer guidance and assistance. The desire to insult someone shouldn’t come before or above the desire to help. He doesn’t go around insulting people just because he can and he’s also given praise to people for doing well or improving.
You should to the best of your ability keep a calm and level head. Yes, some people can say some things that make you want to slam your head into a desk and you may call them an idiot in response, however, the intention going into it shouldn’t be to just insult someone because why not. If you just want to insult someone, call it what it is... an insult / personal attack instead of a critique. If you must call someone a dumbass or an idiot, at least explain why or how you ended up at that conclusion or why you feel that way.
Explain yourself
One of the easiest ways to develop a well-rounded critique is to just explain yourself. If you think that something is bad, why do you think that? If you think something is sexist, why do you think that? If you like something, why do you like it? If you dislike it why do you dislike it?
Explaining yourself can go along way in helping the person receiving the critique to understand your thoughts and for you to understand your thoughts as well. It also allows for the person receiving the critique to explain why they agree, disagree, or what their thoughts are and open the doors to a discussion.
If you just leave it as “I don’t like this.” then it only leaves the person to either agree or disagree and it doesn't explain why you don’t like something or why you feel something can/should be improved upon. Same goes for if you do like it.
Explaining why you feel that way or why you feel something is wrong can help pave the way to understanding and coming to a mutual agreement. While you may end up having to agree to disagree, having an open path of discussion is important.
Sometimes your critique isn’t a critique.
The truth is that just not everything is a critique. Sometime’s its just venting or pointing out you don’t like something. Those things are fine, they just aren’t critiques. They’re just as they are, venting and pointing out things you don’t like. Not everything has to be a critique.
In that same vein, praising something isn’t a critique either. It’s just praise. There is nothing inherently wrong with any of these things, but it's important to realize they aren’t critiques. You don’t have to make something that wasn't intended to be a critique a critique.
Critiques are not inherently negative and should build
They aren’t. Many people think that a critique needs to be negative or can only contain negative things in order for it to be a critique, which simply isn’t true. Ignoring that positive critiques exist is a detriment to giving good critiques. There is a reason “constructive criticism” is a term because it is meant to build something up, not tear it down.
Yes, sometimes you have to tear something down to get to the core and foundation, the basics, however, it is done in order to build a better foundation-- not just to tear it down and leave the foundation as broken as it was.
If you don’t have anything truly negative or positive to say, that’s fine as well. However, a critique should something that builds something up or makes it better, not just tearing it down or tearing into it just for the sake of doing it. If a building has a bad foundation, you have to tear it down in order to fix the foundation and build something on top of a good one. However, what is the point of tearing it down if you aren’t going to bother fixing the foundation and just build something else bad on top of it?
Phew.... this was longer than I expected it to be, but these are all of the tips I could think of, compile, and explain how to create better critiques. Of course, these are more like guidelines than hard and fast rules, however, they’re meant to guide you to making good critiques.
I hope that this is helpful, even if you only take or use one part ‘cause boy my hands are tired.

Death Roast (Netflix Death Note liveblog)
OK, we're not even a minute and a half in and we've already got a problem. So Light is doing some math problems very fast to show off his smarts, that figures... but then he hands it off to some other guy and takes money in return??? I thought this was a story about a guy who thinks brutal and absolute enforcement of the law is the way to a perfect world, why the fuck would he help someone cheat? (ETA: he has FIFTEEN clients. FIFTEEN students he has been helping to get grades they don't deserve. What could he possibly be doing with that money that would let him spin this into a necessary evil?)
I am way too entertained by his high-pitched screaming and running away from Ryuk's first appearance. (I thought he wasn't supposed to show up until after the first name though?)
Ok, yeah, Ryuk is way too directing here. Though "Let's write Kenny's name down and see what happens" is a nice hint at the shinigami name-sight. (So is knowing Light's name right off the bat, come to think of it.)
Clearly we're skipping over any suspense of both "is this real?" and "should I do this?". Light Turner is already showing some violent tendencies by going for "decapitation" where Light Yagami rarely gets more detailed than "traffic accident." (Also, fail on the Note's part because that was clearly only a partial decapitation. The lower jaw was still attached to the body.)
Sadly, I no longer want the potato chips I had specifically reserved for this movie.
I wonder where they're going with these implications about a previous human owning the notebook. It's not necessary, plot-wise; manga Ryuk tells Light from the beginning that he's not on anyone's side and "when you die, I'll be the one writing your name down."
Wait, there has to be a human keeper? Why?! I feel like they're ruining Ryuk as the embodiment of Chaotic Neutral: he dropped the Note because he was bored and wanted to see what a human would do with it. (Though come to think of it the manga 'verse must have had some precedent for a Death Note ending up in the human world, since why else would all these rules about human ownership of the Note be known? This kind of supports the "Death Note users reincarnate as new shinigami" theory.)
WAIT WAIT I'VE GOT A THEORY: When a person is killed by the Death Note, the shinigami gains the rest of the lifespan they would have otherwise had, right? So what if in this canon, shinigami can't use the notebooks themselves? They have to get a human to write names for them. That's why movie-Ryuk is so pushy: if the Note doesn't get used he could run out of stolen life and die.
I saw the "I can't tell you... Okay, I'll tell you" exchange on my dash already, but I kinda assumed they were already dating at that point? HOLY SHIT HE BARELY KNOWS HER. I never thought I'd say this, but Light, you are not being nearly paranoid enough. (...No pun intended.)
He handed Mia the notebook before telling her to look at where Ryuk was; he assumed they were working by the animanga rules lmao Admittedly this will make keeping the secret easier. Which, as discussed, he needs the help. I'm guessing that Light is going to give Mia some ripped-out pages so that on the "retains the properties of the entire book" principle she'll become a secondary Kira Keeper.
HOW ARE THEY SUPPOSED TO "THANK YOU" IF YOU KEEP MAKING THE DEATHS LOOK LIKE ACCIDENTS? Bring back the default heart attack, dammit! Or if you want to be flashy, how about writing "struck by lightning," something easily fatal and popularly associated with divine punishment? On a related note, does this director have some sort of fetish for heads exploding?
Wow, Light is actually having scruples now? But credit where credit is due: the question of "How do we know if these anonymous Internet tips are trustworthy?" is actually a really good one that the manga was probably written too early to address properly. It's timely now, considering how common doxxing has become even over trivial matters, and how stolen images for example can result in the wrong person suffering the consequences.
Actually, I guess having "Kira" literally split between two people works, because you can't have too much internal monologue in a live-action movie. Inner conflicts become spoken, so that's why this adaptation has Light being the conscience and Mia being the Lady to his Macbeth.
Watari's real name is just "Watari"? Ok, nobody is paranoid enough in this movie.
[SERIOUS SPOILER ALERT! THERE'S LESS THAN HALF AN HOUR LEFT OF THE MOVIE AND THAT PROBABLY INCLUDES CREDITS. SERIOUSLY THINK HARD ABOUT READING FURTHER IF YOU PLAN TO WATCH AND HAVEN'T]
Damn, that was cold, writing Light's name in the book as insurance. However, she didn't actually write "...after he gives this notebook to Mia," which would have been smart because then he would have no choice. (Pretty sure that would be safe since it's just the first name. Anything less specific would invite loopholes.)
I can't be the only one who found the slow-mo-fall-with-Chicago-playing narmy as hell.
OMG, the way he got the Death Note back-- now that is the caliber of plan I'd expect from Kira.
Hmm, and they leave it ambiguous whether L kills him or not. The father being so calm about the reveal was weird though... (I guess he had a couple days to process the realization while Light was comatose, but still...?!)
Honestly, aside from Light's dad suddenly accepting that he's Kira at the end, the movie wasn't as bad as I expected. It doesn't stand up to the original in terms of psychology or philosophy, but taken as its own AU thing (like the pilot manga) it's a decent bit of entertainment.

I'm like 99% sure you mention somewhere that you thought the writers of Trouble in Tokyo could've done a lot more with it then they actually did (i think, i would look up the post but i'm using my data rn on mobile and i don't have time for that lmao) so my question is what would you have done to make trouble in tokyo better;)
MAN OH-HO MAN!
*stacks notes on desk*
1. Runtime
Trouble in Tokyo is a breezy hour and fifteen minutes.  For us to really explore every aspect and nuance of the potential story we had here, it needed to be a half-hour longer.  At least.  Heck, I would give it a full forty-five extra minutes so we could have a nice two-hour-long film.  The runtime is the root cause of pretty much all my other nitpicks with the movie.
DC Animation has this problem a lot, actually.  They refuse to let their films run any longer than that general hour and fifteen minute mark, and for stories where we really needed more time to let the characters and plot breathe and develop (Throne of Atlantis, Justice League vs. Teen Titans) it really shows.
C’mon DC.  You aren’t going to scare us off by adding twenty more minutes.
2. Daizo’s backstory
GIVE IT TO ME.
Hhhhgggnnnffffnnnn I am so disappointed in fandom for not writing craptons of fanfic speculating about Daizo WHY AREN’T ANY OF YOU AS FASCINATED WITH THIS VILLAIN AS ME?!
See, with a little extra runtime, we could devote a flashback or two to exploring Daizo’s story, how he got to where he was, his motivations, what compelled him not to turn Brushogun in and instead use him to playact a hero.  I mean it was pretty much always going to be obvious that he was the villain, anyone remotely genre-savvy enough could call it in a blink, but it never hurts to mislead us for a bit or make him sympathetic enough to the audience that we don’t want to believe he’s the villain.  Let us get to know him.  Like, pretty much all we know about him is that he seems to have an interest in manga/anime and he’s obsessed with being seen as a hero.  I wanna know why.
And it would be so easy to, from there, compare and contrast him against Robin or, hell, Beast Boy (as the animanga-obsessed geek who works as a hero) and thus give us some extra oomph and character motivation and depth.
Which leads into my next point…
3. Give the other Titans more shit to do
I love Robin.  I am an absolute whore for Robin.  But, as I said, as the very last thing we were going to get of animated Teen Titans, the movie should’ve spread the character focus around the team as a whole.
Like, Robin can still have the big dramatic arc–he can carry it fine after all–but also devote at least a mini-arc to the others, have them be more involved in the whole mystery plot, have them CONTRIBUTE.
Beast Boy could be the one to piece the clues together and figure out Brushogun is holed up at the publishing facility.  Raven could approach reporters or newspeople and ask them about Brushogun attacks (and maybe encounter the producers of the gum commercial and have hilarious misunderstandings that lead to her winding up as said gum’s mascot).  Cyborg and Starfire could notice the hero-worship Tokyo’s populace seems to have for Daizo.
There was a minor under-running theme of, “What is it to be a hero?” and only Robin really had to confront that question.  Let all the Titans do it.
Fandom would eat it up.
4. Go deeper into the narrative parallels
I made the observation that Robin’s obsession to catch Brushogun had a lot of the same triggers and followed a lot of the same beats as Robin’s obsession with Slade.
Yeah, make those explicit.
If we’re making Robin’s insecurities as a hero a narrative focus, go all out I say.  Have him flashback during his fight with Saico-Tek 2.0 to earlier moments in the movie where he doubted himself, or berated himself.  Let him be angry about screwing up with Starfire and show him taking out that frustration (and all his others) on the guy.
Have the Titans notice Robin’s taking things a little hard and express a bit of worry for him before he gets arrested.  Let Starfire’s dragging Robin around the city be subtly implied as a deliberate distractionary tactic, to take his mind off his perceived failures and uselessness.
And not just him, let’s give all the Titans a little introspective character moment.  Have Beast Boy make an offhand comment about being used to being tricked and tossed aside by someone he liked.  Let Cyborg be slightly terrified of Brushogun’s fate (being trapped inside old technology until he withers away) and confess said fears to one or two of the others (my vote is on Raven or Beast Boy).
Let Daizo (pre-reveal) make more biting remarks about the Titans being children.
Just little things like that.  They don’t have to last very long or be very deep.  Once again, fandom would eat it up.
5. Fix Raven’s attitude
Raven was needlessly cranky the whole film, and I hate it when the TT writers reduce her to the resident anti-social grouch who barely even acts like she cares about her friends.  Heaven forbid she show some character growth and stop being such a sourpuss at everything and everyone.
Soften up her snark, writers.  It ain’t gonna ruin her.
Aaaaaaaand, that’s about it.  Just go longer and deeper into things basically.
I still like the movie (and I’m still dying for a really good multi-chapter Daizo backstory fic), but that’s how I’d fix all the lingering nitpicks I have that work against the movie’s potential.
Also if anyone has any Trouble in Tokyo fanfic to rec me, slide it on into my inbox I MEAN IT I NEED ALL THE FIC.
