i had a dream where i said "i know how i started and i know i'll end the same way. but what comes in the middle? im living the middle right now, yet it feels so far away. it doesn't even feel like im truly living. im just sitting here doing nothing, like a dead person. and it's me who keeps killing myself everyday, ignoring all of my goals and my friends." so uh. im going to do something today i think.

i’ve been aching to commentate spirit phone’s commentary for ages. glad i finally got around to it, this was an ejoyable experience. liveblog below the cut
-i'm like half certain i've heard this commentary before. maybe not the whole way through & it was probably actual years ago
-nice hearing stuff like this. in-depth personal view of the album-making process. makes it seem like more of a real thing i could do myself someday
-neil cicierega real person momence
-i could probably go real in depth about neil cicierega/tally hall parallels specifically concerning like. the arc of their musical careers. but i won't, here
-wild how i legitimately don't care much about micheal jackson
-didnt we get a bunch of spirit phone stems from the needlejuice release/his patreon? we could probably hear the funny track he speaks of here in that
-i love hearing musical artists, especially neil cicierega, talking about the meanings of their songs. like, not only has this song been claimed to hell & back by the tumblr gays, but with later ones i just can't see where he gets these ideas from. also, claiming there's any one meaning or plot to a song just seems silly to me
-shoutout to neil reusing a midi from like, 1998, that he made at 12 years old, whose entire melody was reused for the main verses of everybody loves raymond. loved finding that out on my own 2 years ago. now it's common trivia in this fandom. not bad times
-it'd be neat if neil did individual trans tracks here like he did with view monstel, those things are half of why i consider it my favorite album
-it's a lot easier to ignore the creator's intended meaning behind a song when he can't even remember it. thanks neil
-seesaw effect
-and there's my joke all but 1 of my followers wont get. moving on
-what kinds of movie theater lobbies has neil been to where there are arcade machines. i mean im not one to talk but that does sound rather strange
-why do songs' titles even need to be taken from the lyrics. ive never seen that as any sort of requisite. it's like titling any form of prose you can just give it whatever name ya like
-"this part sounds pretty cool right"
-is neil's vocal range only mildly better than mine? with training i could change that
-oh i haven't processed any of the last 25 seconds hold on
-god. a shit ton of vocal modification in this song. it's like neil returned to his roots but with quality this time
-i, as an ace/aro, have never related more to an allohet guy in my life. what is the point of eyes!
-professional humming/whistling takes skill. it's different from the recreational or casual stuff. i'd know
-there's a name for the way sound (especially music) gets distorted when moving past you and i can't remember it but it's probably what neil's referring to here in the way he recorded the intro
(- update: it's the doppler effect no need to tell me cas already did)
-as someone who hasnt seen the rugrats or take me there by blackstreet i'll just say it sounded like a bouncy music box melody. nice to hear a song that messes with the typical scales though. lydian & diatonic.
-that's a rather specific thing to be glad about, but given what he talked about in his last full audio commentary about the jew harp i suppose i'm not surprised
-i know that tmbg song now. listened to it & saw the music video too. yep they're different alright
-where the hell does neil get all these instrumence from anyway
-huh. hadnt heard this part of the commentary before making my oc concerning this song but i like to hear neil's approval concerning part of my interpretation
-i love how ive heard a billion different tellings of this mellified man story from lem dem fans talking about this song and neil's is by far the wildest
-good god that does only make it worse neil
-i love making liveblogs of lemon demon albums. with the fullerenes or tally hall i cant name a specific dude to take out my woes on generally but with lemon demon i can just say neil all the time. i like being on a casual first name basis with this dude ive never interacted with once ever
-is sweet bod the one other than cabinet man with a demo in the bonus tracks? i forget
-holy shit the boston molasses disaster someone call up soapy if it doesnt already know, it'd love this
-two thousand nine. god i miss the fiddle solo. the ver with it is truly the best one
-he pronounces it jeff? i've always read it as gef with a hard g. that's what i get for knowing words that are never spoken aloud
-that's a fun meta interpretation of this ghost story that's over a century old. i like that
-i've noticed neil generally does the same synths across a whole album. it's especially more clear in the earlier ones, and does mean i occasionally mix up songs between clown circus & live from the haunted candle shop
-ah! ancient aliens! my least favorite track on this album. i cant even claim to have the least interest in a popular one i've just generally not liked this one much from the beginning. so im curious to see what neil's got to say, i think ive been in ~new commentary zone for a while now
-anyway. newest update on the loolin not realizing a song's funky time signature front: i think this one's in 6/4. or at least switches a lot between time signatures. granted i dont listen to it very often for the reasons stated above
-see the way neil describes it. eldritch horror upon being visited by the unknown at a time when humanity'd hadn't even yet had a chance to imagine such a thing occurring. should be right up my alley. but the sound itself & many of the lyrics simply turn me away.
-must i specify i don't dislike it? spirit phone is neil's best album it not being my favorite doesn't mean i think it's bad yadda yadda nobody should be surprised by this it's not like anyone in these fandoms reads my liveblogs <3
-granted i think this is. the first bit of spirit phone content i've made on my blog ever. so who knows things can change <3
-the transitions in spirit phone are much less view-monster transition tracks & more extended outros. view-monster's were a bit more intro than outro sure but they also seemed directed upon making a 2-way rather than 1-way bridge between tracks. or something like that
-.............soft fuzzy man is an incredible nickname for a cat. i'd steal that if i werent afraid of introducing my relatives to lemon demon
-jirls
-an underlying metaphor is good enough. the literal side of the lyrics are fun. nothing but agreement here neil my good man
-the transition into as your father i expressly forbid it from soft fuzzy man is the best one in this album
-buddy you ask if a musical idea has been used before odds are the answer is yes in this day & age the question is has it been used in the way you're using it. like sure this soul jazz record from the 60s that was sold out in kansas stores for a week used this bassline that youve found yourself copying. but seeing as youre using it in some angsty garage rock ballad type tune does anybody actually care
-doesn't everybody like to say things in an unhinged manner from time to time
-imagine having a guitar dad, i say, with my dad being a folk accordion/fiddle dad, which is infinitely worse in every way
-i think he was in an actual folk band at some point. idk the 90s were weird
-iron my life?
-m-more intimate? there are a lot of ways i'd describe this song but intimate isn't one of them. granted as your father is negatively intimate so from there i guess you've got nowhere to go but up
-...still glad to see his interpretation kinda supports my oc at least
-the way he says characters in songs shouldn't worry about death really strongly makes me think this is some sort of. thematic continuation of stuck from dinosaurchestra, even if there's no real death in there. interesting. would also mean that the dad from these past 2 songs is named carlos betty (no last name)
-i literally never assumed this was a flute solo. piccolo at best. it's pretty clearly a recorder
-my mom plays the recorder. i wonder if she can play recorder better than neil cicierega
-we can throw a party in honor of the crushing weight of responsibility! i simply won't be the one throwing it because i have enough on my plate already <3
-what the hell does "a sense of intent" mean
-i've never heard rush before however i disagree with neil's understanding of 6/4. 6/4 is meant to have emphasis (onbeat or another term i can't remember) on the 1st & 4th beat of every measure, which is greatly different from a measure of 4/4 then a measure of 2/4. it's why his 5/4 always sounds weird, because while it's recognizable in sequences of 10/4, it's more 2 measures of 4/4 with one of 2/4 tacked on the end. that's also how it's different from 3/4. i don't know much music theory but what i do understand i will fight to the death about
-"canonized" that's. a very interesting term to use when referring to a former president
-from now on i will interpret every love song directed at some unseen "you" to be inviting me to marry them for tax purposes. thanks neil for being an aromantic icon
-ah hell yes hell yes man-made object is my favorite goddam song on this album
-short & sweet & good damn vibes. neil's thoughts on it all are only making it better
-wild how he uses very few vocal effects for a song that he clearly is straining his vocal range for. go off neil
-the qualifier of man-made is a wonderful thing. oldest or biggest thing? oldest or biggest man-made thing? what a incredibly important specification. a world of possibilities lie between the two. oh i love it
-just gets me thinking yknow! what we consider weird/impressive in another species, in our own species- what kind of equivalent to that would there be from an outsider looking in? are there alien versions of the significances we place upon things, that we could never imagine? the limits of the human imagination mean we could never conceive of something else in the world that isn't, in some way great or small, just like us- and are we wrong for thinking that? such a juicy topic i wish there were a name for it because it's kinda hard to explain concisely
-spiral of ants. my second favorite song from this album, in fact. a good one to experience
-the vocals are just another instrument. they really truly are. i wasn't going into this commentary expecting to feel solidarity for neil cicierega in this chili's tonight on more than one occasion but here i am.
-like, his whole stance on interpreting songs is something i agree with almost entirely. you can take it at face value, you can dig to their very depths, you can listen to songs without caring what the lyrics mean whatsoever, and those are all fun. & yeah while any of these people can be annoying as one of the types who enjoys gliding on the surface more than anything i find those who dedicate themselves to figuring out the whole meaning of a song over anything else to be both slightly scary & slightly annoying <3 keep up the good work
-i want to make songs for my siblings the way neil makes songs for his sibling(s)
-spinch
-neil really shouldn't be allowed to be this funny like this whole album youre thinking golly! he's just a normal man this neil cicierega! and then he starts listing the cat hacks jokes & you remember he's had ridiculously consistent viral success with all his humorous endeavors and holy shit it's neil cicierega in action talking about his music. god bless you neil
-you're welcome, no problem, my pleasure. good eveternoon, radio audience!

RWBY Musings #64: A Squiggles Meister’s Views on the potential parallels between the RWBY V3 and V6 finales.
I’ve been saying this for a while now but I believe the CRWBY Writers might be gearing us fans up to have the V6 finale pay homage to the epic V3 finale or at least that’s my theory. So if I had to guess the parallels to V3 that might pop up during the V6 finale, here’s what I think they’ll be:
Grimm Rampage through Vale ------ Grimm Rampage through Argus
During V3, the City of Vale got rampaged by hordes of Grimm including one colossal Grimm Dragon. I have been wondering what the point of the Wall of Argus was alluding to. I still stand by my previous hunch that something is going to come from beyond the wall to rampage the city. Either that’s the case or the one in my next parallel.
Grimm Dragon from Mountain Glenn ----- Grimm Hecatonchire from the Wall of Argus
A bit of a stretch but what if… there’s secretly a Grimm Titan like a Hecatonchire Grimm that’s secretly hidden inside the Wall of Argus. Since Cordo preached about her Atlesian ancestors helping to form Argus, imagine if those same ancestors put Grimm inside the Wall of Argus or built the city around one that’s been dormant for centuries just like the Grimm Dragon.
In the series, Attack on Titan, it was revealed in a later season that there were Titans in the actual walls that were supposed to keep humanity safe from the Titans. Imagine how cool it would be if a Grimm Hecatonchire suddenly immerged from the Wall of Argus in the same fashion as the Grimm Dragon in V3 and similar to its Dragon counterpart, it also brings forth legions of Grimm to prey on the innocent civilians of Argus, forcing the Argus Military to cease their pursuit of our heroes and take immediate charge to protect the citizens of Argus.
Huntsman vs Atlesian Paladins-----Huntsmen vs Atlesian Megazord
In V3, we got all the main huntsmen from different academies working together to defend Beacon against the swarm of corrupted Atlesian Paladins. Now in V6, it seems C10 set up out heroes who, may not be from different academies but represent the diversity of the kingdoms in a sense (minus Vacuo) going toe to toe against Cordo and her Atlesian Megazord.
Weiss Summons Armor Gigas against the Paladins---Weiss summon Armor Gigas against Cordo
In V3, we got Weiss summoning part of her Armour Gigas for the first time. Right now, Weiss’s trademark summon is the only thing that can grow to a size big enough to give Cordo’s giant megazord a run for its money provided she has the aura levels to do so. I’m sure if Jaune were to amplify Weiss’ aura, the same way he did with her last season and at the start of V6 with Ren, we could get our first ever giant robot vs giant armoured summon fight in the history of RWBY.
Velvet Weapon Reveal ----- Oscar Weapon Reveal
Need I say more? V3 was the first time we saw Velvet’s weapon and her semblance I think too in action. Who knows? If we play our cards right we might finally see what the Oz-cane can do at its true power because as a Pinehead, I have definitely been wondering what tricks to the Oz-cane Oz was talking about back in V5.
Cinder killed Ozpin ---- Neo kills Oscar
Now before my fellow Pineheads come at me with them pitchforks for daring to even theorize this, let me explain my hunch. What if…on the same level as Adam’s reappearance, Cinder Fall also shows her face in Argus and she targets Ruby as expected. So Cinder overpowers Ruby with Neo’s help and just as Neo is about the deal the final blow to Ruby, Oscar jumps in and takes it for her, right through the heart.
I have been hearing this whole thing about Neo doing something to make the fandom hate her going around for a while and I’ve even had one or two fellow FNDM come to me with the theory of Neo harming Oscar. Well here’s my rendition of that theory. What if…Neo goes in for the kill on Ruby but Oscar daringly jumps infront of Ruby to shield her and takes it. So Oscar is there on the ground on the cusp of death. Maybe to make the situation even more dramatic, he straight up does die in Ruby’s arms, shocking her and the fandom.
Then after Oscar technically dies, instead of going to the afterlife as one would expect or reincarnating, Oscar shockingly winds up in the Realm between Realms where he meets the God of Darkness, similar to how God of Light met with Ozma. To Oscar’s surprise, a reluctant Ozpin is also present. The God of Darkness then offers the two souls something neither could refuse. He offers them the chance to undo what his brother did centuries ago. As it turns out, the whole reincarnation thing was all Light’s idea because he still believed in humanity and that they could change.
Tumblr media
His brother felt the opposite but he did want to entertain himself a bit with his brother’s immortal pet. So he offers both Ozpin and Oscar the chance to undo his brother’s curse so that they may return to their normal lives free of having to be revived to continue his brother’s dirty work.
But he only offers the deed to one. In order to decide who gets to return to the land of the living, God of Darkness forces Oscar and Ozpin to fight each other one and one to see which soul gets revived only. And to Oscar’s surprise, Ozpin actually wants to fight him so that he can finally be free. So the two souls fight. Of course, Oscar wins and gets to go back but this time he’ll be revived by himself as himself. No longer will he have Ozpin’s voice inside of his head. He’ll be his own person again. He’ll be…alone; a comment made by a grief stricken Ozpin.
It’d be interesting if we could get an equivalent of Oscar calling out Ozpin in the same manner Ruby did to Qrow in V6 C10. Oscar scolds Ozpin for his words implying that he’s never been alone. He’s always had his people. His friends and so does Oscar and so long as they accept him and wish to keep fighting, so will he until his dying breath. His last dying breath in his now only life.
The God of Light’s curse was bestowed so that Ozma was never alone during his cycle but Oscar would be revived as himself without Ozpin. He will be the last incarnate. The last life. The last Wizard of Light. So as Ozpin goes to the afterlife, Oscar returns to the real world where he returns as himself to continue the good fight.
This parallel will probably not happen at all. Definitely not. But as always, I wanted to toss it out there just to entertain myself at the possibility, y’know what I mean?
Team JNPR dies with Pyrhha ---- Team JNPR is reborn with Oscar
Ya’ll know I’ve been saying this since the beginning, right? Ya’ll know how much I want that Team JNPR Revival with Oscar replacing Pyrhha right? I feel like these past two episodes are slowly gearing up to have this happen. Though I didn’t particularly enjoy C9, it did give me my biggest indicators of Jaune asking Oscar to join JNR.
That Pyrhha closure for JNR. Jaune mentioning in his own words how valuable Oscar is to the team. Bruh, at this point, I’m just waiting for this to come. I’m waiting on this conversation.
Cinder killed Pyrhha----Jaune kills Cinder
This one I’m a little iffy about. I know I’ve been waiting for Jaune to have Justice for Pyrhha moment with Cinder but after C9 I don’t think Jaune will be as angry to kill Cinder anymore. I mean, if Cinder turns into a Grimm monster or gets eaten by a Grimm only to fuse with said Grimm making her less human. Then I can see Jaune being the one to deal the final blow on Grimm Cinder. I’ve said this before too. If anyone deserves to kill Cinder, it’s Jaune.
I doubt the Writers will make him kill her as human but…if she turns into a Grimm then it’s a bigger possibility but that’s just me.
Adam vs Blake and Yang ----- Adam vs Blake and Yang The Remix
Duh. Just duh. This doesn’t even need to be on the list because it’s something the season has been alluding to all volume. Plus C10 already showed it happening. The only twist I can think of from this fight is if Adam dying at the end. I know some people like Adam as a character (like EruptionFang) but I really feel the Writers might be setting up for V6 to be Adam’s curtain call.
I can’t see Adam moving forward, not after the focus he’s been given this season. It’ll be interesting if Adam ends up dying in a similar fashion to Gaston from the Beauty and the Beast. Like he tries to stab Blake but ends up missing and falling to his death. Or maybe he ends up caught on the ledge and Blake tries to help him. Like I’m picturing Adam on the ledge with Blake offering him her hand only for Adam to refuse and fall to his death or something. That’s my hunch.
Then after the Adam fight is one and he’s no longer a thorn in their lives, the Bumblebee could finally have their closure with that. Who knows? Maybe they might make Bumblebee have a moment in the V6 finale. Instead of Blake crying over Yang getting hurt, it’s the two smiling at each other after being found safe together. Maybe they might even kiss, who knows? I’m not a Bumblebee shipper but if a kiss somehow happens between these two gals, I won’t be shocked. I can expect Yang to kiss Blake revealing she’s in love with her.
Again, I ship BlackSun but Bumblebee peaks my curiosity particularly with how Yang sees Blake. I’ve always viewed the Bees as being a ship driven by Yang mostly. Ironic since Yang’s motorcycle is also named Bumblebee. Any Bumblebee hints or vibes I’ve gotten throughout the seasons came mostly from Yang. I think Yang might care for Blake in the romantic sense. Blake I’m not sure about.
I don’t know if Bumblebee is in the cards. All I know is that I think the series has kind of dropped one or two hints about Yang’s true feelings that I’m waiting to see addressed in some shape or form in this remix rematch battle. If all the Bees do is hug then cool. But if they kiss, I’m just saying I won’t be shocked. But that’s just me.
Arkos First Kiss ---- Renora First Kiss
Nothing serious, I just want to see these two kids kiss finally. And what would be great is if Nora and Ren kiss after the group save Argus. The Arkos first kiss was bittersweet because it was Pyrhha’s last chance to let the boy she loves know how she felt about him before she sacrificed herself. A Renora after battle kiss would mean hope and happiness. For Pete’s sake, it’s been six seasons, let these two kiss already you cowards!
Alrighty then, I think that’s all the parallels I have in mind. If I think of anymore I’ll add them to the list later. For now, enjoy guys!

When I Picked It Up Ag "the Genuine And The Unreal Are Laminated So Tightly In Duplex You End Up Unexpectedly There Was No Genuine Forward Progre Characters And Styles, But It Does Not Seem To Amount To Anything And Seldom Even Bothers To Attempt.

Star Wars The Last Jedi and Disney’s Hercules: a Comparison in Tropes in a Hero’s Journey
I'm a bit of a Disney fan, so I'm sorry if this is redundant, but I wanted to make a brief post about my fave Disney film and how it parallels with The Last Jedi. I also see that there are a lot of mythical parallels we discuss here in the Reylo community, so I thought this was somewhat pertinent, especially when looking at Disney and how it uses these tropes and storytelling arcs. Apologies as I wrote this very quickly and there are grammar errors!
So, let me start.
So first, Hercules, our mythical hero, starts as a baby foretold.
Tumblr media
Hades, who is God of the underworld and is a type of evil “devil” archetype in this movie (like Snoke the “snake”), has the fates see into the future to tell if he can overturn his brother, the noble (haha) Zeus, only to find out his new nephew, the newborn child of Hera and Zeus, will crush his ambitions if he fights.
Tumblr media
So, he has the baby kidnapped and his servants try and turn the baby mortal, but he escapes death and is raised by mortals, not knowing his origin. Yet, miraculously, he retains the strength (power) of a God. He never fits in because of his inhuman strength.
If you compare this with Rey, abandoned on Jakku, and a child with god-like (force) power, we see some similarities...Perhaps, too, she is a child of prophecy. This “chosen one” was mentioned by Mark Hamill and I will discuss that further below.
Hercules is lost, he doesn't fit in in normal society and goes searching to find where he belongs: Like how Rey is waiting for her family, Hercules goes searching for his.
Tumblr media
His song here is “I can go the Distance” and it's about finding where he belongs as he goes searching for his parents when his adopted parents give him a medallion showing he came from the Gods.
“I can go the distance” Lyrics:
“I have often dreamed Of a far-off place Where a great warm welcome Will be waiting for me” source: http://www.lyricsondemand.com/soundtracks/h/herculesmusicallyrics/gothedistancelyrics.html
I feel like, if Star Wars did songs, Rey would sing a similar song while eating and cooking her food on Jakku...
Because Hercules and Rey are looking for belonging. Preferably with their family who they don't remember but who left them. Hercules finds his father and even asks Zeus when he sees him whether he loved him, and why he left him (in this case it was kidnapping).
Eventually, learning from his dad that he has to prove his heroism, he goes to a disgruntled trainer of heroes who are living in obscurity and seclusion and is fed up with training because all his past trainees have let him down (all the heroes who died: Achilles, etc.
Tumblr media
Sound familiar?
Remember how Luke is disgruntled, Mark Hamill says he thought Ben might have been the prophesied  “chosen one” but now wants nothing to do with training new heroes, it seems. He is pissed. Old man shouting at kids to “get off his lawn” is evoked in my mind.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Hercules, Hercules eventually convinces Philoctetes to train him.
Tumblr media
Time goes on .....and BONUS! Then he meets the sexy, and captivating (and dark) vixen Megara!
Tumblr media
who, unbeknownst to our hero, works for the bad guy (Hades) because she sold her soul to him to protect a loved one, Vader/Papatine-style (who then betrayed her leaving her cold and shunning love). But could this woman, the villain’s servant, bound in tragedy to serve the evil Hades ever fall in love with our Brave Hero? What are the odds this sexy plot twist could come into action??!?!
Tumblr media
The odds are very good. Here’s her song “wont say Im in Love” This says it all.
youtube
Suffice it to say, she exudes the same dry humor as our “vixen” Kylo Ren. We should recall his “I hear we have the best pilot in the resistance”, and he is even snarkier in the book...
Tumblr media
She is my fave Disney heroine, mainly because of her dry humour and her darker, more complex past. She is not JUST a damsel in distress, she is a fighter, has spunk, and is not just a sweet fluffy marshmallow, She is tough.
Well, Hercules falls in love with her. And when push comes to shove, he gives Hades his power to save her (unknown to him, she was working for Hades, though she didn't want to hurt Hercules). Hercules knows he is betrayed. When Hercules cant fight, Hades starts conquering the Gods. He is winning, and Hercules could do nothing. Megara, as Hades is about to kill Hercules, gives her life to save him, thereby doing her heroic sacrifice (fulfilling the trope, turning her officially into a good guy and earning the trust of Hercules and his friends. I believe Kylo will sacrifice himself for Rey to fulfill this redemption trope necessity, and he will survive).
Tumblr media
So Hercules goes to the underworld and saves Megara, sacrificing himself, almost dying and becoming an actual immortal God through this (his Godhood was earned when he sacrificed himself for love). He then defeats Hades, fulfilling the prophecy.
Tumblr media
BUT, in the end, he decided not to remain a God with his parents on Mount Olympus where they live, because he has found “where he belongs” with his love. Not with his family (once again, in a Reylo reading, this is not unlike Maz telling Rey to look forward to finding belonging, not backward). This is also a full “becoming of age” conclusion, where a person leaves family and goes out to start a family of their own, with a true partner.
Tumblr media
I won't say this has anything to foretell about Reylo and the end of IX, but I think there are quite a few similarities between Episode VIII and this Disney movie. Yes, Star Wars is darker, but it is generally uplifting. I think Kylo is a male, darker version of the sexy, misguided vixen (his anima) that is so tempting and desirable to the straightlaced hero(or heroine). She was someone his friends disapproved of, but her love for him, and his love for her, saved the day and helped him fulfill the prophecy and he found where he belonged was not with his family but with her. And you can take from that what you want :)

Mary Oliver and her dog, Perry. Photograph by Rachel Brown.
Editors’ note: This story was originally published in the now-departed SEARCH magazine, in 2008, edited by KtB co-founder Peter Manseau. We thank them for permission to republish.
Each spring I teach a course at Boston University called “Death and Immortality.”  My students and I discuss the quest for an elixir of immortality in the Mesopotamian epic of Gilgamesh, and the execution of Socrates in Plato’s Phaedo. I tell them Christian stories about the crucifixion of Jesus and Buddhist stories about the death of the Buddha.  Along the way, my students reckon with their own mortality, even as I reckon with mine.
In a final lecture on deathbed proclamations, I talk about the last words attributed to Plato, Jesus, and the Buddha. I also include some more secular examples, such as Conrad Hilton’s “Leave the shower curtain on the inside of the tub.”  But I give this lecture’s last words over to the poet Mary Oliver. Oliver, who has just released a new book, The Truro Bear and Other Adventures, is neither a scientist nor a preacher.  But like Henry David Thoreau of Transcendentalist fame she is a naturalist whose attention to what used to be called the Book of Nature borders on both devotion and experimentation.  Her poems work in my course because they are somehow animated by death, and they work on me because they speak about the mysteries of mortality in a language that feels like home.  Perhaps that is because, like Oliver, I live on Cape Cod, so I am familiar with the fiddler crabs, great horned owls, humpback whales, irises, goldenrod, and honeysuckle that populate her poems. I suspect, however, that her poetry vibrates at frequencies close to my own because I share with her something of a Buddhist sensibility, particularly when it comes to an awareness of the transiency of things.
I read different Mary Oliver poems to my students each spring, but I always conclude with “In Blackwater Woods.” This poem begins with one of Oliver’s favorite commandments: “Look.”  Next the poet calls our attention to trees and autumn leaves and “the long tapers/ of cattails” and “the blue shoulders/ of the ponds.”  Then, as is her wont, she redirects our attention to something broader and more human:  in this case, “the black river of loss.”  The poem ends with these words:
To live in this world
you must be able
to do three things:
to love what is mortal;
to hold it
against your bones knowing
your own life depends on it; and, when the time comes to let it go, to let it go.
When I started working on this article, I was hoping to talk with Oliver. It’s the 25th anniversary of her Pulitzer Prize-winning collection American Primitive, so I wanted to meet her at sunrise, to trudge with her across the Provincetown dunes, to pay attention to her paying attention to nature.  I wanted to ask her what she knows about Buddhism, and what she thinks of it, whether her poetic practice of attention—of looking and listening—is a kind of mindfulness, whether her attention to nature is informed by No-Self, and whether her ability to reckon with loss is rooted in an understanding of Impermanence,
I wanted to talk with her about the parallels between her sort of looking and the looking my biologist friends do through their microscopes.  I wanted to understand what she meant when she referred to herself as “spiritually curious,” and to the poem as a “confession of faith.”
Unfortunately, Oliver, who once called privacy “a natural and sensible attribute of paradise,” turns out to be rather reclusive, so I never got to ask her these questions.  Apparently she prefers making poems to giving interviews, watching the tides to revealing the ebbs and flows of her own autobiography. “You don’t want to hear the story/ of my life, and anyway/ I don’t want to tell it, I want to listen,” she wrote in 1986.  Three years later she told an interviewer that poets should vanish into their writing rather than hover in front of it. “I believe it is invasive of the work when you know too much about the writer, and almost anything is too much,” she said.
After Oliver faxed back my request for an interview with a terse (but not unfriendly) “no,” I briefly considered trying to observe her in her native habitat, traveling to Provincetown to observe her on her morning rounds, not unlike she might observe a great blue heron or some other force of nature.  But this strategy sounded too much like stalking to me, perhaps because it was.
I tried to track her down at a poetry reading last summer in Provincetown.  We exchanged hellos as she walked in the door, and a goodbye as she left.  But she came and went more like a hungry hawk than an established poet, and did not take any questions.
So I decided instead to visit some of the sites in and around Provincetown where Oliver sites her poetry.  I decided as well to try to be in the world for a while after the manner of a Mary Oliver poem—to wake early, to look and to listen, to attend to nature, to slow down, to be grateful, to live simply, to love recklessly, to sit with my losses, to take what is given rather than what is desired, to attend to the presence of death in the midst of life, to venture out into storms rather than taking refuge from them.
On a CD I recently received as a gift, “At Blackwater Pond:  Mary Oliver Reads Mary Oliver,” is a jewel of a poem called “The Buddha’s Last Instruction.”  Here are many of the themes of Oliver’s work:  a preoccupation with spirituality, a fascination with death, and a strategy of abiding in the mysteries of both by attending with amazement to the glories of the natural world.  The poem begins:
“Make of yourself a light”
said the Buddha,
before he died.
It then jumps to the poet herself, mulling over this last sermon in the presence of the rising sun.  The poem then migrates across millennia and continents again—back to Kushinara, the place of the Buddha’s death. There she shows us an old man lying down between two trees, with worlds of possible words before him as he ponders his last words. Then back to the poet and the sun. Then to the old man again, recounting the twists and turns of “his difficult life.” Then back to the poet and the sun and feelings of human inadequacy and human brilliance. And finally back to the Buddha raising his head and readying his lips to say something to a crowd at least as frightened as we are in the presence of the mystery of death. This sounds like a Buddhist poem to me. But is it?
The Catholic theologian Karl Rahner famously referred to believers outside of the Christian tradition as “anonymous Christians” bound for a heaven their religious traditions do not even entertain.   There is something generous about this intellectual sleight of hand, which conspires to smuggle Hindus and Muslims, for example, into heaven.  But there is something unsettling and even arrogant about it too, since Hindus and Muslims presumably do not want to be Christians, or to abide eternally in the aftereffects of the Christian imagination.  I have no interest, therefore, in converting Oliver into a Buddhist against her will.  She is, as far as I can determine, a Christian, and far more likely to refer to her poems as “alleluias” than as “meditations.”  Her most recent work, moreover, particularly poems crafted since the death of her life partner, Molly Malone Cook, in 2005, evokes an array of explicitly Christian themes, not least God, the soul, loaves and fishes, and resurrection.
Still, she greets many of the standard preoccupations of Christian theology with a shrug (the afterlife, she writes, is a “foolish question”), and her work is salt-and-peppered with references to Buddhism.  An owl—one of her favorite subjects—is a “Buddha with wings”;  turtles demonstrate “Buddha-like patience”;  and a toad sitting implacable and immovable by the side of a path “might have been a Buddha.”
More importantly, mindfulness seems to be Oliver’s métier, looking and listening her scientific method and contemplative practice. “To pay attention, this is our endless and proper work,” she writes.  “Attention is the beginning of devotion.”  But paying attention is also Oliver’s way of being in the world.  It is what she does.  She looks.  She listens.  She attends.  “Listen,” this poet of mindfulness writes in “Terns,” “maybe such devotion, in which one holds the world/ in the clasp of attention, isn’t the perfect prayer,/ but it must be close.”
And what this mindful devotion does for Oliver is thrill and amaze her.  An Oliver poem called “Mindful” begins like this:
Every day
            I see or I hear
                        something
                                    that more or less
kills me
            with delight,
                        that leaves me
                                    like a needle
in the haystack
            of light.
It is what I was born for—
                                    to look, to listen . . .
If Oliver is a poet of mindful attention, she attends particularly mindfully to death.  In fact, she attends to death with a clarity equal to any living writer I know.  Her poetry seems as exquisitely calibrated as Buddhism itself to the hard realities of loss, which she calls “the great lesson.”
In my “Death and Immortality” class, my students and I explore attitudes toward death in the world’s great religious and philosophical traditions—from Jesus’s hot defiance to the Buddha’s cool acceptance.  Oliver lies closer to the founder of Buddhism here than to the founder of Christianity, but more than simply accepting death she seems to embrace it—as the secret ingredient in the recipe of nature and culture alike, the umami that somehow makes this life of suffering sweet with purpose and meaning and even mad love.
My first visit to Mary Oliver’s Provincetown began auspiciously—with the sighting of a red-tailed hawk.  As I was driving out Route 6 toward the tip of Cape Cod, I saw a large bird perched in an old oak tree by the edge of a salt marsh.  Usually a sighting like this would not stop me short, but on this day the Mary Oliver in me told me to pull over, and so I did.  As I walked back toward the tree I tried to determine whether the bird was an owl or a hawk.  As if on cue and under direction, it immediately obliged my curiosity by turning its head from side to side, revealing the distinctive profile of a hawk.  And when it flew away, flashing a brilliant red tail, I knew what sort of wild animal had visited me.
Farther down the road, I was able to locate what at least one map referred to as Blackwater Pond.  On my approach, I was surprised to see that access had been carved out in asphalt—in the form of a large, circular parking lot connecting to a series of clearly-marked walking trails around the pond.  And because it was winter, I was also surprised to see dozens of cars in the parking lot.  Out on the pond there was little to commend a poem, at least not of the Oliver variety, since her work is notorious for its single-minded focus on plants and animals.  “Few poets have fewer human beings in their poems than Mary Oliver,” the poet and novelist Stephen Dobyns once wrote, and Blackwater Pond on this day was thick with children and adults lacing up ice skates and playing hockey or twirling about on clear black ice.
During my own walk that day around and then across Blackwater Pond, I tried to honor my new guru by paying attention. I tried to glory in the natural world and to meditate, as Oliver herself seems perpetually to be doing, on change and death and loss.  But I couldn’t help thinking of Thoreau and that pesky fact that he went into town just about every day (for supplies and conviviality) during his much-hyped experiment in so-called solitude at Walden Pond.
Gradually I realized that I had been storing up pictures of Oliver making her own path through virgin woods, cutting herself on the sorts of brambles that cut into me as a boy exploring my own woods on Cape Cod.  I realized that in all likelihood she had been dodging joggers and rollerbladers on a bramble-free asphalt bike path while musing over “On Blackwater Pond.”  I found myself wondering whether she might even have made her way to this place not by foot (as I had always assumed) but by car, and maybe not in a Prius either.  I wanted to know what Oliver the poet would have to say not only about the hawks and owls that populate Blackwater Pond but also about these high-schoolers with their Gatorade bottles and I-pods and hockey sticks.  Are they immune, I wondered, from the predatory instincts she finds so frighteningly beautiful in the owl and the red-tailed hawk?  From the immortal lusts of the natural world?
As I drove home, I found myself meditating on how death and loss are married to love and abundance in Oliver’s work, but I had a hard time homing in on the familial connection.  In some of her writing, Oliver seems to take up the Romantic position that to embrace death is to befriend both truth and beauty.  A poem of hers about lilies includes this reflection:  “to be beautiful is also to be simple/and brief;  is to rise up and be glorious, and then vanish.”  A poem called “Peonies” relates the reckless beauty of these flowers, their “eagerness/to be wild and perfect for a moment, before they are/nothing, forever.”
Oliver writes repeatedly and lovingly about dogs, who reside in the limens between nature and culture, the wild and the tame.  And she prefers to walk her dog off-leash.  So it should not be surprising that her poems about love read like unleashings. Love for her is a sprint from domesticity into the wild, from calculation to abandon.  “There isn’t anything in this world but mad love.  Not in this world.  Not tame love, calm love, mild love, no so-so love.  And, of course, no reasonable love.”
One of the claims I explore with my “Death and Immortality” students is that life and love are richer and deeper once you realize that nothing is immortal. “Doesn’t everything die at last, and too soon?” Oliver asks.  Each of us is “a customer of death coming.” But Oliver’s takeaway is not to hasten to a funeral home (or, for that matter, a nunnery), but to live wildly and love madly, to imitate the peony and the lily in bloom, the dog sprinting off its leash after sea spray and seagulls.
A friend recently introduced me to a prose poem by Oliver that had somehow eluded me.  It is now my favorite piece by her, the John 3:16 in my Gospel according to Mary Oliver:
You are young.  So you know everything.  You leap
into the boat and begin rowing.  But listen to me.
Without fanfare, without embarrassment, without
any doubt, I talk directly to your soul.  Listen to me.
Lift the oars from the water, let your arms rest, and
your heart, and heart’s little intelligence, and listen to
me.  There is life without love.  It is not worth a bent
penny, or a scuffed shoe.  It is not worth the body of a
dead dog nine days unburied.  When you hear, a mile
away and still out of sight, the churn of the water
as it begins to swirl and roil, fretting around the
sharp rocks – when you hear that unmistakable
pounding – when you feel the mist on your mouth
and sense ahead the embattlement, the long falls
plunging and steaming – then row, row for your life
toward it.
There is so much I love about this poem.  I love that it is set on the water, and in nothing more elaborate than a rowboat.  I love the words “roil” and “fretting,” and the fact that they are separated by nothing more than a comma.  I love the provocation that life without love is nothing.  But mostly I love the surprise at the end, which turns this poem into a short story of sorts;  did she really say toward all that danger?
Although Oliver’s poetry is notorious for neglecting human subjects, I find real insight here into not only the “great lesson” of loss but also the equally great lesson of love.  In a poem called “Gratitude,” Oliver brings these two subjects together.  “Have I not loved as though the beloved could vanish at any moment, or become preoccupied, or whisper a name other than mine in the stretched curvatures of lust, or over the dinner table?”  The answer, as readers of Oliver’s extraordinary poetry will instantly know, is yes.
So what about my experiment in the Dao of Mary Oliver?  How did that go?
Not so well, I’m afraid.  I did venture out, umbrella free, into virtually every storm I have encountered over the last few months. I paid better attention to the red-tailed hawks and blue herons that populate the salt marsh behind the cottage where I live—and, I suspect, to my friends as well.  I continued to love impossibly, and tried to accept the losses that wild love brings.  And while I did once get up once to greet the sunrise, glorying in that moment like the birth of a new child, I haven’t set my alarm that early since.
Still, my efforts to walk in the footsteps of Mary Oliver have brought me a stronger sense of my own mortality, a stronger determination to love madly whatever the cost, and a new mantra:  “joy before death.”  This mantra comes from Oliver’s poem “Blossoms,” which recalls for me the pond near my boyhood home, thick every spring with bullfrogs and possibilities.  And though it is about beginnings, because it is about beginnings, this poem seems an appropriate place to end this walk.
In April
the ponds open
like black blossoms,
the moon
swims in every one;
there’s fire
everywhere: frogs shouting
their desire,
their satisfaction. What
we know: that time
chops at us all like an iron
hoe, that death
is a state of paralysis. What
we long for: joy
before death, nights
in the swale – everything else
can wait but not
this thrust
from the root
of the body. What
we know: we are more
than blood – we are more
than our hunger and yet
we belong
to the moon and when the ponds
open, when the burning
begins the most
thoughtful among us dreams
of hurrying down
into the black petals
into the fire,
into the night where time lies shattered
into the body of another.

I Was There(Great)...Again
Trumpur(i)nations to us All! We’re all bout to get pissed on!
Washington DC resembled that of a (I’m told) harry potter fog/ whitey? people game of thrones dystopian nightmare. But mostly Dark Knight. I don’t know if it was Trump jacking Bane’s speech with grim, hitler-esque tones of totalitarian madness or the bird flocks looming feverishly around the white house like a wild pack of bats, but it was a spot on parallel to everyone’s worst knightmares rolled into a huge piece of frightful blockbuster entertainment. And the reality show rolls on.
The sky looked like dark knighttime and blinding day white at the same time (and not just the fact that trump’s fan club was almost exclusively white).
Insane amount of security, took 45 minutes to walk through a checkpoint. These did not exist at Obama’s inauguration, where there was WAY MORE PEOPLE, who was gloriously happy, singing Bob Dylan, and being vaguely observed by like 14 snipers. That brilliant day eight years ago, people flooded the mall, search-free, and though it was far colder, everyone was warm. It was a great day. This, this was something entirely different. Took almost an hour to get through the ridiculous line, but not after security dramatically broke the stick that was supporting my NODAPL sign, with white priv trump bros taunting me with “just like your broken dreams”. Once inside, it was clear no one was there, just a hitler-esque speech about carnage and a war on muslimism. It was bleak to say the last. This is what the end of America sounds like.
Had to get away from the terrible sounds of hatred and racism and found far more people protesting nearby. Saw a busted up limo, though no evidence of who did it, and it was claimed later the vehicle was set on fire. So the chants got louder and then the masses came out, still peaceful, but heated. They used the limo thing to justify pepper spraying everyone ever, including elder women who were just singing. Then they  started dropping bombs like WW7 and people were running down the streets for their lives. The blockbuster movie again. Retreating in the park nearby, hearing the bombs dropping, there was talk of a soldier who was experiencing PTSD by being there; chaos was everywhere. I heard everyone smoked at 4:20 into trump’s speech, which I distantly smelled, but mine was a smoke cloud of terror. When it was all said and not done, peoples’ eyes were burning, horrid smells of berning encompassed city blocks, chemicals were taste-able in the air, 200 arrests of people rounded up in the area that did nothing now facing insane felony charges; the city was on fire….not a strong start.
The Awokening
The following day was like a waking of a dead collective unconscious. There were so many people flooding the streets. Just maybe there are some good people left. It was reassuring, yet heartbreaking to think what they and their children will have to endure. On the way out, saw a Muslim man being arrested outside an apartment building in VA. Probable coincidence but weird sight nonetheless, chilling past future reminders of the madness ahead and behind.
Walking with all the people, the women, the children, so many clever signs, it was a breathtaking image. The celebrity scene was tight too. Lil’ bigg Mikey Moore was there again, inspiring us to action through his humor, his confessed crippling social anxiety, and the beginning of an anti-trump satire movement. Scarlett Johansen seemed to get it, and Ashley Judd’s words chilled to the very core. Madonna was a little questionable, particularly her performance, but the indigo girls soothed with a once popular uplifting 90s vibe, we have to bring that sound with us into this uncertain future. There’s something about the wonder of the unknown that seemed exciting, not frightening, on the capitol that day. That if there are enough good people still left in this country, we really might use this horror show to create something amazing. The revolutionary shift is truly upon us now, people are getting woke AF, etc. Uplifting, inspiring, and lots of chanting. “Show me what democracy looks like “ “This is what Democracy looks like. “ “Whose streets?” “our streets!” (not wall street), we even threw a couple “Bernie would have wons” into the mix; it was not difficult to get that one going quick et loud. Flooding through the streets with the largest crowd I’ve ever marched with, full of so many passionate, compassionate women and human beings, was truly glorious expression of an engaged political process that works of the people, for the people, and by the people.
Non-Alternative Facts
To be clear, There were WAY MORE PEOPLE at the womens’ march than the Inauguration
The women’s march was a reassuring, hopeful bucket of sunshine compared to the apocolypto ****show I had witnessed the day before. And there were a ton more people there. I repeat : There were way, way MORE PEOPLE AT THE MARCH ON SATURDAY, no matter how much the fake media actual photos tries to lie to us with facts. And for the record, way more of those who actually showed up Friday were there to protest Donny, and everyone there Saturday was protesting him except twelve embarrassed/angry trumpets, so the numbers are not in his favor. FAUX FACTcheck
There was a point with an engaged discussion between trumpets and non-trumpets that was uplifting, hopeful, and something different to see. Most of the exchanges between us were heckles.
One month Down…so far Down to go
My journey was wrapping up in DC, but only beginning to unwrap for life after Donny. As long as maniacs roam free in that tainted house I kept staring at in wonder and disgust, the fight will continue. As long as injustice and inhumanity occurs, WE the people will be here.
I walk past the massive sign displays lining a fence, greatly resembling a certain future Mexican wall, only these were expressing messages of hope and peace, not division and hatred. I left a couple of the signs I had been carrying around all day against the fence. I hope this incredible art piece stays here until Trump is impeached, but I am told they were all burned later that night by Trump’s thug brigade fan boys. Ew L Though this week has been a shakey start (understatement of the century), the marches and protests come to confirm what we knew all along: this country is great because of those who stay involved, not those who stay in charge.
 REVELATION NATION
It’s more than kinda crazy we rejected a qualified woman running for prez for the most sexist, sexual assaulting, and least qualified man to ever run for prez. Double Slap in the face for women, and now trumps tryin to close planned parenthood and ban abortion so it as a reaction to all those things and much more. nobody there cared that hill dawg didnt get a divorce. i know i dont.
This man can shove his way into our heads and twitterings and blood and infect us with the new old fascists amerika that was always there but you tried not to talk about til that black dude left the room.
What has happened here today leaves many stunned, punched, and wanting to move to Europe. But there’s no escape from tyranny, there’s no escape from dictatorship or racism or the few with so much wanting to keep it at the expense of their fellow people. (well maybe Sweden?) When there is enough for us all but some want more and that’s ok because “I worked for it” but don’t see how it’s the rich we should blame. The working poor felt the sadness, the women felt it--
Do you believe us now, do you feel how fragile your life really was and the floor slipping out from under the poor. “I wont be affected” you will, plus that kinda makes you sound like a dick bag, big time.
We are each other, one people. If there is injustice , it must be made right, and especially by those more so in the position to do and not suffering the same as those oppressed most, our Fellow Humans.
And we’ve lost Ourselves, only to find Ourselves
We have much to fight for now, don’t you see?
This is the point in the world… this is it.
No exaggerating, no whammy—just WHAM
I saw it but I still don’t believe it.
The sinking feeling that swept the crowd under a fog that was darkness but blinding white
Is it snowing
Are there bombs going off
YES, and you will have nightmares for weeks, but that’s nothing compared to four years, four more minutes
and the city burns, and not in the good berning way, the way that makes you see that the inherent flaws within capitalism and this great experiment of democracy that has truly succumbed to the inescapable corruptions of man. THAT kinda way
8 years ago it was all different. Funny to think. Makes you laugh that painful cringe that turns a stomach
In the way that Ashley judd could catapult southern words into our shivering goosebumped souls-
It wasn’t even cold, not raining like the yesterdays of inaugurations-
How long ago that must have been
We are Fighting for what we are Living for
Why bother? Everyone has their reasons—the families gathered here are fueled by love
Why did people vote for trump? Everyone has their reasons
Mostly action comes from places pushed to walls, bumps of dissatisfaction
we’ve grown too irritated to keep scratching, maybe we’re just tired
Meryl Lynch Streep
And even when the most beloved women who the public idolized like a star in the sky, defended the cripples and those who were different, and even those who weren’t. she herself was not defended, instead the public began to question even her trusted voice of wisdom, they questioned very facts as presented by a corporate fueled source-well I guess that part did make a little more sense-but they weren’t asking the right questions
Who made the choice---when we think we’re doing something on own , hand tied to its pupeteer.
“You’re a puppet. “no YOU’RE the puppet”
We’re ALL PUPPETS, getting played by the puppeteer, and now it’s gotten worse,
How do we get out of this nowwwww ---sinkink sinking sink holes earthquakes?
You did technically want it this way. depravity enforced, we can all speak our filthy little minds now
But it pushes you somewhere when things got lost so lost
We can cry and be babies and we are but we need to get out there now
Put bodies in ideas, action in passive, standing but sitting (in)
Just to clarify in a time where Nothing is Clear:
man-hating feminists? they been calling women who stand up for womens' rights that forever-don’t let it get to us now !! and not on our big day !
the trumpers sc(r)ewed perspective is less credible than Trump thinks CNN is. yeah no, i was there, the women were standing up for themselves, with a bunch of men with them in solidarity. if anything they might have been angry at specific white dudes taking away their rights...makes sense. This blind love of trump twists reality, and reasoning has mostly gone out of open close-minded windows.  1) they weren't specifically anti-pro life, whatever that is, they spoke to maintaining planned parenthood and affordable womens' healthcare. 2) there were tons and tons of organizers who've worked on a variety of campaigns, so it's possible one has questionable ties. this should in no sense discredit the event. 3) i saw no volugarity, just an inspirational crowd of men and women who care about the future for them and their children. im sure some would be offended by some things throughout the march, but that will happen in a ginormous crowd of passionate people, made up of families, women, and men all coming together peacefully. thought it was super non-vulgar
Inspiration Nation
honestly, there is something very wrong and darkly twisted within this current ray of disarray, trump, all his cabinet picks, all of it. Examine the true direction of this country, the true nature of the people living here. Stop allowing misinformed, destruction to keep circulating as news. This will not stand but know there are many to resist on all sides, that’s why we need to all join the same team. There are 99% of us getting wrecked and everything else is a distraction, keep us fighting, keep it us vs. us, when everyone knows it has and will always be (until we unite) US vs THEM. In the past, people waking up to it, those who are hip to it and get others on board, well we know what happens to them. That’s why this many of us getting pissed off, standing up to corrupt leaders across the world, we will finally reach the ultimate level of our strength in numbers (plus there’s more people on the planet now than there’s ever been, and that’s a hard fact to be faux).
Is it possible we can actually win now, again, yet for the first time? We have no other choice. The tipping point is upon us, environmentally, there is no choice. Socially, religiously, economically, there is no choice. Make or break, do or die, stay WOKE but get WOKER, and much, much quicker. People have been fighting for this for years , they’ve laid the groundwork, now for the berners and youthers and lovers and thinkers and dreamers-- to bring it home. You’ve been informed (shout out to Bernard on this one),  you can no longer keep your heads sandy and your hearts wavering. Join us, the militia pax, the war of peace, THE fight-it must be fought, has been fought, will be fought. No choice left but to WIN.
