eschatology
i’m confident that the absolute dregs of possibility for this society, the sugary coffee mound at the bottom of this cup, our last best hope that when our little bit of assigned plasma implodes  it won’t go down as a green mark in the cosmic ledger, lies in the moment when you say hello to a bus driver  and they say it back—
when someone holds the door open for you  and you do a little jog to meet them where they are—
walking my dog, i used to see this older man  and whenever I said good morning,  he replied ‘GREAT morning’—
in fact, all the creative ways our people greet each other may be the icing on this flaming trash cake hurtling through the ether.
when the clerk says how are you  and i say ‘i’m blessed and highly favored’
i mean my toes have met sand, and wiggled in it, a lot.  i mean i have laughed until i choked and a friend slapped my back. i mean my niece wrote me a note: ‘you are so smart + intellajet’
i mean when we do go careening into the sun,
i’ll miss crossing guards ushering the grown folks too, like ducklings  and the lifeguards at the community pool and men who yelled out the window that they’d fix the dent in my car,  right now! it’d just take a second—
and actually everyone who tried to keep me alive, keep me afloat,  and if not unblemished, suitably repaired.
but I won’t feel too sad about it, becoming a star

[author's note below the readmore]
Link to poem + the below info at poets.org.
“This poem started out as being about the everyday moments that sustain us, born from an interaction with a bus driver. Due, probably, to both the times we live in and my generally apocalyptic character, it also became a poem about the end of the world. From the perspective of Western theology, eschatology often implies a straight line between the beginning of time and our inevitable doom. As an Afrofuturist, I have a less linear view of life and death. I think the links between ancestry and the future are blurry and cyclical. Anyway, we really are stardust.” —Eve L. Ewing
Eve L. Ewing is a poet, essayist, and sociologist of education. She is the author of 1919 (Haymarket Books, 2019) and Electric Arches (Haymarket Books, 2017), among several other books. She is the recipient of fellowships from MacDowell, USA Artists, and New America, and has received awards from the American Library Association. Ewing lives in Chicago.

Happy to be able to say that I have read at least two of the seven (and I'm pretty sure I've read from Jamila Woods as well, but I haven't yet been able to recall where) and can make recommendations:
Electric Arches by Eve L. Ewing
There Are More Beautiful Things Than Beyoncé by Morgan Parker
Magical Negro also by Morgan Parker

Join Rogue, Gambit, Nightcrawler, Jubilee, and Wolverine on explosive super hero adventures. Uncanny as ever, the X-Men are back to saving the day mutant-style!
"I think X-Fans are special in that we identify with having something different about us...and you're going to feel that in this book, and what it means to have that thing about you that's different, or exceptional. We go deep into the emotional part of that," Simone told the crowd.
"David Marquez is the perfect artist for this book," she continued. "He does amazing action, amazing character work, and he’s really excited about getting into the characters appearing in this book. I knew from the very first panel that this book was going to be super exciting and gorgeous. He just knows how to knock it out of the park!"
X-MEN

Art by Ryan Stegman
On Sale 7/10
Krakoa is no more… but the X-Men fight on! From their new base in Alaska, the X-Men raise a flag of defiance! Join Cyclops, Beast, Magneto, Psylocke, Kid Omega, Temper (formerly Oya), Magik and Juggernaut as they assemble against new forces, battling for the destiny and philosophy of the mutant species. EXCEPTIONAL X-MEN
Written by Eve L. Ewing
Art by Carmen Carnero
On Sale 9/4
Mutantkind’s two greatest teachers mold the next generation of X-Men! Kate Pryde has returned home to Chicago following the war with Orchis. Having stepped away from the world of mutantdom, she is nevertheless called back into action as she crosses paths with a trio of new young mutants, Bronze, Axo, and Melee, who clearly need training and guidance. Unfortunately for Kate, Emma Frost thinks so as well!
"Longtime fans of Kitty Pryde can count on the kinds of adventures you expect from her as a classic favorite, while I hope new and old readers alike will get to love this all-new team of young mutants," Ewing shared. "Kitty, the one-time kid sister figure of the X-Men, has to reckon with her own memories—good and bad—of being a child of Xavier as she navigates a role as leader and mentor for a new generation of mutants who are trying to make their way in a time of crisis."
"I always try to strike a chord between appealing to veteran comics fans and new readers, but since so many people fell in love with the X-Men as teens and this book is about a team of young folks, that feels especially important to me here," she continued. "I hope that for some 13- or 14-year-old readers, this might be the first comic book they pick up.
"Working on this series has been a ton of fun already, as Carmen Carnero's art is bringing so much dynamism to these pages and the entire X-team of writers is in a flurry sharing scripts and feedback and ideas," she added.

Black Panther Gets New Solo Series in June 2023
Tumblr media
John Ridley’s Black Panther run will come to a close with issue #15, but in June 2023 writer Eve L. Ewing and artist Chris Allen will begin a new Black Panther series. Above is the promotion artwork for Black Panther by RAHZZAH.
Said Ewing on taking the reins from Ridley, when “I found out where the [John] Ridley run is going to end, I had to laugh. No spoilers, but the status quo is going to be more than a little disrupted. But I've always believed that the fun of writing these characters is not completely ignoring or undoing what your predecessor did, nor is it simply continuing with their story line—it's taking the reins from the place where they left the story, and accepting the challenge to make it your own. In this case, I can say that I'm extremely geeked about the ways we're picking up where he leaves off." (Marvel Comics)
Black Panther #1 goes on sale in June 2023.

what I mean when I say I'm sharpening my oyster knife
I mean I'm here to eat up all the ocean you thought was yours. I mean I brought my own quarter of a lemon, tart and full of seeds. I mean I'm a tart. I'm a bad seed. I'm a red-handled thing and if you move your eyes from me I'll cut the tender place where your fingers meet. I mean I never met a dish of horseradish I didn't like. I mean you're a twisted and ugly root and I'm the pungent, stinging firmness inside. I mean I look so good in this hat with a feather and I'm a feather and I'm the heaviest featherweight you know. I mean you can't spell anything I talk about with that sorry alphabet you have left over from yesterday. I mean when I see something dull and uneven, barnacled and ruined, I know how to get to its iridescent everything. I mean I eat them alive. what I mean is I'll eat you alive, slipping the blade in sideways, cutting nothing because the space was always there.
"No, I do not weep at the world—I am too busy sharpening my oyster knife." –Zora Neale Hurston
