In Chichester Cathedral there is a tomb called the Arundel tomb. It has faded and worn over the centuries, but what remains are the figures holding hands. Philip Larkin wrote a poem about it, observing that Love is all there is and will survive, while the history, wealth and power of the occupants of the tomb has faded. The drawing is influenced by Hockney, Klee and Duchamp, especially his Raw art movement (outsider art). I did the charcoal drawing quickly, almost automative and without getting bogged down in too much thought. I just wanted to explore my reaction to the tomb in a spontaneous way.

Everything is impermanent, Mike Heseltine

Inspired by the Fleming tomb in Lincoln cathedral. The Bishop had his tomb made showing two representations of himself. One as the traditional sculpture but another beneath which shows his body decomposing. It is a reminder that however noble you may become in life, we all experience the same in death. The drawing is done using charcoal pencils on white watercolour paper. The paper gave a nice rough surface for the charcoal to bite into, producing a textured line. Cathedrals in the UK are an attractive source of inspiration. The mix of Heaven and Earth, present in one place, provides material for drawings that explore the metaphysical.

Letting go of our thoughts is key to meditation. This painting is a continuation of the series of drawings I have done about a moment an owl hovered above me. In that moment, I had no thoughts, being mesmerised by the bird. I think chance meetings with wildlife often present us with a moment similar to that of being in meditation. There is a stillness and timeless feeling which descends upon us. All thoughts fade away as we become totally present in the moment. In meditation, we are taught to let the thoughts come and acknowledge them, but then let them go. This picture is about that process, with the central figure being still. The painting is done using acrylic on handmade paper. I limited the colouring to blue washes, mindful of Rothko's technique. The solitary figure echoes the stillness I felt. There is no observer without the observed. A zen Buddhism concept. I love the work of Rothko and used his two colour approach to generate a mood for the painting. I enjoy doing spirituality pictures, using nature as a starting point to explore religious concepts and teachings. The bird and I exist because we observe each other.

Cathedrals have a stillness, despite the movement of people. I find he stillness calms the mind, like meditation, letting go of our thoughts. This drawing is of the Joan de Vere tomb in Chichester Cathedral. The restful pose, depicts the ultimate stillness that we will experience. It is comforting in it's peacefulness, while outside there is the chatter and anxiety of everyday life. The light poured in from the large stained glass window. It beckoned us with its warmth. The features on the face of the tomb, like the individual within, had faded. The more I lost myself in the tomb, the more peaceful I felt. The illusion of separateness, from the tomb, the light and everything around me, became less.

This charcoal drawing was inspired by the Pink Floyd lyrics from the album The dark side of the moon. Society is represented by the 'Keep of the grass' sign, encouraging all of us to conform to the common path. Those who stray are condemned as being odd or even mad. However, some people who do not conform end up being the inspiration for new discoveries. Kandinsky talked about a moving triangle containing the worlds population. At each point a solitary figure works alone, pulling the triangle over the new ground they have found. An example would be Van Gogh, who never sold a painting but eventually society has accepted his work as that of a genius. The ground he discovered has now been passed over by most of the triangle. This drawing is done on slightly tinted paper with charcoal pencils. I treat my drawings as an extension of the thinking process, rather than producing a finished picture. As a result, one can see areas that have been rubbed out and redrawn, which captures a time element as I redirect my thoughts. I feel the result can have an integrity, which has not been compromised. I work mostly in black and white, as to introduce colour can dilute and confuse the process of thinking on the paper.

Letting go of our thoughts is essential when practicing meditation. This sketch is a continuation of the series of drawings I did about an owl hovering above me. In that moment thoughts evaporated. In meditation, we are taught to let the thoughts drift away. This picture is about that process, with the central figure being still. It is done in black ink on paper. The sketch is a religious image with the moon shining down, representing the Zen philosophy.

Drawn while listening to Organ music being played in Chester Cathedral. I was aware of the tomb beneath the organ and how the vibrations must have been waking the dead. I completed the charcoal drawing on paper in a quick and spontaneous way, almost automative drawing, wishing to connect the rhythms of the architecture with the rhythms of the music.
