Oh, you’re not volunteering. It’s called community service. And you wouldn’t be doing it if you didn’t pull the fire alarm during your I.Q. test. I wouldn’t be doing it if you hadn’t arrested me.

I was kind of curious: What do you think of Persephone's therapy scenes in episodes 160-161?
I personally liked them, but you and many other LO critics always seem to see things that totally flew over my head (I mean that in a positive way).
I think the idea behind them was fine, just the execution that felt really half-baked. Rachel doesn't like scenes to sit too long so the therapy scene, of course, wound up being rushed in the course of 2-3 episodes (meaning she had to have Persephone dump everything all at once) and while Persephone's dialogue is handled relatively well, the direction of the scene itself feels entirely mismanaged (which is both a side effect of Rachel's directionless writing and the fact that she clearly doesn't want to do more than one of these kinds of episodes so she needs to speedrun it).
TRIGGER WARNING: Discussion concerning sexual assault ahead!
Like, let's start with Persephone's intent in going to therapy. Wanting to pursue therapy doesn't just happen suddenly, there's usually a "trigger event" to make someone realize "I need help", whether it be hitting rock bottom or even just going "I feel like I don't have the skills or tools necessary to deal with what I'm dealing with, I need a professional opinion".
Despite Eros advising her to go to therapy all the way back in S1 to address her assault-
Tumblr media
-she actually finally goes to therapy in S2 not to address the assault, but to address... how she feels insecure in comparison to Hera who she just found out Hades had a long-term affair with??? At least that's definitely the implication.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then of course the therapy session itself segues immediately into "Persephone is a high achiever and it's because of her mom being overbearing" which Rachel doesn't connect at all to either the SA or her feeling insecure compared to Hera (which, by the way, barely even has anything to do with her, but she didn't - and still doesn't - have the emotional maturity or self-respect to realize that Hades is a serial cheater-)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That's where the first therapy episode cuts off, and then the next episode immediately opens with Persephone writing her entire backstory on a whiteboard, so we can assume time has passed and she's talked about everything from her childhood up until this point.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then we get Chiron asking Persephone... what could go wrong if she leaves TGOEM??
Tumblr media
Even though we never saw any of the actual sequence so it just feels like a question that's coming out of nowhere? Like did Persephone say during that schpeel that she wanted to leave TGOEM? Isn't that something we should have seen to connect these two trains of thought?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ah, right, because we have to get into Hades. Because this comic fails the Bechdel test so hard it can't even have a character talk about their trauma or childhood without it seguing into "well there's this one specific main character guy I just really wanna sleep with-"
Don't get me wrong, if Rachel is trying to "deconstruct purity culture" here, I can get her angle with this, if Persephone has been "groomed her entire life" to be an eternal maiden then there's clearly some thought processes about sexual attraction there that are being challenged by her attraction to Hades. But it just feels so rushed purely for the sake of getting her through her trauma and childhood problems and everything that Rachel tacked onto her backstory (in an attempt to make her seem more than just a self-insert) so that Rachel can get her back on track to sleeping with Hades, the one and only man she's clearly ever felt sexual attraction to enough to want to leave TGOEM and question her entire childhood.
And then we get this and I just-
Tumblr media
Like first of all, again, Persephone being a complete airhead and not realizing that it has less to do with her possibly being an inadequate partner and more to do with Hades being a serial cheater who also used her as an emotional affair partner;
but ALSO the fact that the conclusion is some "eureka" moment of "you're a bad decision maker" ??? I was a fan of the comic still when this scene happened and even I went "huh?"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like she doesn't bother to try and connect it to everything she just learned and said about her childhood and how she wants to be the "perfect daughter" who will make everyone happy, Chiron just reduces it to "oh you just suck at making decisions". As if "sucking at making decisions" isn't like, a reactionary extension of deeper problems. She's treating it as if Persephone is some "puzzle" to be solved and her being a "bad decision maker" was the answer when it's undoubtedly just one of many side effects of her upbringing. It feels like she's addressing the cough and not the virus.
Also a little off topic but-
Tumblr media
Gotta love how we've never seen Persephone actually employ this homework from her therapist because she's constantly stapled to Hades and the only thing she cares about is his happiness. Literally, I don't think Persephone could possibly answer that question because she's never been independent enough to even learn what makes her happy - she's jumped from wanting to make her mother happy to wanting to make Hades happy but we're supposed to condemn the former and celebrate the latter.
Buuut of course we don't get her answering that question because again, Rachel can't spend more than 30 seconds on a single scene because that would demand too much writing and thought from her. So we cut to Hera having a discussion with Asclepius regarding her scars re-opening, yadda yadda.
By the time we cut back to the therapy session at the start of the next episode (that's three episodes that have been spent basically accomplishing nothing because none of the thought threads tie together in a meaningful way beyond what the audience has to assume) Chiron is conveniently wrapping things up and it's then and only then does Rachel try to actually incorporate the SA plotline that was Persephone's ORIGINAL MOTIVATION in going to therapy.
Tumblr media
Now, the scene for the most part is fine, I don't really like how the therapy session was written leading up to it, but her describing her freeze response and how she feels guilty she couldn't "fight back" is a very real feeling that I can definitely say was well written.
My one gripe with it though - and sure, this might be nitpicky, but here me out - is this:
Tumblr media
I don't particularly like that Chiron the therapist just found out about her patient being a rape victim - someone who's also said she doesn't like people grabbing her / touching her without her consent - and then decides the best course of action is to comfort her... while touching her.
Now I want to make it perfectly clear, it's not against the law or even the code of ethics to make physical contact between a therapist and their patient. Loads of patients have made breakthroughs with their therapists that have called for hugs and while some therapists may not be okay with it, there are definitely therapists who are who fully understand that hugs in those moments are the best thing for a person. But it's still a general boundary that is there and even with patients who aren't victims of SA, consent needs to be asked for / given.
So Chiron just... coming over and touching Persephone on the knee, while undoubtedly seen as a "warm and comforting act" by those who have had similar sessions with their own therapists or even just those who have no clue and see it on the surface level as being "sweet", really irks me, because it just seems so tone deaf to do with a character like Persephone who is supposed to be a victim of having her bodily autonomy taken away from her.
Again, it's a small criticism, and undoubtedly a nitpick in the eyes of some, but a simple "can I give you a hug?" from either Chiron or Persephone would have gone a long way in accomplishing Persephone's need for consent and bodily autonomy a lot more than just having Chiron come up and touch her leg without her consent. Please, for the love of god, let Persephone have some autonomy, asking for consent doesn't ruin the moment.
And that's pretty much it, Persephone talks about how she feels like she's tethered to Apollo, and Chiron assures her that's not the case, session over, Persephone goes outside to Hades aaaand notice how we never actually tackled that "I feel insecure because of my partner having former partners?" thing? Notice how the best we got was her talking about her fears of being an "inadequate partner" which focused entirely on her not being "enough" for Hades and being a "bad decision maker" rather than pointing out 1.) Hades' own faults in being a serial cheater that would undoubtedly contribute to her insecurities and 2.) what Persephone could do for Hades rather than what Hades could do for Persephone? It's always "I don't know if I'm good enough for him" and never "I don't know if he's good enough for me."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yet another F-- on Lore Olympus' Bechdel test. Every single thing tacked onto Persephone's backstory is meant purely to get her with Hades - TGOEM is just an obstacle preventing her from having sex with Hades, the assault is just a framing device to show how much "better" Hades is for Persephone than Apollo, her overbearing childhood is just to show how much more "free" she is now that she's not living with her mother and is living with Hades instead, etc.
No agency, no autonomy, no character, even when it tries.

I was reading about the 1* bard again because she's funny as hell, and just found out they adjusted Chaive's talent (on CN) to only affect robots!! Like yes that was always the intent but it ruins the ability to reuse a wombo stun/fragile with her and Thermal (and Castle buffing the boom). I'm inconsolable but will still try this with them when I can even though she suffers the one star redeploy
Yeah I saw this coming when they did this change for Chiave a few months back and sure enough, the Palicos from Monster Hunter were our first 1 stars that were not robots. It's another perfect detail that adds to how delightfully awful she is.
But, think about it another way. This DOES open up the possibility for higher rarity robot operators. Maybe a battlebot controlled by Closure? She IS officially listed as an operator even if she normally just manages engineering and day to day maintenance.
Also, I actually think Eureka will have a niche. The ability to stun their own allies used to be unique to Conviction's S2 when everyone runs their S1, and stunning your allies can be quite useful if an enemy's passing by that you don't want to attack (such as a flagbearer, or a Seaborn pocket crawler) or block (like Gopnik). you could also always just run her with Lumen (another welfare! it's free synergy!) so as soon as her stunbomb hits both enemies and allies, Lumen slaps your operators awake immediately and you get a free 7.5 second beatdown on the enemy.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters GX Episodes 95 and 96 Subbed (Finalized)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Previously: Episodes 93 and 94 Subbed [Finalized])
(Check out my Subbed!GX Stream Masterpost!)
TURN-95: A Ruthless Brotherly Duel -- Ryou VS Shou
Wishing for his kind and respectable brother to be himself again, Shou challenges the Hell Kaiser to a duel. But a callous Ryou conditions it on having a duel in which an electric current will rush through them with every drop in their Life Points. And so, a brotherly duel begins between Ryou and Shou. Shou does develop his dueling--respecting his opponent as always--but Ryou pounces on him, in full command of the Cyber Style's Reverse deck.
TURN-96: The Relativity Field! Judai VS the Genius Doctor
In order to take back one of his important keys, a Saiou struck by the Waves of Light once again sends in an assassin against Judai. The assassin is Zweinstein, a genius physics expert with a deck made logically--Judai's weakest point of all. Zweinstein activates his Relativity Field to start things off. He then summons* a Monster that negates Judai's Fusion, his forte, gaining an edge as the duel unfolds. *This is referencing Singularity Demon's effect in the episode, but he doesn't actually summon it; it's more of a hand-trap he discards to negate Fusion.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Got my subs for episodes 95 and 96 all nice and finalized!
These two episodes are a great time, but 95 in particular is great. It's the culmination of those little bits we've had of Shou observing Ryou's fall from grace since his loss to Ed, knowing he'd face him one day and preparing himself for it, and the whole time they're dueling, he holds onto some hope that he can turn Ryou back into the big brother he knew--only to realize by the end that Ryou, after what he's seen underground, really is just focused on winning, willing to be as "cruel" or "foul" as it takes if it helps. You do feel for the little guy, moreso when this gets flashed back to in 137 during Season 3 (another favorite, as it's a big development episode for Shou). Also, Judai being a friend and watching over him knowing this was his choice to make, building him up about using Power Bond, rushing over once the duel's over--it's sweet.
96 is also one of my favorites because of the good art/dynamic animation, courtesy of Kyoung Soo Lee's animation team (especially those last few scenes after Judai destroys Relativity Field, but just the Solid Vision putting them in space the entire time). The premise isn't too bad, we check in with Misawa who's realizing that just joining the Society of Light isn't enough for him to make a name for himself, and he bumps into God Einstein Zweinstein who tells him that logic beats "coincidence," before he tries to convey this to Judai and prove his Grand Unified Duel Theory. I like the Dueling Physics idea and the Einstein parody (he won a Nobelly Prize!), and the match between his logic and Judai's intuition--and who doesn't enjoy the randomness of Misawa's extra Eureka moment, lmao. Still a bit meh on it being the last we see of him for a while, but it is nice seeing him when he does come back. (Also, I like how it's not at all mentioned how Ojin managed to get a recording of Chronos calling for Judai to trick him with... very GX lol)
Edit-wise, both episodes had a fair amount of animation error fixes I applied; 95 saw more card-related errors than the quick one in 96, while both had a fair share of more quality-of-watching ones with split-screens, incomplete footage frames, or miscolorings (and in Burstlady's case, another missing shoulder strap). Due to Tumblr’s dumb link limit in posts yeeting them out of the tags used for them and limiting their reach, and since I still wanted a visual element to it, I’ve made a separate post here with my usual fix/edit breakdown for the interested--altogether, that's about 26 between both episodes, which I think I hit sometime in S1 when doing double-releases for a bit, but since most were quality-of-watching things, they were pretty quick to work on for the most part.
Anywho, enjoy! Looking forward to revisiting 97 and 98 next as we circle back to the Pro Leagues and get Ed's best episode of the Season in the process; as Judai put it in 96's preview for 97, "Ed's Wheel of Fortune'll suddenly start to turn..."
hello! first of all i really, really love your metas and it's such a joy to read them ❤️ i'd be very interested to know what you think aziraphale's smile in the elevator meant? i've been a bit baffled by it for a long time and i just cannot come to a conclusion. sorry if this has been asked before/you've already written about it!
hi anon!!!💕 that's really kind of you to say, thank you!!!
so i did indeed answer a similar ask, but it was a while ago now, so ive just reread through to see if my opinion remains the same (oftentimes it frankly varies with the wind), and im still reasonably of the mindset that his smile is aziraphale coming up with a plan/doubling down on some kind of 'im not here to go along with your plan, im here to make a difference'.
now a lot of that conclusion does hinge on my personal thought that aziraphale is aware that metatron is trying to play him, that there is an unspoken threat or intimidation going on, and that aziraphale has just gone through the FF thinking he has no choice but to go back to heaven, lest he (and crowley, potentially) be put in danger if he doesn't. imo he's entered the FF with the mindset of 'making a difference', bc if he doesn't have a choice in the matter, he might as well go and instead further his own agenda whilst he's there. but do it with crowley, because they're on the same side.
essentially, i think aziraphale is speaking throughout the whole FF in a way that doesn't tip off the metatron that he's anything other than heaven's man, and also speaking in a way that doesn't alert crowley to the situation that they'd be in if aziraphale were to refuse the promotion. the blindside is that crowley understandably refuses to come with him, kisses him as a last-ditch attempt for him to stay, and leaves when aziraphale deals the killing blow - and the metatron drops the bombshell that is the second coming.
so when he's in the lift, you visibly see him start to panic - one last look at crowley, deep breath, and into the lift, all before he starts to breath heavily through his mouth, face lax in shock, etc. but as we hit the credits, he's stiffened up, gotten himself under controlled, and schooled his face.
Tumblr media
frankly, i find these expressions way more alarming than the ending smile itself, but i genuinely think it's aziraphale running through everything he knows in his head, attempting to sift through possible ways in which he can make his first step, whilst keeping his expression as calm and collected as possible infront of the metatron. kinda like a game of chess - white has made its opening move, and he's running through all the different responses that could set the foundation for the entire match. i see aziraphale as a very capable analytical thinker, so - for me - this tracks.
and then it all culminates in one final moment:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
his head tips back, his eyes actually move and flit around (as if he's had a eureka moment), and the tightness in his face - particularly around his eyes - relaxes. now, i don't necessarily think aziraphale suddenly has it all worked out, not at all, but whether it's him working out at least the first move he can make, or him simply steeling himself after a thorough pep-talk that he's going to see this farce through, either way - i see it as a dangerous smile. crowley told him in ep2 that he's an angel that goes along with heaven as far as he can, and aziraphale kinda knocked on the door of that at the end of s1 - enough to want nothing to do with them as we enter s2 - but i think this moment, and everything that just happened, just might be his actual tipping point.
After 10 seasons of ru pauls drag race it's time for me to start blogging about it
Eureka def knew during s10 finale she wasn't gonna win and was so so so pissy about it. Kam and asia hammed it up like good capitol citizens but eurka was being dragged through it like a plushy in the mud. Sorry b that's what happens when you're never in the bottom. I do love you tho
FUCK THE VIXEN WITH ALL MY MIGHT. Cameroooooon won the first season and there were 5 black queens s10 yet the odds are against you?? Out there yes but in here???? S1 fat queen goes home first. S2 fat queen doesn't get dress form her size. Fucking willem being fatphobic and ableist. The way country ho had to split drop to try not to be in the bottom. The way ginger minj was told by HER DRAG MOTHER that no one wants to see "fat bubbling out of a corset so don't Even try" and then ru and Santiago both don't shut that down and instead support it. The way ru herself said "nothing tastes as good as skinny feels." This show is DROWNING in fatphobia but sure vixen it's super stacked up against you as a black queen. Sure. Sure.
Fuck you vixen. End season 10 rant
Going from Numb3rs to Eureka is sheer masochism. "What if bargain bin Natsume Yuujinchou but Mad Science (by writers who don't much care about the actual science part)" is. a choice. The show isn't bad, but its core world-building premise is terribly at odds with its creative priorities. Still, the show's main problem this early in S1 is just pacing, a lack of consistent rhythm and energy. Some of that is plotting, some of it is lackluster direction, some of it is wonky editing. If they can just tighten that up, the fun train could easily outweigh the above paragraph. We'll see if later seasons get there.
It’s well documented, Allison. A siesta works. It increases worker satisfaction and productivity, and it is a dying art. Napping is not an art. Well, you haven’t seen me nap. I take it to a whole new level.
ok here we go, dragula and drag race who should win/how someone will win
ok let's do dragula first cuz it airs tonight
so track records
victoria- 3 win, 2 bottoms (but in general, has received high praise on everything but the dnd challenge)
hoso- 2 win, 1 bottoms (they are not into hoso as much as they were last season)
koco- 1 win, 2 bottoms (the boulets love koco and so do the viewers lol)
tbh the last ep it was more like "if ur not the winner, ur in the bottom" so eh but like, it was astrud's time. evah could've won, but like, idk, it wasn't really her season? i love her tho
anyways, i feel like koco had the biggest "glow up" in comparison to her old season. like she placed high her first ep her season but then she faltered over 2 eps and then went home. astrud's crash was wilder than koco's (won first ep, then had a meltdown and was exterminated...i feel bad for her but damn, that's nuts and idk if that has happened on drag race lol...the closest we've had was astina mandela on uk2 but that wasn't as drastic because there was a buffer between the two episodes with her being safe)
anyways....
i feel like koco has been more vocal and her outfits have been versatile and iconic. like, i love her.
hoso should've won s4 tbh. i feel like her storyline was kind of annoying. bcuz of drama (annoying) and like, her looks weren't as nutso as s4 (they in general seemed less versatile)
i feel like victoria...i was excited to see what she brought every week like her looks were nuts but like, idk. i think she is too advanced for dragula and probably should be working practical effects on horror movies but like, eh
koco is that bitch. it'd be nice to have another winner who is a poc and trans (now that i think about it, vander and dahli are poc, and landon is latino, so like...eh. idk. also i think dahli and vander are trans/nonbinary). biqtch is the only cis white gay lol
ok so like, i think im more ok if koco or victoria win. i think hoso should've won s4 but eh. i feel like it makes the most sense w how the season went w koco to win because she has surprised me so much
ok now onto drag race
track records
victoria- 3 top2 placements (1 win). started off meh but dominated after ep 2
silky- 2 top2 placements (1 win), 1 bottom. similar to victoria, started off meh, dominated, and then bottom last ep
rita- 2 top2 placements (1 win), 1 bottom. top2 first ep, top2 last competitive ep, kind of just there. only canadian left lol
rajah- 1 top2 placement, i love her, but like, i don't think she's gonna win? but who knows...idk i feel like she and silky have evolved so much from s11. s11 i loved rajah's looks but like, she had a terrible edit and i did feel bad for her because i feel like something was up w her idk. as6 she could've won ngl. i feel like she should've waited to be on tv but whatever. i love her anyways.
silky also had a great redemption on as6 bcuz her lipsyncs on s11 were rough or tryhard. as6 they were great and she only lost the last one cuz her prop faltered and also eureka's storyline lol
anyways, here's how i think the queens will make it to the finale
victoria- give her either a rock song or a song she can camp up. either campy or sexy tbh. i feel like if they give her a ballad, she could win, but idk. Ultimately, rock song. like something sexy w guitar lol
silky- she will fail if a prop or reveal fails on her. i feel like she is the most versatile lipsyncer out of the bunch cuz she can do everything, but idk. i feel like if there's a malfunction of some sort, she's out.
rajah- she's great w high energy pop numbers and like, older songs (80s). i think if you give her a slower song or like, a weirdly paced song, she's out.
rita- can do camp and gives really good face. her "you oughta know" lipsync is probably my favourite from canada s1. i think she will not do that well to an upbeat pop song that relies more on dance or like, a song that requires you to be sexy, but not, funny sexy
idk i want victoria to win but like, im cool w silky winning as well. i feel like rajah wasn't as emphasized in the season and i also feel like rita was just there so it makes sense for victoria. i love her! as a former lesbian, please win. i want her on all winners lmaooo
Mid S2 Eureka
I don't know if there was writer turnover or what, but the plotting is a lot better on the science front. The eventual explanations and solutions are more technical in ways that shows that the writers are doing research, which informs their plotting choices, and makes the characterizations a lot more solid than before. I can believe that these people are geniuses. This has indeed helped with the "consistent rhythm and energy" aspect I complained about in S1, where the show would kind of faff around until they got to the bargain-bin Natsume Yuujinchou moment they were angling for. This season is a lot more like traditional genre TV, where there's more overt puzzle solving. The other aspect is that the show figured out that they have some real heavy hitters in the acting cast, and that not handing them some juicy drama would be a waste of their talents. This takes the show away from the fluffy twee core of S1, and provides the audience with more long term hooks of emotional investment. Unfortunately, this does give me vibes that the show is on some levels of Carousel of Bullshit, but we'll see. Finally, wowee this show has an unexamined socially conservative worldview. They desperately want to femme up Lupo, the religion episode was laughably bereft of historical context, and the less said about their treatment of autism the better. I can see why shippers latched on to Jack/Stark now, but I do not ship it, and I definitely don't see why shippers insisted on demonizing Allison.
