#saying this as if i dont have a patchwork fic in my google notes rn lol#i just think about agent 8 a lot..#her story is so cool to me#i focking adore stories that explore character development ok#but idk if ppl would care much for it?? its not really shipping just story beats#like lil scenes i have in my head before n after OE#especially with iso padre#and like how she learns to Deal after everything#idk#plus i like thinking about comparing her journey to agent 3 and how they handle shit differently#theyre v alike but agent 3 explodes and agent 8 implodes if that makes any fuckin sense outta context#i also think her relationship with OTH would be so fun to have and play with#anyways#rambles#tbh i would love to make a long comic out of 8's stuff but the way i wanna tell the story would start with Side Order#and unfortunately um i wont have that story until '24 lol

I can't find it in my screenshots so I must have forgotten to capture it but in one interaction Pearl mentions Marina had to learn the language when she arrived on the surface, which confirms that Inklings and Octarians do speak different languages which is cool and neat world building but also
During Octo Expansion did Eight. Did Eight understand anything anyone was saying? Especially Cuttlefish?
Because like you could make the argument the main language of the Deep Sea Metro is Octarian, that'd make sense, so CQ and Iso Padre would have been speaking Octarian, and Marina over the phone may also speak Octarian and translate the chat messages to Octarian for Eight, and maybe she taught Pearl some too for fun or Pearl picked it up to help Marina when she first arrived, and Tartar obviously would be set to Octarian but like
Does Cuttlefish?? Know Octarian?? Fluently enough to RAP in Octarian?? Because he responds to what other characters say, and speaks to everyone else who speak back to him, unlike Eight who never says a word or is even implied to speak which really just leads me to believe they're all speaking Inklinese
So I ask again; Does Eight understand ANYONE during Octo expansion or are they just. Going with it.

There’s a certain kind of story that creates a special feeling I can’t define. When a character takes that step, that leap, that they have been avoiding taking or trying to take or haven’t been able to take. Because in that pivotal moment
they reach for *it*
they reach for *them*
they reach for *the feeling*
they reach for *themself*
To find a reaching back that pulls them forward to begin running. And the running is euphoric, and ecstatic, and everything that the character feared and hoped and could never even dream it could be.
But before they start running there’s a small moment, and it creates such a base feeling in me. It happens even before they take that leap, it’s opening your eyes and seeing what’s there, and seeing the jump you have been afraid of for what it is. It’s when you know they are about to take that first step.
It’s Waking up and being Mizuta in The Deepest of Metros to see the humanity where you couldn’t even see it in yourself before.
In The Sound, another dedf1sh fic, it’s when Iso Padre talks to her and she understands that people can and do care. It’s the little moment where she remembers Callie’s words, where they begin to mean something, when she starts to believe that people can see good in her.
And especially in We Know The Devil (the most lovely visual novel game ever written) it’s Venus pulling her arm off, Neptune being openly honest about her feelings, and then all three together holding hands all together after promising to eachother they can never go back, after Venus promises to stop envying them, after Neptune promises to help them be honest with themselves and eachother, and Jupiter finally admits she’s afraid, and they all bloom and evaporate and flow into their true selves.
Then they feel the new touch.
I treasure that feeling so much.

INCOHERENT SIDE ORDER RAMBLING/SPECULATION YIPPEEEEE ^_^
ok so first and foremost these things seeming, to me, to be a mem cake and possibly a depiction of a sticker iso padre has on his shell, im. a little bit concerned. please dont make iso padre a villain. hes my special guy.
i do however think its worth noting that the thing on the right appears to be a plush octopus. yknow, like. uh.
yknow. the band that released a song using dedf1sh's song naming patterns
anyway. i compared the gameplay to the cybergrind in my other post, and frankly it.. doesnt seem like a stretch to say that might not be too far off? it seems like it relies a lot on enemy hoards attacking you, at least.
THIS is very interesting to me, especially seeing as pearl refers to the player as eight, yet the wording here suggests you can also play as an inkling. im... not sure how that could be handled, i guess we'll just have to see
it also looks like the pearl drone can be upgraded, which is cool :3
the trailer shows a lot of different ink colors, and it seems like it might be connected to the whole palette mechanic? like, your ink starts off white/offwhite but as you install more chips your ink color changes to reflect the color of them.
for example, eight's ink does seem to roughly reflect the chips in their palette shown here, being a reddish-brown with blue highlights.
in addition to the coral imagery we saw in the first trailer, it seems like virtualization is a big theme in this trailer, if that makes sense. specifically a lot of visuals of things materializing from nothing, as well as a lot of matrix-style scrolling numbers
i dunno, it has a sort of "simulation" kinda vibe to it.
ok i joked about this thing having parts that vaguely remind me of tartar but i really dont imagine thats actually the case. honestly, even as someone who really likes tartar, i think it would be kinda lazy to bring him back as a villain.
on an unrelated note, the display on the top left of that image looks like it has a lil torpedo on it. neat!
there is a notable lack of marina in this trailer, which leads me to believe she might be like. missing or something. the way this is phrased makes it sound like pearl prompted acht by like, asking if she's seen marina or something like that.

Operation Atlantis Notes - "Sango" (Chapter 8)
Chapter 8! We're only 2 chapters away from the end of part 1 guys, can you believe it? The end of part 1 is in 2 chapters! Woohoo! I am so happy about this information. The end of part 1! Just two chapters away, oh wo—
So, this chapter was pretty fun to write. I finally feel like I'm starting to hit my stride with these, so hopefully that means I can get them out faster (or not, because Side Order busted into my house and gave me a million plot ideas because of course it did). As you probably know from reading the chapter, this one is another transition (like last chapter... and chapter 6... and chapter 4). Aka, there's a hefty chunk of filler and not much major plot stuff going on, but hey. You need build up for plot points to actually work. And besides, it's pretty fun.
Something I really enjoyed about this chapter compared to the similar ones I've written, though, is the foreshadowing. As you probably could've guessed, there's some big and juicy stuff coming up in Chapter 9. Look forward to that whenever it comes out (which may be a while because again, Side Order busted into my house with a million plot ideas).
Opening poem: I like this one. It's pretty simple, and sweet. The flower metaphor also works well with later in the chapter. Not much to say about this one, it's just about Eight's journey as a whole and not anything specific.
The Interview: Oh look, it's Lila again. Not much to say about this particular scene. As you could've guessed, I really like reusing characters when I can because it gives more depth and dimension to them instead of them only appearing like, in one specific set of circumstances. Giving them different opinions helps too! Anyways, onto something more substantial.
Eight, Three, and the Calamari Inkantation: Oh no, it's my greatest weakness—cute agent 24 scenes! So yeah, I love this scene. Eight and Three are so absurdly, astronomically different from each other, and yet here they are, connecting over a simple song. The symbolism of the Inkantation in general is something I really love, because art really does hold the power to connect people. You guys are all connected to me through this fic, after all! Three singing it isn't only just about giving Eight the rest of the lyrics, it's an expression of vulnerability. Three is self-conscious about her singing, but she sings it anyways. Why? Because she wants to connect with Eight. And at the end of the day, what is connection but not continued moments of mutual vulnerability?
Turfing!: Woot woot, it's Three beating people up time! Fun fact, I wrote part of this scene in my crowded high school cafeteria. You think I would learn from this mistake, but I'm typing this right now in my crowded high school cafeteria. Anyways, I thought incorporating Three's confusion about Splatoon 2 mechanics added a little spice to this scene. Also, I had to reference the orange-blue color palette just because. You know, because it's the classic colors of the first game, and because of Inner Agent 3... I'm sure the latter won't be relevant later :).
Investigating at the Library: These were a sweet couple of scenes to write. I love Iso Padre, especially when he shows his caring side. I imagine his hugs are very pleasant due to having multiple arms. Anyways, it was interesting to write Eight's reaction learning about Inkling-Octarian history. Because she doesn't remember it, she really doesn't empathize with it in the way she should. The way I see it, it's like learning about history that happened before you were born versus what you actually remember. Broad overviews of history are essential to get the context, but you can only understand the emotions through more specific accounts.
The Void of Eight's Past: Okay, this isn't a scene technically, but a paragraph, but I wanted to highlight (it's right at the end of the library scene, and begins with "Eight grabbed it."). And well, that's because my beta really liked it, and looking back on it, I do as well. There's a sort of horror to Eight's amnesia that I've seen crop up in several fics—this idea of not knowing who you are, of your memories, which are everything that makes you you, being stripped from you. I absolutely adore it, and I wanted to explore it here. My beta also told me that's how they feel being mixed sometimes, which I think is pretty cool! I'm not so I didn't necessarily write it with that in mind, but I'm glad they connected with that! Overall, I think it shows how we're more similar than different... that kinda got off topic.
Fates and Daffodils: One of my favorite things about the market scene was inserting my Octarian headcanons, particularly about the Fates. I really like the concept of the three of them and I can't wait to weave their symbolism into the rest of the fic. With Haisho, who represents growth, I felt it fitting to tie her to plants. Flowers in particular are connected to her because their blooms represent the beauty that can come from growth. With that in mind, of course I had to put in some flower symbolism. As mentioned in the fic, daffodils are one of the first flowers of spring—which for Eight, represents the beginning of her healing after the "winter" of losing her memories. What will happen next? Who knows.
Selfie at Central Park: This scene. THIS SCENE!!! I'm gonna be real with you guys, this is one of my favorite scenes of Eight and Three interacting that I've written so far. There's just something so tender and vulnerable about it, but at the same time, withdrawn. It strikes a great balance, I think, of both the vulnerability and awkwardness present in Three and Eight's relationship at this time. They're both starting to see each other in a different life—Three is starting to see Eight as more than a generic enemy of her people (and maybe even a friend shhh), and Eight is realizing that despite how she acts sometimes, Three is ultimately not as scary as Eight thinks them. The selfie, in fact, not only serves as a release of tension, but also a form of symbolism. This is one of the first times Three and Eight truly connect... what will mean in the future?
Mundane (Or Ominous) News?: Not much to say about this scene other than it will be probably be a fun one to reread once chapter 9 comes out. Yeah, it's foreshadowing. What could it mean? Who knows? (I know). I really love playing up the kinda unsettling imagery surrounding Eight's memory loss, so I'm glad I got to put that here.
And there you go, that's chapter 8! As you probably could've guessed, chapter 9 is a big one. It's the penultimate chapter of part 1, after all, so it makes sense. I'm really looking forward to writing it! However... Side Order busted into my house and gave me fic ideas, because of course we can't have nice things. Look, I absolutely love alternate realities that affect people not physically but psychologically (is a Persona fan) okay! Of course I came up with plot ideas. The main one I have in mind is Monochrome Malaise, which is sorta-rewrite that fixes some issues I had with Side Order. It's very fun and I can't wait to get into writing it! However, I also really want to get part 1 of this thing finally fully OUT and I can't do that working on an entirely separate project, so... Yeah. Who knows what'll do. Whatever happens, I'll let you guys know. No matter how long we go between updates, I'll never abandon this fic!

I never thought about Dedf1sh’s dynamic with other characters besides ofc Marina but now I’m thinking you know what sister figure for 8 as a treat as a little treat there’s something about that and I’ll hold onto it for dear life
oh i absolutely agree with this i think acht will become close with eight especially since it seems like she'll be helping eight along the way which means we'll spend a lot of time with her, i think their relationship will develop a bit like eight and iso padre! (btw if they bring him back in side order i will literally cry on the spot i miss that silly dad isopod)
acht being like a big sister to eight 🥺 taking care of her and always fussing over her when she completes missions and is like "did you get hurt? how'd it go?" but at the same time teasing her and making little lighthearted jokes <3 eight comes back from a mission and dedf1sh sees the scores and she's like "lol noob" or "skill issue" and it drives eight insane
I cannot wait for side order someone sedate me and wake me up when it's time

More side order criticism and complaining that you are under no obligation to read
I get that side order was a roguelike which apparently tend to be short? Idk ive never played one before but anyway that still doesnt justify the initial hype, the blatant change in aesthetics and plot (remember the first trailer? And the second trailer i think with the lobby doors looking VERY different and matching what we saw in the concept art trailer) almost last second fnaf security breach style, and the amount of stupid shit that happened throughout most of splatoon 3s lifespan since SUPPOSEDLY the games only gonna be getting updates for like, what, 2 more seasons? And its like wow we waited all this time and went through so much shit for a story thats hardly even a story. Once you unlock everything its just. Prlz grinding for gear to get.
It was fun! It was enjoyable! But it sucked and it wasnt worth all of that. Unfortunately i care a lot about splatoons lore and they didnt really go anywhere with what little lore they did have. They also contradicted themselves multiple times for a net zero lore gain anyway. This is about the whole memories """subplot""", if you can even call it that. It really was just "pearl and marina and also this other random irrelevant character talk to each other while you stand there and stare at them from the background" simulator and its like. Thats it? Thats the story? Thats what i waited through all the bullshit for? And then they make you think that there is more, actually, because they keep leading up to something, and then nothing happens. Like okay what was that for.
The gameplay was quick and easy because thats just my skill level. I didnt find it difficult. If youre good at salmon run then chances are youre good at side order. Theres nothing else to be done about that. Im not gonna play bad on purpose for a chance at a challenge. That isnt fun. I just wish the game was rewarding and to me the lore is the reward but... when you think about it literally at all nothing that marina did all this for shows any proof of having worked. She still has to hack her own vr world to do anything with it. Order, now smollusk, is still very much in control. They dont show you anything memory-related actually changing or being affected. They just say it happened and act like thats all there should be to it. And if they were gonna focus on memories, why did they make this whole thing about how bystanders can accidentally be sucked in and then do literally nothing with that? Why not show an actual change in the actual inkopolis square? Why murch of all characters to get a pallet. Why not involve iso padre, whos in inkopolis square now (im very happy about that), who had also lost his memories and was an established character that we could actually interact with in the previous game? It just doesnt add up. Like sorry that i expected good storytelling, its just this is the same people who made octo expansion and they keep trying to one-up octo expansion and they keep falling flat on their face because they keep thinking the gameplay is what made octo expansion so good when it was also the plot and the lore and the worldbuilding that added so much to it so i thought "this time for sure" especially with everything they showed us in the first trailer.
Again, i know it was all concept art, but surely it wouldnt be fair to show off so much only for the final product to be almost nothing like it? Surely if they werent set on the story then they wouldve waited longer to be realeasing trailers and announcing dlc in the first place? Surely it makes sense to expect what was shown. I dont get why theres some people who think everyone had too high expectations. Like its literally just a matter of if you think about any of it literally at all and actually care about it any way more than barebones surface level stuff literally at all then its natural to expect more.

Meet Ocho the agent 8 of the NSS. That's actually not their real name it was given to them by the NSS. They rather not say anything about their personal info not even their favourite food or colour!
He didn't have much of a choice to join the NSS but hangs out anyway. Little do the group know that Ocho plans on their downfall and the world but that's a secret <3.
They just hate everyone except Iso Padre. Ocho just wants the world to burn or more specifically all living creatures to be wiped out except plants and other things. Will destroy anyone who tries to wipeout the planet. Only he can be the one to do it and only him.
Pretty intelligent and strong for an octoling especially in the military. Was placed in many posts and jobs but none of them really interested him that much since he didn't want to contribute to octarian society. His last job was blue printing weapons and technology as well assembling them.
His tentacles appear white as he lost pigmentation since birth and is sensitive to light.
Doesn't live with anyone except his pet zapfish he stole from the octarians when he ran away post Splatoon 2. Resides at Octo Valley with his own built shack. The agents tried to convince him to live with them at their apartment but failed.
Will act stupidly innocent and sweet to anyone. They just love fooling people and toy with them. Agent 3 and 4 are cautious around them. Pretended they don't know much Inkish so they speak broken Inkish to act cute (it works).
Is banned from Grizzco because of nefarious things. They hacked their database and stole some info as well messed with weapon rotations. They still mess with the rotations sometimes when they feel like it. Their favourite weapon rotation is: sploosh, dynamo, gootuber, undercover brella. Just to be evil.
Agent 3 confessed their crush to Ocho in which they respond with "if only there was someone out there who truly loved you". Agent 3 still hasn't recovered, probably cries at night about it.

Más weas de mi Au de Undertale! Historia Ambos eran hijos de minarcas de diferentes reinos que dichos monarcas fueron bastantes estrictos con ambos y sus hermanos,no toreraban ni el más minimo error debido a que tenian estandares elevados llegando a ser perfeccionistas en todo asi que si pasaba algun error o accidente tendrian un castigo que era bastante inaguantables pero por culpa de eso iso que hubiera una increíble tensión entre padres e hijos y eso empeoro cuando isieron el clásico matrimonio arreglado para concretar una alianza y eligieron entre sus hijos a Asgore y Toriel respectivamente pero obviamente no les iso tanta gracia a ambos en especial a Toriel. Asi que intentaron por todos lo medios en impedir dicho matrimonio pero todos sus esfuerzos fueron en vano y con un pesimo humor de la leche que era bastante evidente se llegaron a conocer y su interacción fue bastante... Escasa y cortante que a duras penas se llegó a hablar de algo lo unico que se pudo hablar fue de un acuerdo de que iban a aceptar el matrimonio y aparentar una "buena" imagen ante todo por el bien de ambos reinos y de ellos mismo ya que no podian salir de esto. Pero no todo era tan malo con el pasar del tiempo conociéndose vieron que era agradable estar con el otro y de a poco se llegaron a enamorar del otro realmente llegaron a ser felices asta que inició a la guerra humano monstruo. Cuando terminó la guerra se sentian tristes, enojados y muy heridos por el ataque a traición que isieron los humanos debido a eso iso que la población de montruos llenos de ira quisieran vengarse y tomar las almas humanas para salir pero otros monstruos que no se dejaron llevar por la ira en especial los reyes calmaron a la multitud furiosa ya que si hacian eso iban a empeorar todo y no iban a permitir que maten a los humanos que estaban con ellos menos por la ayuda que les habian dado. ok so obviously spoilers kjdfhgkjd i have Many Thoughts so i am gonna put everything under a readmore!
i am so eXCITED to walk around splatsvilllee!!!!!!!!! it's so much bigger n feels more Lived In!!!
n i'm guessing the music playing in the first part of the video is what's gonna play in thee tutorial? w how the music builds up and everythingg and it's of the main songg n stuuff just like how it is in the first two games!

the new ink refill sprite thingy is super neat!!! a lil on the fence abt how it loooks but! i like that it shows that u get ink faster when swimming in ink!!
tHE STAGESSSS ARE SO COOOOOOLL i especially lOVE that including hammerhead bridge gives us an explanation as to hOW exactly we're transported to and from splat1 and splat2 stages -w- also it's so cool to see it finished!!! i haven't played splat1 nearly as much as splat2 but i'm happy that that stage is coming back -w- aND FLOUDER HEIGHTS IN THE UPDATE TOO also i lOVE the detail of the NILS statue being in the bg but u can't see it in the eng ver of the direct bc of the name covering it but u can see it in the japanese direct dhkdjfgs

i actually really love the new weapon currency?? it's super clever n i love that you can get weapons early!! dualie squelchers my beloved skjhdfgd n by how the freshness stars look and work i don't think that the freshness goes down when you lose a bunch now like how they did in splat 2! :0 which is really nice -w- when checking the splat website for extra details it looks like there are different kinds of liscences too! :0 bc having splatoon 2 save data grants you 3 gold sheldon liscences so that should meann that the ones on the screen rn are silverr? maybe tin n then there's bronze n silver? idk???

ive gotta say the story and lore, ESPECIALLY octo expansion. oe is splatoons best content imo, alongisde side order, it's sequel. like... im not even sure how to put into words how good i think oe is. ive 1000%'d it and still go back to play some levels for fun or read the chat logs.
the lore it gives on pearl, marina and the octarian army is fucking awesome, and the story of the dlc itself is amazing imo. its not afraid to be dark and just. become horror at some points (especially the escape phases and blender part). on a side note, the gameplay content is also super cool, and every single level (iirc) has dialogue from the others!!!
the sanitized were a cool spin on the regular octarians, and realizing the lore behind them is. haunting <3 very fun to learn about though as a completely unbiased horror fan. oe's horror potential is through the roof and they utilize it well, through music (well, lack of it during some escape phases), scenes and even dialogue alone (happens during another escape phase!).
the whole aesthetic, the new designs for most characters (and the new characters introduced here! iso padre and c.q. ily!!!!), and all of the new maps and their looks are also awesome. i specifically liked the backgrounds for the levels tbh, all the floating objects look so cool. like. i keep saying it but oe is just COOL, its awesome, im in awe at it!!! i love it a lot.
i havent even talked about the music yet. banger soundtrack through and through. a little detail is that the tower jingle is the music for the blender scene. i was like. NO. YOU DID NOT when i realized. (also that the bad ending has color pulse in it! ow! my heart...! very memorable though)
10/10 for me, especially when i look back on it. splatoon at its best. i cannot wait for side order!!!!!!!!!

Some of the things I want in Splatoon 3 in no particular order
- more robust photo mode (more options for poses, the ability to take photos without an amiibo, props and maybe the ability to select ink colors)
- apartments!!!!
- characters with dialogue that have no purpose or story importance (seriously just give me npcs to talk to PLEASE especially ones who aren’t inklings or octolings)
- activities to do in the plaza or whatever it will be called (i can’t think of any examples but just give me something please)
- customizable weapons (i just want my tri-slosher to have a little keychain, that’s all i ask)
- PLEASE BRING BACK ISO-PADRE HE’D BE THE PERFECT ACCESSORIES SHOP OWNER OR JUST ANYTHING I’M BEGGING YOU
- maybe i don’t wanna be a silent protagonist, let me have dialogue too!! i don’t care if all the answers essentially mean the same thing i just want options dammit!!!
- hats and glasses/masks being separate items (with some exceptions like helmets that cover the whole head and stuff)
- more things to spend money on (once you buy all of the gear and weapons you want, you just have thousands of coins that you can’t do anything with, i don’t know what items i’d want exactly but i just want something)
- and finally, please just tell us about octarian culture it’s been almost 6 years and we still know next to nothing

4 and 8 are roomies, 4 bought 8 a plushie of the crab cereal mascot because she thought it was really cute and reminded her of iso padre, u can find it lying around their apartment

8 is terrified of splatfests, the laser lights remind her of the snipers, and the loud booming music reminds her of oe final boss. so 4 brings her up to deca tower where they keep a stache of squid beakons and canned drinks, 4 used to buy drinks for the jellyfish that works maintenance there, Jelgonzo, to let her keep their lil spot on deca tower, they're good friends now, 4 still buys him drinks until now but more because they're friends than as a bribe -w-
8 enjoys the splatfest much more from afar -w- 4 takes note of this n sets up a chair there for 8, there was no chair there before because 4 never really stayed for prolonged periods of time.
in the following splatfests 4 goes w 8 to deca tower n shares a drink before goin off to splatfest turf wars, 4 visits 8 every few matches to sob or gloat about match results, and then to tell 8 stories about their time in inkopolis square. 8 enjoys learnin about everything -w- and often glances over at inkopolis tower, knowing that that's where 3 came from,, Jelgonzo even shows 8 that she can pet the great zapfish! with a thick rubber glove ofc, she vaguely remembers seeing it as a child,, some big concert, which was also where she last saw her big sister :(
8 makes sure to set a squid beakon everytime before leaving, just like 4 showed her, deactivating the signal so no one else notices that they can come up here (idk the science behind it but like, u can't see it on ur map, but u can still jump to it if you know it's there??) so only 4, 8, 3, and Jelgonzo know abt the place -w-
4 brought 3 up here a few times too before she went off w capn to oe, they talk about agent work and how adversely different their experiences were, especially going against octavio (that's me being salty abt splat2 final boss hsgkdjf)
3 also talks to 4 about inkopolis plaza and what 4 calls "retro turf wars"
3 brings 4 out to snapper canal one night with a bag full of weapons, their old (splat1) models, meaning they have their old subs and specials, the two of them mess around in a few 1v1 turf matches with all the weapons, 3 telling 4 about how the different subs and specials work while they do, wholesome sibling moment :')
they continue to do these midnight matches with old weapons every week for the few months they get to before 3 goes off for that scouting mission w capn (oe) 4 gets all confident but loses most of the time (like a 30-60 kind of thing), 3's way more familiar with these weapons after all, no salt on 4's end though -w-

Operation Atlantis Notes - “Brewing Up Friendship” (chapter 5)
chapter 5 chapter cHAPTER 5 CHAPTER 5—Woo, it’s finally out! There are some big leaps forward in this chapter, as Three and Eight are finally starting to bond! Yay! We’ve also got a short scene with Lila in the beginning, (dad) Iso Padre, and more! But, mostly Three and Eight bonding lol. Let’s talk about it! (rest under cut).
Compared to chapter 4, this chapter was relatively easy to write. Writing Three and Eight interacting together is always very fun and very enjoyable, especially now when there’s a language barrier and a lot of awkwardness between them. Neither of them really know how to interact with people normally, nevermind when there’s a language barrier in the way. Because of that, this chapter is full of a lot of really awkward yet really sweet moments that I just love. I had so much fun writing them, and I hope you enjoyed reading them! Anyways, on with the notes.
Opening poem: Okay, I gotta admit—I don’t like this one as much as chapter 4′s. Even after I changed the last two lines during my revision process, it still feels a bit too generic for my tastes. That’s okay, though. These poems aren’t meant to be much other than a nice opener. The second and third lines in my original version were more focused on Three in general and not Eight sensing the connections between, which is the whole theme of the chapter so yeah, I changed it. It’s a little on the nose, but hey, I like it.
Lila: Oh, would you look at that, it’s everyone’s favorite character (sarcastic)! Yeah, this scene is more of a tease for later than anything that has to do with this chapter itself lol. After she didn’t appear at all in chapter 4 I thought I should at least give her a short scene as a brief update if you will. This is probably how she’s going to appear in the story for a while, with a short scene or two here and there but not much of a major focus. She may be a perspective character, but she’s not necessarily a protagonist like Three and Eight. We also get the tiniest of hints at her backstory here... what could her last job have possibly been?
Eight: I LOVED writing Eight this chapter. She’s just so sweet and clueless and ADORABLE I love her so much ASFKLASDJFAKLSDF! After I struggled with her in chapter 4 and earlier, it was nice. The issue with her chapter 4 and earlier, actually, is that she didn’t really want anything. Now, though, she wants to be friends with Three—so she has a reason to act. And act she does. Thanks to her amnesia, Eight really isn’t sure how to interact with people yet, never mind befriend them. The only people she’s really talked to are Iso Padre, Madame Katrina, and Miyo. Only one of those characters is her own age, and all of them are overtly friendly. Three, as we know, is not overtly friendly. She also seems like she doesn’t even want friends. But, as Iso Padre says, those who choose to be solitary often need companionship the most. It might be a challenge to be friends with Three, but it’s a challenge Eight’s willing to accept—after all, they might have more in common than they might think.
Eight’s 100 percent heterosexual activities: Fun fact—my plan for Eight’s feelings towards Three was to have them start out more platonic and have them become romantic later on. Right now, Eight isn’t supposed to have an overt crush like Three is, it’s supposed to be a more “This person is so cool I really wanna be friends with them!” kinda feeling, if you know what I mean. However... uh, Eight, staring at your coworker through a doorway like that is uh, a little gay. Just a little. A tiny bit. I’m okay with it though because gayness is the direction we’re heading and also the platonic/romantic binary is fake. So, yeah. Eight’s feelings regarding Three, and more importantly, what Eight knows about those feelings, will change and grow throughout the rest of Operation Atlantis. Look forward to it.
Iso Padre: My man!!! Iso Padre has officially become my underrated fave. He shows up so rarely in fics if at all and it’s such a shame because I think there’s a lot to do with him. Before this chapter, I struggled to really pin down what I wanted him to act and speak like, but after this chapter, I think I got it. Iso Padre is only middle-aged, but he has a sense of wisdom beyond his years that comes from his experiences. He cares a lot about Eight and the other test subjects who are/were under his care, but he’s also afraid of caring about them in case it hurts too much when he has to let go. This is why he agreed with Kamabo to have his memories taken away, so the pain can be erased too. We all know the real reason though. From what we know in canon, Iso Padre has memory loss but, like Eight, it’s unclear what the source of that memory loss actually is. I chose this interpretation because it’s interesting from a character standpoint and it shows how Kamabo subtly manipulates people into cooperating with them. Iso Padre, of course, is not the first person to be manipulated like this, and unfortunately, he’s far from the last.
The First Interactions: Three and Eight are interacting! Yay!!! The first one from Three’s POV was actually not in my outline, but I decided to add it after I wrote the first few sentences of an Azalea scene that I ended up cutting. Poor Eight is very nervous, as anyone would be, but hey, Miyo is right. Three doesn’t bite. The oven scene was one of my earliest ideas for this chapter, and it’s absolutely adorable. Not only do we get Eight trying to help and almost burning herself due to a lack of knowledge, but we also get Three teaching her how to use oven mitts! Don’t tell Three I said this, but, I think it was pretty cute of her to do that. To Three it’s just doing the right thing, but hey. Maybe there’s more than she thinks underneath her icy exterior ;)
Dork/Dumbass: Okay, okay, guys there is something about insults used affectionately that just sends me. I’m not sure if it’s the playful teasing or “Yeah, you’re an idiot, but I love you anyways” but AAAAAAAAAA. So yeah, when I came up with this idea for Three and Eight I immediately loved it. The best part, I think, is that while “dork” and dumbass are insults, they are kind of technically true. Three, stoicism and hero complex aside, really is kind of an awkward loser. Eight isn’t “dumb” so to speak, but she can be a bit of an airhead sometimes who doesn’t use common sense (see: not using oven mitts). Hence, why they call each other this. And, as you probably could’ve guessed from Three at the end there, it doesn’t end up being used entirely meanly. It becomes quite affectionate, actually.
Three’s Crisis: Three. Three my beloved, gay, absolute disaster of an inkling. We’ll see this a LOT throughout the entire rest of this fic, but, Three’s basically built a rigid set of standards for herself one could call a “hero complex.” This hero complex, among other things, forces her to be calm, stoic, and focused at all times, and it’s in overdrive now that they’re in Atlantis. It’s encouraged by Cuttlefish and it’s also the only way Three knows how to cope with everything. Is it a good way to cope? Hell no! It makes Three repress her emotions to hell and back. Don’t do that kids. And one of the emotions she’s been repressing is, well—Three is lonely. She’s convinced herself that two busy idols and a grandpa are the only people she needs in life because she can’t imagine anyone else taking an interest in her. She can’t imagine anyone else caring about her. But, then there’s have Eight, being nice and doing all these favors for her because... she wants Three to be friends with her? What? It goes against everything Three’s forced herself to believe. Hence, she’s stunned by it lol. But, Three’s on a mission, and she can accept Eight’s offer to be friends based on that. Besides, it’s not like it will last. It’s not like it will mean anything, right? Yeahhh good luck with that THREE.
Tendril ties and friendship: If there’s something I love about writing, it’s symbolism. It gets a reputation for being pretentious, but like— there’s just something unique and interesting about connecting an intangible theme to a tangible object. It doesn’t even have to be complicated. Like, with the tendril ties—it’s not about the tendril ties themselves, it’s about the friendship. Eight first sees them being exchanged between friends, so she immediately associates the two because she’s still learning what friendship is. Hence, her offering one to Three is offering friendship. Woo. For a slightly more complicated interpretation that I just thought of while writing this, I think you can say that the tendril ties represent shared experiences. That’s how friendship is made, after all. And then, Three and Eight tying their tendrils up could show how they’ve become similar as a result of those shared experiences. Just some food for thought. But yeah, I had this idea before I started writing this chapter (kinda like the oven scene), and it’s included here because why not. It also ties (haha, get it, ties) nicely into some stuff with Three and Eight much, MUCH later on. Like post-Operation Atlantis levels of late. So late that I can’t talk about it but hey, I think it’s cool.
So that’s that! I think I’m gonna do what I did for these notes in the future rather than going scene by scene like I did in chapter 4. Chapter 6 will be... a while most likely, I have exams coming up and unfortunately that takes precedence over funny gay cephalopods 😔. Late May/Early June maybe? I dunno. Hopefully progress on this fic will speed up in the summer. No promises though.

One part of one of my dreams was that pearl got a “slug life” tattoo on her knuckles during the splatfest and Marina constantly teases her about it. Also lil’ Judd gets a salmonid mech, he was one of the bosses. Also splatposts finally get colors and size options, and the splatpost place has its own storefront, and is run by Iso Padre. also i can really see them doin a “balanced chaos and order” theme for splat 3! the moral isnt some black and white “chaos/order is bad/good”, its “both are good in moderation”, which is way better than pretending a totally orderly or chaotic world is best. they could do some really cool visual things with it too.. im picturing a super gentrified, plain looking inkopolis hub that you work to steadily return life and culture to, or something. the more progress you make, the more things begin to appear.. street art, performers, stores, music, people hanging out more.. man i love that, its perfect for splatoon
