feeling some kind of emotional about rayleigh and roger flashbacks in wano, with smol shanks and buggy. and later oden and toki and their kids :'(

rayleigh has so much patience for them lmao

no really, these flashbacks said rogerray with kids rights, and rayleigh was the only one with a parenting braincell

and this last thing reminds me how often it's one of the strawhats (cough. zoro) reading luffy the news, mostly about their new bounties

and then this angst.... with the goodbyes, and rayleigh possibly keeping roger's pirate hat after he left.

these flashbacks were so emotional! so good and informative how roger's pirates worked, how oden went with them and their journey to the places we've seen luffy and strawhats travel from beginning of one piece - skypiea and the poneglyph text that oden wrote there for roger. water 7 and meeting young franky!, fishman island and roger and oden hearing that voice but rayleigh not hearing it. that was all so interesting.

it was both so fun and joyful, but also sad and devastating, what it must have been to part in the end, for the rest of the crew (and rayleigh especially.)

Auntie Buggy anon, back again bc you are my soul twin (no romo) and you Get Me

Consider an AU where Buggy comes out relatively early on in life but only really PUBLICALLY transitions later on. She is happy and safe under Roger's wings and so she feels secure enough to ask Crocus questions and look around and talk to Roger, Rayleigh, Shanks - Shanks is the first to know anything. He goes from "wow he's so pretty" to "wow she's so pretty" with barely a hiccup.

The crew is aggressively supportive. Roger especially made damn sure NOBODY would be mean to his daughter ((both bc he's Protective and also bc AAAAAAA HE HAS A DAUGHTER)).

Hormones weren't safe or feasible for her at that age - she was young enough for puberty blockers maybe, but the notion (and supplies) were just Chemicals to her. She could think of far more interesting chemicals to play around with - explosive ones!

Add in her devil fruit and an instinct to split at a prick or slice, she wasn't really good for injections. And she was so wild that the idea of having a routine for medication was laughable. It didn't matter, bc her dad and her crew and her Shanks were there for her, even if some people (cough cough ROGER) got a little too excited when she came out.

(Though in his defense, she DOES look cute in a ballgown. She just didn't need him to buy out the entire boutique. No, really, Captain, stop-!)

When Roger realized the End was here, that he'd done what he Had Wanted To Do, he gave the kids gifts - things for them to carry on with them in lieu of himself. He considered them his children, and so he passed on what he could as smth of an heirloom.

To Shanks, his Hat - his Legacy. Not to be the next Pirate King, not at all, but to live freely, happily, and to embrace the Seas as a sentinel. Shanks was the sky, limitless and without shackles, and Roger would not tie him down to a set path or a pre-written journey. Smth Big was coming, after all, and Shank always loved a good adventure.

To Buggy, his Initial - she was less inclined to battles than Shanks, though by no means was she weak. No, Buggy would do better nurturing the next generation, putting her mind to use and plotting the course to her own treasures. She was the one who he could see as the driving force, the energy, the charisma, the catalyst to the New Beginning. She was a D. in all but blood (and maybe even then that can be argued - their blood types were compatible, and he had definitely donated some to her before.) Where Shanks was the sky, she was the sea - bold, unapologetic, merciful and cruel, dynamic and unflinching even as it carried so many currents, too many to count. But just as the waves calmed when held in hand, she too benefited from security. She would be safe, and she would be his, a last little claim for his baby bug.

((And maybe, Roger, knowing how much she FEELS everything, knew she would love with all she had. Buggy loves love, even if it scares her. He would never be able to clip on her veil or call her a beautiful bride or walk her down an aisle or make sure the man/woman/whoever (or more) she married would be good enough for her. He wouldn't BE there, but he could give her this, a piece of him, his past, his roots, to help her grow in the future, to connect them. It was the best he could do in that moment))

So Buggy comes out early on in her life.

After Roger's execution, the Marines and the press make assumptions when she makes waves, calling her a man; Shanks, Rayleigh, Crocus, anyone who KNEW, they are furious but won't out her, not without her permission - something impossible to get.

So when Buggy eventually DOES come out, even years upon years later, it is to knowing smiles, Seas apart and still so painfully fond.

((And if she ever gets married, Rayleigh may show up with a familiar sash, decades old but lovingly protected. It's worn, soft, and there are spits where the color has been bleached by the sun. Somehow it even still smells faintly of a familiar brand of rum, an old recipe no longer being made, sea salt and caramel and something almost like ozone, an imprint of Haki so familiar it brings tears to blue eyes. And Rayleigh smiles, nods to her silent question.

Roger left many things for his children, but some were for special occasions. Who better to trust with such things than his first mate?))

I have so many emotions about Buggy in GENERAL and the Rogers and trans Buggy and just aaaaaaaaaaaa too many feelingsssss

Using the same reasoning I use for transfem Sanji, fem Buggy makes sense because Roger has SO much girldad energy. He'd be so so supportive. Like, extremely. All the crew would, but he'd just be so proud of his girl and he has no idea how to talk to or treat women but he's excited anyway. And Shanks literally just changes pronouns in his head so damn easily lmfao he just sees Buggy as Buggy he doesn't care if she's a girl or not or whatever, what matters to him is that she's happy. And if she's a girl, to him she's the prettiest girl in the world and he's ready to fight whoever says otherwise.

You didn't need to make the initial thing so damn poetic, do you want me to start crying??? It's so-- Okay. Shut up. It's just too beautiful because people often portray Roger as this guy who ignored Buggy and preferred Shanks when he quite obviously loved both a lot and,, And I am sobbing. Roger not being able to see her getting married but Rayleigh showing up-- I am inside your walls. Stop- I- Okay. I don't want to make this about Shuggy but I am making it about Shuggy and saying that Shanks would be so damn emotional marrying Buggy. Like, he'd see her in a dress and he'd just start sobbing mid-wedding and Buggy would be so tired of him because he's pausing the whole thing only to cry. Fucking sap (she loves him a lot).

The Roger Pirates would be so protective of their girl because, well, that's basically their only girl, lmfao. If somebody dares to disrespect her, they're probably ending up dead or very very wounded. Good luck trying to make fun of her.

I also can't stop thinking about Buggy growing up surrounded by men and feeling a bit too much left out, but then Toki shows up (thanks Oden, we love you bestie), and that kind of changes Buggy's life completely? Trying to think about this before she comes out to the rest of the crew and she's just starting to think about gender and what it means to her. And Toki is right there, being all feminine and gorgeous but strong and extremely smart and Buggy admires her a lot. And she starts spending a lot of time around her and she helps her so much to understand herself,,, Sobbing.

More silly transfem Buggy ideas, Oro Jackson Edition

• Buggy asked a lot of questions as a child, was the reigning CHAMPION of "why". Including being told "you're a boy".

"But why?"

"Because your body is a boy's body, baby blue."

"Why do bodies be different? Why can't I be a girl?"

Roger at that point goes hmmmm, and just shrugs. "Well, you could! The kind of body you have is most common with boys, but I bet some girls have bodies like that too."

• Buggy grew up surrounded by men and fellas and dudes. The interactions with women were sparse, limited, and always temporary. The closest to a recurring feminine presence was Rouge, a few gals on Whitebeard's crew, and eventually Toki.

• when Buggy is about 8, she tells Roger that she wants to be a girl. Roger just ruffles her hair, picks her up to plop on his knee, and says, "Then a girl you are, my little buglet. I don't care if you're a girl, a boy, neither or both - you'll always be mine, and so you'll always be loved. Okay?"

"Okay... thanks, Cap."

• Rayleigh treated it like smth of a flight of fancy. He thought she was doing it because of smth else, so he tried pulling the whole "come to me in a year. If you still wish you were a girl, we'll talk then." It's unintentionally a pretty damaging thing, especially because Rayleigh even refuses to let her grow her hair out. It's during Buggy hissing, screaming, crying to get out of the mandatory hair cuts that Roger learns about it. Shanks went running for him.

• speaking of Shanks, he's the poster child for Ride Or Die. Buggy's shy about shopping but wants a dress? He's coming up with disguises. Buggy wants to present femme on ship but is scared of being made fun of? Shanks is putting on the MOST outlandish outfit he can and has 16842084 plans to make a ruckus. Buggy wants to experiment with her makeup? He's got a PhD in Hype Man Studies, from the University Of Besties.

• Buggy exploring her gender leads to Shanks exploring his own. He's a guy, he's comfortable with that, but he's also among the many who swear by maxi skirts bc those are COMFY holy shit. He's just a dude who sometimes wears a skirt.

• someone once made a side remark about Buggy being on the crew during a fight, they call her an it and thing.

Their head hits the ground just seconds afterwards.

• Whitebeard and Roger have semi-regular fight dates, like playdates but worse, after which the crews hang out and party. The one after Buggy comes out and has gotte some more confidence, she is bouncing around the crews, all big grins and talking to the girls and getting fussed over, or she's playing with the younger crew members and Shanks. He take one look at Buggy, beaming with her tiny little pigtails, her leggings, the mini skirt, blouse, and boots. He opens his mouth.

"We can't steal her, pops."

"But we could...!"

• Toki and Oden half adopt Buggy and Toki is adamant on passing down the Wano Rites to Buggy as well. Momo and Hiyori may be Wano's by blood, but Buggy is Wano's by soul and Toki refuses to let this girl slip through the cracks.

• Roger once heard someone call Buggy weak for being a girl and was ready to step in to handle it when Buggy just... goes feral. She beats the ever loving snot outta the guy, ends it with a "how's THAT for weak, dickbag!!"

He has to wipe away a tear. He's so proud.

• both cabin kids had special nicknames, and the main ones used by Roger for them are:

Shanks as the Red Menace (Menace)

Buggy as Pirate Princess (often just Princess)

((Both of them have those tattooed in their adulthood))

• Rouge meets Buggy and Shanks pre-coming out, greets them post like "hey boys!" Buggy corrects her hesitantly. Rouge is silent for a moment, turns on her heel, leaves, and immediately pops back, going "hey brats!!" Buggy had a moment of terror which then became relief-annoyance-embarassment-gratitude. Shanks just went from 🙂 to 😡 to 😃.

• Teach had a puppy crush on Buggy, which made her ALL KINDS of uncomfortable. She hated him from the start.

• she would put up with it tho on occasion for Missions. Nothing big, but when Rayleigh or someone else annoyed her and the crews were close, she'd run away to Whitebeard's crew and he'd help her gaslight the FUCK out of the other's. Just. Her in his lap, Roger in the fetal position on the deck like "pleeeaaassseee gimme my babbyyyyyyyy-"

Buggy, fighting an evil lil grin, turns to whitebeard like, "pops, is the weird man, okay?"

"I don't know, my girl, but don't mind him - my old friend here is an odd one."

"Okay, papa."

Roger makes a sound like a dying whale.

• Shanks bought Buggy a fancy custom hair piece for her birthday with matching earrings. Buggy then grabbed him by the collar and manhandled him beneath her to put one in his ear. He still wears it to this day. She wears the other one.

• Buggy is quick to crush, slow to LOVE, which was AGONY because Roger, Rayleigh, Gaban, Oden and Bullet were all varying g levels of WILDLY OVER PROTECTIVE. On the one hand - she's growing up 🥰. On the other? She's growing up!!!! 😨

• Bullet was frankly one of the WORST. Buggy was, to him, Baby Sister. Shanks was Baby Brother. Nobody, repeat NOBODY, was good enough for his little siblings. He and Roger were on the same page there. It led to some frankly mortifying yet hilarious hijinks.

• Roger was the type of man to get drunk and become COMPLETELY over the top with the love and affection. Buggy and Shanks were equal opportunity snuggle buddies, against their wishes. Shanks would wriggle to get to the booze himself. Buggy would just go limp and whine.

• the first time Buggy met Iva, she was starry eyed and scared. Roger held her hand the whole time, even as he threatened Ivankov with every single thing he could imagine, all sweet faced and menacing. That was how they found out Buggy's Devil fruit made her immune to piercings as well. She'd have to transition the old fashioned way, and use seastone for injections or sutures.

• Buggy actually cried that day.

• Crocus then requested Iva let him have a sample of their feminizing hormone to try his hand at synthesizing for Buggy. It never worked.

• Buggy goes on to find ways of transitioning that she can actually safely do, and Iva even goes on to reach out to other medical professionals to find options. If one girl couldn't be helped with their Devil fruit, who else was there? Who else needed the extra assistance? It inadvertly starts a wave in the medical community.

do you have headcanons for buggy and shanks?

I’d say most of my headcanons are influenced by fan content and other people’s headcanons. I’ll see a headcanon or take and either be like yeah that’s cool or no that doesn’t seem right to me.

But since you got me thinking, I tried listing some that came to mind! Some of these are just silly or fun headcanons.

Buggy has advanced Observation Haki, and he does have the potential for Conqueror’s Haki, he’s just unaware of it and it only comes out occasionally and unconsciously. It makes him immune to other people’s Conqueror’s Haki as well.

Shanks can’t keep a stable relationship not because he’s a player, but because he’s a pretty shitty romantic partner. Shanks is a great friend and Captain to have, but as a boyfriend he will neglect you and make you do the legwork in the relationship. He needs someone like Buggy to pull him along and force him to pay attention. Buggy is the one who keep things afloat.

They genuinely tried to get over each other and move on after Loguetown. See other people and forget what was lost. But in the end, the first heartbreak between them was too strong, and neither could really get over it. They fucked over each other’s romantic prospects, unaware of what they did.

Shanks has had many offers of people willing to be his partner, to wait for him. But he could never make any promises because the moment Buggy ever came back into his life he’d drop anyone to go back to his old childhood love. 💔

Buggy used to be a pickpocket as a kid, and his obsession with stealing came from how he used to live on the streets.

Shanks used to believe all babies came from treasure chests. (Roger said it as a joke). Shanks believed it and thought he and Buggy could have their own treasure chest baby in the future. One day Rayleigh forced Roger to sit the boys down and drop the truth on them.

Since they were kids, Buggy was good at math and science, meanwhile Shanks barely knows his multiplication tables.

Their tastes are so different they love all the foods the other doesn’t like, so at meals they’re always eating off each other’s plates.

Shanks was closest to Roger, but Buggy was closer to Rayleigh and Scopper.

They we’re each other’s firsts in almost everything. Buggy first put out after the crew separated and that’s why he was especially pissed when Shanks gave up on their dream.

Shanks promised Roger before he died that he’ll take care of Buggy. He feels bad that he wasn’t able to keep his promise.

They collected every single one of each other’s bounty posters over the years. Buggy uses Shanks’ posters as target practice. Shanks keeps Buggy’s posters somewhere private where he can look at it by himself.

Buggy doesn’t give a shit about gender, he dresses how he wants. He’ll wear skirts, stockings, high heels, and of course he loves make up and accessories.

With Shanks down an arm, Buggy will just casually lend him an arm to help him with things. Pouring drinks, opening jars, helping clean and fold laundry, or even just to scratch his back. Buggy does it without thinking, and Shanks thinks it’s the sweetest thing anyone could do for him.

Shanks is obsessed with Buggy’s hair. He’ll run his fingers through it for as long as he can until Buggy shoves him away.

Buggy has drunkenly confessed to Shanks that if he had to choose a third for them, he’d choose Mihawk.

Buggy is a terrific dancer and he’s super flexible. He moves like a trainer acrobat. Shanks can do a jig but he’s not good at graceful dances like Buggy.

Buggy never wanted kids, but Uta is the exception. She’s a great performer like him, and he can teach her all of his showmanship skills. Buggy’s the type to say he hate kids, but once he actually gets one, he becomes wholeheartedly attached.

Shanks is not a frequent bather, meanwhile Buggy has a 15 step skincare, hair, and make up routine he does every morning. Buggy will forcibly drag Shanks to wash up so he doesn’t stink up the place.

Buggy is the breadwinner between the two. He brings in good money through his mercenary and weapons business and in general is good with finances. He supports Shanks who always seems to be barely escaping poverty.

They’ll fight and ‘divorce’ for the fiftieth time, but they’ll always come back to each other in the end. Shanks will re-propose after each breakup, and Buggy accepts it every time.

Yeah no I can't stop thinking about this. I need to get this extremely cursed theory out of my system. Let's just go.

Could Rayleigh and Shakky be Crocodile's parents?

So the thing is, I was gonna post about this like ages ago, but then I canned my original post. Because I realized that based on the timeline we have, for this theory to be true Shakky would've had to become pregnant at age 17 and given birth at 18 while Rayleigh was like 31. And needless to say, that's gross as hell. So yeah, I cancelled that original theory post because of that.

But then I realized that between Oda repeatedly treating 17 year olds as """not children""" in OP (see: Dragon literally saying Luffy isn't a child anymore at age 17), and other shit like how 16 year old Pudding was almost married to 21 year old Sanji

Like shit's creepy as hell. But alas, because Oda is Oda, it would actually fit in-universe. Like the theory is still fucking viable. Because fucking Oda, man.

And god fucking damnit the thought just keeps on haunting me. Because I am unironically curious whether or not this could be a genuine, viable theory. So yeah. I just need to get this theory out of my system. Let's just get it done with, alright

So what kind of started off this theory in my mind was remembering Buggy's off-hand comment/joke about Rayleigh being Luffy's uncle

Because that got me also thinking about some other, vaguely related theories, and like... Like we all know these theories, right;

that Luffy's mom is a Kuja (people speculate that's why Kuma sent him to Amazon Lily, that Luffy had a connection to the island)

that Crocodile has Kuja heritage (the Missing Empress is pretty much debunked but it is a popular, related and vaguely relevant theory too)

that Crocodile is Luffy's other dad

And I could not help but to wonder if these theories could somehow be combined together into one Giga Theory

And the funny thing is, we know that Rayleigh did marry a Kuja Empress, Shakky. Which actually does mean that the four theories could be mashed together. Like sure the other three theories could already be combo'd together but Buggy's theory would somehow really complement the other theories and bring them all together???

Of course, if Crocodad is real and Rayleigh turned out to be Crocodile's dad, then Buggy's comment wouldn't be fully accurate, since Rayleigh would be Luffy's other grandfather, not uncle. But it'd still be funny as hell in its own right, since the two would turn out to be blood-relatives. Like how the fuck was Buggy onto something there. Not to mention, as of now, two of Buggy's predictions in the Summit War Saga have already turned true (him becoming a Shichibukai and then a Yonkou, the only one that hasn't come true yet is him becoming Pirate King)

But indeed, if Shakky and Rayleigh were Crocodile's parents, then that would mean Crocodile would have Kuja heritage, it would mean Luffy's birthing parent was (technically) a Kuja, Buggy's joke would be kind of true and, yeah, Crocodad Real. That would be insane. We got a full fucken bingo over here

But then we have all these details to considder;

We know Shakky quit being the Kuja Empress and a pirate 42 years ago, when she moved to Sabaody and opened her bar. We don't know why she did this move, especially because at this point Rayleigh should've still been adventuring with Roger's crew

At that point, Crocodile would've been 4 years old

Based on Baby Croc's art, he isn't wearing Kuja clothes. If he had been raised in Amazon Lily then surely he would've been wearing their clothes*, but if he moved to Sabaody with Shakky and was raised there, then his get-up would fit in just fine

The trivia books claim Crocodile is a Grand Line native; regardless of if he was raised in Amazon Lily or Sabaody, both would add up

*(To be fair, if Oda had drawn Baby Croc in Kuja Clothes, that would've been a MASSIVE SPOILER to drop in an SBS. And Film Z did go out of its way to NOT include Baby Croc in the credits when all the other Baby Shichibukai were, so like, Baby Croc's art isn't Absolute Lore or anything, it is subject to change)

Indeed, if Shakky had decided to move out of Amazon Lily and went to Sabaody specifically knowing that if Roger's crew ever passed by then that would make sense, since it would mean she'd have an increased chance at seeing her husband again (if only briefly). It would also make sense if she moved out with her child and/or because she had a child, since it'd make it easier for her to ensure her child and the father could maybe get to meet and spend time together, as staying on Amazon Lily would've meant Rayleigh wouldn't have been able to enter the town even if he DID swam all the way there. (Also her options would've been to either leave her child behind or bring the child with her, and if she didn't want the kid to grow up in Amazon Lily for whatever reason then this would've been the perfect opportunity to remove that child from the island)

If Crocodile grew up in Sabaody then it could explain things like Baby Croc's serious expression and how he has a gun; there are dangerous people in Sabaody, the kid would've had to learn to defend himself from a young age (and I'm sure Shakky would've been happy to teach her child how to fight, since the Kuja are fierce warriors and being powerful is beautiful etc). It would also explain Crocodile's racism towards Jinbei, since anti-Fishman racism is a common issue in Sabaody. He would also have grown up in a place where slavery and other shit is a commonly known and seen thing, as well as the crimes of the Tenryuubito. This would explain a lot about his general attitude towards the World Government

Also, if both of Crocodile's parents were pirates, and his dad also happened to literally be on the ship of the Pirate King... Yeah it would explain his career choises. And why he had gone to Roger's execution too, since that would've been not just the Greatest Pirate In The World, but also his father's captain

And if these two were Croc's parents, it could explain his title; he could be "Sir" Crocodile because he is the son of an empress, or it could be a fucked up abbreviation from Silvers (note: it doesn't work like that in Japanese, since "sir" is like "saa" while "silvers" is "shirubaasu", but that's why I said "fucked up abbreviation")

Either way, his fullname would then be Sir Silvers Crocodile

A fitting name for a silver medalist, is it not

I just. I hate how much sense this would make

Also I'll throw this out there; don't want to put too much money on the whole "they look similar" thing due to Oda's same face syndrome, but there is an argument to be made about Oda's fem!Croc looking quite similar to Shakky, while if you squint your eyes, a younger Rayleigh could kinda look a bit like regular Croc (they even have the same haircut, awe), though it's hard to judge since we have so little art of young Rayleigh and old Rayleigh is, well, visibly much older than Crocodile

Really the only things I can think of that COULD debunk the idea are that Crocodile is MUCH TALLER than either Rayleigh or Shakky, and his bloodtype doesn't match (the two are A/AB while Croc is O). And my normal instinct would be like "if they were related then surely these details would add up because Oda is insane", but also. They are minor details. IDK man

Also, Crocodile aside. Shakky and Rayleigh have known each other for a long ass time, and Rayleigh's tendency to sleep around, it is entirely possible the two could have had a child at some point. And that really would explain why Shakky quit being an Empress. What's Roger's pirates' opinion of Buggy?

My headcanon?

Buggy is severely annoying and doesn't mind yelling, screaming, mocking and insulting people. The majority of the crew thinks he's super annoying but won't complain because Buggy is a very good choreboy and also Roger likes him. General dislike though

Rayleigh didn't notice he favored Shanks, he just did. He helped raise Shanks from a baby, they adopted Buggy when he was 8-9. Buggy had already been raising himself and had most of the crew convinced the only thing he needed from them was 3 hots and a cot. Maybe protection from more dangerous enemies but he was brought to all those situations so it didn't count. Buggy wasn't the crew baby, he was a choreboy that was annoying as hell and always looking for an audience. When Shanks did the same thing he was coddled - Aw isnt it sweet how much more responsibility Shanks is taking on to match the choreboy, isnt it cute he's acting all jealous, isn't it adorable he keeps trying to show off all he's learning to the whole crew - to be fair, Shanks didn't do stuff like that nearly as often but he didn't feel the need to fight after Rayleigh told him Buggy was just jealous and vying for attention because he's not used to the crew. Shanks may have mentioned this talk during an argument right after Roger's death and Buggy punched him in the face for only noticing him because of Pity.

Also, Rayleigh was good at handling Roger crazy, which was from an honest place. He didn't like the way Buggy conducted himself and while he accepted it he still tended to drift toward Shanks. Especially after Roger trusted him with his hat, because he knew Shanks was the future and he hoped Shanks would succeed Roger after he died (he just wanted a piece of Roger to stay, wanted to make sure Shanks and Roger's legacy was safe, but he was young and stupid and didn't realize it until he got told by Luffy that Buggy was an east blue pirate the last decade and Rayleigh didn't know. That he hadn't spoken to Buggy since the execution, a boy he thought of as his son)

Shanks didn't like Buggy at first, because Buggy was New but not Good New. One of the first things Buggy ever said to him (or more to Roger but pointing at him) was that Buggy was more useful. That Buggy deserved a place in his home more than Shanks did. And then Shanks started noticing how much a ship really needed to be cleaned and maintained, watching Buggy zip around the deck doing so many things that Shanks had never done in 8 years on the ship. Buggy didn't act like a kid, said he wasn't a kid anymore. So Shanks assumed he was childish, that Buggy was right and he was useless on the ship. So Shanks started doing a few chores here and there - even if Buggy had to redo them the crew still praised him for being very kind and helpful. But then Buggy was mopping and Shanks was mopping the same corner over and over, and Rayleigh told Shanks it looked like he was working hard. Buggy slammed his mop down and stormed out, so Shanks asked why and Rayleigh explained. Buggy wanted attention, he was competing because he thought he couldn't share. And Shanks felt bad for him, so he started actually talking to him. And Buggy was hesitant but then there wasn't anywhere Shanks would go that Buggy wouldn't follow, or anywhere Buggy would go that he wouldn't drag Shanks with him. Eventually Shanks forgot any sort of pity toward Buggy. He only brought it up after Roger died because he was angry, he didn't mean it.

Roger loved Shanks and Buggy equally. He loved to watch Shanks grow up following his footsteps and Buggy grow up unique and interesting in his own right. Roger loved Buggy's little performances, was often the only one that would clap. He knew Buggy had great things in store, but tieing Buggy to a promise as great as the one on his - now Shanks' - straw hat? Terrible idea. Buggy didn't need a promise to follow, he needed an audience to applaud. Roger had full faith his crew would be that audience, watching Buggy grow and get more talented and strong enough to do more than Roger could imagine. He knew Buggy was far too social to ever be alone, he would make a great crew of his own or a great family if he wouldn't be a pirate. Roger wished he could have seen it, been right at the front same as when Buggy was 10 and he was the only one clapping while Buggy juggled swords he most definitely stole from Rayleigh.

✧. There was a smile on his lips, a bright grin in the dark night illuminated by lantern light, as he more tightly tied the bandages around his torso. His expression remained teasing, though softening slightly as he caught their most recent addition to the crew’s eyes.

“ Wahaha, life is pretty strange, ain't it ? ” he chuckled, shaking his head slightly, “ But I suppose not understanding is what's so fascinating about it all. ”

His tone was bright, cheery even. He had enough practice for it to sound — and be — sincere, though from the corner of his eyes he could see those who had been with him the longest exchanging concerned looks. Heh ! They were fools for it, but they were his, so it warmed his heart all the same.

They'd been in the height of battle against a small fleet — nothing particularly significant, but the New World had always held formidable foes — when the storm hit them. Half the crew had been scattered among the enemy; those that had been aboard sinking ships had been retrieved with little issue, with the remaining crew taking charge as he'd gone diving after Buggy and Shanks personally, but there were still a few unaccounted for.

Among them was Rayleigh.

It meant that the missing crew was safe and sound. He had an unshakable faith in his partner. Yet it didn't stop his anxieties from threatening to shake his hands and raise his voice. He hated not knowing where his partner was. Hated not knowing what condition Rayleigh was in; even if the vivire card held tightly in his hands meant everything would be fine, he wanted to see Rayleigh and the rest of his crew now.

So he'd go scouting ahead of the rest by himself. Gaban would lead the rest of the crew and the Oro after they'd taken care of the wounded ( most from the storm ) and the few scratches the Oro had sustained in the parts not made from Adam wood. A selfish decision, perhaps, but his crew would have been more surprised if he’d chosen anything else. They knew his faith in them as he knew theirs.

...Not all of his crew, he reminded himself, looking back down at Buggy. He knew the boys were shaken up, Buggy even more so considering he’d only recently gotten comfortable as one of them. They were worried, he was more certain, especially given how much Rayleigh must've been like a father to them both, ( fondness swelling in him from how much his partner would always mother-hen the two boys ).

Roger would remain strong for them, keeping his smile and voice both steady and light, never faltering. Such was the burden of being captain, and it was one that he would readily accept time and time again. Not forever, no. As much as he might wish he could, he knew life was crueler than that.

“ There'll come a day, Buggy, where it might be a long, long, long time before you'll see me next, ” he spoke gently, going down to a knee to better see the child. Far too young to be aboard a ship in the New World, but Shanks had been even younger and that hadn’t stopped them, “ Wahaha, as your captain, I need to make sure you'll be strong enough for that day ! But rest assured, we've still got plenty of islands to go before it. For now, it'll only be a few days at most before you next see me. There’s no need to be so worried. ”

He reassured, even if he laughed teasingly, jabbing him lightly with his elbow as he stood back up. A whistle caught his attention, signal the dinghy was ready for him. He nodded thankfully, though stuck out his tongue at a comment made about not breaking it — it was hardly his fault they were so fragile !

“ Now, Gaban's in charge for now, so listen to him, and also remember to eat your fruits. Or when I find him, Rayleigh's going to kill me. Gaban ! Make sure they have their fruits ! ”

Roger snickered as his third in command grinned and gave an affirmative. He knelt down again, briefly, to give him a quick side hug, ruffling blue hair as he stood back up. Buggy might still have some getting used to things, but, with time, he would. They would be alright.

“ Have faith in your captain, Buggy, ” he said as he walked away, laughter still in his tone, “ You're a Roger Pirate now — one of mine. That means you're one of a kind. I know you're strength and I have faith in it, so have faith in it as well, my boy. ”

I will be answering both of these from my pov as a writer. As a reader, I will read anything and will give you a 10 star rating no matter the pairing. Always. I found a random ZoroxBuggy knife kink PWP years ago (that is lost forever because I can't remember the name) and it was awesome. I recommend it.

3. Favorite romantic ship with Shanks? And Vivi? Hawkins too? I like to believe that Shanks had a preteen, puppy love romance with Buggy. While Buggy may have always had feelings for Shanks, he never acted on it until they were 13 and had their first pints of ale, got drunk and Shanks noticed how Buggy always looks at him with dreamy eyes. Since then Shanks instigated all their interactions and urged Buggy to open up and explore each other more. When the crew disbanded Shanks grew up and met new people, leaving Buggy behind to pine for him; begrudgingly so. It's one of the reasons why Buggy's so pissed off at Shanks now as adults. Of course Buggy got over it and no longer has feels for Shanks, not in the last decade or so, but getting over him was NOT easy especially when it wasn't even in his agenda to get under him, that was all Shanks' doing.

Shanks is now married to Makino and they have a baby boy together. I haven't seen Film Red yet, as it has not yet been released to the public, but whoever the fuck Uta is, she is not canon and I will be viewing this film as a very expensive fanfiction. Just like HP and the cursed child. She ain't real.

With Vivi, I do enjoy reading her shipped with Ace (there's this one fic I read ages ago that I can't find again, I thought it was Water Sector but alas I was wrong) but in my own writing Ace is with Smoker and only Smoker. Vivi: I don't mind her with Koza, I think she might actually marry him one day in canonverse... maybe. I like the idea of her with Nami, just not sure if i can write that. I mean literally I can, but I don't know if I can write it well. My heart's not in it just yet. I noticed when color coding names, Vivi's partners are all orange. It's fate

Hawkins... This is hard. When HAK (Hawkins/Apoo/Kid) alliance first came up, I immediately shipped him with Apoo. Why? Because rule 34 that's why. Like, I had it aaaall planned out. The meet cute, the debacles, the inconveniences, the second meet cute, all of it. It was like a Hallmark movie where Hawkins was a 30+ year old head strong business person that moved to a small town on a whim in the milk of autumn and met an eccentric local that pissed him off every which way and what, but they had exactly one, count it, ONE thing in common and now they're madly in love. Hawkins and Apoo..... Why did I do this? I don't even remember what it was anymore!! Wano arc came and *spoilers* the bitches were bitches and now I hate them Fuck their love, they can die alone.

That being said, ship Hawkins with his black cat mink crew member Faust because fuck it I don't care anymore. Joey Jordison looking bastard can go to hell (this makes me so sad because I fucking love Joey Jordison so fucking much. RIP #1)

4. Favorite platonic ship with Usopp? And Robin? Usopp is technically in a platonic relationship with everyone accept Kaya. But if we want to get into the could-have-been relationships, first off is Nami. I like to think she fell in love with the nerd some time after Little Garden or Drum but he shot her down and she was hurt for a while but got over it. I can kind of see her in a Shakky/Rayleigh type marriage with Luffy, but that's more like a "I'm your wife so you better listen to me" kinda thing because someone needs to be able to legally control the rubber idiot and also she gets 50% of everything he has so it's also an investment. But this isn't about Nami!!

Second chb is with Sanji. I love seeing SanUso art and they look so great together. In a perfect world I think SanUso could definitely be a strong and healthy thing, but this is One Piece and not a single thing is even remotely healthy about anything.

Third (and fourth) chb is if Usopp had stayed behind on Water 7. Franky joined Luffy and left, leaving Usopp all alone with no one on a completely new island. No friends, no Merry; nothing. He probably would have started working for Iceburg and became Paulie's apprentice. His ship designs would be highly sought for and he more than likely would have invented a lot of stuff of the yagara bulls and he also probably would have a Sogeking statue somewhere like how the dwarves have a Noland bust in Tontatta Kingdom. The entire island would be his friends but the two people that would love him the most, and he would love the most would be Kiwi and Mozu. They're just a couple of years older than him (Kiwi was 20, Mozu 19 when they met SHP), they're Franky's backup dancers/little sisters, they know the ins and outs of the underworld and black market, AND they look like Banchina. HIS MOTHER. He would have followed them around like a lost puppy calling them "Big Sisses Big Sisses". They don't know why he looks that them weird sometimes, why he always makes sure they're comfortable and makes them tea, like, ALWAYS, all the time. TEA. He even has extra blankets out in case they get cold because one, his mom, and two, they wear bikinis everywhere. They might get cold. He'd subconsciously revert back to his 10 year old self talking care of his sickly mom, K&M would more than likely get fed up because A) they're older than him and B) not in their own house you treat them like little kids. It would be very awkward but in the end I think Franky Family would have turned into Usopp Pirates 2.0.

Robin's got a major broship with Zoro.

Like. Yes. Absolutely, Shanks and Buggy have little bits and pieces of ALL their parents, specifically Ray and Roger but No Adult Was Safe From Their Assimilated Found Family, Alright?

Shanks does this one movement when he's showing off and being SILLY about it that he picked up from Oden. Buggy uses chopsticks more easily than forks and spoons, which is mind boggling to those who know her and how clutzy she is.

Crocus was the KING of unexpected and frankly terrifying threats, something Buggy learned like a damned religion. Shanks got his penchant for Gay Uncle On Holiday clothes and patterns from him.

A lot of Shanks' attacks and swordplay was taught to him by Roger and Rayleigh, so his style is a mix of their own with a TWIST that's all him. Buggy wasn't as interested in swordsmanship, but she certainly isn't a novice at it. The forms and katas to her are meditative, and she can't really sit still for normal meditation ((AuDHD Buggy my beloved)) so THIS is her way of grounding. Her knife fighting is also derived from Ray's style, with quick, devasting blow that focus more on backlash damage, Haki and agility.

Buggy and Shanks both have Roger's grin, and when Rayleigh sees them, grown and side by side and beaming and greeting him so warmly, part of him breaks and heals and splinters and oozes love. He of course will not show weakness and instead teases them, as is his love language.

Also consider Cross Guild adopting the Seraphims. Stuff's normal at first until they give the kids some children's books. Cue "what is a dad? What is a mom?" questions. The adults answer them, and the kids simply nod before wandering off again.

Then, a few hours later, Buggy feels a tiny hand tug-tug at her pants. It's two little dark haired tykes, big saffron and violet eyes staring up at her. She blinks. "What's up, munchkins?"

"Mother, we want a snack and fathers are busy."

"Oh. Yeah, sure thing, sweeties, let me ju- WAITWHAT-?!"

Shanks is frothing, seething, crying in the window like a Victorian woman betrayed when he gets word that Buggy and the other two have "sons". He then proposes they have a baby too, to be fair.

Then the kids call him uncle or father twice removed and he is suddenly living his best life wdym he's gonna be the BEST uncle ever, hey kids wanna go harass people-?

Buggy is BEYOND flustered but she's also.... really flattered? Shanks wants a baby? With HER?? Like a real, whole ass baby. Wow. And she already has two sons! Maybe. Her little Birdie seems a tad unphased by the concept of gender anyway, so she won't push. She has two kids. And Shanks wants a third. Wow. Wow~ ♡

And then Crocodile has to go and ruin it by suggesting the kids stay with "auntie Al" for the weekend, while the guys see if they can get that baby idea rolling~

Buggy proceeds to blush so hard she's STEAMING and promptly faints.

I FUCKING LOVE WOMEN TOO!!!!!!!!!!! SCREAMING THIS EVERYWHERE I GO!!!!!!!!!

Both of them having traits of all their parents and role models and keeping them with them forever,, When Rayleigh sees them again he's so fond of their little gestures and :(( He loves them so so much.

Also, the whole thing about Cross Guild adopting the Seraphims is just so so cute. And them calling Buggy 'mom'??????? Crying and sobbing, idk. Cute family that is not dysfunctional but pretty much not normal my beloved.

Honestly, Buggy as a mom just feels so right. But especially as an adoptive mom, you know? She just keeps seeing outcasts and understanding them so well and wanting to take care of them. Tbh, Shanks and Buggy should just,, Find a kid in a treasure chest and keep the baby.

Dear Rin-chan, i have a request for you. It can be a story or just a headcanon. So my idea was, what if Roger had the chance to raise Ace. Roger hadn't this mysterious illness and he heard from the terrible things that happend on Baterilla. When he gets there, Rouge is already dead and he takes Ace with him. Ace grows up on the Oro Jackson with Shanks and Buggy as his older brothers and Rayleigh as the wine uncle. And Roger being a good, loving and a little bit overprotective father. <3

🔥Headcanon🔥

Roger didn't come in time to be with Rouge at her last moment. That's what he regrets the most in his entire life. Need to say that Roger had never ever done one thing which he would regret later. But with Rouge...

Therefore, he swore to himself that he would pour all his heart, his love, and his soul into raising up the son Rouge had left for him. The child is Rouge's incarnation. He is the crystallization of their love. Roger won't let his wife down. He will raise his son to be healthy, happy, and full of pride.

"Your name is Portgas D. Ace, my son! You will take your mother's last name, as a way of expressing gratitude for the great sacrifice and the love she gave you."

With that, he brought Ace back to the Oro Jackson. His son's presence is still in the dark; he can't let the marine know about him just yet.

The Roger crew is more than happy to have their captain's child with them. Especially Rayleigh.

"Oh, look at this little cookie!!! Who's the cutest baby ever? Who's that? Huh? It's youuuuuuu, Ace! You!" Rayleigh often put his face close to baby Ace, cooing and smiling expressively.

And Ace always cackles when Rayleigh's beard touches his skin. His eyes shining and his mouth opens wide, looking so adorable that the whole crew falls in love with him over and over.

"Quit hugging him, you old boozer!" Roger gets jealous easily because somehow Ace seems to like Rayleigh more than him. Ace never lets Roger hold him for too long.

The pirate king tries to take Ace from Rayleigh's hand, but the baby starts weeping and refuses to let go off of his wine uncle. Being rejected by his own son, Roger sulks by his own in the corner of the ship🥺The whole crew then makes fun of him.

Even Shanks and Buggy, who always tease and pinch Ace, are receiving more attention from his son than Roger the pirate king himself!!!

Oh, captain, parenting is hard, yk! 💔

As time goes by, Ace grows up to be a cheerful, energetic child, a little bit mischievous. He enjoys life on the pirate ship and he is eager to learn anything that seems interesting. Rayleigh teaches him how to fight with a sword, Scooper Gaban teaches him how to navigate, and Shanks and Buggy teaches him how to play tricks on others.

Ace knows that his dad is the most notorious pirate in the whole world. He wants to be a great pirate just like Roger in the future, but Ace only admires his father in silence. He never shows it out, because in real life they don't get along very well.

Roger is a little bit overprotective over Ace, while Ace is a rebellious little brat. He wants to do things his own way and always be too reckless during battles, making Roger worry too much. They all end up fighting with each other afterward.

Rayleigh is so used to this scene now he finds that it's amusing to watch those two quarreling. "Both clumsy and hot-headed. Like father like son, huh?"

He will bet with Shanks to see who will win, while Buggy, not helping anything but enjoys adding insult to injury.

But sometimes there's a peaceful moment between those two. It's time when Roger told Ace about his adventures, his fights, the places he discovered, the people he had met. The stories enthrall Ace so much; the freckled boy listens attentively with his round eyes wide open.

"One day, I will set sail on my own ship, find my own comrades, seek out new lands, and discover the world with my own eyes!" Ace told Roger one day, after listening to the story about Skypie.

"Why, don't you want to be the pirate king like me?" Roger strongly believes that his son has the potential to lead the new era that soon comes in the future.

Ace thinks about it. Then he says, "I aim to be a top pirate, yes, but..." He says his reason and Rogers laughs. The old father feels proud from the bottom of his heart. His son has really grown up to be a healthy, happy, and full of pride young man.

He pats Ace's head and this time, Ace doesn't shoo him away. Roger said, warmly:

"Live the way you want, son! It's your life, your freedom. No matter which path you choose, I'm your father and I'll always be proud of you. Live a life without regret, Ace."

And those words of Roger remain forever in Ace's heart. Live a life of no regrets...

I also have the idea for a whole story, a whole new story with a different plot from the headcanon T-T T-T T-T but somehow I just can't write it down, there's something blocking between my thoughts and the right words I want to write... I'm sorry there's only a headcanon for you. If you want to read a whole story too, maybe I will write it after finishing all of my final exams? episode 966 - one piece

Looks as if the anime and chapters are in direct correlation at the moment. You know what that means, if it keeps it up? Only eight more weeks until we get to see this animated! (Below).

Okay, okay, that’s two months away...but even so.

AND I keep thinking I’ll zone out of Oden’s backstory. Like, I think it’s necessary and I also think it’s interesting, and once I’m in the zone I really enjoy it, particularly for the insights to the Whitebeard and Roger pirates (and the minks, and Shanks and Buggy). But it’s like those chapters of a book that take a while to settle into, so you resist it, but you’re glad once you have.

Apparently this is filler, but Marco races into battle (or flies). He leads the Whitebeards against Roger’s crew and Rayleigh stops him with a finger. Lol. Love it.

Rayleigh is super cool in this of course, not to mention Scopper Gaban.

And I want Blackbeard’s backstory. The screen caps won’t do it justice, but he flinches when he overhears Buggy wondering if he is a monster because myth is that he doesn’t sleep. The eye-catchers also have Luffy and Teach (Blackbeard) eating Cherry Pie at Mock Town, so yeah. Obviously he’s a major antagonist, but I’m looking forward to seeing when and if any of the foreshadowing slots in.

The anime is worth watching just to get a huge dose of child Shanks and Buggy, and then the slightly older Marco and Teach, and also Nekomamushi and Inuarashi, as well as all the crews.

Shanks and Buggy are pretty relaxed in this eye-catcher above (or Buggy is, haha), but in the filler picture below they’re sulking because more attention is being given to Momonosuke and Hyori than them.

Roger also mentions that it’s been a long time since he’s held a baby, with Rayleigh saying it reminded him of the old days, just before cutting to the shot below, so it seems to imply these two were the babies held in the past? I’m not hugely knowledgeable about Shanks and Buggy’s pasts.

Anyway, tons in it to satisfy longterm fans I think, and especially those thirsty for knowledge and appearance of those two crews. Of course there was a lot of focus on Roger, Whitebeard and Oden (they fight by seeing who can laugh the longest. Not quite. But. AND Whitebeard goes into a major sulk over losing Oden and the Minks). It doesn’t seem like you can leave that crew, even if you want to (though not true, as we saw at Marineford).

Marco is at the forefront in so many scenes, cementing his importance in the present act. As said, though, lots of Scopper Gaban too. Wonder if we’ll see him again.

Ooh, and I just checked out the manga. It doesn’t state that this town is Mock Town (where Luffy met Blackbeard for the first time), and the scene of Oden stealing food is an off-screened single panel, so that bit of extra information is also good.

Ah, I see, they haven’t adapted the last two pages. That’s fair. The filler sections of this adaptation was good.

Izou definitely looks better in the manga though. Seems they kept some of the pretty animation for Shanks and Buggy (and probably the fight scene), and the rest is of the quality above. Not to worry. Better not screw the boys up when it comes time to adapt chapter 974 though!

Okay but Roger and Rayleigh being like "oh it's been a while since we held babies" makes me so curious. And then I suddenly remembered that Shanks and Buggy are part of Roger's crew and seem to be the only little kids there. Look I may be overthinking what could have been a simple throwaway line and this is totally not what Oda was getting at, but I'm suddenly being struck with the comedic cuteness that is the idea of Roger and Rayleigh having raised Shanks and Buggy since the pair were babies.

omg yeah i was thinking about that too! the idea of roger and rayleigh raising shanks and buggy sounds so funny/adorable. i’m so curious about their backstory and how these two children ended up on roger’s crew, especially with the line about how they behave like veterans which makes it sound like they’ve been there a while (or maybe they were just trying to act tough in front of whitebeard’s crew idk lol).

also, if the babies they were referring to weren’t shanks and buggy, then whose babies were roger and rayleigh holding??

Charky! My brain came up with a crack thought about Rosé’s heritage I need to inflict on you to see how it pans out. I’m pretty sure the timeline would be wrong so that’s why I’m sharing this with you for feedback

Rosé is surprised when the Dark King grabs her shoulder, keeping her from closely following the others. Her animal side sensed no danger though, so she allowed it. “Is something wrong?” She asked.

“No.” He assured her. “It’s just uh… you’re from CP9 right?”

Rosé nodded. “I’m guessing you’re from that island of orphans then?” He asked.

“Yes of course.” Rosé nodded. “I was soon moved to Enies Lobby as a special project though.”

“Right.” Rayleigh nodded. “Do you… do you have any knowledge about your parents? Or uh, your mom at least?”

Rosé paused for a moment, taking the chance to really look at Rayleigh. She remembered how Shakky had paused at seeing her, looking taken aback and kept shooting her odd glances. And Rayleigh’s eyes… well she had seen those eyes look back at her in the mirror everytime she looked.

“I was told that my mother was a dangerous criminal who was executed for what she did.” Rosé said slowly. “But I was spared for being a baby and because the government thought they could use me…”

Rayleigh gave her a pained look. “That’s all you know?”

“yes.” Rosé replied. “But if you have more to tell me, I’d love to hear about it… Grandfather.”

Semantics first:

- how old is Rose? I'm just gonna put 18 in here for my numbers

- Rayleigh's 78 - 18 = 60, 60 could be divided by 2 very easily but Also needs to be at least a 45-15 or 15-45 split, probably closer to 30-30, but there's a good chance Rayleigh met Link B (Shakky? Or maybe someone else? Shakky's 14 years younger than Rayleigh so rules out Rayleigh being 15-30 when he had kids but if he was 45 and his kid had a kid at 15-- I'm rambling) Rayleigh met [B] Link to Rose while he was traveling with the crew. Genetic testing is near impossible so Rayleigh and B Link had to be close enough to eachother for to their daughter (A Link) to be connected to her parents somehow from an outside perspective, or B Link up and left and Rayleigh was solely responsible for A Link, either way the crew Knew A Link well, at least some of them

- How does Rose know? Does she actually know her mother, or does she just have a vague enough understanding she can link it to Rayleigh?

- While A Link could have been passed off as another choreboy, there's still a good chance she could have been known as the Dark King's Daughter, especially if Link B was traveling with them. Did A Link evade that or did it catch up to her and that's why she sent Rose away? If so, why didn't A Link trust her father and step-mom/bio-mom with Rose? Or even Shanks or Buggy (she would have been between their age and 10 years older, right?) since they would have been early 20s and most things are better than a risk of government slavery. Did A Link have a choice?

- When did Rose learn her parentage? Was she still CP9 when she learned? If so - is Lucci a liability for maybe also knowing?

- How does Rayleigh know Rose is his granddaughter but was only guessing she was from orphan Island? Any heirlooms that wouldn't be taken by CP9? Or maybe a rare interited trait mixed with a resemblance to A Link?

SEMANTICS OVER! Longer than I meant but if you wanted concise you wouldn't have gone to me!

- MORE SIBLINGS FOR THE SHANKS & BUGGY DUO I'M FROTHING AT THE MOUTH

- If Rose's mom was 10~ years older than Shanks and Buggy there's a good chance she could have known Crocodile when he was on the Whitebeards and been near the same age as him. Possible friendship there giving Rose a cool mob boss uncle and Crocodile another reason to have been so strangely protective of Luffy, Crossette and Ace in Marineford

- Rayleigh being super nice to Crossette over the two years because he wants to make a good impression on the granddaughter-in-law ✨✨✨

- Rose only learns she needs glasses from Rayleigh because it's harder to tell when 80% of the crew needs glasses, she's as blind as her grandfather

- is Rose blonde???? (I'll be honest I always pictured her hair light orange-pink but that's because that's Rose Wine colour--)

- Crossette got the son of Gol D. Roger, the daughter of Silvers Rayleigh and the son of the Revolutionary Dragon to love her. Whose next? Uta? Katakuri? Yamato? Will she find if Teach has a child and adopt them into her family too? She can't be stopped

i cannot stop thinking about baby ace and the roger pirates so i’m laying my thoughts out to everyone and dragging you all down with me

i want to know why roger left ace to garp. did he know rouge wasn’t going to survive having him? why did they decide to have ace if he knew neither of them were going to make it? and why leave ace to garp and not to like... one of his actual crew mates?

it’s implied in one of the recent chapters that rayleigh and him raised shanks and buggy as babies, so it’s not like he has any doubts his friends would be capable.

did they just not want to? they seem just as close as the strawhats, so i can’t imagine they’d just leave their captain’s kid high and dry like that. especially not a kid this fucking vulnerable.

which makes me wonder... did he not even tell them? if not, why wouldn’t he? roger says once that his son would be the next pirate king, and rayleigh tells him “you don’t have a son!” so it’s very possible they just don’t know. did roger not want them to be, like... stuck with a piece of him or something? think it’d interfere with their ability to move on? rayleigh cries when he gets just a little bit of his captain back by seeing Luffy off at sabaody. did roger just not know how much he meant to them or something? or did he just like... forget to mention it?

if he didn’t tell the crew, did they... know about rouge? it seems like she didn’t sail with them or anything, so they might not have. i wonder how it felt, then, to one day open the paper and find out your captain had a son, and he’s dead before you even had a chance to know who he was. after all, his death was reported in the same paper as his heritage. if the rest of the crew didn’t know about ace, they would never learn until it was too late.

if the crew did know about roger and rouge, i wonder if any of them every thought to seek out “portgas d ace” when his name became famous. they’d have to know who he is, right? did he ever get to meet any of his father’s crew?

or maybe ace hated them, just like he hated roger. i wonder if maybe he avoided as much of roger’s crew as he could (except shanks, of course, since he was Luffy’s friend before anything else, and he had to thank the man). i wonder what sitting down and talking to someone who loved roger more than anything could have done for ace’s self worth. i feel like even just an hour over drinks with rayleigh could have changed ace’s life. i can’t imagine a primary source on who his father really was would be anything but life changing. or maybe that’s why ace might have avoided them.

but that leads me back to my original question: why did roger leave ace with garp instead of one of his crew mates? or, i guess, what would have happened if he didn’t? ace hated himself up until moments before he died. would being raised by, say, rayleigh, have answered his ultimate question? would he have known it was good he was born if he was raised by someone who loved his father enough to love him, too? would ace have even thought of his question at all?
