ctubbo characterization master post

Ok so I was thinking abt ctubbo and characterization and how a lot of the fandom doesn't rlly have a solid grip on him (no shade its not on here mainly) whether it's bcs of lack of interest or exaggeration and like fandom lense or whatever (he tends to kinda get fucked ovr in ensemble fics) and then I thought well we talk abt scary nuke violence tubbo vs uwu beeboy or whatever but I was thinking there's definitely more to it then that bcs sometimes when I'm writing even I'm super insecure abt my portrayl of ctubbo so ig this post is kind of like a breakdown using some of my fav ctubbo things for me that could b useful 4 others as well

(This might b a little unorganized and like unprofessional-!!i will misspell and abbreviate a lot srry!!-but it's tumblr so who cares just don't expect too much cohesiveness I am writing this to get my thoughts out mostly

[DISCLAIMER!! most of this is my personal interpretation of ctubbo seeing as that's what ctubbo is mostly, what u interpret him as, but also its a bunch of notes and common traits that I got from awesome ctubbo fans and I'm mainly making it 2 help me :) < I'm not linking canon examples and evidence bcs I'm lazy and fuck that alsooo I'll mainly b focusing on ctubbo individually and not his relationships and such

ctubbos humor

I'm gnna start w ctubbos humor and irony and that kinda stuff. So like w ctubbo and characterization a lot of times ppl will take traits or speaking habits from the streamer and apply them to the character which is common in the general mcyt fandom but w ctubbo it's esp common bcs of cctubbos whole "ctubbo is just me but if I was put into certain situations" which we've kinda moved past seeing as that thought process worked better in the earlier seasons before ctubbo was morw cctubbo and less a result of his circumstances, his experiences, and ctubblings drawing lines between things << this isn't my main focus rn tho there is a huge distinction between cc and ctubbo

To get to the point ctubbo is a pretty serious dude but also he's not, there's a fun middle ground that I like where ctubbos humor has definitely become darker as he's aged bcs of his circumstances. One of the best examples I can thing of is this line from elegy in eleven bars by ssootsprite

^^this definitely portrays ctubbos humor well imo, the dark irony and humor that often stems from taht fact that ctubbo will sometimes jsut do what he finds funny but usually those take form on a smaller scale if we want an actual cohesive character

ctubbo swiss army knife

Ive made a handful of posts abt this but one bit abt ctubbo that is often missed is the fact that he's been dehumanized throughout his story which led to him internalizing it not seeing himself as a person entirely, more like a tool for others or a means to an end. I love love dsmp au fics but something some of them miss out on is ctubbos urge to serve others which stems into two branches that I call safety and self

When in a dangerous situation or around someone that he's deemed dangerous ctubbo will instinctively shift to politeness and servitude occasionally its his follower instinct<<this is bcs of manburg specifically cschlatt though it was really instilled to him by cdream after the whitehouse fight (where he called him a follower) and the disc saga finale (called him a sidekick). This happens sometimes in canon but enough times for it to be a full blown like, thing my fav explanation of this is augustus evergreen by thatweirdguyinthebushes on ao3

The second facet "self" is more deep, it's ctubbos actual beliefs, that he's not worth anything if he's not doing something or his tendency to work as a means of avoiding emotion. He doesn't see himself as a person or a child, often forcing himself into the roll of an adult to meet a goal of serving others (his nlm presidency) < this also comes from Manburg but can also be tied to my fav quote "a good kid and a better spy" (not gnna go too into ctubbos spy mentality bcs that's a whole other essay LOL) after being repeatedly handed jobs that are not meant for kids, responsibities much larger than him, he internalized all of it and tied it to his self worth and how he sees himself

by @/yellogazello which gets the point across by whacking u ovr the head w emotion and some ctubbo aesthetics that rlly do well 4 his character -> also I made 2 web weaves on all ^^^this if ur interested also I've got a bunch of analysis on it in #smpanalysis bcs it's my fave ctubbo is kind of naturally a follower but this isn't always a complete negative (see: the way he comfortably follows Tommy or the way he and Tommy willingly followed Wilbur- it isn't always an 100% bad thing but over the course of his life it's kind of been tainted

ctubbo logic brain

Tubbo "logic braining" something =/= him thinking logically it's him and his fucked up process that filters things through his weird logic that would make any stable person worried, his brain does flips to rationalize his own and others thought processes to make them make sense to him, it's the same kind of thinking that is responsible for his "safe people" its the same kind of thinking that makes him blame himself for things that were clearly out of his control. While ctubbo is often seen as a more "brain lead" character, most, hell, all of his core motivations are emotional >> the need to protect his loved ones, his people, the innocent, to live upto expectations, and so on. This ties into his protective sort of paranoid nature that he displays toward his loved ones that is sometimes misconstrued as controlling

A lot of ^^^^^ this can be tied to ctubbos relationship w attachments and belongings which is one of the dsmps overall themes, ctubbos logic being that attachment is irrational and only leads to being hurt but forming attachments and getting hurt against his better judgment

ctubbo and the nukes

One thing that is often lost in surface level depictions of ctubbo is the nuke plot. This is often used to characterize ctubbo as violent or immoral (which I won't deny he can be at times) but one key detail about ctubbos nukes is that they were always a last resort, no matter what he threatened or said he never ever wanted to use them, constantly emphasizing how crazy it was that he had access to so much power and how terrified he was of misusing it in the missing nuke stream w jack. ctubbo has always always been a peaceseeking character. Like w most things abt ctubbo there's a nice middle ground, though tubbo leans less towards chaotic and more towards solemn, esp when at an emotional low

The nukes hold a lot of symbolism for ctubbo and are often presented as an antithesis to the bee symbolism used for him > the nukes being him becoming more violent and straying from what is deemed moral as a defense mechanism, becoming worse than your enemies (stay soft by mitski etc) and the bees representing his innocence and the loss of it (a common theme w ctubbo and on the dsmp in general) tying to the more nature-y imagery that become professional/political in late s1 & 2 which then became technologybased and cold in s3 & 4

ctubbos emotional intelligence

Another thing that a lot of people miss about ctubbo is that he has very veryy little emotional intelligence. Post-Michael kidnapping and arguably pre-Michael kidnapping there was this (mildly popular) notion that ctubbo was together emotionally to the point where there were a lot of misunderstandings surrounding his actions but the thing is he isn't. When it comes to himself ctubbo is aware that he is effected by his trauma (he will often make references to it) but he never does anything about it, he views it as irritational and tends to compartmentalize and repress his emotions which often leads to him hurting himself and others. ctubbos responses to emotion range from pure apathy to overwhelming him to the point of tears (which we've seen once w the anniversary stream) He's also not very good with recognizing the emotions of others, while he is good at reading people and their intentions (mainly people he has close relationships with) he is generally extremely blunt sometimes to the point of hurting other people's feelings on accident which he usually apologizes for immediately afterwards. In fact, ctubbos bluntness and politeness are a fun contrast to experiment with if you're interested

With all of ^^^this stuff dissonance by shrugofgod does a rlly good job of this I'm just putting a small snippet but the entire fic is incredible w sm details and ctubbo intricacies it's so good

ctubbo survival and tragedy

ctubbo has survived a lot especially in comparison to other characters he is close to << that was badly worded, what I mean is a lot of the people in ctubbos life have died/were dead/are dead and he just isn't. Tragedy is a large part of ctubbo, if something is going right for him it will inevitably go wrong, things like stability don't exist for him, he doesn't trust it and why should he? His paranoia has consistently been proven to be justified over and over again. Dramatic irony is such a huge part of him, he's experienced so much and has survived through so much but its like he can't die and he has to live everytime.

Most of these things can be heavily elaborated on (nature of the dsmp is to have incredible fleshed out characters that feel human and awesome and that make u crazy) but this is kinda a summary and I have others posts that kind of do that I just wanted to put all this in one place

what's up with misfits?

ok that is a kind of long answer

if you’re asking about today specifically, misfits released that they hired like 8-ish people, all of which were mcyt stan accounts (I would add the pic of the tweet but it’s been deleted since they were getting harassed) which led to a lot of talk about cc and fan divides and the need for separation of fans spaces. plus if you ask me it’s just really weird of a professional organization to be hiring a bunch of stan accounts, esp since I’ve heard some of them are minors (not sure about that one and can’t remember all the usernames to check for myself, sorry!)

if you wanna know what’s bad about misfits like in general, then it’s a combination of general mistrust towards creator orgs (they don’t have a great history), they have a lot of nft stuff going on (x) (x) and here’s a thread about why the people they partnered with are bad, the fact that they may have dropped nathan smoke to make room for more “big creators” (this is an assumption based on this tweet from nathan and some things he liked on twitter at the time). also once ben spoont entered a fan gc on twitter and decided to address controversy there (x) which is not normal at all. honestly i’m probably missing stuff but they’re just not great

i dont intend to say this like im putting myself down but when im burnt out or in an extended art block i do often look to what i have done in the past- maybe as a "was i doing something back then that i miss doing now?"

my art has shifted a lot over the years. im sure anyone whos followed for a long time would say so. ive gone through phases and styles and vibes of many kinds and theyre all very different. and theyre all times that sometimes i look back and think "maybe i should do that again". of course i need to avoid getting overwhelmed with the "i want to do this- no this- maybe that-".

But the hardest "change" in my art was probably a year ago when all that stuff happened with wcrp. which i wont reiterate- but it was forced. that was the big thing. and i think its whats hurt now that i have this burn out settling and i am looking at old art. I did hit a burn out last year after wcrp when i quickly dove into other fandoms like half life- i did what i often did, where i overexerted myself from hype and quickly burned out. but then i picked up mcyt which has been going strong for a year after leaving it for many years back.

when i look at whats changed about my art from then to now, i notice one big things, which i felt was obvious (and i deliberately did this)- i was going into that fandom simple. first it was a lot of lineart, no color. then i started adding some one flat color to bodies and sometimes minor effects done with the help of gradient maps. then i started using thicker brushes where i could, knocking out the need for clean details. then i started using the binary pen. i had a few detailed drawings in between but really so much of what i have done has been so simple.

and as i said, i did this on purpose. i got into this right after half life and i knew i was burnt out but i really wanted to draw anyways, so my plan was to do it like that! i wasnt very good with humans either so i didnt want to focus too hard on it anyways. and i certainly have liked this method. i enjoyed finding a way to draw that IS simple and doesnt put a lot of strain on me... it helps me no longer be a perfectionist as much as i used to

but at the same time its taken away some aspects that i liked about my art from 2020-early 2022. which was that i was so much more detailed than ever. my warriors art was very detailed, the designs were intricate, i drew a number of scenes just for the rps i loved, etc. i experimented quite a bit with coloring and shading and i still love a number of looks i tried, and i keep wanting that back. (ex 1, ex 2, ex 3)

interestingly i actually started to simplify that style too, esp as i got deeper into my own rp, and i know full well it was because i was also getting tired. used a lasso tool for markings, used less layers, dropped the texture and using a thin pen brush to make sketchier lines. (from this -> to this)

THE problem with these notes about simplifying stuff is that like. i rush things. i rush them SO much. and this has always been my biggest struggle, and what leads to annoyance with my current art and also to burn out. Burn out, caused by how much i am drawing, because im fast. drawing fast because i want to make content for the fandom i am focused on. art block because im not happy with my art, but im also too impatient to slow down and take my time and REALLY remember and realize what it is i want out of my art!

its a never ending cycle and sorry we're at the end of the post because i dont have a solution lol

omg they have a knitting pack??? that’s so cool I knit irl too I’m excited to check that one out! and as for CC I used to watch a lot of sims YouTube content back in the day (shout out to thesimsupply, seeing him and zeus and vixella in mcc blew my mind LOL collision of worlds I used to be so into that whole group before I made my way back to mcyt) and some had some super cool CC especially back before a lot of packs had come out but it always seemed so overwhelming to search through all those links and find the good stuff and download them all! maybe I’m just not good at having a lot of options in general LOL

yes the knitting pack is lovely whether you wanna cheat all the items or you wanna knit every one and unlock them its just a very cool hobby to get your sims to do (esp kid sims since they cant learn all skills!).

honestly as someone who is Not in that fandom i'm way more willing to engage /w your d.smp-and-related AUs than i'm willing to engage in the actual smp itself (mostly bc its coming from one source i can read easily (you) than from what feels like 20 different livestreams a day ^^; )

honestly its so friggin hard to even get into bc theres always So Much happening and its hard to tell what streams to prioritize, and if youre not able to watch streams at all youre fucked? i rely p heavily on my friends to fill me in on stuff i miss, esp bc i cant follow the current “main plot” bc its gotten super triggering for me Again so im just. off in a corner with my aus thinking real hard abt tales

like, dreamout was literally. it came about from me watching the 2 dreamon hunter eps fundy put on yt, getting really into the lore, tying it onto a webcomic i like thats no longer available + haha also what if yogscast, and then just. running with it. with literally no idea what i was doing outside of things i was learning secondhand. and at this point it is SUPER divorced from canon and i love talking abt it, but i also worry bc for anyone who IS in the fandom i have to go into this huge explanation of “yeah so its kinda a crossover, everything goes off the rails in s1 and etc etc”

aaaand spau is an au for a different mcyt a friend of mine started and then i noticed no one had a shadow for karl, right as i was getting heavy into tales, so i kinda went apeshit in my corner Again and now i will kill for honk

but also in general i guess some of it is that i Do explain stuff (sometimes even overexplain dhflxkdfhgf) whereas the fandom is kinda. impenetrable. otherwise. bc you Need to know so much stuff and ppl kinda assume you Do know those things, which is what made it hard for me to get a foot in in the first place

exactly like this sounds stupid but when i was more involved with the fandom i kinda felt pressured to watch and enjoy every stream from the friend group to “support” them or whatever when tbh i just like a few streamers and not every stream/video will be for me! it’s a lot more manageable to catch up on content i’ve missed as well when i’m only following people interested in the same narrow list of things i am. also i definitely wouldn’t say i beloved myself to be friends with any of them or thought that they liked me personally, but when you hear someone talk about how they work to achieve their success you do feel more invested to consume their content not only because you enjoy it, but even primarily because you want to support them which i don’t think is healthy! that, plus the fact i wanted to be distracted, made me not want to distance myself from fandom at first. but good luck to you 👍🏻 i definitely think there’s a good balance you get of fandom updating you on stuff without being overwhelming

tbh i dont think it sounds that stupid?? esp when u consider that mcyt is one of the most active fandoms rn + the general ‘all or nothing’ mindset of the internet as a whole + youre right w the support thing, esp abt Big streamers/ccs, theyre gonna be. completely fine w/o u ++ thank u!

(20)what do you think youve improved on the most over the past year my Primary Goal of 2021 was to improve at drawing furries (...specifically Large Piggies :D ), and i def think ive made progress :) not a lot but its there! made some other Small general improvements too. looked at a LOT of incredible stuff this year in the mcyt fandom, its jogged my brain a bit :)

(21)what do you want to work on the most next

continue learning to draw furries/monsters for sure, esp angles of the head and expressions!!! (still stumped in that area of expertise, whew is it hard!!!) but also i miss how Clean my (traditional) art sometimes was in the past, so i might venture more into Technique if the energy strikes me this upcoming year :)

(24)what do you like most about your art style

I think my art is fairly dynamic when i want it to be and characters are Unique and Moderately Consistent. theres an Energy to my sketches that appears sometimes that i quite like. and when i have the focus enough to add color and maybe a few blending modes, it always looks so visually scrumptious! (i dont do rendering or backgrounds anymore so i dont mean that part lol)

Im no expert, but its nice when i can kick back and admire something that im proud of. i know in another 10 years time ill have gained even more skill and it will be truly incredible! [end of the year artist asks]

I might be extrapolating too much here but

when ismail is with constantin and lou --> car problem with very negative result (scraped car)

when ismail is with lou --> car problem without negative result (car doesn't start but it ends up okay)

when ismail is with sascha --> car problem with fun solution (they don't have a car to move the plants, but they end up having fun moving the plants anyway)

I think this kind of shows ismail's relationship with each person/group. When Lou and constantin are with ismail, they can get in trouble and be a negative influence on ismail (car problem 1). When Ismail is only with Lou, she's a better influence, but ismail's still not completely comfortable with her (car problem 2). When ismail is with sascha they seem more like their natural self and don't feel a need to try to show off or behave differently in order to fit in. Sascha is the best influence on ismail because they don't get into big problems and because they can solve problems (such as not having a car) in a way that doesn't create more problems (car problem 3).

Don’t get me wrong, kill your darlings is a great movie (albeit not completely representative of what went down at columbia), but I feel like a lot of people are just missing a lot in terms of what the beat movement (or generation, whatever name you prefer) was and what it stood for. it fills me w a tiny bit of anger that more people aren’t interested in the beat movement, bc if you took the time to actually learn what it’s about you’d see a lot of connections to things happening today (ie: lgbt+ movement, environmentalism esp w gary snyder, drug decriminalization, music...) that you may or may not support and you’d find a lot of good literature that you could really connect with (yeah, I get a lot of people don’t like on the road, but there’s so much more to the beat movement than that)

I think if you really want a good (and really brief) intro to the beat movement you should read howl, but, more importantly, you should read footnote to howl*
