Don't remember if I posted about this at the time but I got thinking about that moment in Tel Aviv 2019 ESC where MyHeritage was one of the big sponsors and because MyHeritage specifically was one of the big sponsors they had this ticker on the bottom of the screen with random DNA factoids Brought To You By MyHeritage.
One in particular that lives just rent free in my head went something like:
"Ireland won the Eurovision Song Contest 7 times. Did you know that 2018 Eurovision winner Netta Barzilai from Israel has 0.5% Irish DNA?"
with a definite and extremely funny implication of causality like yes, Irish DNA in absolutely homeopathic proportions has the effect of making you magically good at winning Eurovision, maybe especially when this is an Israeli genealogy company* talking about an Israeli singer at a song contest being hosted in Israel
*technically I think they merged with the Mormon genealogy company, they're headquartered in Utah now which i guess is where a lot of the "power users" for family history platforms would be based, which itself reminded me about some of the uh, Interesting implications of baptism for the dead which is the main driver for LDS interest in genealogy

Favorite Songs From Each Country! Part 14/37: Netherlands!
It's funny how we talked about Czechia yesterday as they had a massive glow up, and then we have the Netherlands which in the 21st Century had an interesting glow up. Starting with a long NQ streak to Qualifying in 2013, 2nd in 2014, and then winning in 2019, hosting in 2021 (after obvious circumstances). So, technically, I "met" Eurovision in Rotterdam and joined along to Turin and Liverpool, and getting ready to have virtual fun (because I am broke) somewhere in Sweden!
Favorite Entry: I'm going to go for a song that will certainly be a CLASSIC favorite in a few years. "Arcade" by Duncan Laurence. When looking at all the winners, this was one of the few that I was like "OH WAIT I KNOW THIS ONE!" (others including ABBA in '74, Teach In in '75, "Save Your Kisses For Me" in '76, and "Fairytale" in '09...the first three were from my parents so thank them). But it's just really good in my opinion. It's probably my favorite winner (along with many people since it *is* the most streamed ESC song on Spotify rn)...so yeah. RANK: 1st in 2019 Final/PERSONAL RANK: 1st of 41 Countries
Thoughts On 2023 Entry: It's funny that Duncan is my favorite entry because he co-wrote the 2023 Dutch entry this year (and fun fact, he also co-wrote Gjon's Tears' first post-Eurovision song "Silhouette" so needless to say I respect him as a writer). So he brought forth Mia Nicolai and Dion Cooper with "Burning Daylight." And it started off good, I loved the chemistry (so immaculate!) and the sad, yet optimistic tone (which would make a great closing track to a breakup album). However, and this may be a hot take, the ending felt a little jarring. Maybe it was just me, but the ending didn't blend in with the song for some reason. A re-ranking should help it a little if I ever get around to it...RANK: 13th in 2023 Semi-Final 1 (32nd Overall)/PERSONAL RANK: 29th of 37 Countries
