This trail was a tough one!

At this time, I had already completed 72.71 km (45.18 mi) and climbed 1,017 hm (3,336 ft) on my bike during the last 2 days. My legs were tired. However, I was in the area and who doesn't want to ride a trail which is called "Epic"?!

As nearly all trails, I also found this trail online at AllTrails.com. According to them, the trails is 12.4 mi (19.96 km) long, has 1,476 ft (449 hm) of elevation gain and it takes about 5 h 12 min to complete. When I arrived at the trail head, the map indicated that the trail is 17.6 mi (28.32 km) long and has 1,942 ft (592 hm) of elevation gain. Anyway, I decided to tackle this beast and started.

After 4 h 20 min, several breaks and a shortcut at the end, I arrived back at the parking lot. FINALLY!

According to my GPS tracker, I rode 29.03 km (18 mi) and climbed 814 hm (2670 ft). I'm still trying to figure out what went wrong on that trail. Have you rode the Epic Trail as well? How did it go for you?

Adventure Travel Journal: Possibly one of the coolest, most challenging day hikes I have ever done, Angels Landing in the prodigious Zion National Park in Utah is flawless.  

When I say challenging I mean both mental and physical.  If you are inexperienced or have a fear of heights and falling, this might not be the day hike for you!

A long winding trail leads you up through the canyon and around, giving you stunning views of the valley below.  As you wind around the back of the canyon, you come upon a set of switchbacks that are built in with cut stones.  It is not only a work of art to look up at but a daunting climb uphill.  It almost feels like climbing up a flight of stairs in a high-rise building.  If you aren’t dizzy and too exhausted to continue once reaching the top of the switchbacks, the trail will open up onto the saddle of Angels Landing.  It may seem like you are there at this point but in reality, it is only a little more than halfway, and the hardest part is yet to come.  This is the part of the hike that is not for the faint of heart, or someone with a fear of heights or falling because it is a hell of a long way down from here and nothing but your own sure footing to keep you up.  You walk along the ridge to the peak on a tiny trail that forces you to climb, scoot and stretch you way over, through and under obstacles while hanging on to a heavy duty chain that has been bolted down along parts of the trail or simply the cliff itself. Once you reach the peak, especially if you had to overcome any personal phobias along the way, you feel like a superhuman. Staring down at the valley below, the wind on your face, if you are like me you are braving the cliff edge to give yourself a little adrenaline spike.  If ever I was to take a selfie, here would be the place!  I also had some meditative time to reflect and take it in mentally, no gadgets interrupting my view.

I visited Zion with some friends in January of 2015, a very unique year for visitors to the park as there were only little patches of residual icy snow in the shady nooks and crannies throughout lower elevations of the park.  We were able to do the entire hike without crampons and wore tank tops for most of the hike.  It took three of us, at varying levels of skill and speed, the better part of the day to complete this hike.  I would say conservatively it was about 6 hours round trip with plenty of time for water and snack breaks and a long lunch at the top whilst enjoying the view.  

     I highly recommend this hike to any willing and able-bodied adventurer. 

  Visiting the Park: I would recommend visiting Zion, Utah’s first National Park, in the off-season (spring or fall) as it is a pretty big tourist destination and it can get pretty hot in the summer months.  Spring would be my ideal time to visit because it is still warm during the day but not too hot, cooler night temperatures (I hate sweating in my sleeping bag!), and the very best most exciting part is the bounty of wildflowers that will be blooming like crazy all over the park.  There may be lots of wildlife activity during the spring too.

Safety Checklist:  Be sure to bring plenty of water, snacks, first aid kit, some extra layers and a charged up camera or cell phone to snap pictures along the way.   I always recommend traveling with a buddy, because you never know what can happen out there, and I let someone back home know about your trip plans.  I always check in at the park’s visitors center to pick up a trail map, find out fee and permit information and restrictions, and weather and trail conditions before I venture out.  The docents and rangers in the area can usually offer up a wealth of knowledge about the park.  By talking with them and visiting the center you may just learn something you wouldn’t have otherwise known.   Plus, by talking to them, you are letting them know where you’ll be in case anything should happen.

Zion National Park is an excellent place for any adventurer.  This stunning canyon is filled with trails to explore, a wonderful campground, excellent visitors center and staff, unique vistas, slot canyons, world-class climbing, the challenging Narrows and much more.

This right here is the highest point in Texas! Found in one of those national parks that many have never even heard of—and it is one fine mountain to climb! Guadalupe Mountain in West Texas...it looks so very different in this picture than it does close up while on the trail because it travels through 3 microclimates—desert, canyon, and high country—across 8.5 miles, climbing 3,000-feet. This is the only trek during our project where we stood on a natural rooftop and the view is super beautiful because the surrounding area is so flat that all of the colors roll into a gradient haze.
