Nasturtiums are a prime example of how pseudo-scientific names can be extremely confusing. This fiery flower is called a Nasturtium, which most plant lovers assume is its scientific name. Guess again - the genus Nasturtium is in fact the genus of the watercresses, a different type of plant (Nasturtium microphyllum and Nasturtium officinale) that grows along brooks. So how did this pretty and tasty garden flower (Tropaeolum majus) end up being called “Nasturtium “ of all things? Abraham Darby. I swear this is my favorite David Austin rose. But then, I walk past "Teasing Georgia" or "Queen of Sweden" or "Wincester Cathedral". And I fall head over heals in love with the heady scents or depth of color or all those petals! Roses were always my grandmother's favorites. She would fill her refrigerator with 7-Up bottles or pickles jars filled with roses from her garden. And when you came to visit, a jar of beauty would go home with you along with a bag of chocolate chip cookies.
