Birthday Presents

It was my birthday last weekend and our girls and their partners clubbed together to choose gifts they knew I’d like and organise a nice get together. Among the presents were three lovely David Austin rose bushes. 

I have a new found love of apricot and orange coloured roses, particularly the ones that have a red tint to the unopened buds and a strong coloured bloom that fades to a delicate peach or pale yellow.

Rose Number 1

The loose and blowsy shape rose blooms are my favourite, so similar to peonies

Rose No 2

Roald Dahl is paler than the other two

Rose No 3

And Dame Judi is in prime position to be my top pick, although her thorns are plentiful and very sharp indeed.

Each rose came in a box similar to the disposable wardrobes we once had when we moved house and quite a sturdy bag around the pot,

The soil is topped with a little chipped bark and on top of that a compostable blanket mat. This one had added little fungi.

So you can see that I definitely have a type and that the girls know what it is. What lovely presents to receive.

My joy in the morning on a hot Texan summer day: An unfolding bloom of the David Austin Rose ‘Munstead Wood’. This rose might be toast a few hours later in our relentless summer heat, but when I water the garden in the early morning hours it is still perfection. David Austin roses on display at the Royal Horticultural Society’s Hampton Court Flower Show, are described as having “a collective style and reflect one man’s vision. All have beautiful blooms and in most cases wonderful fragrance held on graceful attractive shrubs”. This rose breeder produces a beautiful range of repeat flowering Rosa cultivars.

‘The Prince’, one of the darkest burgundy red roses that I have ever grown. Not only is the color and bloom form fantastic but it has a strong old rose fragrance that matches its appearance. The rose was bred by David Austin, 1990. I think this rose is one of his best creations in this color range to this day. ‘The Prince’ had some flaws in my previous organic garden in San Diego. He was a stingy bloomer and was quite susceptible to powdery mildew. But when he was good then he was phenomenal. Overall I would say that he liked the Southern California climate. Because of the much more unforgiving climate conditions here in Austin I wouldn’t even attempt to grow this roses here, but I have to admit that I really miss him! Is there a specific rose that you love, but can’t grow in the climate where you live? Wishing you all a beautiful Monday!
