In this shady, moist border the flowers of Trollius chinensis 'Golden Queen' (globeflower) were creating a great contrast with the fresh, green fern fronds.

Because moths are nocturnal, they are vulnerable to bats who are also nocturnal. These moths have ears behind where its hind wings join the body. The ears enable these insects to detect the echolocation sonar bats use to detect prey.

The fast-growing annual Calendula officinalis (English marigold, Scottish marigold, pot marigold) has flowers in shades of orange and yellow. Here they provide a bright display in this raised bed as well as being a potential source of edible petals with a peppery flavour which can be added to salads.
