I made another offering, a North Dakota quarter, to the clown god. Hopefully, I'll be able to pass my NREMT test!

One of the hardest things I experienced today was having to work a full cardiac arrest code on someone I knew personally.

With all the horrific and traumatic things EMTS and first responders see on a day to day basis they need the same pay as millionaires. It’s unacceptable that a funky man in a suit who owns an app gets paid more than a person who is constantly on their feet, likely working overtime all week, and has to deal with extremely traumatizing and graphic events.
Like I’m sorry but a EMT deserves to get paid more than a plumber or a celebrity.

If I could press rewind, and talk to my 19 year old self:
You are capable of greatness.
I don't care what the odds are.
At the end of the day,
Your chances are better at succeeding
If you believe in yourself, above all else.
So put the past behind you.
Yesterday's failures don't belong here, now.
Turn the page.
Begin again.
You can accomplish anything.

Robert and the pills
So I had an interesting MAX ride yesterday. On the way to work a guy board at PGE Park. He seemed unstable and became agitated when lady tried to help him get seated in the handicap section. The guy asked me to help him with his bag (his speech was really slurred). The guy said that he needed an ambulance. I freaked out at first but ask the guy his name. The man, Robert, did as well as his cell…

Sentiments about my first boots
I was running late
As I always am
When I first picked you out
Pressed for time I saw you
Bright green box. Water proof. Steel toe. Steel ribbing for ankle support.
Perfect
My left ankle was always weak
I had 27 dollars in my pocket
You were 26.73
A fitting start for this chaotic career I'd begun
And then there I was.
My first shift as an EMVO, not even an EMT
Nothing but pennies in my pocket, and the attitude of "this is only temporary"
I was wearing you on my very first call
I was wearing you when I fell in love with my iob
I was wearing you when my job got hard, when I was scared, when I had blood soaked clothes and hair
You were with me when I was so shell shocked by what I had seen when I cried in the shower
I was still wearing my uniform, you included. I hadn't realized.
You climbed hills with me. Treaded water to pull someone from a vehicle. Kept used needles from being jammed into my feet with your thick soles. Climbed hundreds and hundreds of stairs with me. You sat with me as I comforted a patient's loved ones, and as I cursed those who wished to do them harm.
And as I went to get your replacement
The shiny new hires to wear
We got one last call together.
Truth be told, I'm not ready to part with you. We've been through so much.
But the time has come. Your soles have been flattened. Your seams are busted. You don't keep the water out anymore. You're tired and I can feel it in the way my feet ache and swell.
So enjoy retirement old friends, resting beside my doorway. Guard my home for me as you've guarded me through these turbulent nine months in EMS.
My new boots will take good care of me. Just like you did.
