Recipe for Barbadian Plain Cake Gladys Payne Gittens, my grandmother, arrived from Barbados around 1906. When I was attending law school in 1978, she read this to me over the phone. I was able to locate this on Mother's Day thanks to my friend Elayne, the Soulful Yenta, to whom I gave a copy. Simple pound cake like this one goes well with tea. 3 cups all-purpose flour, 2 cups butter, 1 tablespoon almond extract, 1.5 cups white sugar, 4 eggs, 2 cups milk, 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, 4.5 teaspoons baking powder
