Over the course of her career in academia, Judy Olian has achieved distinctions as a teacher, scholar and administrator. Previously a tenured professor at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business, Judy Olian was an award-winning teacher in management and organization while conducting important research on human resource strategy and systems. As the leader of the team that won a multimillion award from IBM, she initiated the interdisciplinary IBM-TQ program at the University of Maryland that combines students and curricula from the schools of business and engineering. As a leader among business school deans, she also chaired two key industry commissions on the future of management education, and on PhD shortages in business and management, which have had critical impact on the strategic directions of AACSB – the leading group of accredited global business schools. Recruited to head the Smeal College of Business in 2000, Dean Olian elevated the school’s visibility and student quality, initiated an undergraduate honors program, and spearheaded a drive to build a landmark facility for the school. In 2006, she assumed her current role as dean and John E. Anderson Chair in Management at UCLA Anderson School of Management. Under Olian’s leadership, the school has launched trailblazing new programs, grown student quality and size, more than doubled the school’s endowment, and globalized its programs and reach. Judy Olian is active on global boards, including Peking University’s Guanghua School of Management, University of Sydney’s US Studies Centre, and Catalyst, the premier think tank for women in business. She also chairs the Loeb Awards, which are annual prizes for excellence in business journalism from around the globe.
