Dear mister Cy,
I apologize greatly, I shouldn't have assumed! If it helps, I'm a he/him as well. I'll be sure to address you correctly from now on.
But, I'm glad that would help. I've looked through the past projects and I have to say I'm very impressed. But we can talk about that all tomorrow.
I'll see you then.
Love, Desmond
Dear Miss Cy,
Hello Cy. I was wondering if you'd care to join me for a cup of coffee? We'd meet tomorrow morning at the backroom of the town hall. As far as I understand it, you've never been there and this would be a good opportunity.
I could show you the ropes so you can understand how my job effects and works with yours. I hope we can work well as a team with this insider insight. Perhaps we can discuss your plans for the future of this island and scale them down? It won't be as boring as it sounds, I assure you.
It'd also be a great excuse for a break and to get out of the sun for a while. As I understand it, you work outside more than I do, and I don't envy you. I'm not making this sound very appealing. I'm sorry. What I mean to say is I'd love to get to know more about you, it'd be nice if we could become good acquaintances.
If you'd be interested please let me know.
Love, Desmond.
Dear Desmond,
I'm a sir actually, but no worries! It'd actually be really helpful to discuss these with someone. I'm not really the planner, I mostly just execute the improvement projects given to me. So, it'd be nice to go through the list with someone and figure out what's worth investing in right now. I've never been a big picture person.
That would be nice, actually. And don't worry! It sounds great and I'd love to get to know you too. And, maybe sometime I can show you the ropes of my job too?
Anyway, I'll see you tomorrow!
Sincerely, Cy.

Dear Desmond,
Hi. I know this is probably awkward, I usually don't send letters like this. Or any letters for that matter, nowadays. But, since I was able to greet all the other new villagers, and you're my new coworker, it only seems fair.
So, welcome to Maple Leaf! I'm Cy, the Resident Representative, pleased to meet your acquaintance. My job is to essentially ensure life on this island is as comfortable as it can be for everyone living here. Meaning I focus on helping out villagers and renovating the island to make it more habitable overall.
I must confess, I'm a newbie to my job. I was given it because I was the only one qualified at the time, and, according to some, I've made good decisions so far. I managed to move in all the citizens you see now, and introduced the store, town hall, and museum to the island. The last two are your reason for being here, as far as I understand, so, I look forward to working together!
It may seem like a lot at first, but, we have a good community behind us and everyone is working together to make this the best experience we can. So if you need anything, or if your housing isn't to your liking, just please let me know. Don't forget to take the time to relax once in a while, this really is a lovely place.
Sincerely, Cy.
Dear coworker,
Don't concern yourself with this supposed "awkwardness". I've never felt more welcome than I did moving here. I appreciate you addressing me directly. I've heard great things about you and, if I'm being honest, I was a little nervous to meet you. This lessens the blow.
I'm Desmond, as you already know. My job will be to oversee the more technical side of things. But, to make a long story short, I'll be dealing with all your paperwork from now on. I admire what you're all doing here, and I'm certain this island's successes are in no small part thanks to you.
I must confess, I'm one as well! That is to say, while I have worked in this line of work in the past, I've never done it on such a large scale. There's no need to list off your accomplishments, I've already read about them, and been told the stories by many of the staff here. You're a local celebrity of sorts, you should be proud.
I don't doubt that, and I look forward to working with everyone. Please, feel free to come to me as well with any help you need. We're coworkers now, we should look out for each other. And don't worry, I certainly will.
Love, Desmond
------------------------------------------------------------
Desmond pulled away his paws from the typewriter, bringing them up to rest his chin. His tail swirled behind him as he considered...all of this. He was sitting at his desk in a wooden though mostly unfurnished room. Boxes lined the walls, yet to be unpacked, let alone touched. He didn't have much, but still. When one traveled so much over the years some items just stuck.
It was so much pressure, to put on one animal. Keeping others happy, his many jobs in service had taught him that wasn't as simple as one thought. Especially when it came to something as personal as someone's hometown, island in this case. Others were quick to turn and become defensive in those cases.
They felt their very homes and livelihoods were under attack. He could only imagine attempting to run a whole society of sorts encouraged that more. It wasn't as if the people here could pack up and leave so easily.
He adjusted his glasses with the wiggle of his nose. Yet, no one so far had given him that impression. When he mentioned the name Cy, there were no eye rolls, no stuck up snouts, nor subtle comments with hidden mesnings. He looked out the window, pastel blue curtains shifting in the wind as its doors lay open. The early morning sunlight was shining through and, outside, as far as the eye could see were trees. He tilted his head and let his ears fall to the side as he inspected the sunspot on the floor with narrowed eyes.
He was a long way from the city.
He carefully took the paper off the typewriter and starting folding it up. He had an envelope prepared just to the side. It had been sitting there for a while now, Cy's address fully written out. He kept it in the opposite corner of where he sat his coffee always, just in case. He could smell the rich, brewed beans from here. A gift from his father as a moving in present. It was the best he'd ever gotten and he took that as a sign.
To think he'd really been all that frightened of someone who clearly just got in over their head... that'd be him soon too.
Well, he though as he let out a huff, blowing past his whiskers, at least it will be something to talk about with him. He finished, ensuring the paper's folds were neat before finishing. We're set out to be good friends already. We have so much in common, after all.
With a sigh and a slight smile, he put the folded paper in the envelope. So it begins.

Dear, whoever it may concern,
I keep being sent texts from my dad. He's gone past the point of trying to convince me to go back. Now he's just trying to schedule a time for him to visit and check up on me. It's hard to say no to that, so I just said tomorrow since it's my day off, and hoped he could get transit out of the city. I wasn't too far from home.
The neighbors came to visit today just before work. They gave me some housewarming presidents and advice about living on my own. I had to rush off, I couldn't be late on my first day, but still, the gesture was appreciated. Even if I can't really fit all of them into my apartment, I knew of a pawn shop that would surely take them off my paws.
But, work came first. I'm some pencil pusher at some big company known as "Happy Homes", which is an honor in and of itself, even if it's only an entry-level job. As far as I understand from my research, not only do they own an academy, but a showcase and a house renovation company as well. All with ridiculously good reviews to boot, and the pay wasn't anything to scoff at either.
Not much happened on my first day. I was shown around the facilities before being shown to my cubicle. My new boss, Lyle talks way too much. He just kept going on and on about the importance of good Feng Shui, how we were bringing joy to the masses, and so on and so forth. In fact, he looked shocked when he ended up wasting all my time, and just told me to settle into my desk and go home for the day. Some of my coworkers gave me playful eye rolls, reciprocating my frustration and quickly going back to work as he passed so as to avoid another lecture. Well, at least I'm still getting paid.
With my first day of work out of the way, successfully walking from home to work and from work to home, I supposed this was my first step into real independence. Just like mom always wanted. Going off the familiar atmosphere the whole place embodied, I have a feeling I'd fit in just fine. If I can get any actual work done...
~ Love, Desmond
Diary Entry 2/22
5:55 PM
Tia sent me a letter thanking me for coming over! I'm glad my compliments went down well. Maybe we can be friends after all? She gave me a pet bird and I will cherish him forever (I named him Petry). He and the tall Sproid can keep each other company, they're already chirping together and it's so cute~!
Mom sent me a housewarming gift, a chaise lounge (I think that's what it was called). So mature...not really within my taste, so I decided to keep it for a future gift! I knew mom wouldn't mind. I ended up giving it to Flo, who seemed really upset that Rodney insulted her place (and bragged that she was rich in the same breath). Either way, she looked really excited about it and I got a pine chair in return!
6:00 PM
Fuchsia claims the beautiful ordinance is in effect, and it definitely shows! There are flowers everywhere, I'll have to buy myself a watering can soon to see if I can encourage some to grow around my house! That was always my mom's specialty, not mine, but, it's about time I gave it a try. It makes me curious about the mayor, he must be a nature lover himself. But, I don't miss pitfall seeds! I just fell into my first one since moving in, and when I came back home my pants were all muddy!
6:44 PM
Marcel asked me to catch some ocean fish for him. I'm still pretty rusty, but I managed to catch a squid after hours of effort. I almost gave up but it was worth it! He gave me a chef's outfit, which reminds me of what mom used to wear when she worked at the cafe. She made the best pancakes anywhere! I miss those days, and they aren't even that far behind me. This is weird, but surely it won't always feel this way, right?
Shortly after putting it on, Fuschia bought my bitterling and Marcel my goby, so clearly it's a good luck item! I hope it makes it rain, that'd be a gyroid paradise!
7:00 PM
Moving is hard, huh?
Rodney asked me to make a huge decision. He said he wanted to move, and I didn't have the heart to tell him to stay. I know what it feels like to need a new start, and he's been here much longer than I have, so. Thinking about it now, maybe I was being too selfish.
On the bright side, I also found Fuchsia having a conversation with Flo about learning a "special move". They then started talking about strange markings...I didn't quite follow, but it had me curious! If only I read more comics. I tried to play the part of the damsel with mixed results.
7:09 PM
To end my day, I pulled the bandaid off and finally paid my house mortgage! Starting tomorrow I'll be living in an actual house! Tia is letting me stay over at hers during construction, and I'm really looking forward to both! As intimidating as it is to start my new life. It's official, I'm a proper resident of Fon, house and all.

Dear, whoever it may concern,
I found a nice apartment just on the outskirts of the city. Well, when I say nice I mean livable, and livable is just what I was hoping for. Its small but a comfortable size for one person, enough room to fit in a bedroom and a desk so I can get some work done at home and keep myself occupied.
I already have it all worked out. I've made a map for myself, of the suburbs, circling the most important locations and the ones I plan to go to next. I packed the necessary furniture with me, so now it's just a matter of meals and figuring out my commute. The latter was unnecessary of course, as I'd made sure everything was within walking distance before committing, of course. Mother hadn't put me through all those rigorous "what if" scenarios for nothing.
I even had a couple of potential jobs in the area scoped out. Before I left, I was waiting to be called in for an interview, and the moment the interview came I knew it was fate. It was a desk job, which was not preferable, but I could always work my way up through the system. This isn't mother's company, I keep having to remind myself.
Dad called shortly after I left. He kept insisting that moving out was a big step that was hard for many, that I should come back, not waste my youth and take things at my own pace. I had to force myself to bite my tongue to not let slip that this was my own pace. Where was he when I was sat down to talk about potential careers in grade school? Of course, I knew the answer to that, I just didn't want to admit it.
I wish he'd stop thinking about me.

Diary Entry 2/21
2:00 PM
I went to Tia's house today. It was beautiful, she has such a cute taste in furniture! I really wanted her pastry stand, but I was too shy to ask and I'm a bit short on bells. It looks better in her house anyway.
After just moving on, it's nice to be making friends. Well, I hope we can be friends at least. Should I have said that too?
4:02 PM
I bought a shovel and fishing rod, which I used to collect enough money to buy a crane game, and a lovely armoire! I've never fished before, but I'd consider myself a treasure hunter in the past.
I bumped into Lucy, who called me snoooink for some reason. I tried to talk with her as we shopped, but she kept her comments short. It was pretty awkward...
Fishing seems like it could be fun, if only it wasn't so hard! I had to reposition my hands so many times and they hurt! If mom could see me now, she'd be laughing.
4:20
It was nice to get back to my roots, refinding my little gyroid friends. Mom never let me take them into the house, instead, we'd donate them to our local coffee shop. It was a hobby of hers, she loved bringing beautiful music to the place. But, she's not here now, is she? A Tall Sproid has found its new home!
On my way, I met a few people. Tia asked how I'm doing these days, it really feels like we're becoming friends! I said I was doing a bit meh, so she used her magazine to ask me three questions. My favorite kind of weather (stormy), what topic concerned me the most (Pierce's jokes, it's hard to tell if he's serious sometimes), and what kind of music I felt like listening to right now (fusion). All I needed was a pack of gum! Rodney also adopted my bitterling for a hospital screen...I sold it immediately.
I visited the local museum. They don't take gyroids, so I decided to send those back home! I hope they're still thinking about me.

Dear, whoever it may concern,
I just moved out. I couldn't take it anymore. All the rude customers, the hard work that amounted all to nothing, the "it wasn't your fault"s. I never wanted to leave dad alone, not after everything he'd been through, but I had no other choice. If I had remained, he'd continue to wallow, and I'd continue to take advantage of his effortless kindness that I didn't need.
I'm nineteen. I've been prepared to move out since I was sixteen, maybe earlier than that. I'd worked temp jobs, saved up, it didn't make sense to stay when there was nothing for me here. Or, maybe I'm just saying all this to justify it somehow. To make it somehow okay...
...I'm sorry dad.
~ Love, Desmond
Diary Entry 2/20
I spent the whole day helping an enthusiastic performer named Pavé during the spring festival. Just after moving and my new life has already caught me off guard! Gathering the feathers was a bit of a pain but, all the running around kept me warm, and my neighbors were so helpful! Well, except that time Pierce screwed me over, convincing me to let him win his feather back but, it was all in good fun! I still don't have a good read on him.
Healing, soothing, glorious, loving, passion, and burning, huh? I guess I can only hope my new life here really will be that exciting. It has been so far! Even if I'm still adjusting to living by myself. I wonder how hard it'll be to have all those things, mom said life was all about balance. I'll have to find these things for myself now...
...well, besides the burning part.

Traveling since 1999. Restaurants and hotels ranked for your traveling pleasure.
(Scroll Down)
The Roost
⭐⭐⭐⭐
The best coffee you'll ever find. Served fast and hot, with a bonus of heavenly pigeon milk if you're lucky. The place has a great atmosphere that is wonderful for unwinding after a long day of work or traveling. There's something to be said about their pastries too, and the occasional musical entertainment, given by K.K Slider himself is to die for. This is a must-visit whenever one is able to do so.
Cafe Maple
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This is a cafe in the small, lesser-known town of Maple Woods and absolutely deserves to put it on the map. Everything is homemade with the utmost care. The importance is put into flavor, with unique recipes or Maple Wood flair you can't find anywhere else. Definitely worth the trip, especially for the pancakes. The buttery syrup is to die for.

About The Cat
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Affinity For Food
Desmond is a baker at heart, after his own father's heart with the secret desire to open a bakery one day. Oh well, he'll have the money one day. This extends to breakfast foods and anything doughy and breaded!
His favorite breakfast food is sunny-side-up eggs and a frappuccino is his drink of choice, otherwise, he has his coffee plain. His favorite food in general is mackerel and he loves the smell of sizzling fish on the fryer. Coffee overall is his favorite drink, and at night, warm tea to wind himself down.
Desmond once worked as a barista, and ever since has considered brewing his own coffee and drinks one of his many hobbies. Even with his busy schedule, he sets up time every morning and night to be able to do so, and experiments with flavors on the weekends. He even sometimes puts his recipes online for money.
Nature, Take Me!
Desmond won't admit it, but he is secretly quite fond of nature, wanting a break from the modern life he is used to and just wanting to unwind. That being said, he tends to feel out of place in more naturalistic environments. Outside of reading, he often does not know what to do with himself without the aid of technology.
Still, when he can find himself entertained enough by his other hobbies or slows down enough to take in the beauty all around, Desmond is able to reconnect with himself for the unusual peacefulness and quiet.
Desmond's dream life would be to own a cozy cabin in the woods, leaving it to run a bakery in the day and returning to write in the night. "All the poems I could have written", he often muses to himself at the end of a long workday. His fancy type writer is still waiting to be dusted off by the touch of his paw.
Life Isn't Half As Good Without Friends
Desmond comes off as asocial, but he loves having connections. Having someone to talk to when the desk work is slow or the museum is empty makes working all that more bearable. He doesn't mind "worthless" conversation, and will happily chitter with his coworkers about whatever will pass the time.
Although a diligent worker, when no one is around he isn't above texting someone or checking the state of his reviews. He may write snippets and ideas in his note app, though he believes said writing is crummy when not in the right environment (which typing on the phone is not). He refuses to show this notes to anyone except his future self and those he is deeply close to.
Through his journey, he has meant many people and remained acquaintances with them over the phone or through email/letter sending. Ironically, one of these people includes Cy's (@maple-autumn-rain) mother, Desmond having dropped into Maple Wood a year or so after Cy moved out. He worked at the cafe, taught by Cy's mother where he learned the recipe for the perfect buttery roll. Cy's mom was beyond thrilled at the announcement of their engagement, having already accepted Desmond into the family.
I Was Busy Thinking About Boys
Desmond's gaze lies on males, something his mother has always disapproved of. In her head, she had a very clear image of his future. He would follow her own path, running the company, becoming married, having a child, and raising them to eventually take his place. So, she often sabotaged his relationships, something Desmond noticed in his late teens, and yet he was powerless against it, eventually giving up on the pursuit altogether.
In adulthood, besides a few flings here and there, Desmond decided to focus on work above all else. Although he enjoyed the idea of love, he never saw it as applicable to his day-to-day life. Not until he settled down and was able to have a long-term career and housing.
Romantically, however, he is a grey romantic (demiromantic by some standards), rarely having any romantic interest in anyone except a specific few. He is currently paired with @maple-autumn-rain's character Cy, who he later marries in our narrative.

Calico On The Run
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Early Life
Coming from a city, Desmond was taught the grind set from the moment he was born. His mother pushed him to have good grades and participate in extracurriculars that'd look good on his resume all throughout grade school and middle school. As a child, he spent many hours at his father's work, learning the roots while he still had the free time to do so. His love of baking stemmed here. He was a curious child, and was often told by his mother, "curiosity killed the cat".
In high school, he worked as his mother's assistant, keeping the role up until losing it his senior year. His mother gave it to a classmate when she found him more capable and disliked the amount of attention Desmond paid to him. She believed that served as a lesson for him to keep his focus on what's important. He was in the journalism club for all his years, and was on the Year Book committee as well. Unbeknownst to his mother, Desmond also took an interest in the creative writing club whenever he could swing by for a meeting.
His mother had him set up to enroll in the best college up until her passing, in which Desmond and his father's involvement in the company were entirely cut. His father only had his cafe to offer, and Desmond worked there as a barista up until the point he moved. While doing so, Desmond educated himself as much as he could on the side to make up for his lack of a higher education.
Start of Adulthood
By the time Desmond was nineteen, he had given up on college or becoming involved in his mother's company, and moved out as soon as he could to work for better employment. In doing so, he's moved from apartment building to apartment building and seen many different towns and parts of the world. He has also met many different villagers, and learned when to keep his guard up, for better or for worse.
His travels have taught him how to be frugal with his money, how to cut fair deals, and the art of trade, keeping hold of unused items in the hope of something better. He's a fairly good businessman, and has kept the things he needs in very good condition, mint even. Through his reviews, he's kept a backlog of all the places he's been, the good and the bad experiences. Over the years, he's set up payment sites for those interested in supporting him.
Desmond has been looking for permanent employment for most of his life, going from clerk jobs, to office jobs, to home improvement jobs, to jobs that required him to move, so on and so forth. He's been on the road for years. His least favorite job was working as a room attendant for a hotel, as he found watching the others coming and going painfully ironic.
Current Life
However, after receiving a flyer for Maple Leaf island, all that is about to change. It turns out that with the opening of the town hall for a self-governing island, they're desperate for workers to help them sort through all the paperwork and the more official technicalities. The island is growing in popularity by the minute and, as it becomes more livable, the villagers expect more commodities.
Moving to that island, Desmond feels an odd sense of peace. For once, on the boat ride over, he is able to relax, taking in the cool sea breeze and relaxing back with a glass of coconut milk. He feels he should be anxious, and yet, everything in his bones are telling him this is it. Upon arriving, he is given a lovely greeting and made to feel right at home. Tom Nook welcomes him to the island and helps him settle in before giving him the job title, as agreed. No questions asked.
Town hall paper pusher by day and museum curator by night, Desmond finds this island and, in extension, island living might just be the cure he was looking for.
