they're sitting on the couch, half-watching one of those old movies mrs. rose really likes, half falling asleep. claire had fixed them a huge dinner and mackenzie was struggling to stay awake from being over full - girl ate like she hadn't seen a meal in days, but that's how it always happened when she had someone else to cook for her.

a yawn breaks away from her, and she's sitting upwards now rather than slumped against the couch cushions, stretching her arms up above her head and rolling her shoulders back until they pop. all of a sudden, the phone rings, and mackenzie is the first to jump up and attempt to answer.

who could be calling at this time of night, she's never sure, but she goes to answer it anyway, winding the old landline's cord around her fingers as she picks it up.

"hello?"

she hears the sounds of gentle breaths on the other end of the phone and gives them a moment before speaking, tilting her head to the side and turning back to give claire a look before the sound of her mother's voice hits her ears, and her demeanor changes entirely.

"mackenzie, my darling"

turning her back to claire, the sound of her voice is hushed as she responds, trying to not draw attention to herself in the moment.

"hi, mama."

she says, voice barely above a whisper. this goes on for a few moments, hushed whispers in the form of a conversation that is meant for only her ears, and for a long time she simply goes mute, holding the phone to her ear and breathing as she listens to the dulcet tones of what to her, is her mother, speaking on the other end of the line.

she can feel @hollowtissue's eyes boring into the back of her skull, but that doesn't give her any momentum to hang up the phone. her body feels frozen in this position, phone placed against her ear as she whispers sullen apologies into the device.

there is something tingling against the back of her neck, but she pays little to no mind to the sensation, trying to fight the waves of guilt that seem to spread like wildfire throughout her entire body.
