It's the way that the desire to be fully vulnerable and the fear that it will open him up to hurt have been intertwined in Eddie's story all throughout season six
Episode 7:
"I'm starting to think I am [cursed]." (*note: he says this to Buck)
"My wife died three years ago. Six months later, my son was on a pier when the tsunami hit...the longer we stayed away from the water the more the fear would grow."
"Sometimes it's easier to believe you're cursed than believe you're wrong"
Eddie talking about the trauma of losing Shannon for the first time, giving us a glimpse into the hurt he felt back then and the way he's avoided letting someone else back into that spot in his life because the fear of being left like that again has grown over time. Felisa's message, that Eddie isn't actually cursed or doomed to be left if he opens his heart like that again - it's the fear talking, and the fear is wrong.
Episode 8:
"Sometimes talking about your dreams makes it seem all too real. Sometimes the fantasy is better than the reality." (note: Eddie gets a really pensive but happy look on his face and the next scene cuts straight to Buck)
Giving us another glimpse into Eddie's inner feelings, showing us that there is a fantasy that Eddie has but is afraid to turn into reality because what if it doesn't go the way he wants. Maybe it's better to keep it all locked up and not ruin the fantasy.
Episode 10/11:
Buck dies. Eddie plays the grieving spouse and watches as Christopher tells Buck to come back.
Episode 14:
"You wouldn't wanna break Tia's heart." "Or mine, you know? you get that, don't you?" "Oh, I do."
"I was getting set in my ways. And the longer you're alone, the easier it is. I don't want that for you." "Me either."
Eddie tried to protect his heart but it ended up breaking with Buck's death anyway. He's been avoiding a serious relationship to not break his own heart but instead, he's been doing what he didn't want Christopher to do with his fear of the water - letting it fester and win. This is him finally allowing himself to be open to being vulnerable with another person in the same position in his life as Shannon was before it all went wrong. This is him taking that first step to allow fantasy to have a shot at reality.
(As an aside, when I say he's been afraid of letting himself be vulnerable like he was with Shannon, I don't mean he hasn't been doing that with Buck. But because throughout this entire time Buck has been cementing his place as Eddie's life partner he's been doing it under the label of best friend, it's been easy to not allow himself to look it in the eye. There's plausible deniability there. But to verbalize it, to change the label of their relationship to fit its nature, that's what he hasn't allowed himself to want.)

I really appreciate the fact that when Bobby said he needed a second, Eddie immediately clocked something was wrong and stayed right there instead of leaving him alone

Something about Eddie’s whole “I’m a nester” and “I married the first woman I dated”/“the first woman you slept with” and Eddie’s profound grief over Shannon’s loss STILL…realizing that he really did go from loving her to loving Buck and that’s why nothing else has worked…screaming crying chewing glass hyperventilating into a paper bag

One part of me: I love that they are showing strong masculine friendships, two men being vulnerable, two incredibly masculine men in a very masculine profession, no less, being supportive of each other, showcasing a different way to have a family, a friendship that runs deep, they don't need to make it romantic because it's already amazing, the fact that it's on television is such a huge step, fab. 10/10.
Also me: TO THE CORE TO THE CORE TO THE COOOOORRRREEEEE! 😍
