She stops asking at some point, but like everything else with this man, she doesn’t quite remember when. Her life is a blur of missions and off time and him and nothing else.

It’s been months since the ravine and she’s seen König just about everywhere she’s been. When SpecGru was gathering intel on KorTacs drug affiliations, she saw him in the haunted deserts of Sonora, Mexico where she lies in the dirt redder than blood and coyotes sing her to sleep. She gazes down at him atop crumbling 16th-century Byzantine marble when she picks off the guards of a weapons supplier in Belgrade, Serbia. In the ancient and verdant bamboo forest of Yibin, China, hunting down spy affiliations, she camps across a creek from him for a night.

It’s a small world, but not quite small enough for her to believe just how they keep running into each other. No matter where she ends up, their eyes always meet.

The eyes of the apparition with bloody tears on top of an executioner's hood always flick right towards her, even when she’s under a ghillie or some camo or nothing particularly obtrusive at all. She’s even taken off her scope once or twice to reduce glare, to see if the monster still turns her way then. To see if the cat is following a laser pointer she’s unwittingly putting out.

He does.

He always finds her.

No matter what.

Jesus shit I disappear a lot.

I’ve been lurking on ao3 a lotttt. An unhealthy amount. And I’ve gotten into darklina.

Listen…I know it’s toxic but I like trash okay? And I read the grisha books and fucking HATED HATED Them. I ranted to my fiancé for like 2 months. Thank the stars for fanfic authors!!

I literally found a fic that I have accepted as the official ending. seriously. it’s called “Start a war” by nymja on ao3.

I’m also beyond looking forward to the following on ao3:

“Dark Guardian “ by FairyRingsandWings (this is one of my most anticipated ones!) it’s incredibly interesting and is an au that involves demons/etc. it’s amazing and well researched. She runs an amazing tumblr under the name @thedarklingxalina Check it out!!

“ The Fight we never had” by PoetHrotsvitha. this one is amazing because it’s self-aware it’s just hilarious. It’s been one of the most fun ones that I’ve read in a very long time in the comment section is to die for. I am so looking forward to the story and can’t wait to see how it ends. Jesus this one is just a feel good au. I fucking love It and I hope the author continues to write more because the writing is amazing. It’s intelligently written and every time I read it I spend the whole time smiling!

I never in 1 million years thought I would like any story with Alina and Ivan. And normally I do not like dark fics. Parts of this were really hard to read and there is another story like where she puts deleted scenes and extras, and there was literally one part in “ deleted scenes “ that I had to start and stop and take a break for a good while after reading. That’s a sign of a good writer. Anything that makes me uncomfortable and makes me genuinely think afterwards. it’s at the end now with only one more chapter left but I’ll be damned if I wasn’t rooting for Ivan even though I am literally a hard-core darklingxalina shipper. This is one of those stories that is incredibly well written and just made me feel so many different emotions. It is very dark. But it really goes in depth about how in mortality and misery would affect you as well as your relationships with other people.

Part of series “ Darklina Cottagecore AU” , The entire series is amazing. I literally never thought I would be interested in a cottage core au but it is beautifully written and the author did a lot of research into making it feel like it’s in the century that it’s taking place in. It’s heart wrenching in and has so much angst. I truly hope that the author continues it and also that they get a happy ending. But the writing is just beyond beautiful. Fuck it is just gorgeous! These are my current favorites that are still in progress. I’ll do my other favorites at some point. But if you hated the ending of the grisha series like I did then please check out “Start a war”. I genuinely accept that as the ending now.

Word of the Day: Ekphrasis

The word ekphrasis, or ecphrasis, comes from the Greek for the written description of a work of art produced as a rhetorical exercise, often used in the adjectival form ekphrastic. It is a vivid, often dramatic, verbal description of a visual work of art, either real or imagined. In ancient times, it referred to a description of any thing, person, or experience. The word comes from the Greek ἐκ ek and φράσις phrásis, 'out' and 'speak' respectively, and the verb ἐκφράζειν ekphrázein, 'to proclaim or call an inanimate object by name'.

According to the Poetry Foundation, "an ekphrastic poem is a vivid description of a scene or, more commonly, a work of art." More generally, an ekphrastic poem is a poem inspired or stimulated by a work of art.

Zutara Fanfic Recommendations

So my usual M.O is to lurk on fanfiction, follow the story religiously, refresh my AO3 bookmarks constantly but never have enough courage to comment. This year my goal is to comment more frequently, read WIPs (which is really hard since I am so impatient) and to highlight authors and works that I really appreciate. So here is a list of works I am currently following closely that are WIPs.

Anamnesis by idontreadheartbeats (T) This is the first story I ever commented on, which might not be a big deal for some, but it totally was for me. When I commented it only had a few comments and I couldn’t believe that was the case with how beautifully it was written. I haven’t read (or commented on) the latest update as the author is placing it on hold as they are participating in the Big Bang events, so I am trying to hold myself off. haha

Countdown by thetasteoflies (E) This story follows a countdown of moments and to my knowledge is almost complete. A wonderful read all around.

The Fire and the Flood by the_savage_daughter_0627 (M, AU) I recently started reading this work and while I normally don’t read many modern or AU works, this is written so thoughtfully and beautifully. I love the way in which this author addresses the themes of loss and grief.

The Proposal by the_savage_daughter_0627 (M, AU) Definitely not my typical read, but I love this new and expanded spin on the original movie. Very lighthearted.

These Scars of Ours by Neva_Borne (M) I originally read Scar Tissue when it was first published and I loved it, so I was hesitant to see what changes would be made with this rewrite. I am so glad I decided to dive back in once more, you won’t regret is either.

I Found You by that_turtleduck (E) I am a complete sucker for stories that are centered around divorce and self-discovery, especially with notes of eventual Zutara. I love the independence and agency Katara has in this work and the way in which Zuko compliments her growth. There are also so many heartwarming momtara and dadko moments.

Tenacity by GrapefruitTwostep (T,AU) This is highly reminiscent of a Jane Austen novel, but it is not a rewrite of any one specific work. The characterization, dialogue and plot are so enticing. I love how there can be so much yearning packed in thus far while maintain a T rating and the way Zuko is so broody and dramatic.

Southern Lights by colourwhirled (M) In which the avatar doesn’t exist, but the gang dynamics/teamwork are on point. Talk about a long road to walk (read?), this one is already at 46 chapters and we are gladly waiting for more. I love the tension and push/pull between Zuko and Katara.

Hearts Steeled to Hardship by ecphrasis (E) I love, love, love, arranged marriage stories, and this one takes the cake. This story exemplifies world building and strongly embraces symbolism, it makes the yearning, pining, hurt, and comfort all the more tangible.

Songs of the Northern Prince of Fire by tullyblue12 (T) https://archiveofourown.org/works/23659294/chapters/56792059 I first encountered this author when they were writing Hopeless and I just could not get enough. This story is framed in a series of shorter snapshots, but it still captures so many details, and important events.

all that lies within by tonguetide (T) In which Zuko is lost at Boiling Rock and Katara is glad her mortal enemy is gone, right? The dynamic of sharp remarks, hurt, and eventually the reconciling of humanity (both strengths and flaws) in both Zuko and Katara leaves you wanting more, more, more.

I'm still mindblown to think people in the one S&B discord I was on were arguing with me (or at least stating through implication) that it was acceptable for people to get on authors over what they perceived to be bad tagging. Wonder if that attitude still prevails now that ecphrasis, who's pretty damn popular, is getting harassed in the comment section of her newest fic, which is clearly pretty well marked as a dark, unsettling fic, all because she used "extremely dubious consent" instead of the archive warning for rape (because it's...not, as the situation is complex). As if D*rklina isn't a couple that easily lends itself to those kind of really unsettling storylines. You would have to be an idiot to click on it and think you were getting anything anything not disturbing.

And yet...here we are.

But that is, ultimately, what happens when you frame the responsibility of people's mental health and well being in the control of others. That's the problem of putting that power in other people's hands. It's ultimately less about protecting people and more about performance (especially since some newer research is suggesting trigger warnings aren't that effective), and it creates a sense of entitlement in readers and general fandom. It's really not the job of the world to parent and police the content you consume, but fandom in particular seems to be taking that tack going forward. Absolutely exhausting for any of us in the Millennial and up age bracket.

R: Are there any writers (fanfic or otherwise) you consider an influence?

So, I’m absolutely not arrogant enough to assume that my writing just springs fully formed from my head, but I’m also not an organized enough thinker to put my finger right on specific influences. I certainly admire authors (ecphrasis, GrapefruitTwostep, and Smediterranea come to mind) but I honestly couldn’t tell you if that’s translated into a change in my writing or just lots of feelings.

S: Any fandom tropes you can’t resist?

Oh boy do I have answers for THIS one though! Momtara and Dadko is a longtime fave, and anything with them being bi disasters who share an ex is amazing. If I’m feeling angsty vibes, then I dig the “Kya is Zuko’s secret lovechild” fan theory.

T: Any fandom tropes you can’t stand?

Hmmm I don’t know that there’s a particular trope that bothers me. I think my real pet peeve is when Katara and/or Zuko is out of character.
