#Repost @heartctgrown • • • • • • If you want some organically grown produce, you could visit the rolling hills of Tolland County, but you don't have to. ⠀ @park.city.harvest.llc is an organic farm business that is growing food in Bridgeport. Richard, Shawn, and Rosaline are the tremendous team behind the work of changing the image of farming & raising awareness about where food comes from in their community.⠀ Though they started growing in multiple plots throughout the city, creating beautiful green spaces while they were at it, they recently started to intensively work an acre of land in Bridgeport as well and have been bringing their fresh produce to markets and are looking to work with vendors too.⠀ But they grow so much more than food. They share their knowledge with the community by hiring local teens and teaching them farming skills. They try to educate the community about what local eating really means- that you can survive the four seasons in CT as there are many farmers that are producing throughout the year; as different crops are available, you just change your recipes.⠀ Yes, they are an urban farm, but they are also a farm, a small business, and community leaders. ⠀ ⠀ Photos by @alxspx and Park City Harvest⠀ Content in Collaboration with @alxspx #loyaltothesoil #organicfarming #smallfarm #urbanfarming #urbanfarm #collards #communityleaders #growingcommunity #smallbusiness #awareness #localfood #localfarms #eatinglocal #supportyourlocalfarmer #localbusiness #CTfarms #ctfarmers #farmlife #agmorethanever #ctgrown #heartctgrown https://www.instagram.com/p/CHbXPyTH0SD/?igshid=1fjxxgci49kd

10 Reasons Why You Should Eat Local in Your Community
Tumblr media
I love food. I love healthy & natural. I love Austin and the cool people we have here.
I enjoy shopping for food and cooking it. So all of these things combine to make me a perfect locavore. I have always liked going to farmers markets, even when traveling, and fortunately I live in a place where being a locavore is relatively easy (Austin, Texas). Not only is eating whole foods that are locally and organically grown much healthier for us, they also just quite simply taste a whole lot better. Like living sustainably, it’s not new or trendy or hippie – it is extremely old fashioned. We have, as a society, become completely disassociated from where our food comes from, how it is produced, and what is done to it before it goes into our bodies.
Here are a few reasons why eating local is the way to go!
1. Eating local means more for the local economy.  According to a study by the New Economics Foundation in London, a dollar spent locally generates twice as much income for the local economy.  When businesses are not owned locally, money leaves the community at every transaction.  2. Locally grown produce is fresher.  While produce that is purchased in the supermarket or a big-box store has been in transit or cold-stored for days or weeks, produce that you purchase at your local farmer’s market has often been picked within 24 hours of your purchase.  This freshness not only affects the taste of your food, but the nutritional value which declines with time. 3. Local food just plain tastes better.  Ever tried a tomato that was picked within 24 hours?  ‘Nuff said. 4. Locally grown fruits and vegetables have longer to ripen. Because the produce will be handled less, locally grown fruit does not have to be “rugged” or to stand up to the rigors of shipping.  This means that you are going to be getting peaches so ripe that they fall apart as you eat them, figs that would have been smashed to bits if they were sold using traditional methods, and melons that were allowed to ripen until the last possible minute on the vine.

5. Eating local is better for air quality and pollution. In a March 2005 study by the journal Food Policy, it was found that the miles that organic food often travels to our plate creates environmental damage that outweighs the benefit of buying organic from farther away. 6. Buying local food keeps us in touch with the seasons.  By eating with the seasons, we are eating foods when they are at their peak taste, are the most abundant, and the least expensive. 7. Buying locally grown food is fodder for a wonderful story. Whether it’s the farmer who brings local apples to market or the baker who makes local bread, knowing part of the story about your food is such a powerful part of enjoying a meal. 8. Eating local protects us from bio-terrorism.  Food with less distance to travel from farm to plate has less susceptibility to harmful contamination. 9. Local food translates to more variety.  When a farmer is producing food that will not travel a long distance, will have a shorter shelf life, and does not have a high-yield demand, the farmer is free to try small crops of various fruits and vegetables that would probably never make it to a large supermarket.  Supermarkets are interested in selling “Name brand” fruit: Romaine Lettuce, Red Delicious Apples, Russet Potatoes.  Local producers often play with their crops from year to year, trying out Little Gem Lettuce, Senshu Apples, and Chieftain Potatoes. 10. Supporting local providers supports responsible land development. When you buy local, you give those with local open space – farms and pastures – an economic reason to stay open and undeveloped. Not travelling for BBQ has had some serious side effects: BBQ Withdrawals, gas in my car lasting 3 weeks, cooking more at home and eating local restaurant food almost daily I'm putting on a few more lbs. Haven't had a haircut or shave either since this whole Covid-19 has started. Might look like Grizzly Adams by the time this is all over. I don't think my fam wants me cutting my own hair. #smalltowntexasbbq #texasbbq #smokedmeats #covid19 #socialdistancing #growingabeard #nohaircut #weightgain #eatinglocal #moregasinmycar #moregas (at Texas) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_GT4UDBZW7/?igshid=1mynj0su65v0y

About a week and a half ago we discovered that the pumpkins were growing up the three sisters garden fence and had pulled it down in places. This allowed the deer access to my green beans and they wiped them out. I was unhappy to put it mildly but we shrugged our shoulders and shored up the fence and moved on. What else can you do? I had written them off in my mind because they ate the plant right down to nearly nothing. Imagine my surprise when John sent me pictures of green beans, lots of them. The same day I broke down and bought some because my mother loves dilly beans and she must be appeased. I guess I'll be making more dilly beans than I planned. With any luck I'll get enough to can green beans too. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed. Happy Sunday my friends, stay safe and well. #poverty_hill #homestead #surprisegreenbeans #gardening #organicgardening #absolutelyorganic #gardenersofinstagram #uncivilizedpumpkins #roudysquash #greenbeans #dillybeans #shewhomustbeobeyed #lovemymomma #greenbeanresurection #ruralpa #countryliving #simplelife #slowliving #eatinglocal #slowfood #realfood #growsomething #growyourown #keepingtheoldwaysalive #myhappyplace #myhappylife (at Pennsylvania) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDrwPq8gpXC/?igshid=1u48hpgvwgoff

I call this plate "the traveller". Local made landjaeger sausage (german), Wisconsin cheese with tennessee whiskey in it, local honey, because honey and certain cheeses are so good together and my Cleveland, Ohio whiskey glass with Scotch. The wife has come down with my son's cold today and my dinner plan got put on hold of tropical chicken and pineapple kebabs and rice as she is looking just for soup. Need to come up with a plan b for myself tonight. I did get some whole wheat pitas as well as some chickpea linguine which has low glycemic index rating. Dinner plan B just hit me linguine aglio e olio. #snacking #gourmehchef #easyanddelicious #cheeseandhoney #charcuterie #playwithyourfood #eatathome #experimentwithflavors #TravellingTheWorldAtMyDiningRoomTable #eatinglocal #scotch #menurevamp #caringforthefamily https://www.instagram.com/p/B8mmqJQJ4JI/?igshid=nqso9czmcwsr

It was a day of bits and pieces canning! 3 quarts of tomatoes 1 pint of Mexican flavored tomatoes 12-1/2 pints of pizza sauce 11 pints of green beans The tomatoes are finally coming into their own. Still so much to do but the pizza sauce today made a dent. I will take pictures of our pantry soon. They look so pretty when they are filled!
