A double treat: Sophie Menter & Emil von Sauer

This evening I suggest you listen to two recordings by two of my most favoured pupils: the German born Emil von Sauer and my musical daughter, Sophie Menter.

These two recordings have been obtained with different techniques at the very start of the phonographic era. One of them is an object with a physical memory tangible enough; the other, all sound.

This I believe to be an electrical record of Emil's elegant Campanella. Pay attention to the tone, mood and trills; no dragging, no rushing.

This instead is a piano roll. And no other than the most splendid Sophie could encapsulate such sublime feeling into a mechanical recording, incarnate the absolute and suave into wood and paper. Hear and feel this great pianist, so near, and yet elusive. Here is Un sospiro.

one of the best things about Pokemon cards is that some of the illustrators have been at it so long that you can actively see their art improve and progress over time

for example, all of these cards were illustrated by Mitsuhiro Arita, just years apart (1999, 2005, 2017, and 2022, respectively)

Bread man made me wonder: Do you have any Saint Bernard characters? His coloration almost made me think of one, but I'm guessing he's not. They're my fave, so I'm personally curious!

The bread man is supposed to be vaguely st. bernardesque! His face was darker initially, but it didn't really jibe with the color palette and composition so I kept lightening it :'> In the end he turned out looking almost like a maremmano-abruzzese sheepdog or great pyrenees.

Saint Bernards were originally bred by monks in the Great St Bernard Hospice, situated in the Alps right at the border between Switzerland and Italy. So they would fit into the Vaschete/monastery setting pretty well I think.

#answered #ghostcurse #potentially the most monkish of all dogs #the early st bernards had smaller and lighter build and shorter fur than the modern counterpart #earliest records of them are from late 1600's which is some 100 years after their central timeframe so it wouldn't be 100% accurate #but large shepherd/molosser/livestock guardian dogs like this have been around for millenia

really gotta admire fall out boys relationship with music piracy theyre straight up like yeah we wouldnt have gotten anywhere if kids hadnt downloaded our music illegally in college dorms and shit. pete wentz would upload little demos and snippets to his blog and then take them down after mere minutes so you literally couldnt purchase them if you wanted to hear them, you had to rip them off his blogs. patrick stump had to illegally download infinity on high just to listen to it for the first time. american beauty/american psycho got leaked early but the leak was in such shitty quality that pete just went fuck it and leaked the album in high quality himself because if the kids are going to listen to a leaked album its going to be in HIGH QUALITY god damn you

I wanna get these TMAGP 8 thoughts written down before the public drops so here's your spoiler warning!

SPOILERS AHEAD

So this "Gifted Kids Program" that the Magnus Institute had is very intriguing. I'm going to throw a thought out there that's kind of a gut feeling, with only OTHER gut feelings to back it up

What if they were trying to make Avatars? I can't help but feel HEAVY Stranger vibes coming from Gerry Keay in this episode. Something was so off about him, and I don't think it's just because he was a much more normal person (apparently, at least) than in TMA. And Sam certainly has tendencies that lean towards The Eye.

I've been trying really REALLY hard not to drag The Fears into this, but this was my gut feeling and I wanted to share. Maybe the new entities (if there are some) parallel The Stranger and The Eye which is why I'm getting those vibes from Gerry and Sam, respectively.

I'm actually super curious about Horror's over eating problem like, in the first two weeks? I'm kinda wondering how Nightmare helped with that!

In his defence, after what he went through pretty much any eating would have been too much.

Like Horror hadn't eaten in years, and suddenly he finds himself in a place where food just exists. Like it's just around and he can take it - he's encouraged to take it because after the other two Nightmare was making a point of saying you must eat to his henchmen when they joined.

So he did the only reasonable thing and went hog wild.

There was no problem as far as the others were concerned - Nightmare was honestly relieved to see he'd chosen a mortal who would feed himself, and hearing him rip into an entire loaf of bread dry like an animal was the right first impression to leave on Dust and Killer. (Not that either of them would kill a teammate for fun, but without any LV and no kills Horror was lacking the intimidation factor they had. It's amazing how after you watch a guy shovel dry pasta shapes into his mouth by hand like his life depends on it you want to give him a bit of space to settle in).

The problem really was that going from eating nothing for years to eating half a kitchen all at once is a terrible idea, and he ended up making himself pretty sick from it. But the next time he went to the kitchen he just did it again, because the fear of going back to starvation told him to just eat it all now so it couldn't disappear. This went on for days, to the point Nightmare was considering doing a tour of aus to find a doctor who could find out what was wrong (and not rat him out to Dream), until Dust came forward with the suggestion of building him up slowly.

It was rough having to limit him, Horror has never been as grumpy as he was in those first few weeks (it turns out he didn't need the pasta to match the others on intimidation, hunger mood swings work just fine.) But eventually he was able to keep food down, and by then Nightmare had made a schedule to make sure they weren't fed too much or too little which was useful for all three.

So he finally had all his henchmen eating properly! And it only took like 2 years c:

Pencils Down was such a fun episode of Game Changer, I just HAD to try some of the drawing challenges out! For each prompt, I set up whatever background I was drawing on, and then set a timer for 3 minutes and drew like the wind. I’m adding blank versions of each “canvas” at the end, so anyone who wants to can participate as well!

LP Artistry (design and title a vinyl album cover for Sam): I was so happy to find this picture of Sam. I immediately knew I was going to make him a cheeky baby, basically the same exact energy he has as a gameshow host

Tramp Stamps (think early 2000s and permanent regrets): When I think 2000s I think of tamagotchi, Nickelodeon, and classic commercials like the Quiznos rat-filled fever dream. Plus I can never pass up a good double entendre

The Next Big Thing (pitch your best get-rich-quick idea): Hello, sharks. Aren’t you tired of reservedly nibbling your pasta for fear of staining your shirt? Well no more! Slurp safely and to your heart’s content with the Spa-guard-i ™️! The super easy, dinner plate-sized fork attachment that slides easily over any fork and shields your clothes from errant sauce splatters. Twirl your spaghetti without fear, with the Spa-guard-i™️!

New Pokémon (design, name, and describe one power of a new Pokémon): Introducing Snide, a nosey little guy who’s not overly popular in social settings. Watch out for his physic attack, Passive-Aggression!

Last-Minute Monster (the Dimension 20 needs a finale-worthy Big Bad and fast): For this one I used a fantasy villain name generator and got Duke Church. Following Brennan’s criteria of terrifying, emotionally resonant, and mechanically interesting, I concocted a monster who will appear toxically masculine, but in fact be uncomfortably submissive & masochistic. Duke Church is incredibly tone-deaf (terrifying), indicative of the dangers of enforcing a gender-binary (emotionally resonant), and he can’t be defeated with damage as that only makes him stronger/hornier (mechanically interesting)

This was so incredibly fun to do, I hope they do more Game Changer episodes like this in the future. Here are the blanks so you can play along yourself! 😊
