just finished reading the behemoth that is otherwise known as a day of fallen night. naturally, i’ve been trying to distract myself from the nameless ache plaguing my chest. i chanced upon this little gem:
Tumblr media
page 118 of the priory of the orange tree includes a mention of dumai and nikeya.
it made me think of this passage:
Tumblr media
nikeya kept the vow she swore to herself. even in death, dumai’s legacy continues to live on – nikeya’s, too. when sappho said “someone, i tell you, will remember us, even in another time,” i believe she was pertaining to this.
hhhhhhh i’m not okay </3

the way nikeya is a “flower grown for court” but dumai wants nothing more than to get away from there, how it ends with nikeya on the throne and her essentially taking over dumai’s role/rejected duty as the ruler of seiiki and having to bear the burden of continuing the bloodline in dumai’s stead. how dumai’s name (“an ancient word for a dream that ends too soon”) is symbolic and foreshadowing. (the dream as her literal dream connection to glorian, as the sterren in her, as her connection to the gods/dragons, as her life (both in general and the life she had on mount ipyeda)). the way dumai takes back her life and becomes maiden officiant, the thing she always dreamed of being. dumai of ipyeda became noziken pa dumai, but she finally becomes dumai of ipyeda again. I fear I’m losing my mind

Reading A Day of Fallen Night again, and I just noticed this in the Unora prologue. Crying!!! Only Nikeya’s mother, the poet Nadama pa Tirfosi, was nice to Dumai’s mom when she was at court. And she was pregnant with Nikeya at the time. I love discovering small details like this when re-reading a book.

Ok but like I NEED to know for SURE who the person in the Nikeya epilogue is. I know what is implied, but I absolutely NEED to hear it, to have it confirmed 100%. And if it is who I think it is then I have to deal with another heartbreak because...
In the Priory of the Orange Tree, it is mentioned that the current Warlord of Seiiki is DIRECTLY descended from the first Warlord (Nikeya) which means she had to marry and have a child. But with the implications that Dumai still lived this just hurts me more about the decisions they had to make.
I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS AND I NEED TO KNOW HOW NIKEYA'S STORY CONTINUES.

Dumai and Nikeya have my heart, like a sapphic love story between two women at court who come from rivalling families??? The tension at the beginning, and flirty demeanour Nikeya’s got (the amount of times Nikeya smirks when they interact), to their gut-wrenching ending?

i know these aren't in the same palace, but i like how dumai goes from seeing the history in the walls to becoming a part of them

idk how samantha expected me to feel normal about dumai and nikeya when she wrote lines like "She drowned in the ruthless sea of Nikeya, and she longed for the whole burning world to drown with her" and "I had a dream that you were still a godsinger, and I was your shrine" and "Some women left her with the thought that everything was new and bright. Kuposa pa Nikeya had made her world so bright it hurt" like??? they make me so insane

hi! we’re elli/jupiter and slava, and we run this blog to add image, video or other descriptions to priory content, and reblog priory content that is already described.
we’re trying to do our part to make this fandom more accessible, but we’re only two people, and can only do so much. that’s why we’re asking you, the reader, to help out! if you post priory content, please try to describe your images, and feel free to tag us if you do! here is a good resource on what image descriptions are for and how to write them.
you can also ask me, elli, accessibility-related questions, ask me for feedback on IDs, or ask me to write an ID for you. my asks and dms are open, both here and on @tragedykery.
with your help, we can make sure disabled people can enjoy this fandom too <3 (heart emoticon)
if we add a description to your post, please edit it into the original. thank you

trying to learn to draw so. have a sketch of how I imagined dumai <3
Tumblr media
[ID: a pencil sketch of noziken pa dumai. only her head is drawn and she has no hair. she has a round face, short, rounded eyebrows, a medium-width round nose without a visible nose bridge, and freckles on her cheeks. she is smiling very slightly. guiding lines are still partially visible. /end ID]

Spoilers!
Here’s my theory:
The sterren that was gifted to Unora for a year by the dragon Pajati, that was passed onto Dumai when she got pregnant with her, also caused Dumai to resemble the emperor in a similar way that the Berethnet descendants resemble Kalyba.
Unora chose to hide Dumai from anyone visiting the temple from court because she knew they would see the striking resemblance between her and the emperor. And that’s exactly what happens when Epabo and Nikeya see Dumai at the temple, both running back to court with the secret.
