Sometimes I think The X-Files is such a timeless and relevant show I forget it takes place in the 90s, and then I see a scene where Scully buys a whole bag of groceries for $11.14 and pays with a check

Do you think the morgue staff at Quantico ever found out that the real reason there wasn't an FBI pathologist available to perform an autopsy on August 9th, 1994 was because she had been driven to the top of a mountain by a deranged serial killer and promptly abducted by aliens (or did they just think she'd called in sick)

Back with the fact that blow my mind a few weeks ago (Dana scully is the same age now as Maggie scully was in 1993 or 1994 when Dana was abducted in Duane Barry)
I did some research and found that according to script Maggie Scully was 58 at beyond the sea (1x13) so when Dana abduction happened in Duane Barry (2x5) Maggie must be 59-60, give it or take.
(If she was 58 at beyond the sea that would mean she was born in 1935??? And that she died at age 79-81??? in Home again 10x4)
in 2023 Dana Scully turned 59 years old, more less, the same age her mother was when her abduction happened.
And if you want your heart broken you can acknowledge the fact that if emily lived she would’ve been 29 also this year 2023, same age her mom (Dana scully) was when she was abducted.

For all of the anons who have asked for more in The Fisher King universe, here you go. New chapter below, main fic linked.
***
A man takes a woman and she disappears. It’s an old story.
The media will tell you she’s pretty, always. Sometimes she is and sometimes she isn’t, but she’s given the grace in her tragedy.
Dana is, though. In the way of Celtic priestesses and Roman goddesses and Renaissance women so achingly beautiful they were allowed to let their hair flow like corn. Like gold. Like rivers.
She has cheekbones like granite hillsides in winter.
Like Persephone in spring.
***
“She’s dead,” says the Captain. Says Margaret. Says Bill. Charlie calls with non-committal love from from Venezuela. Charlie calls with non-committal love from Norway.
If she’s alive she’s raped. She’s tortured, she’s broken But Catholics love the sanctified dead.
“She’s alive,” says Melissa, over an uncut celadon nested in a swirl of tarot cards..
Tara looks away in disgust. In fear.
****
Duane Barry was Mulder’s own particular monster, his brother in arms and paranoia.
An empty place in him wants to welcome Barry, wants him to fill the lacuna of Samantha. He imagines smoothing neatly over him, like spackling drywall.
But Barry takes Dana and, that, Mulder cannot forgive. He wants to hurt Barry for a long time in a way that they discuss in hushed awed voices after battlefield frenzies. He wants all of Barry’s insides on the outside, twitching and wet.
He gathers Dana’s animals to him, brings them into his home. He strokes their fur in his bed, he loves their angled predators’ faces that, like his, have eyes at the front of their heads.
***
Mulder fucks a suspect with the mindless short term satisfaction of scratching a mosquito bite until it bleeds. He hates himself and god, it’s good, the hating. He fucks her below the pagan sun and the Captain’s god and dares the universe to punish him. It’s a ripped hangnail, it’s his tongue against a toothache, it’s boxer briefs against a hardon at his desk.
He suffers with relish and, like most of the Scullys, he believes that his suffering will provoke tenderness from the universe. He bites the golden cross like an X-ray plate.
He wonders if anyone can see inside him at all.
***
He claps Bill on the back at the airport. He kisses Tara’s silky cheek, smells her knockoff Chanel #5.
Bill looks at him like a boy at Christmas, like Mulder’s the Grownup and can promise him everything.
“I love my sister,”. Bill says, as though it’s a shibboleth.
“So do I,” Mulder replies.
It’s the first time he talks about someone else’s sister and means it.
***
She turns up at the hospital like a message in a bottle. She is soft and pale and bloated and alive. He kisses her cheek like a Torah. He kisses her cheek like the earth of his true homeland.
***
Mulder holds a vigil for her as though she’s bound to Yggdrasil. Nine days and nine nights and perhaps she’s gained all knowledge. Perhaps she understands the runes.
Or maybe he does - who is the sacrifice and who is the sacrificed? Odin, spear-pierced, died for himself like Dana’s own god.
Melissa holds her sister’s hand. She holds his hand too, at the same time, her mass of red hair like ivy in the fall. She murmurs nothingness to the cold white stone of the moon.
“The moon is female,” Melissa confides to him at 2 AM over cheap wine and shrimp fried rice. “She’s the spiritual mother-guardian off all women.”
He says that he agrees, because it’s as true as any other fucking thing.
Margaret’s gaze is the sky before a shuttle launch, the Captain’s handshake the last thing you feel before your soul is ferried across the Acheron and the Styx.
Odin gave up his eye for the deep knowledge. Mulder would give up his eye for surety of her safety. He’ll give up both for what he brought to her. He understands why people suffer for communion with their gods now.
He understands why they surrendered hearts to bleed down the stones. He understands that prayers are a way to articulate fear.
***
Dana opens her eyes like a Marian apparition.
“Mulder?” she says, frowning.
He feels her voice the way magnets feel true north. “Hi,” he breathes, after days of planning the perfect response for this moment.
She blinks. “Did I fall asleep?” she mumbles. “Where are we? What happened?”
He kisses her knuckles, the delicate papyrus inside of her blue-tinted wrist. He marvels at the engineering of her thumb.
“You took a nap,” he says, rather breathless. Rather choked.
“Mmmm,” Dana says. She laces her fingers through his, she curls onto her side. She takes in the hospital room, frowning.
Then she seems to remember. “Ohhhh,” she whispers, eyes wide. “Am I okay?”
He nods. “Nothing serious.”
Mulder watches her breathing, watches her come back to life. He’ll press the call button in a moment, will alert the cavalry. He will make the Appropriate Telephone Calls.
Through the open blinds he sees the moon peer in. He says a prayer of thanks to its blank silver face, just in case Melissa is right.

the difference between when scully is kidnapped in lazarus vs by duane barry early in season two is wild.
you can see his worry & how he’s a bit withdrawn, and his determination to find her. he shows his skills in handling these kinds of cases. but i also think it’s clear he doesn’t carry real guilt about her being taken.
where with duane barry, he’s desperate. the lengths he went to, with krycek screwing up his ascent to the mountain, is insane! like impressive & crazy & amazing. he was just barely too late. but he has her necklace & her faith and he’s grasping at his own belief which is harder to keep without her there now.
they were already dedicated partners, but it’s clear how much closer they became in the span of a few months between these incidents. they lose the x files but still find ways to work together. they have clandestine meetings. they don’t lose their partnership. scully doesn’t give up on him when his depression is so palpable. she knows because he didn’t even see her in the hall that time. and he always sees her.
duane barry threatened everything they had. their partnership, their friendship, scully’s life — mulder’s life by extension. he had no one to help him through this, because she was the one who started getting him through everything. even his past grief. and that’s when mrs. scully became a lifeline. someone to share in his desperation & grief. and magically (to him), she didn’t blame him for her daughter’s abduction. at the same time, he was a lifeline for her. but it was difficult to keep maggie’s faith that she would come back. i think her giving up felt like a nail in the coffin to him. but having someone else’s belief to push against bolstered him. and then she comes back. battered, bruised, near death. and he falls back on the only thing he can hold onto. avenging her. until melissa tears him to shreds. because that isn’t what scully needs, and he takes the chance on melissa’s beliefs. because scully loves her so much (idolizes her) and melissa loves dana so much and these scully women know how to bring out the best in him with their blunt forceful honesty & seeing right through him. they know the good, sweet, caring man he is whether he purposely showed them or not.
anyway. all that to say, i love the evolution of their relationship. even so early on, the other’s safety is paramount to their own peace of mind and holding onto their beliefs and fighting the fight & the truth they pursue for such similar yet still different reasons.

I have a question: when I first watched One Breath, I thought Maggie was picking out her daughter's headstone when Scully was returned in a coma, not before-- a scene that took place after Mulder's rage but before her family pulled her off life support. Am I way off base with that? Was there a date or timeline specified in the episode?
I've always assumed that everything we saw in One Breath was presented in chronological order. There's no date of death on the gravestone. And there's nothing within the structure of the episode itself that would lead me to believe the cold open took place after Scully was returned. Plotwise I've always thought that scene was to portray right off the bat that Mulder wasn't ever going to give up on her. That's mirrored nicely in several subsequent scenes where it's made obvious that he refuses to let her die without a fight.
The dates and timelines are (as usual) all over the place in the abduction arc. Duane Barry has a date of August 7, 1994 as the day Duane takes his doctor hostage and holes up at the travel agency. Taking into accounts the timing of the events of that ep, it's safe to assume Scully was kidnapped within a few days after that, likely between the 8th - 10th. Skipping ahead to Memento Mori, the drawer where the vials of Scully's ova were being stored has a date of 10/29/94. I think we can assume that's the date her ova were harvested and that she was returned shortly after. So she was gone for close to 3 months, give or take a week or two.
But here's where it gets wiggy. The date on the tox screen Frohike slips down his pants in One Breath is 1/03/94. Wha??
I just choose to write that off as a fuck-up in continuity. Not the first, definitely wasn't the last.

All Eyes Lead to the Truth | Season Two Masterpost
That's a wrap on season two! From Flukeman to Albert Hosteen, we explored 25 of the characters that helped make season two of The X-Files so iconic!
Here's a look into all the characters we've met so far!
Tumblr media
2x01 | Little Green Men - Senator Richard Matheson (@monikafilefan)
Soon, secrets will snowball. Good people will suffer. Even senators will lose much more than their seats.
2x02 | The Host - Flukeman (@gaycrouton)
Fluke.
2x03 | Blood - Sheriff Spencer (@admiralty-xfd)
Based on the fact that there was simply no reasonable, logical explanation the man would have to do something like this, Spencer knew he could only turn towards the illogical – and that happened to be the X-Files.
2x04 | Sleepless - Salvatore Matola (@fridaysat9)
He could hear their screams, just like every night when he laid down in his bed and stared at the ceiling until the sun came up.
2x05 | Duane Barry - Duane Barry (@gaycrouton)
Someone had his implant. Someone… a woman in Georgetown.
2x06 | Ascension - Dr. Takeo Ishimaru (@admiralty-xfd)
He misses the quiet. Now it seems all he hears is drilling and beeping and yes, sometimes screaming.
2x07 | 3 - Kristen Killar (@fridaysat9)
There’s an emptiness inside her that needs to be satiated with blood… or something else.
2x08 | One Breath - Melissa Scully (@monikafilefan)
Melissa reaches out to gently smooth a stray tendril tangled within one of the many strips of tape stuck to Dana’s porcelain skin. The brittle hair snaps in two, and Melissa swears she can feel a piece of her heart snapping right along with it.
2x09 | Firewalker - Dr. Daniel Trepkos (@admiralty-xfd)
Albert Einstein was known for changing the world, he would say to Jessie if he could. Daniel Trepkos would only be known for destroying it.
2x10 | Red Museum - Old Man (@fridaysat9)
He may have been the only person in town who was making such a connection, but maybe these FBI agents had open minds and might consider it. Something had gone wrong in this sleepy little town and no one, not the townspeople or the sheriff, was doing a goddamn thing to fix it.
2x11 | Excelsis Dei - Dorothy (@monikafilefan)
If Leo tells these nice people that orderly Gung gives them special pills he makes to help them feel alive again, then maybe Gung will get in trouble. Maybe he won’t be able to free any of them from the confines of their minds like this anymore.
2x12 | Aubrey - Danny Valladeo (@gaycrouton)
Working in the lab felt like helping them put together a puzzle while blindfolded. The catch was, you never got to see the end picture until their case reports were finalized, and even then, the final image was abstract beyond recognition.
2x13 | Irresistible - Dr. Karen Kosseff (@fridaysat9)
In all her years working as a therapist for the FBI, Karen had learned that partnerships, be they successful or not, were integral in how an agent functioned, both inside and out of work. An open and trusting partnership could make an agent feel secure and safe, leading them to a successful career and a well balanced life. Without trust, accidents happened, careers ended, and lives could be lost.
2x14 | Die Hand Die Verletzt - Andrea (@monikafilefan)
There’s a presence here, they say. A consistent darkness that lingers like the gray haze coating Milford New Hampshire before sunrise. It’s an old story, whispered about in covert corners of community potlucks and PTA meetings.
2x15 | Fresh Bones - Chester Bonaparte (@gaycrouton)
In voodoo, it’s believed that the dead will come back again, that we should not be afraid of death.
2x16 | Colony - Bill Mulder (@admiralty-xfd)
Fox’s eyes glint with the sparkle of curiosity Bill still remembers from when he was a boy; way back when they watched their first episode of Star Trek together. Back before he knew he wasn’t his boy.
2x17 | End Game - Alien Bounty Hunter (@monikafilefan)
There is an extraterrestrial race war rising within his world: a rebellion in the making. A faction of clones and shapeshifters rallying against the oil that made them. Fools, all them. Hybridization cannot be tolerated. Purity of the alien race must be maintained.
2x18 | Fearful Symmetry - Sophie (@gaycrouton)
Willa not understand. Sophie scared. Baby go flying light.
2x19 | Død Kalm - Captain Peter Barclay (@admiralty-xfd)
He doesn’t know how or why but he knows what’s happening, like a road map for his mortality is written on his insides. He can see the end, and it’s close.
2x20 | Humbug - Mr. Nutt (@fridaysat9)
He didn’t need a suit and a hideous tie to make him matter. He wasn’t a caricature of a man, all handsome features, strapping physique, and perfectly placed sarcastic remarks. No siree.
2x21 | The Calusari - Golda (@gaycrouton)
Golda knew it was a matter of time before the Devil caught up to her. She’d looked into his eyes.
He knows her now.
2x22 | F. Emasculata - U.S. Marshal Deke Tapia (@admiralty-xfd)
Tapia grimaces. “You mean… ew.”
“Yeah," Mulder replies. "Ew.”
2x23 | Soft Light - Detective Kelly Ryan (@fridaysat9)
She tried to file everything away– the questions they asked, the things that seemed important to them, the way that they seemed to be able to converse without words.
Watching them made her feel like a novice, but at the same time, made her excited for her future as a detective.
2x24 | Our Town - Jess Harold (@monikafilefan)
Jess smirks. Chaco has no idea just how close he is to being the entrée in the same stew he’s so eagerly served the residents of Dudley for decades.
2x25 | Anasazi - Albert Hosteen (@admiralty-xfd)
There is a saying in Navajo tradition: that true love is like the wind; you cannot see it, but you can feel it.
There was true love between the FBI man and woman. I could fee
Stay tuned for more perspectives coming in Season Three!
