I watched 10 episodes of Dream of Chang’an and then got spoilers about the ending making me not want to continue watching. So in my made up story the FL is not as dumb (?), the ML figures a way out of everyone’s clutches and can rule in peace with FL. Also the choice of the red robe and hair down is definitely what got me this far and invested in the first place

Oh, brother...aka keeping it in the (royal) family
I recently realized that for some reason “multiple brothers one girl” seems to be a popular category in costume dramas. I am not sure why such sharing is necessary in a polygamous society for fancy royals each of whom can get himself a whole harem, but I am not complaining that it appears any remake of the Hollywood classic “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” would clearly be changed into “One Bride for Seven Brothers, and Some of the Brothers Spit Blood and Die” if it were a cdrama. Here are some of the dramas at issue.
Liu Shi Shi appears to be the queen of this subgenre to such an extent that I am vaguely wondering if it’s in her contract. We are gonna start with THREE of her dramas:
Bu Bu Jing Xin - Liu Shi Shi has not one, not two, but THREE hot royal brothers, played by Nicky Wu, Kevin Cheng and Lin Gengxin, pine for her time-traveling self. Since this is an exquisite (no, seriously, it’s amazing) period piece about loss and longing, she ends up with none of them, instead of a hot vagely-’cesty gangbang as one might expect from that set-up.
Tumblr media
Lost Love in Times - poor Liu Shi Shi, she’s a sexy witch having to pick between William Chan and his shady brother Joe Xu. To make it even trippier, the two actors look like each other, to really hammer the whole “siblings want her” theme.
Tumblr media
The Imperial Doctress - why bust what’s not broken? It’s the true and tried Liu Shi Shi and hot royal brothers formula. She’s a doctor who spends most of her time practicing medicine, escaping barbarians and creating feminism, not noticing that as she pines for one royal brother played by Huang Xuan, another royal brother, played by infinitely hotter Wallace Huo, is pining for her.
Tumblr media
Gong/Jade Palace Lock Heart - if Liu Shi Shi is the queen of that set up, Feng Shao Feng is the king, what with this and Military Seal, both of which star Yang Mi. Clearly, there are worse ways to make a career than stealing Yang Mi from a royal brother. Here, Yang Mi is a spunky time traveler in the middle of Kang Xi’s sons’ fight for the throne. She first falls for Four but ends up with Eight. In between, she offers to bang Four to save Eight as one does. Gives a whole new meaning to sharing is caring and “have you brought enough for the entire class?”
Tumblr media
Legend of the Military Seal - Yang Mi and FSF strike again. FSF is madly in love with his brother’s wife, and since she’s not afflicted by blindness, she shares his feelings. Surprisingly, but delightfully, happy ending ensues.
Tumblr media
Who Rules the World - more like which brother rules awesome Zhao Lusi’s heart. Going by the rule of “hottest brother wins,” Yang Yang gets the girl in a drama that is pretty yum yum.
Tumblr media
Colourful Bone - one hot seriously whumped out royal brother and one whiny immature one, oh who should the heroine pick? This drama stands for the proposition that you should protect and save abused people, especially if they are hot men, since they will always turn out to be an emperor in disguise. This drama btw is one giant kinkfest for yours truly.
Tumblr media
The Eternal Love - you could make THREE whole seasons out of timetravel and brothers into the same girl, who knew.
Tumblr media
Dreaming Back to the Qing Dynasty - if you’ve seen Gong or BBJX, you know the drill. Horde of queued brothers queueing for the heroine.
Tumblr media
(Mine and all my brothers’, that is -Ed.)
Princess Jieyou - Yuan Hong narrowly escaped the curse of fancying his brother’s woman in BBJX, being about the only sibling not in love with LSS in that one. But clearly, you can’t fight fate and shortly thereafter he’s got to be a sister-in-law luster in a drama of his very own. He is a barbarian general who falls in love with a woman only to discover she’s to marry his brother. Angst and deliciousness and eventual happy ending (the husband fulfilled the uglier brother’s duty by eventually kicking the bucket.)
Tumblr media
The Promise of Chang’an - if you want to watch brothers with the same woman but no happy ending, and have already watched BBJX, I present this recent drama where Cheng Yi gets to, as always, suffer beautifully watching the woman he loves marry his annoying brother. Pretty much everyone dies at the end of this one, going off to a great big threesome in the sky.
Tumblr media
Twisted Fate of Love - will Sun Yi pick the delicate Tan Jianci or the sexy as fuck bastard that is Jin Han? Being a smart woman, she picks the latter and my hormones rejoice.
Tumblr media
Go Princess Go - this is a drama that parodied every cliche there is, so why not brothers into one woman? Who is actually a man in a woman’s body making it even more delightful!
Tumblr media
Ashes of Love - even being divine, with women from three separate realms available will seemingly not prevent love interests being a scarce resource leading to sibling love rivalry. Deng Lun and Luo Yunxi duke it out ostensibly for Yang Zi but in reality for who can suffer more prettily. Deng Lun might get the girl, but LYX wins the suffering crown, so it all more or less evens out.
Tumblr media
Princess Silver - are siblings in love with the same woman not spicy enough for you? How about TWINS in love with the same woman? One awesome (Aarif Rahman) and one psychotic (Jing Chao) want our heroine and both marry her at one point. Only the awesome one gets to bang her though. (But the psychotic one gets to stick meathooks through his brother in compensation for not being able to stick...ummm...meathook through the heroine, so it’s all OK.)
Tumblr media
Secret of the Three Kingdoms - and now we are gonna go REAL PERV! If twins are not enough for you, seekers of strong sensations, how about IDENTICAL twins? Ma Tianyu replaces his dead identical twin brother as the last Han emperor and gets to woo Wan Qian (whose plan it was in the first place.) At least she doesn’t need to get used to a new face?
Tumblr media
We are gonna end here and not get into father and son sharing the same woman a la Empress of China.
Tumblr media
(Congrats to Aarif Rahman for getting to bang both his brother’s and his father’s wives on screen. That is an interesting niche.)

following up on this post i made, here's my translation of the entire poem (aka "du fu tweets through it circa 758 AD")
早秋苦热堆案相仍
awful heat in early autumn, piles of paperwork keep coming
du fu
august sixth. baking in this awful heat about time for a hasty meal? think again
it doesn't end. when night comes, so do the scorpions -- only to be replaced, come fall, by the flies
i'm going to go mad from my ties and belts. i want to scream ledgers and documents (cannot be urgent) keep coming. they keep coming
i'm travelling in my mind to those green pine ridges south of here oh the satisfaction of my bare feet breaking through a crust of ice
--
the poem begins "seventh month, sixth day" (unless "six day" is an expression for something else?) which, um, well i tried converting it from lunar to gregorian, but i couldn't find a tool online that works for 758 AD for some reason. if someone has a better calculation for what this timestamp would have been…
the scorpions are NO joke. my grandma had to deal with them as a child, she had a story about her sister getting stung (the cure is to kill the scorpion and apply more of its venom topically)
"ties and belts" - i think the first word means, like, the fabric ties, a synecdoche for the robes they're on? so like. more like buttons on a modern outfit. or maybe the strings on an official's hat? but i like the weird modern echo of a tie for now.
"travelling in my mind" - heyyy it's 望 wang from meng haoran's weird little moon poem i just translated. also in the title of li bai's poem on the mt. lu waterfall. anyway you ever think about how much it slaps that there's a SINGLE word that can simulaneously mean to look towards, to gaze at (in the distance), to imagine, to hope, to expect, and to visit?? and also the full moon. btw.
in william hung's chronology of du fu's life & poems, he places "dreaming of li bai i & ii" immediately after this one -- du fu, reinstated in the tang capital of chang'an (following the new tang emperor recapturing it, right in the middle of the an lushan rebellion which wouldn't end for another 5 years), wistfully writes about/to his friend and elder poet who has been exiled (down from a death sentence for serving the wrong heir)
anyway old man fridayyyyy i'm so glad this blogger backs me up that du fu would have killed it on twitter

English Translation
Once I borrowed a boatful of dreams,
and journeyed through the universe together with these dreams
Taking this opportunity with my own eyes to see the nine states[1]
Keeping the thin, cold moon within my sleeves.
The dream released one of me to descend the boat alone,
and helped the young man of yesterday
by covering up the way ahead in white moon light[2]
Do not inquire how many layers of spring mountains were wrapped in the clouds,[3]
If the will of my sword to paint the scattered pieces
turns into a thousand gusts of wind when clashing with you together
After being awakened from the pain, I'll continue to travel far away.
Do not ask the four seas to advise me when to rest,[4]
The mediocre man carves his name on the towers of Chang'an.
Thus the Great Way is but a worthless thoroughfare to carve the wind and the moon.[5]
Once I borrowed a cup of wine,
With the ancient stars, toasted a full cup.
Which smile has made me fall in love,
or made the mountains and rivers stay here?
You were the one who strolled through the night and handed me a blade,
For the sake of those with foolish dreams.
Life and death, gifted gently by you
Do not inquire how many layers of spring mountains were wrapped in the clouds,
If the will of my sword to paint the scattered pieces
turns into a thousand gusts of wind when clashing with you together
After being awakened from the pain, I'll continue to travel far away.
Do not ask the four seas to advise me when to rest
The mediocre man carves his name on the towers of Chang'an.
Thus the Great Way is but a worthless thoroughfare to carve the wind and the moon.
Do not ask him to forget the dust and the smoke in those years,
How many stories have been told in a thousand autumns?
Fortunate to drift with old friends in the ethereal boat.
He believes that the mountains and rivers will last forever,[6]
And the grass and trees will remain there eternally.[7]
--------------------------------------
*Translator's Notes: [1]This line can also mean ‘riding to the extreme’ to see the nine states. Nine states also refer to the nine provinces in China, also part of the four seas.  [2]This line literally said “white rainbow”, but since there’s a cold moon mentioned before, I think this is actually a moonlight [3]This line literally said ‘do not inquire’, but can also mean ‘no matter’. [4]Four seas in this song mean the world/everywhere/all around the world [5]For me personally I think these two lines described Yan Wushi. The whole reff described how passing through many outcomes and challenges, he had the idea of how human nature is evil, until he stumbled upon a pure mountain, a strong-stanced person (Shen Qiao) in which he began the change of his thinking (to the point of realizing how he was blinded and has been mistaken for a whole long while). [6]The lyrics really is written as ‘he’ [7]In this line it was written literally as immortal/eternal
**The whole song is very complicated in my opinion, and some lines doesn’t really make sense if translated literally, hence I’m also open to suggestions/corrections.

Summary:
Journey to the West is a Hong Kong television series adapted from the 16th-century novel of the same title. Starring Dicky Cheung, Kwong Wah, Wayne Lai and Evergreen Mak, the series was produced by TVB and was first broadcast on TVB Jade in Hong Kong in November 1996. A sequel, Journey to the West II, was broadcast in 1998, but the role of the Monkey King was played by Benny Chan instead, due to contract problems between Dicky Cheung and TVB. Cheung later reprised the role in another television series The Monkey King: Quest for the Sutra (2002), which was broadcast on TVB but not produced by the station.
This is another masterpiece of Hong Kong TVB's remake of the classic. In addition to being based on the classic "Journey to the West", the plot also adds a lot of funny elements, which makes this work create another flavor different from the original while restoring the original. A Mingling stone monkey (decorated by Zhang Weijian) exploded from a huge rock in Flower Fruit Mountain in Dongsheng Shenzhou. After the stone monkey learned supernatural powers, he made a big fuss in the Heavenly Palace and was crushed under the Five Fingers Mountain by the Buddha. Five hundred years later, Guanyin Bodhisattva enlightened Wukong, worshiped Tang Sanzang (played by Jiang Hua) as his teacher, and embarked on the road of learning from the scriptures and redeeming sins.
Then in the last episode, Tang Seng and his disciples continued on the road. However, Tang Seng had a nightmare on this day. In the dream, his hometown Chang'an City experienced a catastrophe. A giant monkey was wreaking havoc. In order to protect his righteous brother Tang Taizong, Tang Seng himself died tragically! Tang Seng woke up from the nightmare and knew that he was the reincarnation of the Golden Cicada. This was by no means a simple dream, but a sign from heaven. Therefore, Tang Seng decided to ask Wukong (played by Chen Haomin), Bajie (played by Li Yaoxiang) and Wujing (played by Mai Changqing) to go back to Chang'an in three groups to stop this catastrophe. Afterwards, Tang Seng was still worried, and decided to do what he couldn't do, and walked back to Chang'an City by himself to prevent the catastrophe. On the other hand, Chang'an City is a different scene. Emperor Tang Taizong was so overjoyed that he thought the ape was an auspicious beast, so he sent people to capture it and display it at the ceremony. The catastrophe in Tang Seng's dream is slowly approaching.

Tag someone you want to know better
I've been tagged by @wuxia-vanlifer! Thank you so much!
Favourite color: Green. Especially lime green. I know a lot of people dislike the colour, but...I love it. XD Also, I've grown to love pink even though I didn't used to. Especially darker shades.
Last song: I've been drawing while listening to cdrama soundtracks. The last song would have been 'Chilly' from the amazing Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms.
youtube
Last movie: I honestly don't remember. I do remember watching and really enjoying The Yin-Yang Master: Dream of Eternity, though!
Currently watching: I mean...
Tumblr media
And this isn't even all of them, because I also have Dream of Chang'an (Stand by Me), Venus in the Sky, Lost You Forever, and the Bleach anime open and ready to watch. Also, I am rewatching Mysterious Lotus Casebook because I'm making lots and lots of gifs.
Currently reading: I don't really read much anymore. (I'm sure you can tell why. XD) I have @shamera's fic open to read, though! Just need to find the time.
Currently working on: I've finished the sketch for a Fang Duobing drawing and I'm hoping to get the lineart done today. (That way I can maybe paint it this weekend.)
Tumblr media
I'll be drawing a companion Li Lianhua piece on the same paper once I'm done with that. I recently finished a Di Feisheng drawing, but I didn't like the paper I did it on so I don't know if I want to post it. I've finished the sketch and lineart for a drawing of Tinn from Laws of Attraction. I need to find time to colour that (with markers).
I also finished and lined characters from The Legend of Anle( 1) and Heroes (2). Colouring and painting always take me much more time, so I usually leave that till later/the weekend. Other than all the drawings I'm working on my protective!Fang Duobing gif collection. As of now we're at 112 gifs from 30 episodes.
Tumblr media
Currently obsession: LOL. Mysterious Lotus Casebook. The fact I'm working on three drawings and have already finished 100+ gifs in like two weeks should be enough of a clue, I think.
As usual, I'll tag the last few people I either followed or became mutuals with: @heyyo-heyyo , @thefakefangirl , @khahahahahahah , @purplexedhuman , @wangxianbunnydoodles , @dancing-out-in-space
(Please play if you want to!)
And anyone who wants to participate!

Very Subjective Comments on literary prose in danmei and cnovels
again just reposting an answer i wrote for record just dismiss it
Truthfully I don't generally find chinese web novels very well written. Outside danmei I've read web novels like Nirvana in Fire, The Longest Day in Chang'An, and Joy of Life, and while personal enjoyment level varies I did not find the writing literary, or the writing particularly good for any of them.
The same goes for danmei web novels. Some of them do have good writing, (all subjective of course), but the ones I marked with good prose are scantily few. These would include Before and After Marriage, Meng Xi Shi, 不问三九, 潭石, 三三娘, 静影沉璧; I also enjoyed the prose of Encountering a Snake and 2ha, but people have said to hate the prose so this is really subjective haha.
Prose which I'd say is good (subjective??) would be Dream of the Red Chamber, Jin Yong's wuxia novels (it's lively enough to be good for me), Yu Guangzhong, Qian Zhongshu's writings, etc., and many more of these san wen authors because their prose usually flows pretty well.
I've recently counted the number of unique chinese characters some of the danmei uses, it is by no means indicative of good prose but if you would like to use it for reference, here you go: https://fateandloveentwined.tumblr.com/post/724325933336625152/number-of-unique-chinese-characters-in-a-book
Note: I sometimes dabble in fanfiction circles -- some of the writing on lofter (chinese site akin to tumblr) has really good prose, especially for the Thousand Autumns fandom, I'm amazed haha anyway.
If one wishes for actual opinions:
MXTX -- same as Nirvana in Fire, prose isn't bad but is not very good either.
Priest -- a little less refined but still again, not bad at all.
Mu su li -- same as MXTX.
Meatbun -- I've read 2ha and Remnants of Filth -- the prose for the latter imo is not as good.
Yan Liangyu -- same as Priest.
Honestly? I've been conscious of my reading of "trashy romance fluff" in the past but I no longer care. I enjoy reading it, and it brings me much relieve from the hectic day, so why feel bad about my choice of fiction xD (Classics? yeah I'm getting to them, slowly.)
