Cryptid of the Week: Dover Demon

The Dover Demon has its origins in Dover, Massachusetts, in 1977. Over the course of two days, four separate teenagers claimed to have seen a strange creature--

Thin and pale, with an oblong head, and spindly fingers. Described as 'monkeylike' and short, it vaguely resembles popular depictions of aliens of the time (like Greys), though none of the teenagers made any claim of seeing UFOs.

Some suspect it was a hoax created by the teens. Others suspect that they saw an animal and mistook it for a demon-- like a young moose, or an owl caught strangely in the light.

It doesn't seem to have been seen since, though

The Dover Demon, a cryptid spotted in Massachusetts in 1977. Some believe that it was actually a snowy owl seen in the darkness of night and confused for a monster.

On this day:

DOVER DEMON

On the night of April 22, 1977, in Massachusetts, teenagers Will Taintor and Abby Brabham were creeped out while driving home when they caught sight of a thin, monkeylike creature. Hunkered down by the side of the road, it had a head the size of a watermelon and two glowing green eyes. There were no apparent ears, mouth, or nose on the biped, and when it turned its gaze on Abby, from a distance of eight feet away, she locked the door and asked Will to drive faster.

The previous evening, seventeen-year-old Bill Barlett and two friends were driving down the highway when the cryptoid was caught by the vehicle headlights. A three- or four-foot-tall, hairless creature with peach-colored, textured skin was crawling along a rock wall, its long fingers clutching its way. From the enormous head, large, glowing, orange eyes stared back at Bill. When he asked his pals if they had seen the creature, they replied that they had not, but wanted to go back and look for it. At first Bill, still shaken, refused, but one mile later was convinced to return. The entity was nowhere to be found. Upon arriving home, Bill drew a sketch of what he had seen.

Shortly after Bill's sighting, and a mile away from it, John Baxter was walking along the road when he noticed the creature coming toward him and assumed it was another person. When he called out, the alien jumped down into the gully and bolted into the woods as John raced after it. At the side of a creek, John stopped, eye to eye with the beast. It was outlined against the sky, standing on a rock and holding onto a tree, and its feet were "molded" to the shape of the stone it stood on. Afraid that the creature was preparing to spring, John dashed back to the road and caught a ride home.

Sarek: “It’s from Spock,

‘Mother, Father - Sybok, Michael, and I have gone to Dover, Massachusetts to investigate the possible existence of the Dover Demon. Sybok wishes to, in his words, vibe with the spectral entity, Michael will be operating a tricorder to monitor any energy fluctuations with Sybok’s interactions , and I have been tasked with recording the event with Father’s holocamera - Sybok said I was the most logical choice due to being meticulous with its operation. Mother, do not worry about rations, Michael has packed rations for 5 days for all of us and Sybok has an arcane Earthen book on natural remedies. Additionally, I-Chaya has accompanied us, so we will all be protected. Peace and long life; to borrow a Earthen colloquialism: hope to see you soon.”

Sarek: *Repressing his emotions*

Amanda: “Oh, you can bet we’re going to see you soon.”

Sarek: *speaking into his comlink* “Syvar, ready the hovercar, Lady Amanda and I will be leaving immediately.”
