I can not stress enough that in Star Trek, Amanda Grayson being an incredibly loving wife AND shitty parent is a feature, not a bug. She loves Sarek with her whole heart. And as much as she loves Spock, every single time she has to choose between them, she'll back Sarek. Spock grew up knowing his mom loved him, but that she also did not understand him and would never have his back.
Before people in the mainstream even had the vocabulary to describe what they were seeing, they understood on a gut level that Spock was a neurodivergent, mixed race adult son of two incredibly charismatic and successful parents.
There are so many layers of relatability here.
A surprising lot of people in very loving and devoted marriages aren't great parents. An unsurprising lot of powerful people with prestigious careers also aren't great parents.
Folks who grew up with parents who were great at their jobs and devoted to one another but who just couldn't relate to or understand their kids could see themselves in Spock. Moreover, he demonstrated that if they took a path radically different from what their parents wanted, they could become incredibly successful and even well liked in a whole different sphere.
Most of all, for folks who could see how much their parents adored one another but never felt like that love extended to them, there is something profound in the way Kirk looks at Spock like he hangs the stars in the sky. He's a source of hope that even if you grew up as your family's ugly duckling, if you get out from under their influence you can find someone who will perceive you as a swan.

Human half this, Vulcan half that. Spock actually takes after both of his parents by being unhinged (Amanda) and a bitch (Sarek)

imagine being average federation citizen doing a wikipedia dive on Amanda Grayson for like a book report or whatever and you click on “spouse” and it links you to a guy who was thee vulcan ambassador to earth for like 200 years and publicly called the klingon ambassador a murderer once and you think huh neat and click on “children” and the first person listed is described as “career criminal, activist and religious evangelist” with a rap sheet as long as your arm ending with him taking the entire government hostage in nimbus iii and then no death date he's just listed as “missing” and the second kid is a starfleet science hero you've seen on the poster of like 7 different documentaries on space netflix and you notice his year of death is listed as 2285 but “years active” goes on like 100 years past that and also he's apparently the reason earth isn't completely underwater right now? then you read his sister's article and it's all “starfleet's first mutineer” “blamed for starting the first federation-klingon war” “lauded for ending the first federation-klingon war” but is weirdly vague on what happened to her after that and the article is edit locked and her year of death has like 6 annotations attached to it

imagine amanda watching how mothers on vulcan share a telepathic bond with their children and not being able to do this for spock
imagine how it would break her heart, how she might worry they'll never connect when she sees a mother touching her daughter's face or holding her son's hand with purpose, without words
imagine spock melding with her as soon as he's able, showing her he loves her because he can't say it, he'll never be able to say it
imagine her being so proud of her little boy for researching and teaching himself to meld with a non-telepath just for her, all for her
holding him after when he's so exhausted he goes boneless in her arms and she strokes his hair and thanks him
and he mumbles something about it being illogical to thank him before falling asleep and she holds his little hand and feels the tiniest sparks of love still there, so small she might've imagined them before he's snoring softly

I don't remember who on tumblr said that Amanda ships Spirk and Sarek ships Spones but it is HILARIOUS because, like
The way Sarek and Amanda meet Kirk and Bones in "Journey to Babel" is deeply chaotic and basically shows off the weirdest possible angles of their relationships with Spock.
Like Kirk's running around and getting into fights, gets stabbed, fakes that he's ok so Spock can give Sarek his blood, solves the mystery and immediately collapses.
Meanwhile Bones is trying very hard to emphasis how out of his depth he is, gets peer pressured into using an experimental medicine and doing a surgery he isn't sure of, does everything great despite being thrown around cause they're being shot at, and yells at everyone to stay in bed afterward.
This is literally the only time Bones looks like the most stable person in this relationship and yet I could totally see Sarek being like "yeah, this human seems logical" while Amanda's like "no, the guy who fakes being ok so Spock can do what he wants to anyways is better"

Okay everyone, say it with me: mind melds are intimate, which does not inherently mean sexual.
This has been a PSA from the PASWW (people against sex with whales) Foundation
