Can you imagine how wild it must be to be Donnel in Fire Emblem Awakening?

Like, okay. Your a dude living in your village. It’s a pretty swell life. You live with your ma and your familial clan on the farm and things are pretty chill. The one thing setting you apart from everyone else is that you’re mildly okay at stabbing things than other kids your age.

And then bandits attack, which sucks, but then you run into the LITERAL PRINCE OF YOUR COUNTRY and his band of super-soldier badasses and you’re like “Hey! Bandits are attacking! Help us!”

And, you know, the Prince is a cool guy and he agrees to help you out, but he’s also like “YO, YOU SHOULD HELP US STAB ALL THE BANDITS!”

Uh, Sir? I am Poor. I have a pitchfork and a pot on my head. do I look like the kind of person who should stab bandits professionally?

“NO, NO. TRUST ME. YOU’LL BE AWESOME AT IT!”

So, almost against your will, your fighting alongside nobility and royalty and people are throwing fucking magic around that you’ve probably only ever heard legends about, but, hey, turns out you’re REALLY good at stabbing people. What luck! And you’re not dead so the Prince offers to let you join his army of badasses.

So now you’re here, a fucking kid with a pot on his head, and you’re fighting alongside heroes of myth and legend and they seem to expect you to be as badass as they are and you start training like hell because it’s either improve or die.

Like, can you just imagine? Like, actually getting sucked into this world of geo-political magic and apocalypses and you have a fucking bucket on your head?

And I always get him and Lissa to S-Support so he’s marrying into literal royalty too.

And then your kid from the future shows up.

Like, I just think Donnel deserves more appreciation.

This ask is going to be kind of long, but your platform is really the only platform where I feel comfortable having this conversation. You don’t have to post this if you don’t want to, I won’t feel any sort of ways about it, but I’ve got to get this feeling out of my system. The way the fandom treats Fates compared to the other games in the franchise, makes them completely unbearable. I don’t think I can forgive the fandom for it even if they did somehow start giving Fates its overdue credit. Treating its fans like shit for almost a decade is unacceptable. I don’t know how so many people can justify their behavior in regards to this game. The fans of this game have literally done nothing to the fandom other than love it unapologetically, and we still get condescended to about it. You dare offer your opinion about a take in the series and it’s like, “You’re a Corrin fan, you have no right to talk about anything.” I have never seen a group of fans that have to literally HIDE the fact that they cherish a game in order to appease its larger community, it’s so disgusting. I don’t care if I’m being harsh with this ask because I have witnessed and dealt with this condescension for years. I don’t care to spare any feelings at this point, and I think the fandom certainly doesn’t deserve any of our grace either. Calling out the elitism, cliquish behavior, and hypocrisy is the right thing to do no matter how much some people soften/normalize these issues.

It's certainly an unfortunate situation. While Fates has its problems--I say this as a diehard fan--I agree in that it's in a singular situation where it's just met with derision initially and only given praise in backhanded manners. Think "Fates sucks but it does have great X and Y" and including an obligatory compliment towards Conquest. Which, don't get me wrong, Conquest is fucking amazing in the gameplay department, but half the time I'm just like... all right, I think you're just pretending to like anything of Fates just because you feel obligated to like one of the most acclaimed gameplay centered entries in the series.

There was just the perfect storm of controversy and unmet expectations that people had towards the game: the woefully inaccurate conversion therapy accusations, the romance options, the sales model of having multiple versions, the story not being liked, Corrin not being liked, the cast being seen as tropey, the fanservice hatred, etc. Its reputation from pre-release to nearly a decade after release is just a swamp of negativity.

And, in risk of sounding defensive and deflective, Awakening did most of this first. Awakening used being gay as a constant punchline especially in DLC (but people are reclaiming that now as something to be praised cuz of course), Awakening had problematic romance options (Nowi, any of the children but especially Nah, Donnel, Ricken, and Lissa are still underage, Aversa is technically your sister and she's written in the M!Robin support to tease that aspect, Tharja in her entirety), Awakening's cast was the de facto tropey cast before Fates, its story was criticized for the same things Fates was (poorly explained lore and world, pacing issues, convenient plot devices, pandering to a previous game, and had its exclusive issue of being inconsistent with Archanea's lore), Robin was criticized for being an all loved player insert with too many powers/importance, it started the oddly designed armor designs for fanservice reasons, and while it didn't have multiple versions, it was the first game with a ton of paid DLC.

Don't get me wrong, I love Awakening to pieces. But that game started pretty much everything Fates gets shit for. Yet it gets retrospective love or at the very least a pass cuz... Fates does it worse/more and because it was gonna be the last game in the series? Wouldn't it be fair then, to give slack to Fates for following in the footsteps of the most well received and successful game in the series by replicating it while trying to improve on what some felt were lacking? But I guess at that point, people think it utterly failed in improving on the story and characters so :/

I think you have a point regarding Fates fans as well. We're pretty much the only FE fans that get unironic negative labels, at least by casual aduiences. Apparetnly we're "coomer, porn brain freaks who don't know what good games are." Though, that's about it in terms of the elitism thing, otherwise I think it's just fans of older games being out off by the direction newer games have gone, and most make no distinction and criticize all of Awakening, Fates, 3H, and Engage. Still, Fates fans are the ones getting the most accepted flak.

To end this off, let's be honest: If Fates is the example most people give of the worst game in the series, FE fans have it pretty fucking good lmao.

Hey so I know your thoughts on Fandom shipping. Namely you don't like when people ship characters who are in a canon relationship with other people, or when the ship goes against a character's sexuality. Can you give a list of Canon ships and sexualities so we know what we can make fanart of this AU of? Like, what ships for these versions of the characters we can make fan content for?

And when I do ship, it's because I can connect to it. And I get vocal. And since I am Heterosexual (though maybe with the sec repulsion I'm Acespec? I dunno. But I am definitely Heteromantic), I only really connect to male and female pairings. But I don't like EVERY male and female pairing. I am very picky. Like I said, I don’t ship much. Oh also my other fe solid ships / what I count as my canon (incl what goes into the kids who show up in fates)

Chrobin of course

Lissa x donnel x ricken (donnel and ricken shared lissa in a sort of "were poly but not for eachother" way at first but ended up falling for eachother too) (to be clear, owain is only born later on after all 3 have had some time to grow up and be like... # adulting.) Both ricken and donnel don't really dig the idea of being a part of the royal family and find it overwhelming but ricken ends up bearing the title as her prince, and continues to pursue magic and become a respected anima wizard. Donnel goes back home to be near his family especially his mother and help on the farm and with her health as she ages, but will eventually slowly make the shift closer to his lovers after his mother's death.

Henry doesn't really commit both because he's aro and it's not really in his nature, but he flits in and out of Libra and Cherche's relationship as a third and plays around with Panne sometimes. He does take responsibility as a father for both Yarne and Gerome though.

Ones I'm kinda ~~~ ehhhh... on

Gaius and Tharja are just kinda loosely together. Tharja is... tharja. Yk... and then gaius just thinks her goth mommy dommy sadist nature is hot but they don't really feel too one way about eachother.

Sully and lon'qu because I really vibe with their ending having Sully become Flavias friend.

Stahl and Cordelia because yeah whatever

*The Kingdom of Ylisse is preparing for Halloween, but none more passionately than the Robin and Tharja household. Their home has converted the lawn into a cemetery with skeletons crawling out of their graves, animatronic zombies pounding at their windows, and werewolves perched on the gate.*

-Inside-

Tharja, dressed as Morticia Addams: Ah, my fated one, this season fills me with such wicked joy. It reminds me of the day you asked me to be your wife.

Robin, dressed as Gomez Addams: Or that time Chrom let me burn all those boats. I don’t know if he knows I just really wanted to indulge in my arsonistic tendencies.

Tharja: Oh, darling, don’t sell yourself short. It was a tactically sound decision.

Robin: Ah, but the love we made afterwards was historic.

Tharja: You were so excited by the fire.

Child!Noire, emerging from the house, dressed as a Christmas Elf: Mama and papa are icky!

*The couple turn to behold their child*

Tharja: Noire... you are aware you were meant to wear a Halloween costume?

Noire: But I really want it to be Christmas! And I really like being an elf! And- and it’s better than dumb old Morgan’s costume.

Been making time in between assignments to jot down some sappy Awakening stuff -- in honor of the valentines banner, have some thoughts on my top 5 playthrough couples! It's mostly just me gushing about dynamics and details, and disregarding the support convos as how they fell in love lol

(No chrobin ones, sorry, but I’m so happy for you all 😭😭😭)

Robin and Frederick: (stay tuned because I'll be posting an extended collection of thoughts on them eventually) I love the slow burn of Frederick not trusting them, the gradual relationship building to love and trust, only for Frederick to be right all along, but they’ve gotten so close that he still loves and trusts them despite the facts. I think Robin would be so caught up in the memory loss and fast pace of the war, Frederick offers much-needed consistency and stability. Frederick would be so straight-laced, having a partner who brings him a little fun and relaxation while caring just as much about their duty would do wonders for him. He also loves the fact that they’re a predominantly fire-wielding mage... And come on, what’s a better aesthetic than a romance between a great knight and a dragon he was supposed to slay?

Cherche and Lon’qu: Cherche quickly figures out she has feelings for Lon’qu upon meeting him, and takes all the first actions in the relationship. They’re an extremely low key, private couple. They have as full and true a love as any, but rarely show public comments and displays. Because of this, they master the art of communicating by looks alone. They both are incredibly observant, and can read the other’s body language and tone instantly. They made a pact at the beginning of the relationship that they wouldn’t let emotion for the other make them sloppy on the battlefield (but they both slip up now and again). They strike me as a happy ace couple, but if they do end up having Gerome, he definitely gets his brooding drama from his father.

Henry and Olivia: I actually think this is a common one in fandom, I just love their dynamic. Both keep to themselves normally – whether from shyness or being the creepy outsider – so when they gravitate together they’re enamored with the other’s company. They both see a side that no one else gets to know. Olivia sees Henry’s softer, calmer side that no one takes the time to know. Henry sees Olivia’s true and vulnerable self that she never allows to show. Their relationship isn’t very obvious at first, they’re just excited to have found a friend and confidant for a while. It isn’t until Olivia gets seriously injured that Henry’s smile drops and he feels genuinely panicked for her safety, cueing them both in on their feelings. Everyone breathes a sigh of relief when they find out they’re a couple, because Henry will finally have a sweet influence. Instead, Henry’s mannerisms start to rub off on Olivia, and she develops some morbid interests and dark humor… (I also think that Inigo picks up on that, which is why he can genuinely connect to his fellow retainer Peri in fates!)

Lissa and Donnel: There’s something so sweet about young village boy on a hero’s journey falling in love with the princess ;-; There’s none of the cliche having-a-ton-of-trouble-adapting-to-farm life/courtly life, since they’re both so eager to learn about the world. Lissa easily gets her hands dirty and helps with the chores, which impresses Donnel. Meanwhile, she is surprised with how well he cleans up and speaks properly to other royals and diplomats. They don’t think about marriage for a long time after the war, but Lissa realizes she has feelings for him immediately. Donnel is totally awestruck by her, but chalks it up to meeting a beautiful, strong princess in person and doesn’t think much of it. It isn’t until his defending her on the battlefield feels a bit more than a sense of duty that he reevaluates himself. When they meet Owain for the first time, Donnel cries at being a father, even though his son is a grown man.

Cordelia and Gaius: I like the idea of a playful thief and a duty-focused knight finding balance in the other. They’ve got the enemies to lovers dynamic – they despised each other at first because of their opposites. Over so much time being stuck with one another, they turned their annoyance into aid. Cordelia coaxed Gaius out of some of his dirty/dangerous habits, and he may have helped her loosen up in some not-so-legal ways. While I hate her mother-ness in their support, there is something so beautiful and intimate about her cleaning him up and cutting his hair…
