Another process photos compilation! Most of them I have already shared them on Instagram or BlueSky, but it's nice to put them all in one place 🫶
So, I started this head on October 2023 with the idea of making a revision of my first head Merry, since 2024 is Merry Doll Round 12th Anniversary, and 12 is my number 😊
So, my first step was taking a quick plaster mold of the original Merry head (head on the right), just of the face. Then I took a replica with clay, and started working on it. This process was very quick, and I didn't take any picture of it.
My idea was to make a similar system as the original Merry, with an additional piece inside the head for the teeth.
She was a cutie already 🫶 But I wasn't satisfied with the teeth, I couldn't make it look natural, so I stored her and I kept working on Mugi and a pre-order.
A couple of months later, I took her out and decided to remake the mouth from scratch, this time making the teeth sculpted inside the mouth! Definitely I like this result way more, it feels more natural!
And that's it! The rest of the job was sandind, fixing asymmetries and priming!
During the entire process I kept calling her "Birthday Girl", and she didn't look like Merry either, so I went for a couple of name ideas, one of them being Berry (B- from Birthday and -erry from Merry). Funny enough, I would use that name all the time when I played Sims, so after sharing her on Instagram, most people agreed she was definitely Berry!
I can't wait to get her casted, paint her face with a strong blush, and put her into lolita clothes 🥰
They are inspired by those creepy porcelain face clown dolls with fabric bodies. Also partial inspo from @pixelchills doll drops and @maudiemoods mini moon for their designs.
Details and in progress pics below the cut.
The first thing I had to do was sketch out the plan I had for these guys. Tumblr has a limit on how many pictures you can attach for one post so I can only include one page of sketches. This was the main one I followed, using this as a general guide of how big I want each component to be.
You can also tell that I changed the face a bit from the final product.
The faces, hands and feet were made using apoxy sculpt. The hands and feet have wire embedded in them to provide structure and to attach bells onto.
You can’t really see in the picture but Sun has a deeper groove around the outer edge of the head piece to allow room for his rays. Moon also has a groove but it’s much smaller cause all it needs to hold is a little fabric and wire to attach it to the back of the head.
All these pieces were painted with acrylics. It was kinda difficult figuring out how I wanted to paint the eyes, but ended up with something kinda similar to cannon except no pupils for either of them (sorry moon).
Last but not least I cut out a few templates for the body and clothes. I made a few prototypes since I have very little sewing experience and was scared. This unfortunately didn’t stop me from messing up several times, like not having the right measurements for the waist size and ending up with too tiny pants 🙃, but I was able to fix it with some fenagling. If you look on the final Sun doll you might be able to see the extra fabric I added down the sides to fix this. I don’t have a sewing machine so everything was hand sewn and took forever 😭.
Anyway moral of the story don’t do this unless you are willing to sacrifice hundreds of hours to a couple of fictional jesters.
In all seriousness I’m super duper happy with how they turned out and would love for them to end up in some haunted thrift shop at some point. If anyone else wants to do something similar and needs help figuring out how to do it hmu I’d be glad to help.
Hello! I wanted to ask how you made your little jester skull doll, as I wanted to make my own.
I didn’t realize you were the author of Beetle and the Hollowbones, I love that book! You have lovely art.
Thank you!!
A Little Sweetie’s skull is hooked into her body with craft wire. I covered the back of her head, where most of the wire has been anchored inside of her foramen magnum, by needlefelting with plain cream-colored wool. You can see a little bit of the wire anchor from the side, where I looped it though the openings in the bone behind her palate. She has no lower jaw, so I didn’t have to bother with wiring that. She has held up well through about 4 years of adventures.
Most porcelain jesters will have wire inside already, and you can tell before you buy them because they will be posable. The head is quite easy to remove with scissors, typically the head and neck of any porcelain doll will be one piece secured onto the shoulders with string. Once you start taking the doll apart it’s very easy to see how it works. Additionally, under the doll wig or hat the head will be hollow and if the eyes are inset then they’re likely to be glass and you can pop them right out and reuse them for another project. Try hitting charity shops in your area before hunting around online. I found Little Sweetie’s body at a goodwill for $7 and it has brought me infinite delights. If you do go ahead and make a doll too please show me!
this is my dnd character her name is Princess Glamour she is a magical fairy fox unicorn princess girl. she DOES have an animal sidekick also who do you think i am
I had the amazing opportunity to show off some art at an all-queer art exhibition/concert last night. I was a little too high to remember to take pictures of all of my little dudes there, but folks were incredibly kind and enthusiastic about my work 😊
by the time I finally get round to finishing this one, Laudna's only gone and gotten herself a new look, and this one's no longer relevant. Oh well, here she is anyway. Character of Laudna is the property of Critical Role and so on and so forth. #criticalrolefanart #laudna #dollmaking https://www.instagram.com/p/CnpjCUFve6j/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Truly despise posting via instagram but I can't get pics to upload so Anyway, form of dread will now join everyday friendly laudna doll on the shelf, and perhaps in two years i will get around to adding the dead tree version.
New doll by yours truly!
Inspired by GUS from Sweet Tooth, created with fabrics, wire and some clay for the horns. It measures around 27 inches (69 cm) and, as seen in the pics, it is articulated. I am so proud of the result. like, I created this!
