Somedays are just harder than others. Cut yourself a little slack and do what you can right now. It may not be much, but the little things really do make a big difference. As for me, I have days where I am so emotionally wiped out that what I set out to do, just isn't feasible. Somedays that means that I just don't have the emotional capacity to respond to messages or DMs or be there for others as my own cup is running on empty. I stopped beating myself up (because really, it was just making things worse!) and applaud myself for doing what I can. Even if that does not cross everything off on my to-do list....or get every message answered. I’m excited to share the most recent addition to my series, Plastic “Waves”- a visual commentary on the effects of human behavior on our oceans and seas. Created using recycled garbage bags, the next slide is a BTS video that compressed the 12 days it took to sculpt the model into 28 seconds of time-lapse footage. The process starts with a recycled chip-board base, supported by wood bracing. The next layer is pillow batting that provides visual volume to the overall sculpture. Then a layer of aluminum screen is applied, giving tooth for the next layer- recycled paper pulp mixed with a binder. Once that layer dries, recycled black garbage bags are laminated to the surfaces and a translucent version is used to create the foam and spray effects. Until I get it under the right light, I have very little idea of how it really looks. It’s for that reason I end up photographing it four or five times, each affording me the opportunity to make improvements. The model’s relatively small size, 36x48 inches, is masked primarily by a deep depth of field that can only be obtained by using a technique called focus stacking- combining multiple images taken at different focus distances in post production. Tonight I ran 5 miles straight! 3.5 outside then it started getting dark so did the last 1.5 on the treadmill at home! I kept under a 10:40 pace the whole time which is the best I've done all around! . Most people would say I should have done a longer run by now.. More than one probably.. Maybe I should have a faster pace.. Since my half is, y'know, 18 days away. 🙈 And they're not wrong! . Life has thrown some curve balls at me through this training.. But even though I'm running short on time and my running isn't great.. I'm not nervous about doing this race! I’ve been painting things that have been flowing through my newsfeed as away to digest and sit with what’s going on in the world (or at least my perception of it). Soon I’ll have a little pile of paintings, and since I have a very limited amount I can donate to worthy charities, I’d like to give these paintings and perhaps prints to other people who donate to a legit organization. In my next post I’ll work out concrete details, but it may be along the lines of: a $100 donation can get you an original painting on paper, $10 can get you a print, etc. there are lots of great funds doing so much hard work right now. I rarely sell my paintings, as they are mostly a personal passion and catharsis, but people occasionally like them. And if it can help get some donation dollars into the hands of those in need, I can at least use them as a motivator. Be safe everyone. And be good to each other.
