I think I found a way to explain the difference/connection between dan heng and dan feng with a silly metaphor. don't know if it will make sense to everyone else, but it makes sense to me.

dan heng is a cassette/vhs tape that is recording over the original content on the tape. if you are old enough to have used those, you might have accidentally recorded over things that were already on them. maybe you had family video tapes your dad recorded of you and/or your sibling as babies and you accidentally recorded your favorite TV show over one of them (and got in huge trouble.....I'm sorry dad 😅) or your sibling recorded over your cassette that you redorded things on and lost most of what you did)

the reincarnated vidyadharas get a new tape to put in the same device to record a whole new tape. however, in dan heng/feng's case, we know it was messed with. it wasn't a new tape. it was the same tape put back in, rewound to the beginning, and started over. dan heng's life/memories are recording over top dan feng's. in my experience with these tapes, sometimes when you record over top something, there will be little blips of the old thing that sneak through in between different recordings. (at least I recall that happening when my sister recorded over my cassette. there would be a minute of me talking and then she cuts me off and babbles for few minutes and then part of a song on the radio I recorded for a few seconds, then back to her, and so on) that's dan feng's fragmented memories coming to dan heng here and there.

they are essentially the same tape, but being re-recorded over the old one. therefore, it's basically a different tape at that point because all the content recorded on it now is different, minus some little bits that didn't get recorded over.

if you had a vhs for the movie shrek, but when you watched it, it turned out to be a barbie movie (and maybe after the barbie movie ended, instead of credits, it switched to the ending of skrek), would you still say that vhs tape is shrek? no, you'd probably cross out "shrek" and write what barbie movie it is instead.

that's basically how dan heng/feng works and why they are different people, yet still connected.
