I've been listening to the 8th Doctor's audio dramas and decided to design what I'd like to imagine a Vortisaur looks like! >:o)

I was going to go to bed. Instead I started painting a vortisaur saying hi to my little vortisaur-obsessed freak Quenteth.

god Eight is so silly when he's allowed to be 🥺 my man gets to the 1930s, whines about the very possibility of Charley ever leaving him, finds a fucked up corpse, immediately commits identity theft, and then starts talking like an incomprehensible cartoon gangster despite knowing full well how the tardis translation matrix works. like bestie are you good

we are deviating from companion tournaments for a bit to judge Doctor Who's

Sandy the Sandbeast (The Rescue)
Zombo the Zarbi (The Web Planet)
The Chumblies (Galaxy 4)
HiFi (Steven's stuffed panda)

The Drashigs (Carnival of Monsters)

Jasper and Stewart
2-2
Grandfather's shadow
Gramps
Ramsay the Vortisaur
Fred the Eternal Snail
Marmaduke
The Butterfly Room
Mina the cat and her kittens
Vampire squirrels
Darwin
We are playing fast and loose with the definitions of every word in the title, contestants do not have to be freaky, they can be normal, standard, earthly pets, they do not have to be little, horrible giant monsters are welcome, if you can justify calling them a pet its fine
any creatures that any characters make friends with or look after in some way are welcome, go wild
the only rules (that I probably don't have to explicitly state, but I will anyway) are that
submissions absolutely cannot have a level of intelligence comparable to humans. Animal-like intelligences only. (K9 is the exception to this because he is a robot dog)
should be treated well by the people you are claiming they are pets of, so, for example, you can't have the whale under the thames in Thin Ice
Some items on this list are from stories I have not seen in a while, so potentially won't meet these rules. If that is the case please let me know so I can remove them
Nominations will close 19:15 BST (UTC+1) tomorrow (27/09)
(also when the time comes you will vote Sandy or I will delete this blog and you will never see a companion tournament again for as long as you live (<- this is a joke but please let my beloved sandy do well))

alright here we go!
Every Time the Eighth Doctor Got Hurt (in the audios) and How it (Possibly) Scarred/Mentally Effected Him from Storm Warning to and including Terror Firma
warnings for some fucked up injuries, a couple of Suicidel mentions and spoilers for most of season 1-2 of charley and 8 audios, and the divergent univerce, and terror firma, but its divided to episodes so its easiler to avoid spoilers (episodes that have their name at the top are where he got hurt, episodes that have their name at the end are ones where physically nothing is wrong but mentaly probably something happend)
1. (Storm Warning) - he cut his arm for Ramsey the Vortisaur to suck on the time, probably left a scar on his right arm! like a bite scar!!, (personal headcanon that his arm could be leaking time :) espeshelly with all of anti time stuff that comes later into play) 2. (Stones Of Venice) - got punched in the head a bunch of times, once to render him unconscious, but its all ok in the end for him because he got to drive a gondula 3. (Minuet in Hell) - …a bunch of amnesia, his mind getting transferred out of his body and him basically getting tourtured mentally for not remembering anything, then he found his missing thoughts and transferred them back into his brain, could be another couse for constent headicks and amnesia if you ask me lol 4. (Chimes of Midnight) - …ok so, he sort of died? like someone choked him to death, but he got better, he died so he can talk to charley who was on the verge of dieing herself, kinda complicated, but it sorted itself out and both Charley and him were fine, so like… possible scars along the neck from choking? (i tried not to give too many spoilers for anyone else reading this because i highly recommend this one)
5. (Seasons of Fear) - got tourterd by a dagger, not said where, but i think he got stabbed in the chest a bunch of times, and his hands, Charley cleaned the wounds and stuff, he did almost passed out after all of it, so he might have a nervousness around knifes and a bunch of scares on his chest from the stabbing, and he was in an actual killing mode because Charley got tourtured right next to him, but she was at a better state. - then he also got stabbed pretty much in the same place later on at a sword fight, almost to the point of regeneration, at least he thought he was going to, but he was ok, got mad about the holes in his shirt. he probably has a scar from it on his chest :) - creatures named the Nimon tried to suck away his energy (at least i think that's what they did), but only for a sec to show power, but it really hurt him. oh yeah and then he flew through the time vortex, he changed his mind into a Gallifreyan Lotus to avoid getting hurt, and then he falls from the sky, but he seemed to be unaffected by that. (i headcanon some particals of the time vortex have stuck to his form and now they just vibe inside of him, sometimes making his glow in the dark. man seasons of fear is such a ride, i love it)
6. ok he wants to get hurt here but never actually does, a lot of emotional hurt from seeing Charley almost losing her eyes in pain and almost destroying a whole peacefull race, but Charley knocked some sense into him that him wanting to die for this is not actually gonna save anyone - (Embrace the Darkness) - man i love this one) 7. (Neverland) - had to almost kill Charley because she saw how everything is dieng because she was alive, in the prosses admitted that he loved her, she got turned into a portal to travel to an unknown univerce and It hurt to see it, then in the end he exploded himself with A BUNCH of anti time, making him into Zagrues and slapping Charley, (mostly emotinal hurt in this one accept for the end) 8. (Zagrues 😁) - ok so… get possessed by Zagrues, realizing his can distory the univerce now and trying to fight it, then fucking Rassilon shows up and captures him, torturing him mind and soul in the prosses to make Zagrues completely take over so he can make the doctor to his personal murder weapon. Makes him watch as he burned the tardis into a crisp, and a living amalgamation of his tardis (that looks and sounds like the brigadier) tourtes him also, but its not spesefied how. Seeing the tardis dieing tips him into the edge mentaly and get zagrues take over, Rassilon is littiraly "on your knees my creature :)" really messed up stuff fhfghfgh, he once again in too much pain to live (and a danger to the entire univerce), and so asks Charley to kill him, which she does, by stabbing the sword the mind controlled doctor made out of the remines of the tardis right through his chest (ok he definitely has a scar from the sword right in his chest now that I think about it) he gets better :) through Doctors supporting each other. Which at that point the brigadier tardis (who is nice now) brings him some anti matter from the heart of the tardis. (no but this one messed him up so MUCH lol, boy wanted to die truly, pretty ruff stuff but i can say that here he got like, activly Suicidel. hfghfgh I love this one so much its not even funny, my poor baby boy)
ok Divergent Arc! (throught all of this he is in pain from not having time in this univerce so a lot of mental health problems and physically migrans):
9. (Scherzo) - ...alright so, held hands with Charley until it got transphormed to be the same hand, same body right at the end... that could be concidered an injury, constent headache from the lack of Time, also yeah his vocal chords got exposed but they were fine. Charley and him could have matching scars on the hands they held together :), he has a scar on his throat from it. Also maybe mental pain and an aversion of people repeating after him
10. Ok in this one its mostly Charley getting hurt unfortenetly, but the doctor had to go through the mental struggle of almost losing her completely to her turning into a slug monster to give birth to a lot more slug babies, they managed to find a salotion and Charley does not remember any of this happening, luckily for her, but I headcanon her to at leasy suspect something happened (Creed of the Kromon), I really hate this one, also this one is where C'rizz joins in)
11. (Natural History of fear) - ahhh I guess almost drowning? But not majorly, it was mostly being scared for Charley and C'rizz's lives, they were alright though 12. (the twighliht kingdom) - almost got absorbed completely into being part of a living building, but someone else volunteered last minute, but it did couse him a lot of pain in his brain 13. (Faith Stealer) - got smacked in the head, and almost got squished to death with Charley in a closet (ha ha) but apart from that nothing (Faith Stealer my beloved) 14. (the last) - ahhhhh definitely died from an explosion, only to come back to life, only he remembers that, Charley and C'rizz died as well, also got burred under a crushed building and got a nasty hit on the head, but it doesnt seem like the death affected him much 15. (Caerdroia) - got time sickness from being so close to the tardis after so long, fainted just because of that. Got split into 3 parts (is this an injury??? no clue), then got trapped in between a gaint bell and almost died by the shear noise and pain from that (overstimulated), but got rescued last minute, he was pretty dissociated by this point though until they found the tardis (probably did not help his "but who am i really???" thoughts, ie dissociation)
Post divergent univerce
16. almost… ended his own life hut didn't but was really traumatized by what happened to his two former companions, but managed to save the day - (Terror Firma)
and that's it! this guys needs a break (he is not gonna get one) (here it is! @laden-fruits , @violentlywaftingcurtains , @keepthemacramesecret , @zagreuses-toast , hope it was alright to tag! that would help you guys find it if and when you need it)

*more warning for me talking about my watching the show fic*
Anyway, context:
I did not expect that much interaction on my silly sleep deprived post! ❤️
As some of you probably know, my original plan was to go into Storm Warning after The Giggle, but I didn't know what to choose after that, which is what I was trying to figure out while writing that other post.
Anyway, I've been doing some thinking...
PROPAGANDA (probably gibberish but my brain is evil rn)
TV Movie: 7 regenerates into 8 because of the American Healthcare System. The Master is a goo snake. He slithers into a new body and proceeds to want the Doctor’s body the whole damn movie. Post regeneration sillies. The Master literally roars like a wild beast. 8 kisses Grace. He fuckin FORGOR. 8 talks about his father for a little bit. Half human????
Night of the Doctor: 8 regenerates into War. Lots of interesting ties to the EU. Short but devastating. This guy pretty much does himself in. Depiction of common perception of Time Lords at the time
Storm Warning: CHARLOTTE POLLARDDDDDDDDD. 8 gets a new companion! He is whimsy and so much more, but there is a foreboding sense to it. RAMSEY THE VORTISAUR. 8 talks a little bit about the Academy Era. Both this and the TV Movie would eventually lead to Zagreus.
The Conscript: 8 gets forced to be apart of a Time War recruitment camp under the threat of Ollistra doing something to his companions. Very good depiction of Time Lords being used as cannon fodder. YOU ARE NOT SONTARANS. Disturbing Gallifreyan nationalistic song. 8 makes everyone's lives difficult. Daleks daleks daleks
Day of the Vashta Nerada: Gallifrey is trying to weaponize the Vashta Nerada for use in the Time War. This doesn't end well. Pretty much everyone dies! Enter GIANT Vashta Nerada and enter the Nerada Vashta.
A Heart on Both Sides: NYSSAAAAAAAA. Nyssa is on The Traken providing hospital relief to those affected by the Time War. She has a helper named Dr. Foster (wink). They go to the planet Reeve, which is incredibly anti-Gallifreyans because the High Council has been blowing up their factories. Time Lord spy. Anti Gallifreyan graffiti and the use of Praxis gas, which almost kills 8.
The Lords of Terror: companion Bliss wants to go visit her parents, only to discover it has been covered in a big dome. 8 gets tortured yet again. Are the Daleks or the Time Lords responsible for this atrocity? Gallifrey is a fucked up society.
In the Garden of Death: 8, Bliss, and the Twelve are in a Dalek POW camp. Oh no they forgor everything! The Daleks torture the heck out of these guys. These amnesiacs briefly wonder if 8 is a bad guy. Interrogation on Interrogation on Interrogation
Mary's Story: Two 8s collide with Mary Shelley and Co at Villa Diodati. First an older 8 who has been affected by vitreous time, leaving him in horrific shape (burns, muscle, bone....I'll spare you the details) to the point where he literally dies for a little bit. Gets electrocuted and turns into basically Frankenstein's Monster. Young 8 turns up, finds these really quite embarrassing, saves the day, and takes Mary on as a companion

Bracket B Round 1
Poll 7
Eve Song (@genderbinaryisforlosers) vs. Eclipse (@ddragontheloud)
77. Eve Song (@genderbinaryisforlosers)
they/them
Once upon a time six years ago me and my best friend looked at Doctor Who: The Day of the Doctor (2013) and said "we can fix this" and this spiraled rapidly out of control into a 450+ page Google Doc called Time Rewritten. Pretty quickly we embraced self-indulgence as the name of the game and since it is practically a meme amongst our friends that if my favourite characters do not have children to parent/mentor they WILL be assigned one by me, Eve was born. Eve became the child of the Doctor and River Song in a Mutual Adoption Incident where they as a baby Tenza imprinted on them both and whoops is now part Time Lord because that's how Tenza work. The era of the "show" we wrote for them mostly takes place when they're between nine and thirteen, and they are a pure force of chaos and wholesomeness. The Master (Missy) gifts them a vortisaur egg when she assigns herself their godmother and Eve HAS attempted to teach their space pterodactyl to fly the TARDIS and it HAS gone terribly. The Doctor calls them Starlight. Later on their arc touches on their identity as a Gallifreyan without ever having lived on Gallifrey and stuff. I don't know how much more I can say without becoming nonsensical or summarising the entire plot of Time Rewritten. My ask box is open to questions (@genderbinaryisforlosers). They're my little baby and they deserve to win.
Oh yeah in Time Rewritten we said fuck it this is our house and recast the Eleventh Doctor as John Boyega (Matt Smith got reassigned elsewhere), so Eve is black. They have platinum blond curly hair and the smile of an angel. Art below is mine!
78. Eclipse (@ddragontheloud)
she/they
she's angry like 24/7 and a little fucked up in the head but that's why they're cool! she also has a cool sword and big issues from being an ex-chosen-one
Pale blue skin with glowing pale yellow eyes, usually hidden underneath the mask she wears. Mask covers everything but her mouth, and has a crescent moon on the front. Armor matches the helmet in color (palette has a mix of light and dark blues, with bits of yellow), with another moon on her belt. Has wings on both her head and back, with moons floating right at the tips. The wings have chunks taken out of them.

Eighth Doctor Reviews: The Eighth Doctor Adventures; Series One
Tumblr media
In honor of me re-listening to the first series of the 8DAs and it being rereleased as a box set I'm going to be giving a little review.
I mostly listen to this at work, and jot down notes and the like pretty quickly.
Also if you are interested in this series it is one of the few that is free on spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/704B1LamEbU2wNPDmfwLQ8
Doctor: The Eighth Doctor
Companion: Lucie Miller
#1&2: Blood of the Daleks
Blood of the Daleks is an absolutely amazing start to this range. Quickly introducing a new companion, showing the state that 8 is in and giving us one of the best Dalek stories that Big Finish have ever done.
Lets talk about Lucie Miller, I absolutely love Lucie Miller. She instantly endears herself to the listener, and her 'antagonistic' relationship with 8 is, "Chef's Kiss". She has that Rose Tyler energy but without the melodrama of season 2. In short Lucie kicks ass.
This is a great jumping on point for anyone at all interested in the 8th doctor and has seen the new series. This was made for people who were watching Doctor Who in the RTD era.
This story has that super interesting contrast between two factions of Daleks that I loved in Remembrance of the Daleks. Also Hayley Atwell (Yes Agent Carter) plays the villain in this and is just killing it.
I really recommend this story, It's free and just one of the most amazing places to start.
fun quotes:
"More Beans please" - The Eighth Doctor
"FISH AND CHIPS FOR ALL!" - The Eighth Doctor
Rating 9/10
#3: The Horror of Glam Rock
A just fine adventure set in the 70s. The name is a cool play off the Horror of Fang Rock. I love the Glam Rock/Bowie vibes of the music. Bernard Cribbins plays an asshole music agent, and it is super weird to hear Wilf shit talk people. We get to meet Lucie's aunt Pat who seems super cool. I love that even though we can't meet Lucie's family in the modern day we get to understand her more through her connections.
The monster in this one is kind of lame, and the constant whining of Tommy Tomorrow is exhausting
Rating 7.5/10
#4: Immortal Beloved
Now this one is super interesting, an extremely Shakespearian story. It's very obviously taking a lot from Romeo and Juliet. I'm not sure why but this one really spoke to me, I love the fusion of Greek mythology and future technology. The whole twist of the piece is also super engaging from a moral standpoint. Also the guy who played Winston Churchill in NewWho plays the antagonist Zeus and is delightfully evil, like really despicable.
Rating 8.5/10
#5: Phobos
This listen through is actually my first time listening to Phobos, I skipped it on my first listen through of the 8DAs season one. I just hate this story and it's the only one I might actually call bad. It's the least fun kind of goofy and follows a far too Scooby Doo type plot for Doctor Who. I do like the idea of this world being a travel destination for thrill seekers to visit, that was a cool bit of world building.
Rating 6/10
#6: No More Lies
When I first listened to this one I thought I had skipped something because of the fact that it starts en media res, but it really works in this story. Zimmerman is a really interesting character. I'm always happy to see a time loop when they pop up. The vortisaurs from Storm Warning reappear and are always a lovely bit of world building for 8. Also the song sung in Hungarian is just wonderfully haunting,
Rating 8/10
#7&8 Human Resources
We finally get some resolution to the mystery of Lucie set up in Blood of the Daleks. The concept of what the company they work at is so fucking cool, like absolutely *chef's kiss*. I always love when the Doctor is thrown into a mundane situation and him roleplaying as a big shot office worker is so fun. Lucie and Karen also have a very funny dynamic. We also get the full introduction of the character of the Headhunter who has been trying to track Lucie down through the whole season. I always love when the Cybermen are handled well and this one does some great things with them. There are so many twists and turns in this one that I simply cannot spoil, but I am in love with this story. Also fuck Straxus, all my homies hate Straxus.
Rating 9/10
Overall this season struggles in some places, but for the low low price of free on Spotify I cannot recommend it enough. Lucie and 8 have an electric dynamic, and this season is tailor made to get NewWho fans into both the 8th Doctor and Big Finish in general, and the two two parters that feature the Cybermen and the Daleks present themselves as real standouts of the whole set.

Time Traveling Gwen:
1) Howl of Terror ability: by channeling the Core, (night of the Fendahl) Gwen can create vocalizations of various levels to strike mortal terror into the hearts of all organic/sentient beings in her immediate vicinity. Range depends on the strength of the vocalization as well as how active the Core is, but it also is indiscriminate and will also effect allies.
2) Superhuman: while channeling the Core, Gwen gains superhuman strength, stamina and defense, with no need to eat, drink or sleep. This comes at a cost though: channeling the Core comes with an altered state of consciousness where everything seems dreamlike, and once you stop channeling the Core.... You're going to crash, hard. It's not pretty.
3) Slowed/stopped aging: after briefly traveling with the First Doctor and company, Gwen, Rhys, Sarah-Jane, and the others all gained drastically reduced aging, the same as Ian and Barbara, "the immortal" professors at Cambridge.
(The Doctor never did figure out just what was leaking in the TARDIS back then to give his human companions Gallifreyan lifespans, but no matter how much he tries to replicate it, it just never sticks, and there's been thousands of slap-dash repairs done to the TARDIS since Barbara and Ian left-- narrowing down the options is impossible, and too dangerous to put the TARDIS and his companions through. )
4) universal translator: after *once again* traveling with the Doctor (a future regeneration, who crashed the TARDIS in their brand new bathroom), Gwen and Rhys both opted to get the advanced option of translator circuits wired to their brain so they can continue to communicate with alien life forms even when not traveling in the TARDIS. Even before they got the universal translator procedure, They'd both had a lot of time and practice picking up the more "common" alien languages.
5) Foreknowledge, of the usual Time Traveling Fix It Fic variety, and then some. Gwen knows of, and knows how to stop/prevent/mitigate a few hundred near doomsday events... And that only covers the next 5 years. For reference, she's been doing this for over 40 years at this point, earth-time wise.
Tracking time spent traveling with the Doctor became an effort in futility once that damn vortisaur ate the wall calendar...
6) Contacts, friends, and support networks, oh my!
Living next to Sarah-Jane Smith for years means you run into a lot of the Doctor's friends. Traveling with various incarnations of the Doctor means you run into even more; suddenly, you're not alone anymore, and you have someone to fall back on. Therapy helps, too. Gwen's gotten a lot better at coping with her reality, and the key to that is communication. She tells Rhys absolutely everything, immediately.
Oh, and she also calls up Billis Manger so she can punch him in the face.

ʌ: comfort after a nightmare with romana + whoever you like?
ʌ: comfort after a nightmare
"Mistress?"
K-9's whirring voice broke through the unreality of a nightmare.
"Mistress?" K-9 repeated from the end of her bed. "Elevated heartsrate and increased adrenaline suggests you are suffering a nightmare. Suggested treatments are—"
"Oh, do stop talking, K-9," Romana snapped. "I know full well what a nightmare is."
"Apologies, mistress." The dog hung his head. "Do you require—"
"I require no help from you, K-9," she said, sitting up. "I'm perfectly fine."
K-9 beeped despondently, and trundled away.
"Finally," she said, flopping back onto her bed, "some peace and quiet in this blasted place."
"Peace and quiet, hmm?"
Romana sat up quite suddenly, and almost bashed heads with the Doctor. "What on Gallifrey are you doing here?" she hissed. "I don't know about you, but some of us are trying to sleep!"
"Exactly," the Doctor grinned. "And I don't know how you plan to sleep with a head full of—what were you dreaming about, precisely?"
She sniffed. "I hardly think it matters."
"Oh, but it does, Romana, it does! I have heard from many a wise man that the greatest antidote to one's problems is communication. A problem shared is a problem halved, after all."
"That doesn't make any sense," Romana said. "A problem shared is precisely the same quantity as beforehand."
"And nor does clamming up about your troubles," the Doctor said. "Now, if you're comfortable, what were you imagining?"
"The details have fled," she said after a moment's pause, "but I was in the Academy—"
"Never a good start," the Doctor interrupted.
"—and it was utterly empty," Romana said, continuing as if he hadn't spoken. "Not a soul in sight ... except, as I soon found out, a pack of ravenous Vortisaurs."
"Who then ate you," the Doctor said sympathetically. "How dreadful!"
"They did not eat me," she said. "They succeeded in cornering me, but no sooner had they done that than they transformed into a rabble of Academy students—Doctor, if you interrupt me one more time I will find a way to actually feed you to a Vortisaur."
"Well, there's no need to be rude," he said sullenly.
"As I was saying, they turned into Academy students—baying for my blood, and also ginger beer."
"Why on Earth would you have ginger beer on you?" the Doctor said. "I was rather under the impression you were the sort of strait-laced student I always hated."
"Thank you so much for that," Romana said. "Well, I may have stolen from Borusa's drinks cabinet once or twice," she admitted, "and so I was threatened by students with all manners of terrifying objects."
"Like?"
"I don't remember! Why should I? It was only a dream. And at that point, I woke up."
"Most terrible, I'm sure. Do you feel better now?"
"I don't know if I feel better, per se, but I most definitely feel differently," Romana said.
"Differently?"
"You see," Romana said, "rather than panicking, I currently have the urge to punch you in the face."
"Excellent!" the Doctor said, beaming. "Now if you could hug me rather than punching me. I think that would be better for both parties."
"If you insist."
"I very much do, Romana."
Well then. There was nothing else for it, was there? She hugged him, and saved her fist the pain for another day.

Project: Blue Box - Storm Warning
Tumblr media
This review contains SPOILERS.
◆ Summary
Charlotte Pollard, edwardian adventurer. She sneaked into the R101, an English airship in its first - and last - voyage. Also aboard, the Eighth Doctor - stuck with the crew without his TARDIS. And a mystery: the Minister of Air Tamworth is hiding something in the R101.
◆ Doctor
It's so appropriate that Storm Warning opens with the Eighth Doctor playing with his books and reading a Frankestein introduction from Mary Shelley. And, even better - he was in gothic sleepover in 18??. That, of could, would later be explored in future releases. (See: The Company of Friends, The Silver Turk, Army of Death and The Witch from the Well).
They used to ride vortisaurs in the Academy. He calms this one vortisaur by patiently giving him his blood - unafraid. Trust him, Charley, he has no idea what he's doing. When accused of being a German spy, he says he is doctor Schmidt - Smith, Schmidt, it's a cute play of words.
When asked about other planets, the Doctor says: “A million planets circling a million suns, Charley, where the starlight makes colours which human eyes have never seen.”
The brief monologue at the end of the story tells you eveything you can expect from McGann in the role from here on. The will eternalize Eight.
◆ Charley
An edwardian adventurer who sneaked into the airship, Charley's introduction couldn't be better. When asked why she did it, she says: it was for adventure, the thrill of it.
“Oh, there’s so much of it, isn’t there? Sometimes I lie awake at night and think about all the thousands of places I could go, all the people I could meet. I could have a hundred lifetimes and still not meet them all.”
When talking to an alien for the first time, the Doctor asks her to touch its chest and tell him what she is feeling. She does: “I don’t know. Anxious and incomplete. Like, like the feeling you get when you meet someone you know is going to break your heart.” Rathbone thinks she's disgusting, but Charley finds her beautiful - she gets emotional, even.
Charley reveals her dream of going to Singapure and that was the start of her journey. A small information that will become extremely important later on.
◆ Other characters
The initial dynamic between minister Tamworth and one of the responsible for the airship's building, Frayling, tells you a lot of what will happens during Storm Warning: the ship is not as safe as it seems and the minister is hiding something. Tamworth is a surprisingly clever character - and well-humored. There is this scene that when asked if he found glory in war, he answers: “There were medals, citations, mentions in dispatches, but no, not much glory.” The regret and sorrow he feels towards the war is essential to the third act.
Rathbone is clearly a bad person from the get go, but that's even more obvious when he first talks to Charley. In a way, they mirror each other - two young people that left home to travel the world hoping to build a new happier life. Rathboth is a warning of what Charley could become.
He also works as a mirror to the minister (even if Tamworth is far from being a saint), showing a much more agressive side of humanity. Much more violent and selfish, the worst we have to offer.
Weeks is a subtler character, in a way. He is for the most part a comic relief, but I was surprised at his last scene when he's talking about his kids and playing with the Vortisaur. The biggest tragedy of the R101 is still the real one.
◆ Golden ideas and memorable quotes
The Doctor finds a time ship stuck on the Vortex, falling and falling for eternity. "Hiccuping through its last moments forever". There is an amazing sense of wonder in these first years of releases as we adventure through the universe. Things like the temporal Vortex and the Vortisaurs feeding of temporal energy, just a lot of great ideas.
“Rathbone, a revolver isn’t at its most effective when held by a man with a half-eaten and scalded forearm.”
The Web of Time is mentioned, which is essental for all of Doctor Who but specially for this first Charley arc.
I also helps that this is a historical, even if sometimes I forget that. That's the benefit of using a less-known historical background to tell your story - you have much more freedom of what kind of narrative you can tell.
Minister Tamworth was, all this time, trying to communicate with aliens, the Triskele. This twist (not very surprising if you ever watched Doctor Who) comes at the end of part two and there onwards the story goes in a completely different direction. The Triskele walk without touching the ground. While trying to talk with the alien in custody, nothing worked until they asked Madame Zelda, a seer. The Triskele society is divided in three castes: engineers (intelectuals), uncreators (violent impulses) and legislators (one single Triskele, the Lawgiver, the balance between intelligence and emotion). This concept is so cool and I love it.
I find it to be a wonderful idead that all these interactions between the humans and the Triskele happens because the Lawgiver is dying and in his last moments of life wants them to learn something from humanity.
There is also this amazing scene the minister decides to punch an Uncreator.
◆ Sound effects
I love the radio narration that describes the R101 at the start, it establishes the vibe of the story (and Eight's era even) from the get go - it's so good. The sounds of the storm that hit the ship are great too. The song that plays in the background as the characters enter the Triskele ship for the first time is gorgeous.
◆ Replay factor
This is something I only talk about in stories I already listened to once. This doesn't gain much by a relisten but it doesn't loose anything either. That magic of hearing McGann back in the role for the first time is captivating even almost twenty-five years after. There are some nice flashforwards if you know happens to Charley, like Singapure, y'know.
◆ The Veredict
I still like Storm Warning a lot. This is not a story that will leave you breathless, but is so efficient in reintroducting the Eighth Doctor and telling you what to expect from him going foward. It also characterizes both him and Charley so well. The R101 tragedy hooks you in the narrative from the get go and give you hope even if you know there is no changing history - which sets the perfect tone for Charley's first story arc.
She would've died. The Doctor saved her life, even if he should not. It's an announced tragedy just like the R101, since the beginning. A world of adventure waiting for you, bound to break your heart.
◆ It's great, ★★★★☆.

[ Doctor Who ] Time Lords versus Weeping Angels Something i wished Doctor Who would explore more is the relationship between Time Lords and Weeping Angels because, like, hashtag Think About It The (anti?) parallels write themselves: The Time Lords and their Eye of Harmony literally Observe History. Time Lords are ever changing and regenerating into different forms and beings. Weeping Angels cannot move while Observed. They feed on their victims by turning them into History and eating the temporal potentia flux energy thingy (more of a headcanon of mine but whatevs) I also always liked the idea that Weeping Angels are a sort of natural predator to time travellers. [Sidenote: i dont know how that would fit into the time travel ecosystem of the Reapers and the Vortisaurs and what not, but its still fun to think about]
[[Sidenotw to the sidenote: afaik theres a Big Finish audio drama about beings known as Ravenous who are supposed to be the natural predators of time lords. Considering they literally are creepy clowns tho means im gonna ignore that forever]]
There have been many fan theories about how Weeping Angels might have been Time Lords on account of:
The End of Time Rassilon doing the hands over eyes pose
Fires of Pompeii Cult doing the pose and also fixed points
Pandorica/Big Bang 2 having Erased from History beings literally turn to stone echeos thingys
More probably??
the reason im writing this post in the first place is:
Theres a great awesome neat Doctor Who webcomic called "Search for the Truth" by Lydia Butz and the Origins: The Professor comic is stuck in my brain forever Theres also the Doctor Who: Regenerated Webcomic by the
same creator, which mention Haunted Wars conflict in which Time Lords indeed battled Weeping Angels and hghgdjduu
Tumblrs getting buggy im just gonna reblog the other thingy
